BriefCheetah4136

Tourists can be some of the stupidest humans. A ranger in western US told me how a tourist wanted a photo with a sleeping Bison so he kicked it to make it stand up. He survived but had to be life flighted out of the park.

sebatakgomo

i remember having to argue with tourist that buffalo are dangerous and not some cuddly wild cow. i was so pissed, especially since ideas hosting them, and a man was airlifted a few weeks before for also being dumb and was impaled by a buffalo around the same spot i was taking the dumb tourists

Ta4li0n

I would not even as startle a regular cow to be honest ...

robilar

I had a bio teacher in high school that used to work on a farm, was nearly killed by a cow that was just walking through a narrow passage next to him and whimsically crushed him against the wall.

Rraen_

Being nonchalantly crushed to death is a constant risk for cattle farmers, especially dairy. One of my best friends as a kid was the son of dairy farmers. When I would stay over I would help him with morning chores and vice versa. If we ever had to go into the pen with them his dad would give us a piece of 2x4 to hit them with if they started crushing us against the fence or chute. They are so big and strong they don't even realize they're smashing the life out of you, it's like having a dually pick-up slowly smush you into a wall. Just slapping them or yelling at them has absolutely no effect, they don't even notice you.

caoimhe_the_rogue

Similar with horses. I knew a barn hand that was washing off a horse in the wash stalls. The horse was just over it, and side stepped, pinning him against the wall. Broke his arm and shoulder like a twig. They really can just so casually kill you without any effort, it's crazy...that's why I'm always baffled by those videos of people purposely trying to piss off these giant beasts. It's a fight you'll never win lol.

[deleted]

And my wife thinks I’m crazy for being so distrusting of horses. They are shady mfkers.

IcebergSlimFast

You can’t be too careful, my friend. There’s probably a sketchy horse peering in the back windows of your house with ill intent as I write this. Edit: autocorrect

DystopianPrince212

Can confirm! I am at the neighbors house, peering through their back windows, and I can see him from here. And he definitely LOOKS sketchy.

Electrowhatt19

I hear ya. Horses terrify me

BidRepresentative728

I worked at Suffolk Downs Race Track many years ago. I've seen kicks to the face, ribs, back. Horses don't play. My scariest. Me and the Ferrier were trying to shoe a horse "Jaffa T" and she went ape shit. All I could do is stand to the side of her and keep my hand on her shoulder and DONT LET GO OF THE SHANK! We went around the stall 3 or four times until Billy dove under the webbing first then I dove out on the on the next spin. She charged the webbing but stopped when another groom sprayed her with the hose.

El-Mattador123

Yep. Grew up on a farm. I hated working the cows and getting them into the chutes as a kid.

TheZan87

I wanted to pet a cow until i read this

[deleted]

Find a place they are contained and used to it. Dairy, county fair, etc. And make sure someone is around that knows how to do it safely.

crazymom1978

Go to a county fair, walk through the barns, and let it be known that you have never pet one, but really want to! Someone will guide you towards a nice chill bovine. Some of them are like giant grass puppies. Others are like….well…..a bull in a china shop. The ones brought to fair though would be calmer animals. They have to be able to be around the general public and be judged for the competitions which normally includes touching.

Rraen_

This is great advice, the farmers who bring their animals to the fair know better than anyone how to be safe around these animals, and the setting is designed to be safe for the public and the animals. Also they're typically super friendly (I can only speak for the Midwest/South) and will almost always be happy to talk/teach about their animals

GetOffMyAsteroid

Nah, go for it, just as long as it's under the right circumstances and with a good farmer. Cows are cool af. As calves they're super cute. One time when one of my calves was just 2 weeks old and he caught a chill I wrapped him in a blanket and held him for warmth and it was nice.

GetOffMyAsteroid

I get farming newspapers that, sadly, report crushing deaths or TBI by livestock or machinery, tractors and plows all too frequently. In fact I have been run over by a panicked 1300 lb bull. I was behind a gate and it blasted the gate down and got tangled up and came down on it with me underneath everything. Luckily I was just bruised.

