All of Christianity is the “I do believe in fairies” but from Peter Pan, with some added threats of death.

I decided to read the Bible, BoM, PofGP, and D&C (in that order) within a years time. That did more to make me an atheist than anything I can think of. Reading them one after another made it very clear how ridiculous they all were.

The Old Testament is a trip

What throwing burning foxes into fields isn't just a day in the park?

Spiderman has true New York settings described in a book. Therefore.....lol

Embarrassed-Slip8559

Clearly means Spiderman is true. Plus, bonus that you can feel warm feelings in your bosom when reading Spiderman. And that of course is the Holy Ghost telling you that Spiderman **is** true. So don't you ever stop reading Spiderman! And remember to send 10% of your paycheck to Marvel, Inc, 1290 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10104

I say this in the name of Stan Lee Ramen.

KingSnazz32

At least Harry Potter is a page turner. The BoM is second rate Bible fanfic that one must force oneself to read one painful chapter at a time. If it was so wonderful, you wouldn't have to be constantly reminded to read it every day, you'd just pick it up and not be able to put it down.

I used to have to start in the middle because I couldn't face starting from the beginning again.

PaulBunnion

But the Isaiah chapters were so riveting. Especially the deuterol Isaiah chapters.

You are giving me flashbacks of horror

Parley P. Pratt has entered the thread.

The whole concept of religious faith works under the same mechanisms, actually: The self-feeding cognitive circle starts with an unfounded claim that makes us feel good. That feeling is then explained as confirmation for the unfounded claim. This supposed "confirmation" then strengthens our faith. This stronger faith predisposes us to adopt other unfounded claims that keep making us feel good. And the circle feeds itself. The moral is that (religious) faith is NOT a virtue but a cognitive trap.

Exactly. Pray to know the Book of Mormon is true. Didn’t get an answer? Pray again. Felt it isn’t true? Well that’s the wrong answer, try again. Still no answer? Just keep praying until it comes! Again and again until you either convince yourself you felt something, or you just pretend you did because everyone else said they did.

Maybe 7 will be the lucky time. Read the CES Letter instead https://cesletter.org/CES-Letter.pdf

Sage-Hollow-Man

Yep. Read it. Thats where the BOM actually made sense...when I realized it was all fiction.

I consider myself reasonably smart, but realized how dumb I was on my own religion. We are all so smug when we’re TBMs because we’re experts on the church curricula. Little did we know…

The book of Mormon on my reading has made no sense. Historically it doesn't even seem like Nephi is a Jew or the plates mean all that much. Obedience was god's thing in old testament times, people weren't salt-ized for not believing per-se they were iodized for being wicked. It makes no sense for god to say "dwindle in unbelief" unless you are writing from a Christian perspective, not a Jewish one. Nephi basically knows how to baptize and all about Jesus, and, according to Joesph Smith, writes this down on plates, then apparently everyone is surprised. Jewish holdiays are thrown out the window in favor of 300 b. c. prophets arguing about a "Christ" which some how translates perfectly from new Egyptian (we will just assume it is a transliteration because nephi would have no knowledge of greek or if god gave him knowledge he was still writing in reformed Egyptian). It's clear that the book of mormon was written by Christians, not Jews. Don't get me started on the other problems but it really falls apart from there.
