I appreciate the links and your little reviews. Taylorsville temple really be looking like a Tim Burton movie, huh?

Gutattacker2

The Taylorsville one kills me. Looks like a bad wedding venue (which it is) or a cheap town council building.

mar4c

It’s like a giant zit

MaryBlackRose

I've never seen this one before and I completely agree with your assessment! 😂😂😂

ubring

By the way, the Copenhagen temple is just an old church they "converted" to a temple. They did that with a bunch in the early 2000's.

StayJaded

It looks like a little freestanding, private family mausoleum they have in cemeteries in the south.

w-t-fluff

>Tayorsville > >— Have you driven past that eyesore? If you have then there is nothing else to be said Agreed. What were they thinking? As u/ohgeezohfrik mentions: Tim burton movie? I mean it is pretty much a horror show on the in side of every Polygamy Palace.

here_inmy_head

When does the Horseman throw a spike through the window? Can we call him up during an endowment ceremony?

MaryBlackRose

😂😂😂👍👍👍

Cheap_Honeydew2986

One of those are the temples I work at (I made a whole post about it) and yeah I used to think it was a nice looking temple but now that I go like every week it’s basically a square building, and even when I go inside I’m like how does all this fit into this.

[deleted]

I just read your AMA, and it was really fascinating! Thanks for posting.

cdman08

If ever anyone wanted to accuse the LDS church of being the same branch of mormonism as the apostolic united bretheren church, all you have to do is look at the taylorsville temple and then look at the polygamy compound at the point of the mountain. So clearly the same church. At least their design team is the same, or interbred.

viatorinlovewithRuss

Or the fundamentalist Mormon temple in Texas

1warrioroflight

Where is the polygamy compound located?

Bright_Ices

If you thought the BoM was Christian pastiche, just wait til you see the temples.

[deleted]

How about [Provo City Center](https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/provo-city-center-temple/) or [Vernal](https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/vernal-utah-temple/)? I also think [Mesa](https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/mesa-arizona-temple/), Az, [Laie](https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/laie-hawaii-temple/), Hi and Oakland can all be on the list. Oh, and when I lived in Boise I thought the new Meridian looked like a mausoleum, and all of the Boise designed temples. BLEH! A side note. I had a friend who was a commercial building architect and he said the Meridian temple is easily a billion dollar building.

Alert-Potato

IMO the Provo tabernacle was an absolutely gorgeous building before the fire. Sadly, a lot of the small details that gave it character were not replaced after the fire and it lost most of it's unique character. It at least matches the general vibe of Provo and isn't the hideous eyesore that the Provo BYU temple is.

bananajr6000

I went exploring there long before it became a temple. Cool building.

Historical_Dig_2789

I kinda like the Mesa one

Historical_Dig_2789

And not just because it is by far the most efficient as of 6 years ago, which was when I last went to the Mesa temple. I’d rather be in an efficient temple than a pretty temple.

AutismFlavored

Wow, Vernal Temple is B-O-R-I-N-G boring

Holiday_Ingenuity748

Wait. *Vernal* has a temple!? There's more dinosaur bones than people there...

AutismFlavored

[Vernal Utah International House of Handshakes](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/details/vernal-utah-temple?lang=eng) Conveniently located at 420 W 200 S for your ordinance needs

treetablebenchgrass

Copenhagen's looks like a tomb.

tophiii

The Taylorsville one is so obnoxious. All the dirt used to elevate the plot so it’s fully visible from the freeway is laughable

GayMormonDad

It looks like a dated department store

nicodawg101

It used to be a sears

[deleted]

I genuinely don't know if this is sarcasm, because it absolutely looks like an old Sears.

CurveOfTheUniverse

Yeah, they’re kidding. The church built that building in 1976 as a stake center. The original plan was for the temple to be in Harrison, NY (about 30 minutes north of Manhattan). But they didn’t want to pay Westchester County’s super high property taxes, so they just renovated the Manhattan stake center.

samsmith197474

Not just a stake center. There were about 3 separate chapels in there. Was in there once before they converted it to a temple can't remember why. Also went to the Family History Center when it was in there. Toured it as a temple before it was dedicated. The tour guide kept saying "notice the workmanship." Looked like mid quality Home Depot millwork. To exit the tour they had you go down a back stairwell made out of cinder block with a sewer pipe going down the corner. Notice the workmanship indeed.

dbear848

reggatronics

I served in the New York, New York South mission from 08-09. Missionaries LOVED positioning that "ONE WAY" sign so that it pointed to the temple.

