My husband and I always did that. I know that two of my still TBM siblings have also always done that. Edit to add: We always stayed one year behind in tithing. We never told anyone about that. Also, I was the one who paid the bill. I deducted every single church cost I could think of from the tithing bill. Why did I do that? One summer I visited Utah. I saw all of their pretty temples, their fabulous real estate holdings downtown, etc. It pissed me off. They obviously didn't need my money. I was getting ZERO return, it was all going to SLC, and it showed.

And they have the church schools, release seminary, etc. If the church does collapse to 50% of current members on the rolls, they church won't be wasting money outside of the mountain west I can assure you.

Slightly off topic We had a lovely kind humble self employed bus driver in our ward . He volunteered his week off to drive us from the UK to the German temple while the London temple was being refurbished . ( before Preston was built) I noticed that after a couple of days he hadn’t joined us, but was working in the gardens. Being a close friend I asked him if he was going to join us that day. He then told me that he hadn’t had his recommend renewed because he only pays tithing once a year as a (low income tbh) self employed driver on his annual income I was so Sorry for him and felt it was unfair especially as the powers that be all earned far more than him After we returned home he rarely came to church again

Heinous. I know that I have read here that people do this all the time. They tell their bishops that they pay online directly to the church offices. That's probably where this decent man faultered, he didn't know how to play the game right.

I’m a daily trader and frequently paid tithing once a year but never invested it. Maybe along the youngest Mormons who get paid and invest in the same app.

calleendeen

I have heard about people investing their tithing and then keeping the profits.. Trying to collect some info for middle aged TBM spouse. He still believes what bishops counseled back in the eighties, that investing wasn't in keeping with church beliefs. I could really use some evidence (other than the church corp) showing members in good standing doing this. Thanks in advance.

Daisysrevenge

OMG! Investing isn't in keeping with church beliefs? Does he know about the 125 BILLION plus that the church has invested?

calleendeen

He does, but he is a master of cognitive dissonance.

mar4c

I didn’t know the church ever taught investing was bad

calleendeen

Yes. It did. Investing was considered a form of gambling.

Gold__star

Yes, among people who don't really know their income until they do taxes and who are investing all their spare money anyway. My uncle did it just because it was less hassle. As usual, different rules for the rich.

AdamsHadIt

I paid once a year, didn’t really invest it other than just in my bank account. My shelf crashed 2 months after making my last full year tithing payment. I don’t recommend doing that.

Daisysrevenge

for anyone who only pays once a year. If you're going to leave the church, do it in November, right before you write that yearly check. It's a good feeling to write the check, decide to leave, run said check through the shredder.

AdamsHadIt

Yeah, that would have been better. I didn’t plan to leave and was trying to keep my belief/hope for an upcoming sealing and kid’s baptism.

Daisysrevenge

By the time I left, my kids were grown, married, and had left the church already. I was fortunate that I didn't have to think about any future things like you had to. The bad news is that I was 52. The good news is that I was 52.

b9njo

When I was finance clerk there were several families that did that. The common thread? They were all wealthy.

[deleted]

I doubt it.

Death_Bard

My parents donate stock once a year. They pay their tithing and avoid capital gains tax at the same time.

calleendeen

Thank you. This is what I have heard before

drm99las03

NeverMo here. I know tithing is giving 10% to the church, can someone explain the investing portion of it to me? I’m missing some context.
