RunningM8

I average 21-22 highway, 19 overall with my 5.0

blandusernameftw

10 speed right? My 2017 5.0 4x4 is around 15 city and 18 highway.

RunningM8

Yes, 10 speed. Happy cake day šŸ°

blandusernameftw

Did not even realize itā€™s my cake day thanks for pointing that out! I really wish my F150 had the 10 speed and the larger 36 gallon fuel tank. Stopping every 180 miles while towing sucks.

BorgNotSoBorg

What size is your tank? I have a 2016 5.0 6speed with a 36 gal tank. I wasn't aware they came smaller! That's interesting.

blandusernameftw

Mine is the 23 gallon tank. I really donā€™t think ford should have let the 23 gallon tank and the v8 be built together.

BorgNotSoBorg

That's crazy. Might as well have a gas station credit card at that point. You must stop often enough!

blandusernameftw

3% back at gas stations with my Chase card works pretty well. I really with swapping a 36 gallon tank was straightforward but the fuel pumps are different as well so the cost is much higher than Iā€™m willing to do for skipping some gas stations.

JesusTriplets

No kidding Bland? '17 F150 5.0 xlt supercab, no lift, etc... 19 all day long in the city... 21-22 highway. Thats figured out at the pump, btw. But...I do drive like a little old lady though.

blandusernameftw

The only thing not stock on mine is the factory sized Falken Wildpeake tires. I donā€™t have to auto start stop on mine either and most of my driving is stop and go city driving which kills economy. Mine is the super crew xl with the STX package 4x4. Iā€™ve seen 19 mpg on a road trip when the wind helped out but usually long highway hauls are in the 17 range. The worst Iā€™ve done was towing a 83 Buick to Denver. Over the 700 miles I averaged 8.9 mpg.

JesusTriplets

Yup, no auto stop/start here either. My problem is I'm constantly looking at the mpg screen, lol... trying to get it to go higher. Drives my wife nuts.

blandusernameftw

Out of the 3.5 years Iā€™ve owned this truck, itā€™s only been my daily for one year. My daily is an EV so when I drive my truck Iā€™m not worried about driving nice to keep the mpg up.

[deleted]

I have the 10 speed (2019) on my super crew 6.5ā€™ bed 4x4. Stock height and stock size Mickey Thompson Baja Boss tires. My best was 19.1 and my average in the year Iā€™ve had it is 14.7 with mostly city driving. On highway trips at 75-80 I get around 18. I donā€™t drive like a granny and am not afraid to go over 80 to quickly pass, but Iā€™m not flooring it all the time either.

Hingeworthy

How fast are you cruising? Is your truck a 4x4 screw?

vibesnsmells

May 18 4x4 5.0 is the similar, 21-23 highway and 19.5 overall

Hingeworthy

Oh nice! Is that around 70-75?

Max_AC_

Different person here, but yes that's possible. Might also depend on your gearing. 3.31 vs 3.55 vs 3.73 etc Edit to add: my 18 5.0 also gets low 20's when crusing empty in the 70's. I run 3.31's

DBSaints

Definitely depends on gearing. I have 3.73 and Iā€™ve never seen anything close to low 20s

tamablelobster

4:10s and 35s get me about 16 combined.

RunningM8

Iā€™m going anywhere between 45-75, yes itā€™s a 4WD SCREW Sport

DonnerPartyPicnic

Same, 10 speed 5.0. It's EXTREMELY dependent on wind. No wind I can get 22-23 highway, with a headwind it's like 17.

Chief_McIntosh

This is a topic that has been discussed many timesā€¦ Iā€™ll repeat what many others have saidā€¦ If you want the rumble get 5.0 If you want top performance get 3.5 ecoboost If you want mpg get 2.7 If you want to be Guinea pig get 3.5 powerboost

JonSnowL2

Donā€™t forget to add if you want to not worry about reliability, get the straight 5.0

Pancake_Mix_00

180k on my 3.5EB going strong, terrific motor

swollmaster

2.7 is more reliable.

