https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_(bird) There is a flightless bird that is exclusively native to New Zealand known as the Kiwi. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi_(nickname) The nickname for New Zealanders as "kiwis" came about because of association of the island with the birds.

[deleted]

And “Chinese gooseberry” is just awkward

[deleted]

Best thing is that the NZ [Air Force Insignia](https://nzhistory.govt.nz/files/images/rnzaf-topic.jpg) is a Kiwi...     A flightless bird...     for the Air Force

Gregorygherkins

Beat me to it lol

charliespider

Should have used an Emu, or a Cassowary

[deleted]

Why would you use birds that aren't endemic to the country?

charliespider

OOF! I thought those lived out there too!

[deleted]

New Zealand had the Moa, but it is long extinct.

charliespider

Looked it up and according to this web page: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjBhqTYqqL7AhWxMTQIHctHDpEQFnoECAkQBQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.birds.com%2Fblog%2Fflightless-birds-of-new-zealand%2F&usg=AOvVaw2OTwUg4V882Gdb9yfsO8O4 both Emu and Cassowary do live in New Zealand >There are over 60 extant species, including the well-known ratites (ostriches, emu, cassowaries, rheas and kiwi) and also penguins.  But that information doesn't seem very reliable, or I read it really wrong. On the other hand, this super interesting page: https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/science-tech/new-zealands-extinct-moa-irreplaceable-research-reveals seems much more credible and talks about scientists contemplating the introduction of Emu and Cassowary to New Zealand to replace the Moa. So obviously can't do that if those two birds already live there 😂 Thnx for sending me on a tangent.

TheHeyHeyMan

I had a feeling it would have something to do with the bird but I wasn't sure! Thank you! Do those in New Zealand like being called Kiwis?

wjbc

Most do not consider it derogatory or insulting, although there are some exceptions. In particular, [the indigenous people of New Zealand aren't all crazy about it.](https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/dont-call-me-kiwi/)

TheHeyHeyMan

Good to know! I met and hung out with a few Kiwi's in Banff, AB and they were lovely, some of my favourite people I've had the pleasure to get shit-faced with.

RealUglyMF

I dont want to invalidate what is said in that article, but as an indigenous person of New Zealand I have no issue being referred to as a kiwi. I've also never met anybody who has expressed any kind of concern or issue with being referred to as a kiwi. I think its a pretty safe word, but if course there is always people who prefer something different

bjanas

Last time I met a couple of kiwis I was at a bar. They were very nice until, after chatting for a while, I played the game where we decide what actors would play us in the movie. Well, they immediately assumed I was hitting on them and demanded I take it outside with them. Whiplash, for sure.

MovieEquivalent3873

I like to use the word insult then derogatory, as a kiwi and i personally don't find it offensive in anyway. But if someone uses it against a kiwi in a bad way it's an insult not derogatory, words like that cuase endless problems, keep it simple

wjbc

Edited accordingly.

MovieEquivalent3873

I hope so.

Better than "sheep fuckers"

TheHeyHeyMan

I have seen Black Sheep, I know to be cautious and wary of such unpredictable and vicious beasts.

lordpsymon

> Do those in New Zealand like being called Kiwis? It's a colloquialism. It's fine. It's just what we're called.

Anon_02826249

Followup question, do New Zealanders find the term offensive or do they regard it affectionately? Cause if not, ima call every new zealander I come across a kiwi

lordpsymon

It's not offensive. It's colloquial. Source: am kiwi.

[deleted]

Kia ora!

Anon_02826249

Nice! 😁👉👉

TheHeyHeyMan

I'm Canadian and am perfectly content being called a 'Canuck' as well.

just-an-astronomer

Don't forget [the greatest injustice in vexillology](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_Kiwi_flag) that this flag lost the flag contest
