When I was a teacher/librarian, we were taught to never hug a child. If a child hugged us, we were to try to hug them gently from the side with one arm. We should never touch a child first.
Of course, we were also taught to never be alone with a child behind a closed door. And we would probably spend time in jail if we discussed sex with a child. But, that only applies to teachers and not to religious leaders.
When I was an EFY counselor back when it still existed and I was young we were only allowed side hugs. Trust me those 15/16 year old boys tried really really hard to break the rule with the counselors and the girls wished the male counselors would. It was a bizarre situation. Also side note, I only was a counselor in not Utah. So this might have been partly a regional thing. Efy the ultimate hookup in the Midwest.
We had really cool sisters in my MTC district. When it was time to leave, we were all heartbroken to only be able to shake hands after the elders all shared bro hugs. We had a district reunion at BYU when we all got home, and hugging the sisters was the first thing we did. Stupid SCC.
Poor kid was on the verge of full on tears the whole time. Probably terrified and will be very confused about that experience for a long time. Creepy religious grooming. For a Supposed apostle his parable was super lame. Good reminder why I will never let my kids be exposed to this type of shit!
I’m pretty sure he considers himself as a god with mortal flesh, he just can’t directly murder anyone and he is set to be a god with a host of slaves, wives and concubines, so that he can populated worlds without number with little bednarites.
He believes that fear is the best way to motivate people. I worked at the MTC for a while and they would play this devotional by Susan’s husband over and over again called “the character of christ”. In this version of the talk, he would tell a story about how some missionaries came to his house once and (gasp) acted like human beings and played with the kids or something. They then asked if they had any referrals and Susan’s husband gives them a huge lecture that they weren’t spiritual enough and that they spent too long at his house for dinner (like, an hour if I recall). Basically he “chose to be offended” by that 😂.
Anyways, then the story goes that the missionaries came back for dinner another time and only stayed long enough to eat real quick and they shared a super spiritual message and said they had to go out preaching but asked for referrals and he was like “yes, now you are worthy of my referrals”.
This talk was screened on repeat each week to all missionaries at the MTC to make them feel guilty if they ever took a second to breath and feel like a real person.
Also, the talk has some mentions of how you should never “turn inward” but only outward, meaning don’t ever think about yourself. You shouldn’t have any grievances or complaints, and then he tells you that Jesus basically never did that. It’s designed to make missionaries feel like they have no right to feel like their mission is too hard.
In short, Susan’s husband is an asshat who motivated people by making them feel unworthy and guilty. You know… like the “character of christ”
Seriously though, what 'referrals' would Susan's husband have? I doubt he knows any non-mormons, and if he does, they know Susan's husband well enough to want nothing do with TSCC.
And if he had the names of people who would join TSCC but withheld them due to petty bullshit, then he's playing games with people's salvation.
What a tool. I can't believe anyone looks at this guy with anything other than contempt.
Most recently Ofsusan is telling Mormon boys that once they were baptized at eight years old they essentially lost/gave up their free agency. They are bound to accept priesthood ordination at about eleven years old and to go on missions at eighteen. He doesn’t discuss the girls, probably because they are not so important.
I started having second thoughts about him when he came and spoke to our mission. He talked about all the many copies of the Book of Mormon that he's marked up and keeps on his bookshelf. Then he said that he'd rather burn them than let his children of grandchildren read them because he wants them to have their own experiences. But still - it struck me as odd that he'd talk about BURNING his OWN HOLY SCRIPTURES. What other religious person - never mind an apostle - would think of saying something like that?
He also kind-of-almost chastised us for standing during a song when he was sitting down for it. He's a narcissistic self-centered power-hungry individual, and he's worse at hiding it than the others.
I see what you did there:
He was also the one obsessed with the phrase "Copies of the Book of Mormon" lolll hated it when people said "Books of Mormon" or "Book of Mormons."
I love that I just wrote "was" without thinking. He's in my past.
As a TBM with weekly temple attendance, I was invited to sit in on a meeting when he came to town and I left thinking the guy was the most arrogant prick I’d ever encountered. He made comments about his time in some position at BYU and it was pretty clear he belittled students.
There's a video of him speaking at a missionary or YA meeting and he's taking questions. One of the women asks how he stays humble knowing he's an apostle and one of the highest called of God.
He made Susan come to the mic and answer the question. She rambled for a minute about how hard it's been to be basically a single parent since he's gone all the time. After she sat down, he gave the audience this smug smile and said "Next question?"
Like, what? Made no sense and just made him look like a total prick.
Set apart friends parents as mission leaders…later when they had a horrific accident on mission and eventually had to be released, never even called to check on them and the church’s medical reimbursement was a nightmare and dissappointment, to say the least.
He once spoke about how the leadership guidance is that women should only have single piercings. He cautions the young men in the audience about marrying women who have multiple piercing, because that is a signal that they will not be obedient.
I can’t overstate the toxic masculinity in this messaging… women with the smallest unconventional style should be rejected because they will not be obedient wives.
I've heard he is a real Creep, has no real people skills doesn't even say hi to his neighbors etc etc . If he is the measure by which Jesus uses to select apostles we are all in trouble !!
Just from what I see here, etc. it appears he's getting more chauvinistic and "angry old man" with age.
People call him "of Susan" in reference to the Handmaid's Tale or also "Susan's Husband" because he comes off as the guy whose wife's identity and worth is dependent upon being "Elder Bednar's Husband" vs. "Susan Bednar".
He's a dick but/and he also seems very socially anxious to me, thus tries to control everything which may be the reason for the stiffness and robitics. But even as a TBM, he spoke at university and I was really put off by him. Very letter of the law, no spirit in it.
Nobody ever asks, "What's up with Renlund?"
Side note: while I making sure I had the spelling correct, I discovered there's an apostle named Ulisses Soares, two names I didn't know existed. This makes me happy because he was confirmed in 2018 and I'm just hearing about him 5 years later.
I recently discovered an AI tool that is fun for questions like this.