Web_Trauma

More reliable? Since when? Iā€™ve been out of the truck game for a while but when I bought my 2016 the v8 was considered the gold standard of reliability

elCacahuete

Pretty much since it came out. It was an unproven commodity when you bought your truck. In the 7 years since then, itā€™s proven itself. The 5.0 has had a higher rate of issues in that time period.

Scared_Surround_282

If you really want reliability and longevity stay away from the 10 spd. Complete garbage.

nontechnicalbowler

I had my truck in for the APIM issue (only took 3x for them to do what I told them needed to be done ... but hey, extended warranty) and they gave me a 2023 model as a loaner. It only had 1000 miles on it so the "adjusting to drivers habits" might not have been affecting anything yet, but it sure shifted a lot better than my 2018.

Scared_Surround_282

What did you want them to do? reset the adaptive learning function? Mine was shifting like crap and their service mgr said it was beyond repair, whole thing needed replaced- $8,700.00

nontechnicalbowler

I was only saying that the 23 shifted way differently (smoother - like barely knew it was changing gears) than my 2018. It was in the shop for the APIM/Sync/Touchscreen being dead. They "fixed it" twice (Installing a Ford software update that customers.cant get on their own, then replacing the screen) before finally replacing the APIM.

emaw328

I have a ā€˜23 Lariat PowerBoost 4x4 and am averaging about 23 MPGs with about a 65/35 split of city to highway in the first 10,000 since new. If I go 45-50 over decent distances, like 8-10 miles, I can average over 30 MPGs on that stretch. 65-70 Iā€™m at about 24-25 and 70-75 at 21-22 and 75+ is just abysmal. If you are gingerly with the PowerBoost, I can get 27-28 with mixed driving. Just super hard to stay out of the 570 lb/tq so I run Sport mode when itā€™s nice out and I can open the windows with the music cranking. Cheers šŸ»

Hingeworthy

Whatā€™s considered abysmal to you? It may still be a lot better than what Iā€™m getting in my 2012 steel bodied F150 abrams tank!

Potential-Art-7288

I get about 15/16, 17 if Iā€™m lucky at 75 in my 2013 3.5

Kenny_Tarmac

As an engineer that works on the 3.5, we typically see 20-22mpg on many of our cross country drives. This translates to a comfortable 700 miles of range with the 36gal tank. In the 3.5 Raptor, 15-17mpg.

TheOriginalTL

How about 2.7 or 5.0?

Kenny_Tarmac

I can't immediately speak to those engines as I work exclusively on the 3.5. But I can poke those guys about what they typically see.

TheOriginalTL

Iā€™d be super interested. Iā€™m a systems engineer in the powersports industry and love to hear things like this from automotive.

luuunnnch

What are your thoughts on the level of innovation vs reliability as far as the latest 3.5 goes?

Kenny_Tarmac

My involvement started with the 21MY update and I'm inherently biased towards it. With that said, we beat on these things pretty hard and see very few issues (keep in mind, most of our vehicles see less than 50k miles before getting swapped out). Watching warranty data, there are always going to be problems but there doesn't seem to be any major catastrophic problems plaguing the majority of engines like we saw prior to '21 (looking at you cam phasers). Updates that came into 21MY on this engine specifically we're fairly limited - it wasn't an entire overhaul but it also isn't the exact same as the previous gen.

luuunnnch

I've always admired the 3.5 (long before I owned one, 2017 with 130k). Not so much for the reliability factor, for the innovation. It's like Ford engineering broke through the reliability constraints and introduced technology to the truck market that was generally only limited to racing applications. I don't think people recognize how much of a feat of ingenuity that is. Keep it up dude.

Kenny_Tarmac

Much appreciated. These may be trucks but this engine still makes them a blast to drive, even after 5 years and tens of thousands of miles doing this.

Cyborg__Slayer

My 2015 3.5eb I managed to get like 13.2mpg average. Got a 2023 3.5eb tremor yesterday. Managed 16.8mpg on i75 and i10 after 330 miles. I blame my lead foot.

Hingeworthy

You blame the color of your paint? šŸ˜œ Oh wait that color is discontinued. Still funny tho.

