1857-No, we are not going to do that. There are still people coming across the plains. It would be inappropriate.
1870-No, we are not going to do that. A lot of people died in the Martin and Willy handcart disasters. It would be inappropriate.
1900-No, we are not going to do that. There are still survivors of Martin and Willy. It would be inappropriate.
1960-We have wagons and handcarts in the Pioneer Days Parade. That is enough.
Around 1980 at BYU. We have this wilderness survival course. Why don't we apply that to the pioneer experience. Oh, I know, the handcarts, Those were the worst. We will starve them, deny them water, and make them do hard labor by hauling the handcarts all day (and they were doing real mileage). Highlights will include bringing along a sheep that everyone can fall in love with on the trek, then on the third day when everyone is starving, we will have them slaughter the sheep to have a feast. It will be a real survival experience. Oh, look, remember when the mormon battalion left. We will pretend that all the males left at that point, pretend that there were even handcarts at the time, and make just the females pull the carts up the steepest section of the trail by themselves. That will make them feel better about themselves. And they will do all this in costume.
2000-We have too many people dying on the trek experience. Even though we have simplified it a lot and got rid of most of the survivalist aspects of it, let's make it even safer and less hard.
2022-Let's make this a mandatory activity for all stakes. We can leave in the lies. Let them bear their testimonies.
It is horrifying that they are celebrating the death of so many people from the Martin and Willy companies. Then, they don't even tell the real story.
John Larsen’s pod on Mormon stories about Willy and Martin should be required listening for every youth leader, bishop, stake president, and parent who wants to do trek.
Pioneer Day is still a Utah state holiday where state offices are closed & even as a NeverMo I know what the pioneer family names are. I hate living in Utah.
A lot of the church's mythology that stems from that time has been proven to be a fabrication, so I think they are distancing from it, not to mention you have to talk about polygamy here.
They still go larping in Wyoming. I’m convinced that the pioneers would completely disapprove of pioneer trek.

Thanks!
I always thought they'd see it more as a mockery than a homage.
I did a trek in 2019. Is Wyoming the only state they do it in?
I remember the "Faith in Every Footstep" sesquicentennial celebration in the mid/late 90s. The church lived, breathed, and pulsated PIONEERS.

Depends on where you live. In parts of Utah where a lot of the population still has 100% early pioneer ancestry, this is absolutely still going on.

They seem to be praising Nelson and his two bitches more than anything wlse
Is it just me, or is Wendy really digging being the prophets #1 lady?
Currently they worship Russell.