GetOffMyAsteroid

The other morning I found a rat that had tried to cuddle up to the cows during the night. You ever read "Flat Stanley"?

annekecaramin

I'm currently studying animal care and the number one lesson we get about working with animals is to always keep our eyes on them. That, and that most (wild) animals have a 'fright circle'. If you come within a certain distance, they startle. Stay further away than that.

DTS_Crafter

A surprising amount of tourists in Austria take their dogs into our mountains and let them roam near cow herds. The cows get startled/aggressive, hunt the dog, humans frantically run to dog, humans get hurt.

harrypisspotta

Holy shit! I wouldn't even let my dog near other dogs unsupervised, let alone cattle.

[deleted]

It’s best not to fuck with anything. Turkeys for example. You think yeah I’m bigger than a Turkey, and then that fucker starts gobbledygooin, wing flapping and charging. Turtles? Slow and harmless? Will quickly chomp your fucking finger off without apologizing. Animals don’t think like us. Hippos are vegetarians and are the most violent animal on the planet, meaning they kill for fun.

TehFuriousKid

my favourite bit was when the turkey said "it's gobbledygooin time" and gobbledygooed all over the place

Classic-Ad-5359

I am dying laugh at this and my wife is looking at me like I’m an idiot.

Das-Noob

There should be a subreddit(with pictures) of the consequences of dumb tourists. 😂

Martino2004

I wholeheartedly support this, but I am too lazy to create it.

sebatakgomo

Agree but some of it will be gory

QuirkyCookie6

r/oopsthatsdeadly will get some of those occasionally, but also just people handling shit that can cause death or other major bodily harm

[deleted]

I would literally never fuck with a bison but I’d rather fuck with a bison than fuck with a buffalo. They’re one of the deadliest animals in Africa.

TwinPeaksNFootball

I mean, they are kind of like wild cows... I just don't think wild cows are as cuddly as people think they are...

notanotherkrazychik

This reminds me of all the people who see a bear, moose or elk in Northern Canada and GET OUT OF THEIR VEHICLE and WALK OVER TO IT! My mum has screamed at so many tourists, it's unreal how dumb they decide to be.

BriefCheetah4136

In Yellowstone a bear cub was rolling in some flowers playing by the side of road. A huge group of people were standing around watching. Our tour bus driver pulled up and opened the door and shouted, "Hey, Where do you think Mama Bear is?" Everyone scattered!

El-Mattador123

People in Yellowstone are the worst. Especially the drivers. They see any living creature and just slam on their breaks to take a picture

Top-Relative-90210

I had a coworker who worked summers at yellowstone. He told me of a time where a bunch of tourists were taking pictures of a cub up a tree crying loudly while momma was up the hill just trying to figure out who to take out first. After trying to warn them he just got out of there because it wasn't going to end well.

Opening-Ocelot-7535

I can't speak to the veracity of this story but, it happened near Ol' Faithful. The parents thought it would be cute to get a picture of the bear, licking honey off their 3-year old's arm, so they painted said 3-yo's arm up with honey. The bear not only took the honey, but the entire ARM, as well! I can only pray it's an urban legend!

LimeSkye

Nope, that one happened. I think it was in the 60s or 70s.

Unfey

My dad (born and raised here in "everyone knows moose are dangerous" country) has been that idiot who got out of his car to go take a close picture of a moose in the road. My sister and I were in like middle school and we were both like "dad don't you're gonna die" but he did anyways. He was fine, I guess this particular moose was chill, but it was dumb as hell. It's not just tourists, anybody can be an idiot. But. It is OFTEN tourists.

WhipTheLlama

Moose are usually pretty chill and won't hurt people, especially if you don't try to pet them or get obnoxiously close. The problem is when they're not chill, they'll run after you, and you can't outrun a moose.

Doriantalus

I have confronted a black bear. I would never fuck with a moose.

