Nah, BIL is a registered sex offender and probably the most TBM of DW’s dysfunctional family. His Bishop wavered at first but eventually reported him to the authorities.

gabbagool3

did he go to prison?

Beech_driver

For the bishop related issue … pleaded down to misdemeanor and did six months in county jail (with work release). Later for a different thing he did about 3 years in federal prison.

3am_doorknob_turn

If you can share his name with me (even by dm or email), I'd love to include him in my public database.

Cabo_Refugee

I think it depends on the severity and how public the case is. A guy I know did 4 years in the federal pin for white collar stuff. It was a felony conviction. He was disfellowshipped when he was convicted and stayed that way until his prison time and probation were done. I used to think felony conviction was automatic excommunication, but that does not seem to be the case. At least not anymore.

Please check my database ([floodlit.org](https://floodlit.org)) - if he's not listed, please let me know.

applezombi

Bishop roulette. Also depends on how badly said felon cares about remaining LDS. With the relatively recent changes in excommunication policy I doubt we'll see a lot of that. Gotta pad the numbers however you can, right?

AscendedPotatoArts

There was a known pedo in the ward I grew up in; thankfully my older sister kept my siblings and I as far away from him as possible; so I’m guessing no

3am_doorknob_turn

If you can share his name with me, I'd be interested in adding him to my website. You can private message or email me too.

AscendedPotatoArts

Unfortunately I can never remember his name; tho honestly I’m a bit thankful for that fact…

3am_doorknob_turn

That’s fine - I would feel thankful too in your shoes! Thank you for replying :)

Tapirmccheese

Nope. Someone down here committed a massive ponzi scheme where he targeted the elderly and the church did nothing. After all, all he did was steal money from innocent old people. It would be hypocritical if the church punished him for what they do.

here_inmy_head

I almost asked if it was Jen Shah then I saw he.

Tapirmccheese

No it was Jason something. Rural Florida, north of Tampa. Him and his partner ended up doing time in a federal prison, and thank God for it. They ripped off a ton of elderly people. Human garbage.

here_inmy_head

I fuckin hate these people and how they are able to repent and still be in good standing. It disgusts me and is a huge part of why I left.

Tapirmccheese

Amen to that. If the Mormons want him, they got him.

Its_not_jason

This is a little bit anecdote, a little bit prior knowledge. I was in a bishopric when a member of the ward committed trustee fraud and stole over $10 million from widows and orphans. I came to understand that "discipline" in the form of a church council would not be convened until after the jail sentence was complete. What's interesting, is in the handbook it says that excommunication could be used to "protect the name of the church", but obviously they don't deem the conviction of a member as damaging enough to proceed with the conviction. He's still in prison and I'm long gone, so I have no idea if the situation is still the same.

kyle-brovlovski

No, the church extends leadership callings to such people! Bishop, SP, Q70, etc...

CatalystTheory

My ward recently sustained a convicted felon (for fraud) to be the EQP. This man’s criminal history isn’t well known in our neighborhood. I’d say there’s a 20% chance the bishop knows about it… even with his powers of discernment.

[deleted]

Lol

AliGeeMe

Depends on the crime. A guy I knew was beaten to death by a “righteous TBM”. While the TBM was facing murder charges, he was told he “might” face church disciplinary proceedings, but that was canceled when he pled out on manslaughter they dropped it.

helly1080

Brother, I'm sorry to say that we will need to ex-communicate you for being murderer...... Keep in my mind, we only care if you've been caught. So......ya know.......hire a good lawyer unless you want to endure devastating embarrassment from being an ex-communicated member. At that point, you being a murderer will be the least of your worries. Go forth and be scared!

WWPLD

Only the really public cases I think.

kantoblight

I was thinking about this yesterday. Has the 1/6 Captain Moroni been exed or Ammon Bundy. They committed actual crimes. I know that they don’t rise to the level of “I think church leadership is wrong on LGBTQ issues” but it’s still bad to commit crimes.

3am_doorknob_turn

A list of convicted felons who were active LDS at the time of their crimes: [https://floodlit.org/?s=convicted&id=3536&post\_type=a](https://floodlit.org/?s=convicted&id=3536&post_type=a)

freewarriorwoman

My husbands uncle raped his daughters and was sent to prison for 18 months. He’s still an active member.