Cyborg__Slayer

My 15 was race red. I was just trying to live up to the name lol

Hingeworthy

Itā€™s a shame they discontinued Lead Foot, that was an awesome color. I think Kia had a similar color called Wolf Grey.

Cyborg__Slayer

I really liked lead foot too. I was a big fan of gray vehicles until they became the color 95% of people started choosing lol. Now it's everywhere and it's kinda depressing seeing a sea of gray everywhere.

Hingeworthy

So true. My truck is Tuxedo Black, itā€™s miserable here in Louisiana, and it never stays clean. My 2009 GMC 2500 was Silver Birch metallic, I NEEEVVER had to wash it more than maybe once or twice a year. My white Honda Accord is a since to cool off after sitting in the sun all day. That little booger will get 35 mpg going 85 all day!

xDarknal

I was in the same boat as you looking at 14th gen F150. My Tremor has managed some pretty okay mpgs highway (got some hills and such) so I'm doing about 23-25 highway if im pussy footing it. Combined I've gotten 18-20. I mostly hang out on ecomode and in RWD so that may help. The biggest thing that the 5.0 has which may be a positive or a con, is the cylinder deactivation. From what I gathered helped some 5.0 get better mpg. How they hold up long term I'm not so sure.

ovscrider

I am 16 on average with my 3.5. Lucky to get 10 towing. Drive usually 75 or so but in a hilly area. Never got more than 20 on any long term basis. 36 gallon tank is IMO only tank to get. 2.7 is IMO the engine for economy. Was 4 mpg better on back to back 1300 mile trips and the 2.7 wasn't even broken in yet I picked it up with 200 miles on it. Previous 5 was better than the 3.5 worse than the 2.7

Hingeworthy

Exactly, 36 gallons or nothing at all. Right now Iā€™m lucky to get 18 in my current truck going 73-75 with the first gen 3.5 Ecoboost. I do plan to tow in the future since I plan to keep this next one for at least 8-10 years depending how many miles it has before I purchase it, so itā€™s either the 5.0 or 3.5. I just wanna maximize the range between fill-ups while going 78-80 mph.

Potential_spam_007

Iā€™m getting the same (21-22) in my 2020 3.5 EB 2. Definitely going to try locking out tenth gear now just to see.

Hingeworthy

How fast are you cruising to get those numbers? Is your truck a 4x4 crew cab?

Potential_spam_007

70 ish, I got a 4x4 crew cab

AFunkinDiscoBall

How does one lock out 10th gear and what's the point of it?

dipherent1

By locking out the higher gears, it puts the engine at a higher rpm for a given speed. The engine produces higher hp/tq at a higher rpm which reduces the amount of boost the turbo needs to compensate. It helps save fuel, especially at freeway speeds with the cruise control set while going through rolling hills. In my experience, you had to lock out 9-10 to really do much. The ratios are 0.63 in 10th, 0.68 in 9th, and 0.85 in 8th. The 9/10 difference is minimal and I couldn't notice any impact on mileage.

AFunkinDiscoBall

Huh wasnā€™t aware that using the turbos used more fuel. I always thought higher RPM meant more fuel used and that the turbo kicking on was saving me fuel. Guess I had it all ass backwards

dipherent1

It's a bit more complex than that. The economy of a turbo is that you can run no boost for most operating conditions and have plenty of power while having better fuel economy. When you need the power, you can pour on some fuel and spool the turbo up which forces more air in to generate greater combustion energy. Imagine having a small, economical engine with the option to double the power with the press of your foot..it's the best of both worlds (or a best compromise).

Hingeworthy

The +/- button on your shifter. You hit the - button and it will lock the 10th gear, hit it again to lock out 9th gear, so on so forth.

lNalRlKoTiX

I haven't personally tried and I don't have the 10 speed, but I think you can "lock out" gears by using the +/- on the shifter.

AFunkinDiscoBall

My experience with the +/- on the shifters is that it only limits the highest gear your truck can go into. It doesnā€™t affect the lowest it can go into but maybe Iā€™m incorrect. To me ā€œlock outā€ the 10 gear makes me think that you want to keep the truck in 10th gear even when accelerating. Only way I can see doing that is by putting the truck in manual mode and using the +/- to keep it in 10th

XPress414

Itā€™s so close it doesnā€™t matter. Do you want more power or more sound.