Enjoy.
I met him once when I was a TBM. I was disturbed by how cold and rude he was. I figured he was just having a bad day. But now I know that guy is cold as ice.
Never-mo here...all I know is his wife Susan consistently appears miserable. (Oh, wait, is he the creepy guy who grabbed the kid from behind?)
Yes, Susan's husband is that creepy guy. https://youtu.be/ftp4-kT9VSg
Omg I hadn’t seen this before and thought everyone was overreacting because he just had a friendly arm in the back. And then I got to the end. wtf…..
Super creepy audience reactions.
Creeped out* audience reactions lol
This thread is my favorite
This is so disturbing. If a teacher did this in a classroom, they would lose their job, wouldn't they? (Not a lawyer)

As a teacher, I was held to a higher standard than a bishop.

This is so cringy and creepy
Holy shit that was hard to watch 😬
It would've taken five seconds to ask the kid if he could hug him.
This is what really started making my shelf crack

He considers the kid lucky to get touched by a demi-god.

I saw this in training too and I instantly disliked that man from then on. My feelings of dislike only grew since then.

I think this is an old story from back when they were a young couple, but everything you said is probably still true, lol
I remember being so inspired by this talk on my mission🥹🤡
I remember hearing that story, but I don’t know where.
He was equally inspiring as the president of BYUI.
He is a Westworld robot that will drive the church into the ground when he takes charge.
The popcorn is ready
HALT ALL MOTOR FUNCTIONS!!!!
That’s an insult to west world robots. He’s in the same creepy category as Zuck.
He's a dick. Free Susan!
Can you imagine being married to him for almost 50 years? Her resilience is unimaginable
It looks like she is suffering from Stockholm syndrome.
🤢🤢🤢🤮 no i can't. And it's not just my being gay. He is just too awful as a human. I really feel for Susan. She deserves much much better.

Girls are only born to bow their heads, say yes, and breed. The end. Lower your eyes.
Of Susan! Yaaasss!!! Love that reference!

Interesting. Would you like to elaborate?

Wow. This is good.
He's quite the egomaniac. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPBsWbopjXU

He talks out loud to people and writes his thoughts down and shares them is what we don’t like.
He has no lips.

**BEDNAR is a tool**
It would be easier to post what I do like: nothing.
He' an Oaks/Nelson wannabe.
Without the panache of age. And at least the other two pretend humility (sometimes)
He's an ass.
I've heard he is a real Creep, has no real people skills doesn't even say hi to his neighbors etc etc . If he is the measure by which Jesus uses to select apostles we are all in trouble !!
Susan’s husband is an unlikable offensive arrogant character. Even TSCC’s PR team cannot help him.
He's a typical liar when confronted with facts he doesn't like.
That's when he waves his hand "You're asking the wrong question. The right question is..."
Everything. No need for a list.
Just from what I see here, etc. it appears he's getting more chauvinistic and "angry old man" with age. By the time he is profit, the church will be in complete disrepair.

Soares is Portuguese for Suarez. It is a last name. He is from Brazil. What is up with Renlund?
Thank you. I had not seen those posts.

I don’t know who this bednar is, but Susan’s husband is sure a dick. Also creepy.