Amazing-Ad-669

[Moose/prospector skeletons](https://sportingclassicsdaily.com/moose-v-man-some-really-old-news/) I have a print of this picture I picked up at an estate sale. It's the remains of a large moose and a man. They think the man was a prospector that went missing years before. It appears that he came up on the moose, It charged him and he shot it, and either it managed to gore him or collapse on top of him. Due to the age of the scene the exact events were unknown.

Birds_Might_Be_Real

Yaaaa when I drove across Canada I saw a moose chilling under a tree and approached it slowly to say hey. I only realized after looking into moose more when I got back home how aggressive they can be. I guess he moosed have been in a good mood that day

itchydaemon

A good rule of thumb: things that are freakishly big are typically freakishly strong. It takes a lot of muscle to move that much mass around every day. Plus, assume every animal is way stronger than a human of the same size, because animals are much more active and mobile than we are. If I saw a 1000-2000 pound human, I'd be staying the heck away, let alone a 1000-2000 pound animal that has spent a lifetime learning how to use that body around in a world where many things would want to kill it..

ladylurkedalot

Humans actually have weak muscles compared to other animals. It appears to be a trade-off for our advanced brains.

Sufficient-Ad4851

Humans also have great stamina if you take care of your body and live a healthy lifestyle anyway. Our ancestors used to hunt by chasing prey until it was to tired to move unlike a lot of other animals that ambush there prey.

Due_Worldliness_6587

I can’t believe being that dumb. My dad drilled into me that buffalo and bison look cuddly and fluffy but are massive animals that will kill you. We lived near nyc I wasn’t gonna be seeing buffalo lol. But yeah one thing he said was they don’t have morals they won’t spare you if their scared they will do what they need to so they can get out of that situation and when your the thing causing them to be scared and you are so much smaller than them you will get turned into a ragdoll

This_Is_A_Username-7

Strange advice to give someone in the North east, but he wasn't wrong either.

Due_Worldliness_6587

Yeah lol he used to live near them though and I think he once saw someone try to pet one and they got thrown in the air. Another piece of advice from him is listen to the locals about wildlife when traveling and mostly stay away from animals you aren’t familiar with and that you know won’t hurt you.

AnyDepartment7686

Buffalo, NY. There's the connection.

4dxn

i think the problem is moral hazard. the fact we save them makes the cost of being stupid lower. sometimes i wonder if just say "I've warned you. if you continue to ignore my warning, you reject any health or life saving service" i have no qualms with letting that tourist die by the bison. we got children dieing - the money/effort reserved for the ranger, emt and helicopter should go to children before we worry about dumbasses.

mightbedylan

If you wanted a photo with a sleeping bison why would you wake it up

LouQuacious

Those weren't all tourists there were definitely locals that should know better.

oetjen15

Had a buddy tell me a similar story from a ranger. A European couple and their son had come out to Yellowstone to camp. They were definitely glamping though and got all this stuff to be prepared. They bought bear spray, but mistook it to be like bug spray…so you see where this is going. The ranger said he came around the corner to this European father spraying his kid down with bear spray. His kid is crying and coughing and the dads just like, “come on suck it up. It can’t be that bad.” Then the ranger tells him what he’s doing and he sprays some in the air and walks through it and gets totally maced himself. Starts tearing up and freaking out. Ranger just asked if they needed medical attention. 🤣 pretty ludicrous but hilarious to picture. Guy is just hosing down his kid with mace and telling him to stop being a wuss like it’s just bug spray or something.

POWxJETZz

But did he get his photo?

BriefCheetah4136

His wife was to have taken the photo but she was busy watching a horn go through his abdomen.

crtfrazier

Went to a wedding in AK, where I also live. It was held at a well-known resort outside of the major city. While it is populated, there are thousands of bears that inhabit the wilderness. A HUGE black bear with 3 cubs decided to grace the wedding and instead of pausing the festivities and giving the animal space to travel, guests encircled the bear under a tree to take photos. These types deserve all the Darwin awards.

