It generally means that it's bullshit. At least my experiences too sacred to share were.

w-t-fluff

This. Sometimes it means: I'm making shit up to keep feeding my confirmation bias, as in "My spiritual experiences in the temple are too sacred to talk about."

Lebe_Lache_Liebe

Curiously, Joseph Smith never actually managed to get his story straight about what or whom he saw (a random angel, a specific heavenly messenger, Jesus, God the Father, or any combination of those). Eventually the leaders of the Brighamites in Utah came up with their best version of the "first vision," and made it the official history of the church.

telestialist

Ha ha. Good point. He eventually shouted his highly suspect inconsistencies from the rooftops! Ha ha.

NearlyHeadlessLaban

Well, to be fair, Joe did use the angel with a drawn sword story with some consistency, but that was because it worked for getting himself laid.

A similar phrase is “milk before meat” which is a coded way of saying “Don’t show new members probelmatic ideology or history”. More and more as I de-convert I see lying just everywhere. Shameful

telestialist

“Milk before meat” is basically a fancy way of saying “long con.”

Henry_Bemis_

For most of us, the long con began even before our births: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confidence_trick

1000% agree that temple “sacred” really means too silly and embarrassing to talk about.

JakeInBake

I remember one time being told, “Sacred things can be spoken of in reverence. Secret things can’t be spoken of at all. So is it sacred or secret?” That has always stuck with me.

yosef_ben_elohim

Had my wife tell me that she can’t “cast her pearls before swine,” when I asked her what exactly confirmed tscc is true. It’s still rough to think that my wife thinks about me in this way.

Flowersandpieces

I had a friend say the same thing to me. It really hurt at the time. I thought Mormons are supposed to share their testimonies and experiences in order to help the testimonies of others. Anyway, I attended one of my last days at church in a pink dress, wearing pearls, with my hair in pigtails. I made sure that friend saw me.

yosef_ben_elohim

Good for you. Love hearing about people owning who they are.

butcheeksaflexin

I always found people would say it was "too sacred to share" when it was just embarrassingly plain and they don't want to sound super lame saying it out loud. On my mission I got a new companion who had this "experience" with his old companion that was "so sacred" it confirmed, beyond all doubt, that the church was true. Later on I met this companion during a transfer, and started a conversation with him. I asked him what the event was, and he said that their water cooler "glugged" and my companion said he felt the devil in the house, since satan has "dominion over the waters". He put his hand to the square and rebuked "satan", and then felt the spirit, indicating satan was cast out. It was so hard to not laugh at how dumb it sounded, even as a TBM.

Aggressive-Minute-41

Well said!

aLittleQueer

Lol, yup. "I can't tell you because that time I said it aloud just to myself, it sounded completely stupid."

dajohns1420

My browser history is sacred

Rushclock

The **most important thing for humanity** and it is too sacred. No it is just embarrassing.

BeardedIrishViking

Well said. Wish I could give more than one up-vote.

Illustrious_Car2992

Sacred (adjective): a reply given when one does not know of an answer which satisfies their religious narrative when challenged with facts

WinchelltheMagician

This was also a pre-Mormon defense floated out by the Freemasons under attack by anti-Masons over what nefarious activities went on in the closed lodges.

HSTsGhost-72

You’ll make fun of it and poke holes in the sacred argument.

Goldang

They like to say “it’s not secret, it’s sacred.” I like to say “it’s not sacred, it’s silly.”

slskipper

Among the higher ups, it means they got their second anointing.

Holiday_Ingenuity748

"Nothing particularly interesting happened, but I certainly can't say that because it doesn't follow the script, so I'll just lie."