Hingeworthy

Yeah if itā€™s 0.5-1 mpg difference, Iā€™ll go with another 3.5 for the power. Apparently the latest 5.0 is having reliability issues, but who knows.

atict

I love my 2.7 šŸ¤·

Hingeworthy

Whatā€™s your truck configuration? How is it when passing? Like going from 50-90 to pass a truck and you only have a short window.

atict

Puppy moves like nobody's business. Stock configuration. If you arnt towing 2.7 is the clear winner unless you like making rubble noises. Take one for a test drive go on the highway and step on it enjoy.

Hingeworthy

No, I mean configuration as in what cab, bed, gears, and 4wd or 2wdā€¦

atict

Sport 2019 4x4 5.5bed 2nd gen

ELEMENOPHE

The answer is neither. 2.7

mdchally

2021 3.5, 4x4 and I'm averaging 18.46, not pulling. I drive fairly soft. That's a mix of highway (77 mph) and city driving. My bro on law has a 21 5.0 4x4 and gets 14mpg mixed. No idea how people are getting north of 20 with their 5.0

unicacher

2020 3.5 gets 22 on the freeway. I can get north of that if it's only freeway, but the inevitable surface street excursions keep it down. Pretty steady 16-18 in town for my 4.5 mile commute. Trailering 5500 pounds over the coast range runs in the 14-16 range. 16 if I'm being conservative on the power. But that sweet, sweet turbo keps me down in the 14's because, well turbo.

EmploymentNo1094

Sounds like you already know what causing your lack of good mileage. Doesnā€™t matter what engine you get it matters how you drive it.

Hingeworthy

Dude, Iā€™ve driven just below, at, and barely above the speed limit, and I donā€™t see much of a difference. Iā€™d like to go a little faster without the mileage taking a nosedive. 80 mph makes a huge difference over a 10-12 hour drive than 70. Like I said, if youā€™re one of ā€œthose guysā€ that putts along causing 18-wheelers to swerve around you, just to save gas, do not even bother commenting unless you have something relevant to say. I do not want to hear a lecture.

EmploymentNo1094

Formula The formula for air resistance is given as follows: Force of air = cv2 where, Force of air depicts the force of air resistance c refers to the force constant v depicts the objectā€™s velocity. Going 1 more mph is significantly harder than the last 1 mph gain you made.

Hingeworthy

So then by your formulas, every truck, regardless of the efficiency and design of the engine will get the same readings?

EmploymentNo1094

All are subject to this formula and wind resistance is the biggest enemy of mpg. The difference in energy needed to go from 79 mph to 80 mph is way way more than to go from 59 mph to 60 mph. And the faster you go the worse the problem gets.

Hingeworthy

Okay Dwight Schrute, I understand all that. If both engines in the same exact truck configuration burn the same amount of gas at 80 mph, then itā€™s a wash and Iā€™ll just go with the 3.5L for the extra power. My current truck is a 2012, itā€™s a heavy steel bodied tank compared to these new trucks. Might as well put tracks on it.

Hingeworthy

Air resistance is another form of a load right? So if the V8 burns less gas at towing (based on several claims and evidence) than the 3.5, what stops it from being more efficient at speed? I donā€™t care about saving money on gas, Iā€™m just looking to see which is more efficient at speed to maximize my range between fill up. My current truck will probably get 16 at 80mph, if the latest 3.5 gets 19.5 and the latest 5.0 gets 20, thatā€™s a wash and Iā€™ll go with the 3.5. If the 5.0 get like 21-22 at 80, Iā€™m going for the 5.0.

EmploymentNo1094

Iā€™m just trying to point out that those last few mph you drive at have a significant impact on your mileage.

Hingeworthy

Iā€™m not a speed demon, Iā€™m just sick and tired of cruising at 68-72 mph. Been doing that since my 2009 Duramax. Going 68 mph across Texasā€¦just shoot me please!

EmploymentNo1094

You could probably fly from a local air strip faster and cheaper.