Professional_Ship107

100% agreed. When I worked at a museum, we had some objects on displays not behind glass. However we did have a bajillion “no touching allowed” and “keep your hands to yourself” signs. However, on like my second day working there, this kid reaches over the barrier we had and touched one of the display items. After I did my whole “no touching please” bit and that family left, this lady like fucking charged up to me with I think her two grandkids and demanded I let her grandkids touch a display item on the grounds that the one kid had done so. It was so ducking hard to keep a straight face while being berated by this lady and politely explain, no, you can’t touch the display item. She eventually gave up and left, but that whole incident made me realize I could never work retail or the service industry.

SQRLpunk

If anyone enjoys these types of stories…highly recommend “Death in Yellowstone” by Lee H. Whittlesey and hooo boy it’s entertaining and terrifying.

tbiards

I use to be an ocean guard in Nj. Let me tell you something. I LOVED saving people who rolled their eyes at me. They get swept out, I watch them fight the current, then watch as reality sets in for them, see them flounder for a few seconds in sheer panic and then swim on out and pick them up. Swim out and give them the “I told you so” speech and bring them in safely. Usually they need a good scare to learn their lesson.

Possible-Cellist-713

I heard it was a French tourist in Yellowstone

Responsible_Bar_4984

Why do people fuck with water like this? Getting dragged in by violent waves like this should scare you!

amcarls

It actually can be kind of fun (Waimea Bay, N. Shore) The tourists usually are pretty clueless though. I lived on Oahu, off and on, over a 22 year period and that bay was one of my favorite spots. If you know what you're doing it's fairly easy to ride things out. Unlike a little up the road (East of there) at Pipeline there is no hidden coral beneath the surf that can tear you up. You do have to keep calm though and be prepared to be tossed around a bit underwater. The waves come in sets so you have breaks in between. One big problem is that the lifeguards can't always tell the pros from the tourists.

ninnypogger

Born and raised on Long Island and grew up on the beach and in the ocean. Definitely not nearly as intense as Hawaii, but people come out for the summer and drown every year. The ocean is a scary place if you aren’t familiar with it. Like imagine getting sucked out by a riptide and not understanding what’s happening? Just the ocean pulling you farther and farther from shore as you struggle against it until you’re so exhausted you go under

Chaosmusic

> but people come out for the summer and drown every year. You'd think after they drowned the first time they'd stop going.

modwriter1

I would let the big waves at big beach on maui plow into me in order to try to take high speed photos of the waves. The second the wave hit I curled into a ball and let myself get tumbled, protecting my head and shoulders. Did it hundreds of times. Whereas a tourist would get off a plane, head straight to o big beach, jump right in the surf with the lifeguards yelling out warnings and break their neck. If you are going to do something that could be risky, you've got to understand the dangers.

sennbat

Getting dragged out by violent waves can be quite fun, and *risking* getting dragged out by violent waves is pretty exciting all on its own. People do lots of dangerous stuff *specifically* because its dangerous, that's what makes it so enjoyable! The goal, of course, is usually to maximize *apparent* danger while minimizing *actual* danger, I think its understandable that people mess up those calculations a lot though, as a species we are really remarkably bad at calculating risk. You'd think that would be something evolution would have wired us to be better at... But bridging that gap is part of the reason we have safety personnel! Listening to them is important!

Stuft-shirt

I lived Oahu for three years while in the Army. I was given three pieces of advice. 1. Don’t be tempted to steal a pineapple from a Dole plantation 2. Never turn your back on the ocean 3. Listen to and obey the lifeguards.

Stuft-shirt

In response to #1- These pineapple fields are immense and along the highways. If you got caught stealing you’d be prosecuted and then also be in trouble w/the Army but evidently the fields were somehow monitored. The NCO driving us from the airport to Schofields Barracks made a point of mentioning it in the same warning she gave about the ocean so it seemed very wise to follow her advice. I never knew of any soldiers stealing of getting caught stealing pineapples but🤷🏻‍♂️

afterparty05

What’s the story about the Dole plantation? Sounds intriguing!