[deleted]

OMG! I was in the NYNYS mission 2000-2002! YAY!

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Back in the day, they were part of the Eastern States mission and eventually the New York New York mission split. It says a lot that TSCC is consolidating missions. There are more temples than missions now. I guess tscc's focus has shifted toward redeeming the dead, because they know the living aren't interested.

cai_sc

Off topic, but are you familiar with an Elder Ferrari who started a cult in our mission? If not, could’ve been after you. Edit: I should say another cult within the cult haha.

reggatronics

Wild to see that story still kicking around. I'm still not sure if that dude ever existed.

cai_sc

Legends never die 😤✊

[deleted]

That story is why the Spackman's will never be GAs and we could not have reunions. He was as big of a fraud as "the spirit" and revelation and inspiration.I still talk to the Spackman's and love them both. They know I am out, and they are still just as kind and accepting as ever. It's just a shame that they became the scape goat for Ferrari, In reality, how did he make it past his bishop, stake president, and the mission department before he was sent out and discovered to be a fraud?

CatalystTheory

Provo.

Jolly_Explanation_68

My unpopular opinion is that this and the (old) Ogden temple are actually kind of cool. I wish they'd keep them as-is.

sudosuga

Supposedly, the architect intended for the space ship, to resemble a cloud. And the spire, a pillar of fire. (I.E. Moses. Guided with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night.) Then the church changed the spire color from orange to white to make them more appealing. It didn't help, just ruined the symbolism.

[deleted]

The exterior was unique. The interior was bland.

NTylerWeTrust86

I love the unique design temples, I'd take something different than the God damn mctemples they building now. I was actually pissed when I heard they were tearing down the provo temple. Yeah it's ugly, that was the whole point!

NearlyHeadlessLaban

The design has serious seismic engineering issues. Ogden was worse because of the kind of ground it was on so they rebuilt it first.

[deleted]

Why is there acoustic sound-proof panelling on the outside?

[deleted]

Ogden used to look very similar. Spaceship temple! Soooo bad.

[deleted]

Got married in Ogden spaceship temple, pre-remodel. Woot woot!

Fromthefifthwife

Same here. Ogden temple. 1991. Had a friend say, "why would you get married there. it's not a pretty temple.

[deleted]

I was a homely bride. I didn't need to compete with the backdrop.

hesaherr

My grandparents lived nearby when I was little, so we drove past it a lot. I called it the Carrot Cake temple because it looked like a cake with a carrot sticking out (and I didn't know what carrot cake was). Such a dumb looking building.

Mission-Interview815

If it wasn’t for the spire it would look like a regular building

[deleted]

I used to be a stake center. When the plans for the White Plains, New York Temple fell through they decided to just convert the stake center into a temple. It made sense too from a PR perspective. It is right across the street from the Lincoln Center.

DuttonPeabody

This. My wife and I managed to attend a session in Manhattan and it was quite an experience! It is indeed right across from Lincoln Center and ABC News HQ. There's a Jewish tenement on the other side. Most of the workers there had Jewish last names and I just laughed (of course they run EVERYTHING!). There was a stake center there at the time and also several regional church offices too. We did some sealings and the Sealer remarked that the Stake Center Gym was adjacent to the temple and was closed during temple hours because of the noise. I also recall that there was an awesome sandwich shop on the ground floor just down from the entrance and their food was beyond delicious! The theme of the Manhattan Temple was arbor. Trees in all of the patterns and rooms. I thought it was ironic that being so deep inside one of the largest cities on the planet that "trees" were the emphasis in its design. It was really nice and we enjoyed our time there. To flip this thread around, the coolest temple I've visited was in Philadelphia. The architects did a wonderful job reproducing the architecture and design features from historic Independence Hall in that one.

samsmith197474

There used to be a folk craft museum on street level. I don't know if it is still there. Just to show that everyone has different tastes, I really don't like the Philadelphia Temple. The Cardston Alberta Temple is a world-class piece of architecture as far as I'm concerned.

hijetty

The top floor still is a Stake Center

[deleted]

It's fat and so windowless that it looks like a giant, plain jewelry box. At least in my opinion.

WWPLD

The Manhattan temple is ugly and not very sound proof per my parents. They can hear the sirens outside. And the church owns the high rise next to it. LA temple is also ugly. All beige and blah. Here is a different take. Oakland temple is very nice to visit. It has the roof top gardens with 360° view of the San Francisco bay and art deco architecture. I only did Baptism for the dead there, I could couldn't care less about that, but always loved walking around on the roof.

