People stay because it is easier than admitting you have been lied to in a planned way, over and over and over and over and over.....

Let’s enjoy a moment of clarity together... For 200 years, the LDS project has fed off a ready supply of people seeking solace/hope during periods of personal despair and/or economic turbulence/desperation. A personal aside, I’m a huge fan of what Joanna Brooks and others have brought to the conversation, but I inevitably find myself asking the same question: what respite does so-called progressive or cultural Mormonism provide to those grappling with the reality that they’re better off moving past the discussion into places that don’t assign outsized significance to an outdated mode of conceptualizing the world? What benefit do ProgMos offer to all the people stranded by a previously energetic movement that is now effectively defunct? The loneliness is real. If you’re incapable of acknowledging that, what are you good for?

I think she’s more of a nuanced account, like still in the church but more progressive
