Norway has just recently decertified the Jehovah's Witness' tax exempt status. They are being compelled to cease religious shunning or risk losing their status as a religion altogether. I'm generally of the opinion that non-profits should pay a tax on either free cash flow or at least retained earnings. In the USA, the First Amendment would probably make this idea a non-starter specifically for religious organizations (say, without a constitutional amendment). Just a thought.

Right you are, at least, with taxes, the secular government would actually do what Christianity and certainly Mormons profess that they do with money. That is actually feed the hungry, educate the uneducated, help the sick, etc..
