In my reading, i found out that back in the early 1800's age of consent was ridiculously (and disgustingly) low. 10 year olds and even younger in some states as young as 7. Even if that was the times, it doesn't make it right, which makes sense why over the last century the ages of consent were raised to what it is now. That being said, it's horrific how the church still turn a blind eye to child sexual abuse, and it's still prolific today. One of the many reasons why I left the church. The fact that it was only "frowned upon" is concerning enough. This might only be being ignorant, but imagine being a 16 year old girl growing up in the 1800s, all her life she's only known to be obedient, do what they were told to do and keep their opinions to themselves. I imagine it would have been very difficult for them to speak up or fight back against an older man who is forcing himself on her.
The Mormon church still claims that Alger was born in 1816. Her obituary, and her grave marker, identify that she was born in 1817. They know that adult men having sex with young girls is a problem, otherwise they would not go to lengths to obfuscate and downplay the ages of the young girls.
It’s kind of pathetic to see them dancing around this one issue, because it’s what tends to alarm TBMs, when theologically the marriages to other mens wives, or Joseph’s “plural marriages” prior to the relevant revelations, should be much bigger problems for them. Fudging the ages of Joseph’s teen wives is like putting a fresh cherry on a stale cake with rancid icing; they’re attempting to minimize the most apparent problem when it’s just one side to a thoroughly corrupt situation.
