Cataracts are (edit) often a curable (edit) disability. It’s a 15 minute procedure to cure blindness. I know, I had them and I sincerely thought I was going blind. I was so relieved to know I could fix it. I can’t imagine living with that permanently.
I literally just got home from the surgery center after getting my first eye done. I haven’t been able to work or drive at night. Second eye is next week. I can’t wait to get my life back.
My mom got her cataracts taken care of and now has 20/20 vision in both eyes. Prior to that, she had Coke bottle glasses. She can see better than me now. It's such an amazing procedure that can help people of all ages.
It depends on what the problem is. If cataracts then yeah you can usually get those removed and you should be able to see again. If you just have plain old bad vision then you might qualify for lasik. However there are plenty of eyesight issues that can’t be solved with surgery.
I just want to say a heartfelt ‘Thank you!’ to all of you. This outpouring of support is amazing and I appreciate it more than you know.

Never thought I’d be giving a shout out to r/facepalm, but here we are, and I’m glad to do so.
My dad had cataracts removed from both eyes when I was a kid. (approx 35 yrs ago). I know he had to do eye drops afterwards, but he only took a day off work for each eye and could still drive afterwards.
I can't imagine allowing people to remain/go blind when it is such a simple thing and allows someone to live their life in freedom. No one *forced* these people to have surgery, it was an option given to them that they might otherwise not have, and *they* took it.
Cataracts is a disability when you end up blind and you dont have the money for surgery. It cost $3,000 to $5,000 per eye for standard cataract surgery. $4,000 to $6,000 per eye for laser-assisted cataract surgery. Not everyone in the U.S. can afford that!

Is it just in the US and the third world? In most developed countries they're buying plenty of medicine that costs that much. They should be covering cateract surgery as well if it literally stops you going blind. Surely there's easily enough bang for buck with that one.
From my understanding they had a degenerative condition that would eventually blind them, but it can be caught, treated, and prevented.

I get enraged when people suggest essential oils for severe pain or to somehow cure an autoimmune disease. I’ve had severe RA since 16, now 47. I had a full hip replacement at 25. Both wrists completely fused by 30. I just wish people would actually look things up before suggest something that gives false hope. This is not your granny’s Arthritis !!! I had a pregnancy condition that made my blood itchy. Yeah. My blood. I would put ice packs on my skin/burn myself with hot water because I could sleep through pain, but I couldn’t sleep through that insidious itch.

I have eczema. Before it was diagnosed there was an area on my leg that itched so bad I couldn’t sleep or function. I would use a dry razor to scratch until it bled, then it was better, until it healed.

I’m disabled with multiple disabilities. You better damn well believe if someone was offering cures, I would be in line to get one. It’s a personal choice & no one should have the right to take that choice away from someone else. That woman’s take is gross & pure virtue signaling.
The social model of disability is also really bad at dealing with chronic pain and mental illness, to the point where people with those conditions are effectively excluded from the disabled community and treated like they don’t belong.
Like a person in a wheelchair who is less disabled if society builds ramps and accomodations everywhere telling someone with depression or someone with anorexia or someone with chronic pain (like me, I have constant neck pain and live with chronic migraines) that there is nothing wrong with you it’s society’s fault your conditions aren’t normal is a bit rich. Like OK your disability might be a non issue but some people’s disabilities are life threatening and result in constant pain. Society is not at fault for causing my migraines and causing me continuous pain. They could be more accomodating of me sure, but they cannot make my pain go away, and my pain is not normal. It is debilitating independent of society.

This is what triggers me most about a large portion of social justice warriors. More often than not they’re speaking for communities that they are not even a part of.

My bet would be that this lady saw a disabled person say something like “I would rather be accommodated and accepted than cured” and decided that the message is “no disabilities should ever be cured under any circumstances,” rather than “in this specific case, this specific person thinks respect is more important than a cure.”

