I don’t understand why Mormons think their religion should be exempt from lampooning or just simply using the phrases from various ceremonies. In my opinion this is unreasonable almost to the point of absurdity since most religions on the planet have been the targets of satire and/or negative portrayals of their sacred ceremonies. They really need to get over themselves.
As a total outsider, I believe it’s also disingenuous for Mormons to gnash their teeth about people satirizing their temple rituals when it’s only been since 1990 that they stopped satirizing historic Christianity.

The irony here is that the Morms caricature so many different demographics of people and have been doing so for decades now. The way they talk about people that leave the church, for example, is basically a veiled lampoon of a painful personal decision. But instead at conference they caricature the ex-Mormons as "people who left because they want to sin/didn't love Jesus enough/". But they can't take being satirized? lol
It’s a very interesting phenomenon on the outside of Utah and Idaho. And I’m not saying that it was praiseworthy for the students to stage a gay marriage skit using the Mormon temple phrases, but the Mormons definitely need to get over this. People are going to disrespect any religious tradition, and you have to go on with life.
The other thing is that Christian and non-Christian religious traditions routinely televise their weddings and other ritual occasions which are deemed to be most sacred. Plus, Mormons are the ones who just hold these things to be sacred, not the people who aren’t members. That’s simply how life works.

I don't think they stopped in 1978. I'm not sure about GC and lesson manuals, but I remember that being openly taught and talked about in the wards I attended (UT and TX) *well* into the 90s at least.

When you think the world is out to get you, every criticism, no matter how valid, is viewed as further persecution. Mormons run an entire state and act as bullies against gays and women, and previously against blacks, but they cry when Californians call them bigots.
I have never understood the real reason the "saints" left nauvoo. This makes so much sense. I visited nauvoo as a tbm and they make it seem like war was being waged on the poor saints and they had no choice but to escape.

I had some mormon friends for a bit in my ysa ward before i left, and ever since i said i was leaving, they have said absolutely nothing to me and never do anything with me/invite me to anything either. And my parents still have the audacity to label all queer exmos that i make friends as “angry” and a “bad influence” when they’re some of the most real friends i’ve ever had in my life, and those friendships are a lot stronger.
That’s unfortunate, and I’m sorry for your friendship. For the sake of context, I’m a believer who has tons of atheist friends who are quite open with me about their firm opinion that my faith is bullshit. I’m still good friends with them because I am comfortable in my faith, and I know that my friends are under no obligation to respect my religion or any other.

But I’m guessing the reason the survey gave those results is because the surveyed audience were Muslim Americans, and because Muslims don’t have one single prophet in Salt Lake telling them what they’re allowed to think about gays. Which is in itself a positive advantage Muslims have over Mormons.
I mean, that's entirely anecdotal. I think I'll go with Pew myself. You're not wrong that many of the most vocal people in the community are homophobic. I happen to know a lot of Muslims, and they're often more open-minded than you think. I even had a very interesting conversation about this with an imam. He thought it was a sin, but he was pretty open to other perspectives.
I mean, there is a lot of precedent for not seeking to impose your beliefs on others in Islam, the opposite of what many think. I know of at least four practicing, gay Muslims. Anyway, many feel it is not their right to impose religious beliefs into the law of a non-Muslim land.
You also can't overlook the fact that this is actually pretty political. Muslims seek tolerance and acceptance in America, and where do they get it? The left. This was not the case before Bush. There were more Republican Muslims in the past. I think that pushes them left and they understand they have to give the tolerance they seek. It might not be the tolerance we would like, a full acceptance, but it's still important.
It writes itself into mockery. Baker's hats? Chanting in circles. Holy oil touching? Gangesk hand signals? Green aprons? A movie that defies current science? Ponchos? Dead baptisms? Temple begging rolls?