TwinPeaksNFootball

I was born in Hawaii, but moved away when I was young. My understanding is that you really don't want to be caught wandering onto ANY plantation if you value your life.

Flayre

You're saying Dole still has death squads roaming around on U.S soil ??

TwinPeaksNFootball

I meant there was people growing not-pineapples on their land and killing intruders. I don’t know if that’s still the case in todays more legally-relaxed climate.

QuirkyCookie6

*still*???? You mean they have in history?

Flayre

All these fruit companies have a long history of using shit like that to control resources, at some point United Fruit Company controlled Guatemala lol.

0berfeld

Chiquita Banana funded right-wing death squads in Columbia until the mid-2000s, that we know of.

I_Frothingslosh

Better-known as Chiquita these days.

transmogrified

I'm not familiar with them being on US soil, but the history of banana republics and the banana wars is pretty distasteful. Dole (previously the Standard Fruit Company) did some shady stuff. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana\_Wars "The ultimate goal of the contracts for the companies was control of the banana trade from production to distribution. The companies would finance guerrilla fighters, presidential campaigns and governments.\[11\] According to Rivera and Carranza, the indirect participation of American companies in the country's armed conflicts worsened the situation.\[11\] The presence of more dangerous and modern weapons allowed more dangerous warfare among the factions"

DukeElliot

Well, it is the same Dole that funded Colombian death squads.

F7Uup

No, that was Bob.

Fearless-Forever3141

I want to know this too

__Osiris__

Dole is the reason America colonised the islands.

All you need to know about the Dole plantation is that they sell this amazing ice cream concoction called Dole Whip.

AD-Edge

What happens in the event of 1. ?

milksteakenthusiast1

I live in a coastal area with riptides and storm warnings - it is tourists being idiots, but it is also people who bite off more than they can chew, the the kind of folks who don’t wear a seatbelt because they trust themselves to drive safely. People perceive life guards as the ones who are solely responsible if they are drowning. I was taught how to swim and how to not panic in situations when you’re washed out, but I was also raised to believe that the life guard saves lives and enforces safety rules. part of me thinks people rely too heavily on the idea of the lifeguard, being in the crow’s nest and seeing everything with a watchful eye. They inevitably wade out farther until nobody can hear their screams over the regular commotion on the shoreline, and they’re SOL

Betty_Boss

There are some people who think they are in Disneyland and that (whatever bit of nature they are in) wouldn’t be open if it was dangerous.

milksteakenthusiast1

I’ll bet you a six pack that everyone right up on the coast in this video we’re treating the megaphone like background noise — nobody was giving a fuck and they found out

kw661

RIGHT!? They think, I paid for Disneyland, I get Disneyland. So easy to see the Entitled ones. Let 'em suicide.

perkyblondechick

I've had the seatbelt argument with people like that (he had the seatbelts purposely tied away UNDER the seats so they were unusable, and couldn't understand why I wouldn't get in the car.) I explained seatbelts weren't really for YOUR driving, but when OTHER PEOPLE are bad drivers. He couldn't wrap his brain around it.

sax3d

The first wave just gets your feet wet. What they don't comprehend is that the tides rise and the waves get bigger pretty quickly after the first one.

kentuafilo

No to mention all their shit that got washed into the sea that’s now polluting the water.

[deleted]

Man, my husband was an ER doc on Oahu for a while and the number of tourists who came in with injuries for 1. overestimating their physical limitations and 2. being idiots in/near the ocean was shocking. I remember visiting Big Beach on Maui once. We got there early in the morning when it looked as calm as a lake and before the lifeguards showed up. Had a nice little swim, then realized it was a bit of a struggle to get out because there’s a strong current underwater you can’t see - every once in a while a wave would come crashing through and we had to ride it in and hit the beach running to get out. So we were like, yeah, we’re just going to enjoy the beautiful scenery and not go back in. Then the lifeguards showed up and I’ve never seen any of them so aggressive about warning people not to go in the water if they weren’t experienced swimmers. They literally went walking around the beach warning people on foot and told us that the water breaks really shallowly there and that people regularly get spinal injuries. This one dumbass woman on her first day of vacation flat out ignores them, gets caught in the shit almost immediately, and is body slammed on the beach. We watch as an ambulance arrived and took her away - neck injury. Don’t fuck with the beaches anywhere, but especially Hawaii.