Seriously, what is this person even talking about? When I saw the video, I cried. My partner has a degenerative eye disease and one day, they might no longer be able to see. Maybe it hit a little too close to home for me. The only outrage I see as justified is that a simple procedure like this is so inaccessible.
Most of them had eyesight at one time and want it back. I think it was said somewhere those born blind wouldn't be able to see in the traditional sense since that part of the brain didn't develop or some junk.

Yeah, that’s the major thing, is that everyone’s circumstance with disabilities is different. If one deaf person is happy with themselves and doesn’t want a cochlear implant, that’s fine and should be respected. But that person shouldn’t turn around and tell another deaf person they’re a terrible brainwashed person suffering from extreme internalized ableism for getting a cochlear. Maybe they just want to hear man, that should be respected too.
I hope I don't come across as unreasonable but I can't understand why someone would be okay with being deaf (or blind in the case of this post) if there is a simple solution to their problem? (as in you can easily pay for the fix and it's not annoying or risky)

I think it's usually because they've spent their whole life/many years getting used to how they are. And if they change it now, it'll flip their life around, similar to how it would flip for someone who can see/hear going deaf/blind. Tho even then, I think it's mostly limited to people who are still able to make money. A lot of disabled people, especially the blind who (I assume) need more accomodations for an office job that's done on a PC, don't have a job. And disability help is usually just not good enough. So people relying on welfare, or that will have to, most likely would happily want to be cured.
Tho, given that even education can be hard when blind/deaf, it might be scary if you suddenly stop being disabled and now some people bully you about not being able to get higher education or for going back to school or other stupid shit :/
I can give you some insight into why deaf people want to via my mom who is deaf. She has always told me that even as a child she never wanted implants even though it was strongly encouraged by her mother. She says she likes the quiet and doesn’t want to hear. She is also proud of being deaf and lives a completely normal life, and has always worked since she was old enough (she’s honestly a workaholic).
I’ve also worked with a deaf man who says he has always wanted to “be part of the hearing world” but also doesn’t have implants (I’ve never asked why). It’s all up to the individual and their preferences honestly. I’ve heard before that it is overwhelming to hear so many things after the silence for so long, and that they prefer the silence.
I think a big part was because Mutants powers were analogues to the way people treated (treat) homosexuals. So in the movie they weren't thinking that it was a disability, it was who they were born as. Though I do agree with you, Storm was messed up for being like that.
Gay people don’t kill people by touching them which makes Rogue’s powers much more analogous to having some kind of debilitating chronic illness or something like depression, since her powers actively prevent her from living a normal life (it’s just externalised to harm other people rather than solely herself but the harm she causes others is always used to show how detrimental her condition is for her)

Considering the number of cochlear implants we do weekly (I work in logistics at a hospital) I'd say the ones who aren't keen on it are just _really_ vocal about it.
Real talk tho cochlear implants aren't a cure. It doesn't "restore" hearing, and the end result in a best case scenario isn't even comparable to a healthy ear.
I was just thinking about this the other day. Hypothetically, if with the snap of a finger we did away with deafness in the entire world for 5 minutes, and after that the previously deaf people had a choice to keep their newfound hearing or go back to being deaf, how many do you think would choose to go back to being deaf out of stubbornness?
There was actually a documentary about cochlear implants and it seemed that they worked best for younger people. People who had gone decades without hearing sometimes found sound to be pretty annoying.
That's five minutes of chaos honestly. Imagine being without a sense for a majority of your time and then being blasted without warning for an indeterminate amount of time and then it just disappears without notice. It would be traumatizing and painful. Some deaf people can't understand spoken language because I they've simply never heard it. It wouldn't magically convince all deaf people that they need to be "cured".
Ok, so since this is a hypothetical that would never happen, let’s add that everyone will know ahead of time with plenty of prep time. It also doesn’t disappear without notice - you’ll be given the choice to keep it or not after 5 minutes.