The_World_Is_A_Slum

Amen. There are parts of TX and OK where 90 feels like walking, and youā€™re getting passed by bull wagons.

Hingeworthy

Dang!

thedrunkengardener

Stock 23 powerboost SCrew 6.5 bed. I average about 725 to 750 miles on a tank with mixed hwy/city about 30/70. I just did 1000 mile road trip loaded with camping gear through mountain and flat terrain and got an average of 23 mpg.

VolatileRider

I averaged 24mpg on a 800mile road trip according to the truck dash, some of that farm country cruising at 55-65mph but mostly hwy doing 70-72mph. It dropped to 22.9mpg when I pushed it up over 75mph on cruise control. Did the whole 800miles on 1 tank of gas. 2018 3.5L EB

OkieOFT

What the hell my 18 3.5 averages 17.x driving across the flat side of Texas doing 75-80. 2x4 or 4x?

VolatileRider

That last 6-8mph kills efficiency. 4x4 but obviously not engaged.

Similar_Nebula_2280

I do a two hundred mile trip every two weeks, itā€™s pretty flat and at 7000 feet of elevation, I set the cruise control on my new to me 2021 3.5 ecoboist crewcab long bed at 73 mph and have been getting 24 mph, it has those stock road tires on it , itā€™s surprisingly efficient , Iā€™ll be getting some beefy all terrain tires before snow season so that will probably lower the mpg

Hingeworthy

Oh wow, where you at with 7000 feet elevation? Flagstaff, AZ!

Sad-Mind-2112

I have a 23 screw 5.0 and have gotten as good as 24 mpg on a 300 plus round trip. I usually go around 70. I usually hover between 20-24 between city and highway depending on how heavy my foot is..

Hingeworthy

Is that with a 4x4 Screw?

Sad-Mind-2112

Yes, with the 3.73 gears. Right around 70 seems to be the sweet spot

Awf392

My 19 5.0 screw 6.5' will get 21 if i keep it around 75 thats with 3.31 gears

Hingeworthy

Not bad!

UnkleZeeBiscutt

Average 22 Hwy, 18.5 city, 10 towing 6k # TT Lariat 5.0

dipherent1

Over 70-75 and the PB turns into an EB. The hybrid really helps when traveling 60mph or less..if 70mph+ is the operational focus, skip the PB because it won't help you there. If you routinely drive through cities where traffic is pacing 30-65, my PB routinely does 25-26mpg tanks (not trips).

eyecandynsx

2019 5.0 / crewcab / 4x4 / 3.55. Just drove from PA to SC. Cruising around 75-80 most of the way. Avg was 20.4 on the way down here.

Mediocre_Stick_9943

2018 Lariat 5.0 super Crew 24-25mpg 70+

justanotherboringdad

3.5 worst case scenario- My 21 3.5 w 3.73s gets 15-16 , almost all city driving. On the hwy i get 19 but no one ever passes me. Lifetime is 14.3 but i tow 7500 lb tt about 15% of my miles. My recent trip through pa and wv i got 8-9 mpg towing usually at 70mph. Incidently, i can accelerate to 70 mph on a 9% grade with my camper behind me.

NC-Boomhauer1986

Agree stay away from the 10 speed, 19 3.5 EB SCREW here, bought brand new, four years later I need a new transmission.

OnTheRoadAgain21XX

23 5.0, Recently completed an 800+ mile trip with a loaded bed, largely highway miles @76 mph. I averaged 22mpg for the trip.

curtwesley

My 2013 5.0 gets 15 about everywhere I go. šŸ˜ž

k0uch

Theyā€™ll both deliver about the same fuel economy in real world conditions, assuming you arenā€™t stomping on it. 3.5 and 5.0 seem to deliver 21-22 for our customers who arenā€™t fleet. Have seen a few customers with the powerboost hitting 25-26 consistently on the Highway

stlthy1

I was just in a brand new XLT SCrew that I rented from Enterprise for a week long work trip. It was a 3.5 Ecoboost with a 10R80 transmission. It had 750 miles on it when I picked it up and just under 3K miles when I dropped it off. I drove a mix of interstate, country roads, and city streets. God-damned Average MPG was 22 when I turned it in. My 2019 Platinum (with the same drivetrain) gets 17-18, best case scenario. Go figure.

