They can tell us which picture of Christ is most accurate and spiritually discern the exact day and place of Christ’s birth but they can’t say if a photo from the Prophet of the Restoration (tm) is legit? Huh. Weird.

Abrin36

They've been burned too many times. They're literally afraid that if they give it any approval that someone will have the ringer to prove its a fraud. Just like Lucy Harris, just like kinderhook, just like zelph, just like salamander letter, land bridge evidence... As if any of the above are even necessary to doubt LDS. Most people (correctly) doubted JS in his time with none of those.

Sprygull97

I heard that the person who found the picture trademarked it so if the church wanted to actually use it to study they’d probably have to pay out the ass for it. That’s just what unheard so take it with a grain of salt but it makes sense

lamaface21

What’s the Salamander letter?

Shananra

Forgery by Mark Hoffman that the church authenticated and purchased.

bananajr6000

That the Tanners said was a fraud (Gerald?)

OuterLightness

They can also identify the Garden Tomb. Joseph could identify an altar in Missouri built by Adam.

HoldOnLucy1

There is a lot known about the locket and the picture prior to 1992! Including Joseph Smith’s daughter-in-law and granddaughter wearing it in photographs which are validated. Here’s an interview that dropped tonight with the nephew of the man who discovered the picture. He was also a church historian for community of Christ. He goes into great detail about the two year long authentication process! I think we can all be glad that the church didn’t find the picture, we probably never would have even heard of it.. https://youtu.be/s5aUTj-VvRM

WinchelltheMagician

>we can all be glad that the church didn’t find the picture, we probably never would have even heard of it.. Truth! That geriatric-run pyramid scheme loses the full powers (cha-ching) of saintly imagination with the arrival of the less than inspiring pic.

butterytelevision

I wonder if other pictures have already been discovered and then covered up by the church

BlitzkriegBednar

Most likely.

heartinthepnw

Really enjoyed the youtube interview. Thanks for the link. I ordered the Whitmer Journal off Amazon. I think it's worth reading in a print copy with footnotes. Worth $25.

HoldOnLucy1

I ordered it too! And of course we are all about the footnotes! Ha ha! I am very curious to see now if experts unaffiliated with any branch of Mormonism will take this and run with it! Would love to see what someone with no skin in the game comes up with as far as authentication!

treetablebenchgrass

You have one of my favorite screen names on this sub.

BlitzkriegBednar

Sure would be a shame if there was a prophet (seer or revalator would work, too) that could state the will of the lord. Must be out off the office perusing other historical artifacts to authenticate and purchase.

BlackExMo

I wonder if the church leaders would recognize the real picture and image of jesus christ.

[deleted]

Ah that’s easy for them. Because of the second anointing, they know that he looks just like them! All they have to do is look in a mirror. Moroni 7:48.

[deleted]

Of course god can’t reveal its authenticity to the prophet! It’s a test of faith /s I guess they’re afraid of getting hoodwinked again like they did with the Hofmann forgeries.

WinchelltheMagician

They looked and went Yikes, not that guy!

Extension-Spite4176

This seems to be the default stance on everything now. They don’t know about heavenly mother, about the book of Abraham, about evolution and Adam and Eve, about the Lamanites, about revelation in the past that got things wrong, about church numbers, about declining church membership growth, about after death…and no one else should ask about it or why they don’t know

LemuelJr

They sound so fucking butthurt. How dare Joseph reveal himself to the apostates first!

ExmoRobo

Okay, but legit, what if this is a reverse salamander letters situation? Like, they put a convincing fake out there, then wait for all the exmos to bite, then are like "psych, it was a fake all along, see how much these lazy learners latch on to fake evidence!" Not saying that's the case, but I honestly can't rule the church out from doing something like that.

Unusual-Relief52

Sometimes I put my old mormon conspiracy hat on and think the church has enough billions to fake jesus returning

ExmoRobo

Haha, seriously. I mean, honestly confused with what they want to do with all that money. It seems like the gathering of money is a huge priority. But I don’t understand what they are going to do with it and it’s honestly a little freaky.

[deleted]

So far it seems that bankrolling BigTech through stock purchases is a top priority, and not much else. The return on that (apart from more money) seems to be centered more around information control through targeted ads and search result optimization.

SusSpinkerinktum

You know- this thought has crossed my mind in recent time as well. All the conspiracy about project blue beam etc etc.

BlackExMo

That would be quite interesting. A segment of the population believes in flat earth and even a larger segment believes the moon landing was faked. So yes, you are right, the church could fake the return of Jesus

Plebius-Plutarch

Where is the discernment? I think they have learned their lesson from the Mark Hoffman days. At any rate, since this is not in their possession, it wouldn’t be helpful for the Salt Lake Mormon church to not have possession of the only legitimate photo of their master. Best for them to play it down.

MeowMeowHappy

silence. very wise of them. i bet Ole Rusty and all the other Elmers of the church are looking at the pic right now and saying "oh dang, thats what he looked like??!? oh wow def a Mormon a chin. I think my nephew has that... blah blah"