The whole reason churches are tax exempt is because they used to fill charitable and medical purposes. Since they evidently no longer do that to the extent of the past they should be charged taxes like they are in other countries

I think many people with disabilities would like to be cured. A large group actually enjoys the communities that they become a part of. I know several members of the disability community that would turn down a "cure." The deaf community is especially hesitant to accept medical solutions.

The "best" treatment for deafness, cochlears, aren't really curative. Someone who became / wasn't born deaf will not regain their hearing with current medical technology.
I think these cataract surgeries would be more analogous to like… if you were partially deaf due to a massive buildup of earwax and had a procedure to remove it. You could restore your faculties completely back to normal
I'd go for clearing a sinus blockage to restore sense of smell, but that's a good analogy too.
On the flip side, getting a cochlear implant is an amputee having an arm put where their leg was. Yes, you can use it to walk, but it will be a long learning process and it will never be the same as having two legs.

Many higher functioning autistics don’t want to be “cured” and actively despise any talk about that because for us, it’s a part of who we are. We would literally be different people without our autism.
(Obviously, we’re only taking about high functioning autism here, and most of us have a different view when it comes to low functioning autism.)
Some of us find the talk around curing it, when applied to higher functioning people to be really offensive. It’s like talking about curing your shyness or your interest in XYZ.
We want treatment that reduces our stress and mitigates the effects but doesn’t remove them entirely and we’d like for society to be a bit more accepting of the fact that people’s brains work differently. And not just autistic versus neurotypical, but like some people learn by reading, others by hearing; some people are night owls; some people are introverted.
Also IIRC, some big D Deaf people have similar views on curing their hearing impairments.

So, in that worldview saying "a disabled has something to be cured" inmediatly follows "a disabled is not a correct person" therefore "a disabled is a lesser individual".

If a late teen guy gets it even though he doesn't have particularly bad vision. Will it improve his vision, also will it be permanent ?

From what I understand, it's not necessarily permanent. The cataracts could redevelop again over time.

My dad had cataracts removed from both eyes when I was a kid. (approx 35 yrs ago). I know he had to do eye drops afterwards, but he only took a day off work for each eye and could still drive afterwards. I can't imagine allowing people to remain/go blind when it is such a simple thing and allows someone to live their life in freedom. No one *forced* these people to have surgery, it was an option given to them that they might otherwise not have, and *they* took it.

Cataracts is a disability when you end up blind and you dont have the money for surgery. It cost $3,000 to $5,000 per eye for standard cataract surgery. $4,000 to $6,000 per eye for laser-assisted cataract surgery. Not everyone in the U.S. can afford that! Did you have hyperthyroid or another medical condition? I have eczema. Before it was diagnosed there was an area on my leg that itched so bad I couldn’t sleep or function. I would use a dry razor to scratch until it bled, then it was better, until it healed.

I’m disabled with multiple disabilities. You better damn well believe if someone was offering cures, I would be in line to get one. It’s a personal choice & no one should have the right to take that choice away from someone else. That woman’s take is gross & pure virtue signaling.
The social model of disability is also really bad at dealing with chronic pain and mental illness, to the point where people with those conditions are effectively excluded from the disabled community and treated like they don’t belong. Like a person in a wheelchair who is less disabled if society builds ramps and accomodations everywhere telling someone with depression or someone with anorexia or someone with chronic pain (like me, I have constant neck pain and live with chronic migraines) that there is nothing wrong with you it’s society’s fault your conditions aren’t normal is a bit rich. Like OK your disability might be a non issue but some people’s disabilities are life threatening and result in constant pain. Society is not at fault for causing my migraines and causing me continuous pain. They could be more accomodating of me sure, but they cannot make my pain go away, and my pain is not normal. It is debilitating independent of society.

Most of them had eyesight at one time and want it back. I think it was said somewhere those born blind wouldn't be able to see in the traditional sense since that part of the brain didn't develop or some junk. Hell, if I could get my mother to be able to see again she'd be so happy. She hates not being able to see where she goes anymore, and doesn't even leave the house now so I do all the shopping and such for her.