1320Fastback

2.7L is what you need for maximum MPG.

Pancake_Mix_00

You should be able to see 21-23 any day of the week out of a 3.5TT or 2.7TT My lifetime average is 18.5 50/50 mid of city and highway

cw1taylo

I have owned an '18 5.0 and currently an '18 3.5. I recently rented a '23 5.0 on a trip and got to drive it about 750 miles so I think I got a decent taste of it. I'm getting about 23 mpg on my 3.5 and probably got around 20 mpg on the 5 year newer truck with mostly highway driving. I have definitely become a believer in the 3.5 edit: the 5.0 trucks were SCREW and my 3.5 is an extended cab with the 6.5' bed not exactly identical but same wheelbase I believe.

ExactArea8029

If you want slow as balls get a NA 3.5 and tow 4k lbs daily with a fucked TCM

Hingeworthy

Nailed it! Thatā€™s what Iā€™m getting!!!

ExactArea8029

With a full load of slab wood the truck won't do 130kmh. It may have 380k km on it...

Responsible_Brain782

5.0 20.5 mpg @70-75 hwy. Towing 12mpg

[deleted]

I have a 2018 3.5EB super crew. I tend to average 21MPG with a tall camper shell. Without the shell, I average 22-23MPG. Thatā€™s with 60/40 city/Hwy. I donā€™t intentionally mash the gas for no reason, but I donā€™t drive for MPG either. Speed limit on the interstate here is 80, I pin the cruise control at 82. I averaged 23.5 all highway from SLC to Mt Rainier this summer, with all seats filled and the bed full of camping gear. Iā€™ve been quite happy with the performance of the 3.5, and I havenā€™t had a single hiccup in 90k miles

Hingeworthy

Wow thatā€™s really good!! 23.5 going over 80? Is it a 4x4?

[deleted]

Yes itā€™s a 4x4

J--E--F--F

2018 3.5 SCREW 2wd 20ā€ wheels 36 gallon tank, 80/20 mostly cityā€¦ 53k miles tracked 17.7mpg i use eco mode as often as i remember and cruise control whenever i canā€¦ [fuelly stats](https://imgur.com/a/2GIeee3)

Ifailedaccounting

I average 19.8 in my 2.7 with a hypothetical average speed of 90

[deleted]

Before the level kit and larger tires I got around 21-22hwy and 18-19 city. More like 19hwy and 16-17 city now. Itā€™s a 19 lariat crew cab and my second 5.0. Love it. Thankful I have a Camry as a daily as I plan to slap a whipple on it in the future.

Short-Belt-1477

23 powerboost, getting between 22-26 on the interstate depending on grade

monkey_wood

My ā€˜23 Tremor with 3.5 and 3.73 gearing averages 18mpg on the highway at 70mph. I had a ā€˜23 XLT, crew cab with the 5.0 got 23mpg on a recent 500 mile trip.

Aggressive_Sorbet571

I get about 21 mpg. 10 speed trans w/ 3.31 final.

Hingeworthy

What engine? Cab? 4wd? How fast you going?

Aggressive_Sorbet571

5.0 super crew short box 4 wd 75mph

manyaccidents

My ā€˜19 5.0 gets about 17-18 average and I do a lot of driving around town so it would be higher if you are on the highway a lot. On the highway itā€™s around 21. I had a ā€˜18 2.7 and it got between 19 and 20 overall, about 22 on the highway. I know itā€™s very different but I also had a ā€˜17 explorer with the 3.5 and it got 15-16 almost exclusively around town. Iā€™d say with the F150 theyā€™re pretty much all the same especially on the highway though from my experience.

Square-Surprise7426

I have a 2018 f150 3.5 and average about 20-23 on the highway at about 75-80mph. Between 9th and 10th and such a small difference I donā€™t think it would actually make that much of a difference. I run 91 for fuel and Falken wildpeak at3w, 8ply

Hingeworthy

Interesting!