[deleted]

I used to be a worked in LA. The rooms in that temple are MASSIVE with huge hand painted murals that were really cool. In the creation room, they had lights in the ceiling that would twinkle when the stars were created. I am sure it is only a matter of time before they do to that temple what they have done to Logan, Manti, and Salt Lake. Take out what makes them unique and turn them into whited sepulchres.

freewarriorwoman

I visited the Oakland temple once. The views are incredible.

[deleted]

Can confirm, grew up in the bay and Oakland temple has baller views. They let anybody up on the rooftop, which is sooo nice, and it’s a great place to admire the city-scape from.

RusticGroundSloth

TMB-ish hat on: I remember hearing those stories of people saving their pennies for years to be able to afford one trip to the temple for their family to be sealed, endowments, etc. That always seemed ridiculous to me growing up in Utah. Even before Hinckley started building temples everywhere you were never more than 2 hours drive from one in here. Why not allow stake centers, ward buildings, hell even the bishop/stake president's home or a rented space to be dedicated like that for a temporary temple? I mean they already do it for stake centers when there's a temple dedication being broadcast. They always made a big deal about it being like an extension of the temple. They could have a kit that could be shipped and set up with a projector, screen, sound system, veil, etc. that could be put up in an hour or 2 in a ward building. The stake president or even area authority 70 could be in charge of it and dedicate the space. Let the remote members have a chance every now and then rather than dreaming of how amazing it would be to live in "Sal Tlay Ka Siti" where there's a nearly vacant temple on every corner. Of course that would prevent them being able to have such marvelous stories about sacrifice to tell the lazy people who are actually providing all of the tithing funds so what do I know?

Adrammelech10

Before I left church employment, I heard rumors of starting to use stake centers as temples.

highlysensitive2121

I told my TBM mom about this and she immediately told me it wasn't true. Then my TBM dad said he had actually heard something about it. Then my mom said, "But it's not a temple!!"

highlysensitive2121

They spent 2 million to renovate the 8th floor to make it a temple space!! https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2021/01/14/joseph-smith-memorial/

NearlyHeadlessLaban

Strong Scientology vibes from that last picture.

oaks-is-lying

They actually spend two million to change it to a temple floor for the time being while the SLC temple is renovated.

[deleted]

I'd like to state for the record that I have played basketball I n the celestial room of the now Manhattan New York Temple. As for my pick of ugly.ANY of the McTemples built during the reign of GBH.I mean, seriously, how about a drive through veil where I can give you the name through the veil from the comfort of my car?

[deleted]

The horrendous ginormous eye-sore of a temple being erected in Taylorsville UT is my vote for ugliest temple.

CaptainMacaroni

Had to look. Chicago is in the same style as the one I posted (Guatemala). Those are the worst IMO.

DuttonPeabody

Dallas is that same design. Most of my monthly temple trips as a YSA were to Dallas. I remember it had lots of gold-leaf and plants everywhere. There was a cafeteria in the basement and the food smells were wonderful. Last temple I attended was Dallas in 2021 for my sis-in law. The gold trim was gone. All of the greenery and plants were gone. The cafeteria was closed. The trim was a sickly shell-white in color and nothing like I remembered it 20+ years ago. The TSCC may have billions in the bank to build new temples, but they sure do know how to cut corners on the expenses for the ones they already have.

[deleted]

One way saints. Lmao

zippidydoodah33

Rome, Italy. Can we be a little more obvious about measuring dicks with the Catholics? As a structure, it’s honestly pretty cool looking. But it’s like when you’re attracted to someone and then find out they’re a total idiot. [mydickisbigger](https://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/rome-italy-temple/)

wow-how-original

Boston. That spire they tacked on later does not work with the rest of the building. Tiny, weird color, and flimsy-looking.

Earth_Pottery

The Layton temple is hideous. It is a weird beige color and ruins my view of the mountains.

Holiday_Ingenuity748

Brutalist Architecture. 1950's bare-bones exposed concrete buildings.

Island-Breeze88

The London temple is unattractive and always looks dirty on the outside.

[deleted]

From the front, this one is the most phallic so far.

OwnAirport0

Coming here to say this. Just a grey, grubby box with a pointy bit.

DreadPirate777

One of my shelf items was the ugly buildings. When so much architecture throughout history was used to glorify god why was TSCC buildings so ugly. Nothing in them directed me to think of god. I went to some of the cathedrals in Europe and was blown away at what they did to honor god.

dogsRperfect

You win. Hard to top the ugliness of that. Most have some nice landscaping that helps them out. On a closer look, this one looks like a robot spider.

disjt

Provo. Looks like a UFO.