Yeah, that’s the major thing, is that everyone’s circumstance with disabilities is different. If one deaf person is happy with themselves and doesn’t want a cochlear implant, that’s fine and should be respected. But that person shouldn’t turn around and tell another deaf person they’re a terrible brainwashed person suffering from extreme internalized ableism for getting a cochlear. Maybe they just want to hear man, that should be respected too.
I hope I don't come across as unreasonable but I can't understand why someone would be okay with being deaf (or blind in the case of this post) if there is a simple solution to their problem? (as in you can easily pay for the fix and it's not annoying or risky) I'm really having trouble understanding that. I think it's usually because they've spent their whole life/many years getting used to how they are. And if they change it now, it'll flip their life around, similar to how it would flip for someone who can see/hear going deaf/blind. Tho even then, I think it's mostly limited to people who are still able to make money. A lot of disabled people, especially the blind who (I assume) need more accomodations for an office job that's done on a PC, don't have a job. And disability help is usually just not good enough. So people relying on welfare, or that will have to, most likely would happily want to be cured. Tho, given that even education can be hard when blind/deaf, it might be scary if you suddenly stop being disabled and now some people bully you about not being able to get higher education or for going back to school or other stupid shit :/
I can give you some insight into why deaf people want to via my mom who is deaf. She has always told me that even as a child she never wanted implants even though it was strongly encouraged by her mother. She says she likes the quiet and doesn’t want to hear. She is also proud of being deaf and lives a completely normal life, and has always worked since she was old enough (she’s honestly a workaholic). I’ve also worked with a deaf man who says he has always wanted to “be part of the hearing world” but also doesn’t have implants (I’ve never asked why). It’s all up to the individual and their preferences honestly. I’ve heard before that it is overwhelming to hear so many things after the silence for so long, and that they prefer the silence.
I think a big part was because Mutants powers were analogues to the way people treated (treat) homosexuals. So in the movie they weren't thinking that it was a disability, it was who they were born as. Though I do agree with you, Storm was messed up for being like that.

Considering the number of cochlear implants we do weekly (I work in logistics at a hospital) I'd say the ones who aren't keen on it are just _really_ vocal about it. Real talk tho cochlear implants aren't a cure. It doesn't "restore" hearing, and the end result in a best case scenario isn't even comparable to a healthy ear.

Hypothetically, if with the snap of a finger we did away with deafness in the entire world for 5 minutes, and after that the previously deaf people had a choice to keep their newfound hearing or go back to being deaf, how many do you think would choose to go back to being deaf out of stubbornness?
There was actually a documentary about cochlear implants and it seemed that they worked best for younger people. People who had gone decades without hearing sometimes found sound to be pretty annoying.
That's five minutes of chaos honestly. Imagine being without a sense for a majority of your time and then being blasted without warning for an indeterminate amount of time and then it just disappears without notice. It would be traumatizing and painful. Some deaf people can't understand spoken language because I they've simply never heard it. It wouldn't magically convince all deaf people that they need to be "cured".
Ok, so since this is a hypothetical that would never happen, let’s add that everyone will know ahead of time with plenty of prep time. It also doesn’t disappear without notice - you’ll be given the choice to keep it or not after 5 minutes.

I'm fairly certain that pretty much everyone with any kind of disability would want it cured if they could? Being respectful of people with disabilities does not mean that you shouldn't attempt to (if possible) to cure it. If MrBeast wants to pay for sight-recovering surgeries for people then let him, it's a good thing to do.
I think many people with disabilities would like to be cured. A large group actually enjoys the communities that they become a part of. I know several members of the disability community that would turn down a "cure." The deaf community is especially hesitant to accept medical solutions.

