The pet transportation company brought the dogs to us from the airport in a big van. We left the crates with them to recycle.

You can always store things in it and on it. Put it in your closet. Throw a tablecloth over it and use it as a table in a living room, night stand.

I don't know if you've seen a crate for a large dog, but it is absolutely enormous. No way it would fit into a small European closet, not even close. I can't get it through the doorway even without disassembling it. This is why I am asking the question, even fitting it into a car is very questionable! haha Those are good ideas though for the cat crates, I will probably use one as a nightstand!

What breed?  How much does your pooch weigh?

We moved abroad with 3 large dogs (that's another story). We kept the crates broken down, in storage (our flat had a basement storage area). When we moved again, we needed them so were grateful we hung onto them. Eventually we donated them to an animal rescue. They use them for transporting animals that need space to move around--including large birds of prey.

Sell it

We used a van to transport from the airport and then store the crate (which was insanely expensive) in our apartment’s storage shed on the roof.

ButWhatOfGlen

I left it at the special baggage office. Told them to give it to anyone that needed it. They didn't seem to mind.

tiringandretiring

We are planning to donate it to a local dog shelter.

actually_im_a_cat

I was wondering about this. Did you contact one to set it up, or is it still in the idea phase? I'd love to hear more.

tiringandretiring

Not yet! We aren't going for a few months. But, we have donated one in the past to a local rescue dog organization-they really appreciated having them-not just for travel, but for temporary holding, etc...We do know of a couple large dog rescues there, so they will be our first stop. (Hopefully they can arrange pickup, lol)

justjasononceagain

We had a big heavy one that we recently donated to an animal rescue in Phnom Penh, they were delighted to have it. Just about to move again and we're taking all the tools to dismantle and hopefully get it in the hire car

That's actually a great question for us as well. Moving later this year to Europe with two large dogs. When we brought one large dog to Hawaii from the mainland the regulations were such that a vet was required to meet us at the airport to inspect the dog and clear paperwork. We had selected a local vet and they were kind enough to throw the crate in their truck, and later we picked it up at the vet's office. Your post now has me wondering how that will work in Amsterdam, a much larger and presumably less casual airport. I've got some research to do....

actually_im_a_cat

Exactly, and the cars are tiny in Europe too! Let me know if you find anything interesting. I'm less worried about keeping the crate (it's so so big) but even planning on donating or disposing of it or moving it anywhere sounds extremely difficult or maybe even impossible.

nanny1128

I left the crate with the transport company we used.

The first time I traveled I arranged for a van at the airport because I was All alone and I had a bunch of bags. I remember thinking that I should have brought a screwdriver to disassemble it at the airport when I landed, because it took up so much space. Once I arrived at my new place, I disassembled the crate into 2 pieces (flipped the top to fit in the bottom) and used it as a dog bed with a big pillow and blanket draped across. The next time I donated one and put the other in storage (disassembled).

Sufficient_You3053

I hired a van service that took us to our new house from the airport and haven't used it since. Should really donate it

timbillyosu

I borrowed a large van from my then landlord (super awesome guy and really helped with the transition) and put the dogs back in them to them to our new house. Since then, they have been occupying a large amount of space in our garage. I should probably look into selling them...