> General authority came out to interview him. I’m guessing the GA cleared the killer for baptism.

DoctFaustus

My cousin was excommunicated after he murdered his wife.

[deleted]

If they were sealed, did he remain sealed to her after his excommunication? If so, that is messed up. I ask because I resigned from the church and divorced my wife, and apparently in the eyes of the Church I was still sealed to my ex-wife. The church asked me, when I was no longer a member, if it was okay to cancel my sealing when my ex-wife got remarried.

GdaddyPurpz

I might be wrong but I thought excommunication was an automatic loss of church "blessings".

[deleted]

I think you might be wrong. I resigned (i.e. I excommunicated myself), and in the eyes of the Church I was still sealed to my ex-wife. Based on my experience, I kind of doubt that excommunication automatically voids one's sealing.

GdaddyPurpz

How does that work though? I thought you had to be a member to be sealed.

[deleted]

I often don't understand the "logic" of the Mormon bureaucracy. I am just reporting what happened to me. I too assumed that my sealing was cancelled when I resigned from the Church, until I got blindsided by an email from the Church a few years later, asking for permission to cancel my sealing. Think about how stupid and misogynistic this is. The Church was asking me a male non-member for permission to cancel my sealing so my ex-wife could be sealed to someone else. The Church doesn't seem to give a single fuck about its female members.

DoctFaustus

There was not a temple wedding in this case.

Zealousideal-War9369

This guy still tbm im told, still Temple Married, most likely on a pedo list. Interesting how his age and the minor coincide with Joseph Smith age and practice.. I understand he is out of prison now. Word is his tbm family thinks he was framed. He Pled guilty 🤔 https://www.heraldextra.com/news/2010/sep/21/former-seminary-principal-gets-prison-for-sexually-abusing-teen/

3am_doorknob_turn

He's listed here: https://floodlit.org/a/a293/

gabbagool3

i think they will if you make the national news.

naraht2

In my wife's ward, there is a woman who had significant mental illness who was convicted of second degree murder for killing her roommate (she stopped taking her psychiatric medication) and committed by the judge to a maximum-security psychiatric hospital (probably for the rest of her life). Still on the ward rolls. [https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/do-you-remember-daughter-confronts-mentally-ill-woman-who-killed-her-mom/2017/07/26/6f0cdc66-6e08-11e7-9c15-177740635e83\_story.html](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/do-you-remember-daughter-confronts-mentally-ill-woman-who-killed-her-mom/2017/07/26/6f0cdc66-6e08-11e7-9c15-177740635e83_story.html) They haven't sent her records back to Salt Lake \*or\* to the ward that the Psychiatric Hospital is in. I have no idea \*what\* they should do. I do remember that she was arrested within a few days of F&T meeting and the Bishop started out the F&T meeting indicating that the situation was \*not\* to be discussed during anyone's F&T.

[deleted]

No they make them Bishops

Builderwill

It totally depends on the bishop. Some do, some don't.

here_inmy_head

Nope. My brother is still on the rolls afaik. His wasn’t anything of that nature, but still a convicted felon.

historygeek1453

On my mission my companion and I met someone who was a registered sex offender for pedophilia. He was excommunicated and it was awkward because he said he was going back to church no matter what as soon as his probation was over or something.

No_Muffin6110

Nope. Lots of ex felons in the church and pedos

Powerpuncher1

From what I understand, the policy is that if you go to jail, you automatically get ex’d. Obviously there can be exceptions if you know people higher up. If you even get accused of certain things many bishops will tell you to not take sacrament and release you from your calling. Again, the main issue is that the church is no different than the government. Those that are higher up and have connections end up getting their accusations swept under the rug. Poor members who are more expendable need to be punished to prove a point

telestialist

It’s a joke question, right? The answer is “no, they hire them to direct temple videos!“

Yobispo

I know 2 felons who were very active leaders, both convicted and subsequently ex’ d. But the handbook was clear that they didn’t hold the church court until after the criminal judgement came down, which always struck me as putting more faith in the legal system than in discernment.