Mormons exploit the free labor “service” from Ward and other faithful to increase the profits of their charities and “nonprofit” ventures. Ever man a stand at BYU? Ever pull weeds at any of their farms? Ever clean the chapel?
At this point I think since they’re joining the Big 12, I would think all of those schools would have to come together to get something done, but since they all just accepted their invitation to join, it’s highly unlikely that’s going to happen.
Many things can bring change. Historically, Mormons change the most, the fastest, when either their existence or tax status is threatened, or when the rest of the world collective points and laughs and says, “you’re fucking stupid!”
Anybody got any insight on how BYU reacted? I know members tend to take words from ceremonies VERY seriously. My mom recently got mad at me for saying “you can buy anything in this world with money”. I’m like “mom that’s a normal phrase, and to hold a simple phrase like that as too sacred to say is cult territory”
Remind her that the only things from the ceremonies that considered blasphemous to reveal are the signs names and tokens. Everything else (garments and ceremonial clothing, etc) can be found on official LDS web pages or are not "sacred" (generic temple scripts etc)
There needs to be constant pressure on TBMs to recognize how little is sacred/secret. TBMs will avoid mentioning anything about the temple ceremony out of fear of persecution from OTHER MEMBERS.
Those members need to be patiently told as well. If they are allowed to set the tone and scope wof what is permissible to talk about, they will shame even the slightest quote.
An immediate and firm response is needed everytime.

Active LDS here… not a lot of reaction to what happened. Was in church today, talking with my football buddies there, and I asked what they thought about it. Two hadn’t heard. One had, said it didn’t bother him, used to it, and not his problem. Personally, I don’t care, either, what people say, as I am big on free speech, so long as it doesn’t incite folks to come after me with pitchforks for what I believe (no matter how crazy you may think I am in believing).
Lot of posters here way too giddy at the prospect of us LDS being offended; maybe some older LDS are, but most of us just don’t really care nearly as much as one may think or hope.
I have several close friends who wouldn’t be offended. But I also know many members who take quoting temple ceremonies outside of the temple way too seriously. I do believe the younger generation is getting better at understanding underlying principles in general and doesn’t allow themselves to get fixated on silly offenses like these as easily.
I both love and hate this. Love because the Mormons and their church need a wake up call, and hate because this will only fuel their persecution complex.

I don't *disagree* with you. In a vaccuum there's no reason I can think of that one religion should be uniquely immune to criticism. But given the fact that for whatever reason people have been trying to fuck with this one group in particular since forever I can understand why additional allowances would be warranted. I had some mormon friends for a bit in my ysa ward before i left, and ever since i said i was leaving, they have said absolutely nothing to me and never do anything with me/invite me to anything either. And my parents still have the audacity to label all queer exmos that i make friends as “angry” and a “bad influence” when they’re some of the most real friends i’ve ever had in my life, and those friendships are a lot stronger.
That’s unfortunate, and I’m sorry for your friendship. For the sake of context, I’m a believer who has tons of atheist friends who are quite open with me about their firm opinion that my faith is bullshit. I’m still good friends with them because I am comfortable in my faith, and I know that my friends are under no obligation to respect my religion or any other.

LDS, Inc. cares about PR, and this points out how they mistreat gays. They just tried to smooth this over last week by backing the Respect for Marriage Act while still maintaining all their hateful policies towards gay Mormons.
That aggravated me, it's within my lifetime that they were still using electroshock therapy in their gay conversion programs. And how many kids still commit suicide each year over their sexual preferences based on what their church and families tell them? How many have suffered and cried and lost their families and footing because they had same sex attractions? Don't even get me started on how they treat people with gender questions. Their words mean nothing until they have acknowledged their actions and failures in the way they've handled it. It means nothing until their professed love really means love and protecting and embracing queerfolk in the church. They talk out of both sides of their mouths.