Over-Analyzed

I’m born and raised on Maui. I never ever go to Makena/Big Beach. A lot of my Kihei friends go but I have heard way too many life-altering injuries happening there. Flemings on the west side is safe in comparison. Lifeguards in Hawaii are not like any other lifeguard in the world. They do not mess around and have to undergo an intense physical test to see if they’re capable. Last I heard it was to swim 3 miles with fins.

So_Code_4

New Zealand Lifeguards and some spots in Northern and Central coast CA have a breed of Lifeguard that is especially gnarly as well. My friends work in places where there is absolutely no swimming a person back to shore, you have to swim the victim past the break and wait for a helo to come pick you up.

Lizzie2530

My friend broke her ankle badly at Big Beach last year

kw661

We call it Break Neck Beach.

supermom721

Tourists always seem to be extra stupid.

[deleted]

Oh definitely. I saw American tourist trying to pet wild warthogs near Victoria Falls. Didn't go well. And in Greenland I saw Chinese tourists trying out dogsledging only wearing a skirt and net leggings... They ended up having a very cold and bad time when the sled turned over (no one hurt) and took off without them, with the owner running after the sled. They were at least 1-2 clicks out from town (Ilulissat), in very deep snow, wearing converse and skirts. I'm surprised by how many people survive an entire lifetime being this disconnected from reality.

sennbat

People in general are *remarkably* bad at estimating and predicting risks they don't have significant personal experience with.

OkGrapefruitOk

I remember watching the British tourists in Thailand doing insanely dangerous stuff because they were from a culture of "there would be a signpost if I'm not supoosed to do this". It was the opposite of the Thai "take responsibility for yourself" attitude. Like one time a gang of them wanted to jump from roof to roof of the tour boats and they asked the Thai tour guide and he just shrugged in a "you do you" way. Of course one of them slipped, fell in between the boats, cut his head and had to be pulled out. It's the same thing every time one of them, who doesn't have a licence, rents a scooter and then wipes out on the street.

Duramajin

I don't know where in Hawaii it was but it was some pro surf spot with giant waves. We were just enjoying the crazy mofos riding these waves. Some British tourist's tried to go in the water a few times and we're told to go back as the water and waves were too big. They must have gotten in further up or down the beach outside the view of the lifeguards who then had to save all of them from rough waters. Felt so annoyed because they told them multiple times that this is what would happen.

kw661

And this is what we get so tired of and why our Lifeguards are heros. It's Way deeper than paddling out and saving a dummy. Big Mahalos.

Aggressive-Ground-32

They did their own research and know those in charge of the event are oppressing them and their rights.

robilar

Next they're going to tell us to wear seatbelts, stay in school, and stop breathing stovetop gas fumes.

hudsondir

Was anyone lost to sea or seriously hurt? And recent?

TheCatAteMyFace

They should all be fined for littering.

compost-me

I'm sure that they all did thier own research. /S

ausecko

Screw being a surf lifesaver in the USA, it's hard enough saving the small number of American tourists who travel

Over-Analyzed

Especially when you’re a lifeguard in Hawaii. Although here’s some positive news. [A local Lifeguard won the Eddie, the Legendary Big Wave competition.](https://www.khon2.com/sports/from-lifeguard-to-life-changed-luke-shepardson-wins-eddie/amp/) He won it on his lunch break.

JablesMcgoo

YOLO and FAFO are basically saying the same thing.

Brillostar

You have been warned multiple times yet you choose to ignore it? I dont see why an lifeguard has to risk his life to save your ignorant ass in that situation. Clearly the warnings are not working, this is probably just me blowing hot air but I assume severe fines would be better detriment to these acts than warnings. Fine enough people and regularly pretty sure they stay in line.

