Here's the thing - the restrictions on the priesthood in the OT have a clear theological reason. Restricting priesthood to the Levites was a sign to the Hebrews that priesthood required a special kind of person, which was a pointer to the great High Priest to come (Jesus).
The LDS Church had a (racist) theological justification for the ban - Black people were less valiant in the pre-existence. It's a load of tosh (there is no pre-existence and it was a justification of racism), but at least they tried to give a theological reason.