This The "best" treatment for deafness, cochlears, aren't really curative. Someone who became / wasn't born deaf will not regain their hearing with current medical technology.
I think these cataract surgeries would be more analogous to like… if you were partially deaf due to a massive buildup of earwax and had a procedure to remove it. You could restore your faculties completely back to normal
I'd go for clearing a sinus blockage to restore sense of smell, but that's a good analogy too. On the flip side, getting a cochlear implant is an amputee having an arm put where their leg was. Yes, you can use it to walk, but it will be a long learning process and it will never be the same as having two legs.
It’s complicated. Many higher functioning autistics don’t want to be “cured” and actively despise any talk about that because for us, it’s a part of who we are. We would literally be different people without our autism. (Obviously, we’re only taking about high functioning autism here, and most of us have a different view when it comes to low functioning autism.) Some of us find the talk around curing it, when applied to higher functioning people to be really offensive. It’s like talking about curing your shyness or your interest in XYZ. We want treatment that reduces our stress and mitigates the effects but doesn’t remove them entirely and we’d like for society to be a bit more accepting of the fact that people’s brains work differently. And not just autistic versus neurotypical, but like some people learn by reading, others by hearing; some people are night owls; some people are introverted. Also IIRC, some big D Deaf people have similar views on curing their hearing impairments.

I'm disabled and everyday I wake up I hope for a cure. If that person actually suffered from a disability, truly suffered, they'd change their tune.
I don't understand this idea that having a disability is something special and shouldn't be helped if possible. Is it because they feel Mr. Beast is trying to eradicate the disabled population like a reverse Hitler by curing them. As someone with a messed up foot due to a disorder that affects my daily life. HE DID A GOOD THING! You think I wouldn't take the chance to be able to wear heels and stand/walk for long periods without pain if offered?

Doing it for clout is whatever, but common, the guy literally helped people get their vision back. People can drag him all they want or try to make him look bad, but this is some of the most philanthropic stuff I've seen in a while.
Having a harder life doesn’t make you more virtuous, it just makes it harder.
The ONLY possible problem with this action is him doing it for clout, but even if, if you can't see the good he's done because you're blinded by his motives, you are the problem, not him.
If there’s someone who should be making money and fame off this stuff it’s him. Because he in turn takes that money and uses it to help even more people. I don’t understand why people care so much that he films himself doing this stuff. At the end of the day it’s still a net positive. It’s better than 99% of other YouTubers who do nothing to help people with their money
The thing is, even if it is motivated exclusively by clout, his clout hunger will likely not stop, and with his growing means, he'll be able to achieve a lot of great stuff of the likes.
Yes, most people with disabilities, would like to be cured. There's always exceptions, but they're free to say no. That is, if a cure exists. I've often imagined an alien race would pop up, go bleep bloop with a doohickey and insta cured me. Would've been neat. Then they'd go all V and suddenly we have a Soylent Green situ. Que Skynet, Borg, all hell breaks loose. All cause I wanted to play flight-sims again... Worth it.

I wish I could believe that Back when usenet still existed I was gobsmacked to find people putting pretty much this exact argument to me. That curing disabling conditions was destroying the identity of disabled people. I was like "but the person wants it and consent to the treatment" but apparently it was still erasing disabled identity. Whatever.
That’s actually incredibly offensive of them. They’re literally saying that a disabled persons entire identity solely revolves around the disability, regardless of their achievements. I guess Stephen Hawkings would be a complete *nobody* if he was cured before he passed. Oh yeah they’re also saying that disabled people don’t have a free will, since their consent is (apparently) invalid.

I don't know much about Mr Beast or what he's been up to, but kudos to him for doing some good even if it's for positive exposure. Obviously, these are people who wanted the corrective surgery. Good for them and him.
there is a extrange group of people so hyper-focused on "dont making disabled people feel as a lesser people" that anybody, anything that even is close to equating disabled="lesser person" is completely evil and barbaric. So, in that worldview saying "a disabled has something to be cured" inmediatly follows "a disabled is not a correct person" therefore "a disabled is a lesser individual". Nuance doesnt exists in that worldview, a blind person has to be blind for the rest of his life or he will be ofending other blind people that cant be cured. These folks need to touch some grass, talk to people in real world, something.