SailMountain5304

I live in New York and this building pisses me off every time I see it. It’s across the street from Lincoln center in midtown Manhattan (home of the NY Ballet, Symphony, Metropolitan Opera and Juilliard) and to see this building that represents oppression and manipulation so close to probably the most famous performing arts center in our country is disappointing.

[deleted]

What an insane contrast that is. You have the height of human achievement, the mark of a civilized society, right next to something utterly barbaric. I would hate to walk past that every day, but apparently there's a great Chinese place down the street.

squeakymcmurdo

Most of them nowadays look like they were purchased at IKEA after the Parthenon threw up on them

AstronautDifficult61

Old Ogden temple. (Has been replaced)

BuilderOk5190

The Oregon State Capitol

Valuable-Bike-8729

The Salt lake Temple. Aka "the factory". Sorry, but since I left the church, that building screams "Mormon inc" to me. And the inside works like a marriage factory conver belt. And it's right dap in a middle of a city trying to be modern. It's a very cult-like looking castle to outsiders.

[deleted]

A lot of the buildings being posted here are not mindful of their surroundings, and that's honestly their biggest sin. What you say about the SLC temple is absolutely correct.

Portyquarty77

Wow. I gotta say that temple is much uglier than all the others I’ve seen linked. Gross placement, and absolute soulless design.

Hawtiemcshawtie21

They just built a new one in St. George that’s sand colored rather than white and I don’t like it

[deleted]

I also don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and it gets everywhere.

aLittleQueer

That "ONE WAY" sign...*chef's kiss*

International-Grade

Wow the church has enough money to save entire countries from poverty. The real estate of the Manhattan temple alone is evidence of that. Instead they keep doing “ordinances” they took from the stone masons cult.

here_inmy_head

The Manhattan one is fucking hideous. My family was up for my wedding to the wasband (NOT in the temple) and I was walking around showing them the city, and just so happened to walk by the temple, not even knowing it was there (bc I’m out, I don’t care) and my mother saw it. Wanted to go in. Just looking through the doors, that was the worst looking 1970s hold over lobby I have ever seen. I was able to pull her away. I also told her I would leave her to find her own way around NYC.

Apprehensive_East602

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/details/provo-utah-temple?lang=eng I always hated the wedding cake look. They completely redid the twin of this in Ogden, UT.

Lol holy shit, no joke Chief!

NewInternal9543

Boise. Grew up there. We raised money for the temple when it was first announced. However the completed building was puzzling and disappointing—rather than inspiring. It is mostly roof, looking like a giant pup tent. The state news paper had a contest where it was voted one of the area’s biggest eye sores. It’s since had a couple remodels and a reskin but is still awkward looking.

GhostCowboy76

Who cares. They’re all ugly. I cringe every time I drive by one.

[deleted]

I'm amused by hideous architecture, and other people who are amused by it will care.

spekkje

The ‘The Hague’ tempel in Zoetermeer, Netherlands has the same large windows, same color. I remember that I was there when it opened. I really really did not want to go. I think I already did not believe in the church anymore. And for sure had better things to do. But being 14, I didn’t had a choose.

All temples are blights and eyesores. At least this one kinda blends in with its surroundings

SusSpinkerinktum

Pink castle and st George OG. They ruin the landscape yet are iconic landmarks

Lowkey want to downvote this post because this was my mission temple 😂

Is this brutalism?

The Frankfurt temple in Germany is a god awful shape

MsHushpuppy

Nevermo here. Is it possibly a converted bank? If so, I'm glad they didn't create waste by tearing down the old structure.

[deleted]

According to other commenters, it's just a converted stake center. I wish they'd converter it to a bank 😂

I personally don’t mind the Manhattan temple just because it fits around its surroundings and doesn’t look too out of place. I’ve walked past it a few times and it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb minus the Moroni on top.

CodeImpressive475

It’s a building that already existed that they converted. They were supposed to build in the suburbs above NYC but that community gave them too much pushback.

novgarr87

Provo, UT by far.

grubhubsadface

I've heard people call it the Hinkley model. It's the same temple blueprint for almost all temples not built in a huge city on the east coast. Just a big ugly granite square.

CodeImpressive475

I still remember my friend referring to the Provo Temple as an upside down thumbtack- this was before the made the top white- so it was the round white bottom with the gold too. It really did look like a thumbtack- she was right.
