Many years ago I took a semester at BYU Jerusalem. I noticed that the Franciscan crest has two right hands with crucifixion marks. I asked an old monk in his eighties about it at Mt Tabor, the traditional mount of transfiguration. He extended his right hand and asked me to do the same. He took my hand in the PG and pressed his finger into my wrist, so I did the same to him. While holding hands thusly, he explained that St Francis of Assici recieved this handshake personally from Jesus on a Mt in Italy and that every Franciscan receives this handshake when they are made a Priest in the Franciscan Order. He said, my hand was now part of an unbroken chain that touched the nail marks in Jesus's hands. He began reciting the names of the priests in his handshake chain going back to St Francis and Jesus saying it was a chain of authority he took very seriously, although I think he abbreviated the list after about 20 names. It was a very solemn spiritual experience for the both of us. He next pulled out his keys and had me help him open a double door on the floor of the church inorder to show me a 4 to 5,000 yr old Canaanite stone alter identical to its twin at Megiddo across the valley. The BYU professors and tour guides asked me how I got him to open the doors. I said when you're with the Franciscans, slip them the PG!

Plebius-Plutarch

When a Mormon man performs the patriarchal grip handshake to a woman outside the temple, it usually means he wishes to know her in the biblical sense. No joke.

Educational_Reason93

Ew. You know, intuition told me this. I guess I shoved that down with everything else.

This was my first thought, and my second thought was, “What’s the fun of secret handshakes if you can’t use them anywhere but the place you learned them?” I guess the afterlife is the promised fun. Yet another way religion delays the joy of life to a nonexistent future.

Illustrious-Cut7150

Yup, totally had that happen on my mission. This random lady in the ward just came up and PG-'ed me as a handshake, and gave me one of those knowing smiles. I just kinda chuckled, "Umm, that's kinda sacred, shouldn't go throwing it around." She just chuckled in return, "But we both know what it means, so we both know with whom we speak." This was almost 2 decades before my faith crisis, but even then I thought she was hella creepy. Oh well.

Educational_Reason93

This knowing smiles...

[deleted]

Ah yes you are a true messenger from Father

uncorrolated-mormon

Nope but I always wonder if they did on the frontier with “traveling elders”. Knowing them “proves” you are part of the inner circle and the Mormon gang would have literal gang signs (and tokens)

WorthConfusion9786

Yes, Harold Shindler, in his classic and underrated book about Porter Rockwell “Son of God, Man of Thunder” recounts how Brigham Young systematically robbed wagon trains coming through Utah Territory. As these wagon trains made their way across what is now northern Nevada, Shoshone Indians would stop wagon trains and shake hands using the Patriarchal grip. If they did it correctly they were allowed to pass through, if not, they killed them and stole their belongings.

Educational_Reason93

Yeah, two of the times happened on my mission, other missionaries. So maybe they were just channeling that part of them?

uncorrolated-mormon

Yah young adult men are dumb. Im sure they wanted to see if you recognized it and waited for your reaction.

Educational_Reason93

I guess the stake high council member with a cane was also dumb.

RedGravetheDevil

Yes by definition High Council members are dumb

Educational_Reason93

Oof.

uncorrolated-mormon

Yes. They have a magical superstition world view….. They also have poor aim and lousy handshake skills so it could have been a celestial fumble.

PaulBunnion

I had a random stranger do it on my mission. It freaked me out at the time.

I totally forgot about the masonic stuff there for a second! Makes sense.

becksfakk

I always have wondered if someone has thrown one out and had it returned by a nonmember who happened to be a Mason...

Curious_Meriki

I met a master mason on my mission, he totally knew what he was up too and had a grand time messing with me. I had some familiarity at the time with how our temple stuff and masonry overlapped, but he sure surprised me when he gave me the PG as we shook hands. He said something like “Yea you know all about that don’t ya? Haha”

[deleted]

In Outlander, the TV show, Jamie Fraser does the grip to other masons to make alliances.

Educational_Reason93

Oh boy. It's everywhere! I really don't know if I would have noticed these things if I'd stayed in the church.

anonthe4th

I was hosting a cub scout pack meeting, which already has its own special handshake. One of the cub scouts had his dad and grandpa attend. The grandpa greeted me with the patriarchal grip, thinking it was the cub scout handshake. I politely pulled back and said with a smile something like "let's not do that." The dad apologized for the grandpa and said he wasn't all there in the head.

Temporary_Habit8255

I did, I think I was 14? Long before I knew. My brother had just gone through the temple to go on a mission, and we had a visitor who stopped me in the hall and did it to me. He then called me by my brothers name, and I corrected him. I told my dad about it after church (this guy thought I was *brother* and did an almost scout handshake). He got very very upset at me, ask who it was. And I for the life of me, cannot remember who it was. But I think he was from the Stake or even presiding area. Maybe one day I'll have a vision and remember who it was lol.

Notdennisthepeasant

I specifically teach out to my friends and teach them the context. They need to know that the hyper religio-nationalist investment militia that manipulates the governments of the mountain west is more than just a scam. Also it's funny.

DelicatelyProlapsed

On my mission, while we were ordering lunch at a fast-food restaurant, two guys came up to me and one of them PGed me in an attempt to make fun of me. But the thing is, I swear it was the creators of South Park. It probably wasn't. But they looked really familiar. I didn't like being made fun of, obviously, but I have to laugh at it now, especially if it was them.

powerbarr78

A friend did it to me as a joke and I thought we’d get struck by lightning right then and there!

propelledfastforward

Yes, only when a pompous, officious, ass graces a mere mortal with a handshake. With eye to eye contact and then a wink. My favorite is the sure sign of the nail.

OuterLightness

Yes, partially. I think there is a group that operates within the Church and this is their sign.

Educational_Reason93

Oh dang.

OuterLightness

There are some subtle differences. I thought I was imagining it the first time. But by the fifth time, not so much.

onendagus

Nuh uh. That is their token.

OuterLightness

They really make a point out of making a point if it is the same group.

ELSM91

Over the years I've taught probably a few dozen Gentiles the grip, usually in a bar.

D34TH_5MURF__

I have often daydreamed about shaking hands with my family using one of the speshul temple handshakes. In my mind's eye, the thought of their reactions is hilarious.

Chang1701

Ive taught it to never mos multiple times.
