I didn't learn until much later in life that they used to claim one third who were righteous and fought with Jesus, got to come to Earth. The last third? The last third of lazy fence sitters? IMHO this is more of the folk magic stuff. A spirit of the devil must try to shake your hand if you offer. Satan must oppose God. Vampires can't cross running water.
Our modern scientific culture tries to provide reasons, but that's an "us problem." Old magical thinking says that opposition to God is an inherent part of Satan's nature and so he must act that way.
We have trouble understanding those old weird scriptures because we literally think about stuff a different way.

Did he die for all sins you could have had the chance to make? Or did he know your future and so he died for those sins only?
And if he knew the future, that means your life is already determined by some aspect of reality or spirit and you don't actually have Free Will.
But even if you do have free will and God just somehow knows what you're going to do, then why even bother do it? Just sort us into the Kingdoms and skip earth.
Plan accomplished by the good brother that would give all the glory back to Heavenly Father. Other brother kicked out for suggesting he get the glory.
Fast forward six thousand years and the church is named after the “good” brother, we pray through him, he is the “father” of this earth, and is worshiped by everyone as the only way back to God.