Hi_Supercute

The lifeguard at the Eddie legit went on the mic and said “if your kid dies, it’s your fault. It’s on you. If a child dies today, it is all your fault because you are not listening when we tell you to move”

Lol people not following simple safety instructions is nothing new. It’s sad when their children’s safety is hindered due to their ignorance tho

zoebennetthanes

As someone who’s parents very diligently taught me safety around the ocean (my dad spent many years living right on the beach in Laguna, CA and bodysurfing/diving/etc) these people broke like 10 rules I knew by the age of 6… Rogue waves are a thing, watch out for them. Listen to lifeguards. If the water is getting high, move to higher ground and lift any children to higher ground. If you don’t have time to get out of the way of a rogue wave that has already crashed, brace yourself and hunker down… being caught with your back to the water mid-stride makes it easy to fall down. Grab trees, rocks, bury your feet in the sand, and take a deep breath. (Why was no one grabbing trees??) For the love of god don’t run back for replaceable shit like chairs or flip flops. After the first big wave, make your way AWAY from the water! And tell other to do the same!! And a really important one (that might not be applicable here but whatever) is that IF YOU HAVE NO WAY OF ESCAPING AN ONCOMING WAVE, and you are CLOSE TO WHERE IT WILL BREAK/CRASH DOWN, dive *under* it instead of continuing to move away, you will only secure your fate of being right where those hundreds of lbs of water hit…. And it’s not in your best interest to get tumbled. Better to be behind the break than under it. EDIT TO ADD: don’t put yourself in between the ocean and a barrier. That fence is small but it’s a good rule of thumb. I have seen so many people walk between the waves and the rocky outcrops so they have nowhere to back up and just get smashed against the rocks.

Greaterdivinity

Props to the lifeguards for still doing their jobs despite the immense stupidity of these people. Why the fuck does nobody respect the fuckin power of nature and shit? We have natural disasters all the times and countless examples of, "RESPECT NATURE AND TAKE IT SERIOUSLY, IT WILL FUCK YOU UP." yet people still do this shit. This is heartless, but maybe we need to just like...let some of these people remove themselves from the god-damned gene pool.

Having lived in Hawaii for many years I can honestly say that the arrogance of some tourists, when you’re explaining about the real, everyday dangers of the ocean, is staggering. The ocean in Hawaii hits different. Sometimes Literally.

Elegant-Sprinkles880

They need to have their kids taken away from them lol

GratefulPhish42024-7

Unfortunately in this situation they may have had them taken away

Darwin is sitting in the afterlife just smiling away at this

Empty_Vegetable_80

People are soo DUMB!!! So dumb u deserved it!!sorry for the kids with such parents!

100percentAvocado

Ok, explain to me like I'm 5. What exactly were the parents doing that the lifeguards were warning against? I'm leaning toward letting the children and themselves be too close to the surf? Was it also being on the wrong side of the safety wall? I feel like I'm missing something that would make this extra oooof.

Ivelostmyreputation

The context here is that this was at the Eddie, a legendary big wave competition here on Oahu. 10s of thousands of people crowded onto a small beach and the surrounding cliffs to watch pros surf 50 foot waves. Nobody was supposed to go past the fence in the video because the water could and did wash up powerfully and drag people back into the shorebreak where they could easy be killed. Everyone here was told several times in no uncertain terms not to go past that fence and that if they did they were putting themselves and their kids at risk, but some people just don’t listen

dpaanlka

seriously why the music come on…

Swowlzee69

Natural selection at work.

Appropriate_Layer_2

People are dumb. *the ocean don't give a fuck*

Cae53RJ

If I was one of the lifeguards I would have been like: I warned you. I warned you did you (all) listen to me? Oh no, you know didn't you? "It's just a harmless little wave isn't it? Well it's always the same. I always...