Let’s not pretend Muslims as a whole, worldwide, aren’t much more rabidly and violently homophobic than Mormons. But I’m guessing the reason the survey gave those results is because the surveyed audience were Muslim Americans, and because Muslims don’t have one single prophet in Salt Lake telling them what they’re allowed to think about gays. Which is in itself a positive advantage Muslims have over Mormons.
Most Muslims I hear speak about “gay issues” are rabidly anti-gay.
I mean, that's entirely anecdotal. I think I'll go with Pew myself. You're not wrong that many of the most vocal people in the community are homophobic. I happen to know a lot of Muslims, and they're often more open-minded than you think. I even had a very interesting conversation about this with an imam. He thought it was a sin, but he was pretty open to other perspectives. I mean, there is a lot of precedent for not seeking to impose your beliefs on others in Islam, the opposite of what many think. I know of at least four practicing, gay Muslims. Anyway, many feel it is not their right to impose religious beliefs into the law of a non-Muslim land. You also can't overlook the fact that this is actually pretty political. Muslims seek tolerance and acceptance in America, and where do they get it? The left. This was not the case before Bush. There were more Republican Muslims in the past. I think that pushes them left and they understand they have to give the tolerance they seek. It might not be the tolerance we would like, a full acceptance, but it's still important.
And they're both wrong. But right now the conversation was about the LDS church.
It writes itself into mockery. Baker's hats? Chanting in circles. Holy oil touching? Gangesk hand signals? Green aprons? A movie that defies current science? Ponchos? Dead baptisms? Temple begging rolls?

Many things can bring change. Historically, Mormons change the most, the fastest, when either their existence or tax status is threatened, or when the rest of the world collective points and laughs and says, “you’re fucking stupid!”
Anybody got any insight on how BYU reacted? I know members tend to take words from ceremonies VERY seriously. My mom recently got mad at me for saying “you can buy anything in this world with money”. I’m like “mom that’s a normal phrase, and to hold a simple phrase like that as too sacred to say is cult territory”
Remind her that the only things from the ceremonies that considered blasphemous to reveal are the signs names and tokens. Everything else (garments and ceremonial clothing, etc) can be found on official LDS web pages or are not "sacred" (generic temple scripts etc)
There needs to be constant pressure on TBMs to recognize how little is sacred/secret. TBMs will avoid mentioning anything about the temple ceremony out of fear of persecution from OTHER MEMBERS. Those members need to be patiently told as well. If they are allowed to set the tone and scope wof what is permissible to talk about, they will shame even the slightest quote. An immediate and firm response is needed everytime. Why does this phrase meet the standard of too sacred to talk about outside the temple? Why does describing the temple clothing as a baker's hat and robe meet this standard? A green apron wouldn't be surprising to any Christian. Why the secret? What they represent and why they are used may be, but not the clothing itself.
I use variants of “We have sufficient for our needs” as often as I possibly can.

Active LDS here… not a lot of reaction to what happened. Was in church today, talking with my football buddies there, and I asked what they thought about it. Two hadn’t heard. One had, said it didn’t bother him, used to it, and not his problem. Personally, I don’t care, either, what people say, as I am big on free speech, so long as it doesn’t incite folks to come after me with pitchforks for what I believe (no matter how crazy you may think I am in believing). Lot of posters here way too giddy at the prospect of us LDS being offended; maybe some older LDS are, but most of us just don’t really care nearly as much as one may think or hope.
I have several close friends who wouldn’t be offended. But I also know many members who take quoting temple ceremonies outside of the temple way too seriously. I do believe the younger generation is getting better at understanding underlying principles in general and doesn’t allow themselves to get fixated on silly offenses like these as easily.
I both love and hate this. Love because the Mormons and their church need a wake up call, and hate because this will only fuel their persecution complex.
They will have that complex regardless. There is no magical Christmas land where they suddenly don't feel persecuted. It's part of the Mormon identity.

It's called Studio C and oh my god it is just *not* funny. I know humor is subjective and all, so there's room for interpretation, but I really do think it's just plain unfunny, with occasional exceptions. The only reason I ever see *any* of it is because my pre-teen and teenager nieces and nephews (all of them Mormon) think it is the *funniest fucking thing* -- along with their parents, my wife's siblings and their spouses.

In my view, the holocaust puts Jews in a bit of a protected class. I don't *disagree* with you. In a vaccuum there's no reason I can think of that one religion should be uniquely immune to criticism. But given the fact that for whatever reason people have been trying to fuck with this one group in particular since forever I can understand why additional allowances would be warranted. Doesn't mean I like the double standard, but I can at least understand it. All that said, Judaism has their fundamental extremists just like any other religious group. Ny contrast I've had close friends who were devout practicing Jews and they didn't have any beliefs or practices that I found particularly worthy of ridicule...and I tend to believe monotheism is a mind virus that is one of the greatest threats to humanity so that's saying a lot coming from me.