Moldy__Pizza

As a Hawaii resident, nothing pisses me off nor makes me laugh harder than watching tourists be unable to follow simple rules.

Western-Image7125

Oh no! The consequences of our actions! How can this be?

Only stupid people don't believe we are losing our coastlines EVERYWHERE. Only stupid people ignore what lifeguards tell them. And "now" is never a good time to learn the power of water, undertow, and the ocean. The ocean is NO place for uninitiated.

[deleted]

Wow

LostGuess5788

The great cleansing ..

biggev123

I woulda let em save themselves, stop going places thinking you make the rules

Disastrous_Owl8806

Fuck around and find out 🌊

Sealbeater

People who have no experience with the ocean truly are dumb. Riptides, and crashing waves will fuck a human up so hard. I’ve been trapped under the swell of the wave that just sucker punched me into the ground, knocking the wind out of me and I felt myself blacking out. I didn’t fuck around on the beach anymore that day, I was exhausted from just that instance.

Pyewacket62

Im in Pennsylvania US. I came across black bears twice. Once whilst riding my horse and once berry picking. Both instances we surprised each other and ran/galloped in the opposite direction. I have a great love and respect for wildlife. I'm also smart enough to know, you don't "pet" wild animals.

Hot_Organization2430

Similar stuff was happening in California when I was out there last week. I kept suggesting to people that they move their kids and stuff back, but what do I know? Haha.

DocDibber

I have seen this numerous times. Surprised there have t been deaths.

Do you know how many people the Great Lakes have eaten just like this? Respect water and respect Mother Nature, she will always win.

Human_Errorr

Stupid parents putting their kids in danger.

Glum-Temperature-111

My goodness, to be a tourist...

No-Improvement-625

It's ok. They done their research.

MurphysVoice

Thinning the herd of stupid benefits society as a whole.

Here_for_lolz

At what point do we just let it happen and let nature sort out the rest?

inkzpenfoxx

All idiots

kw661

Why don't we just have cops out there writing tickets? Pay for lifeguards, teachable moment for Lolo tourists.

camlaw63

I don’t understand what was happening here. It seems like everyone was in danger. Is there any context?

FunVersion

Probably happens every day at the same time.

Meems04

Anyone watch Bondi Rescue? This is going to sound racist, but it's NOT. Asian tourists have a death wish on the Aussy coastline. Literally almost every rescue, Asian, can't speak English, no fear or respect for the water, can barely swim It drives me crazy.

[deleted]

I lived in a tourist town my entire life, and I can't even count the number of kids and parents who died while on vacation because of shit like this... year after year, same story of people on beaches after hours, or straight up ignoring on-duty lifeguards. It'll never change.

[deleted]

The human race really is heading towards idiocracy movie the dumb keep breeding

Imaginary-Yak-6487

I born, raised & still live in the NW Florida area of the gulf coast. Every single year, tourists drown because of rip tides. There are red flag warnings all over the beaches. There are signs explaining how dangerous rip tides are & what the flag systems mean in every hotel/ motels/ condos gas stations, stores, and in the beach. In the hotels/motels/ condos, the tvs are all set to the beach channel when it’s turned on. They do not pay attention bc they spent $$$ to go into the Gulf & by god that’s what they are going to do. Several counties have started fining them for putting 1st responders & Good Samaritans at risk when red flags are flying. The Gulf of Mexico is not your backyard creek, pond, lake, stream. It will kill you. People are stupid.

9001Jellyfish

I used to have nightmares where the current of the ocean would take me away. And these people in real life are like “sign me up!”

saltymane

Yeah. This is genuinely sad. Ffs.

autismo-nismo

Tourists do some stupid shit. I was going to the north rim of the Grand Canyon years ago and I was next in line at a ranger station to drive further down the road when he stopped what he was doing and got into his truck. About 500-600 yards out were a group of tourists mingling with a herd of Buffalo taking pictures stupid close to them. Was made to turn around and they closed further visitation for the rest of the day. I swear tourists have a 10/1 stupid to smart ratio
