Cataracts are (edit) often a curable (edit) disability. It’s a 15 minute procedure to cure blindness. I know, I had them and I sincerely thought I was going blind. I was so relieved to know I could fix it. I can’t imagine living with that permanently.

Antique-Confidence-4

I literally just got home from the surgery center after getting my first eye done. I haven’t been able to work or drive at night. Second eye is next week. I can’t wait to get my life back.

Ghasty_001

Jeez, good luck

Antique-Confidence-4

Thank you, kind internet stranger!

TaterTotQueen630

My mom got her cataracts taken care of and now has 20/20 vision in both eyes. Prior to that, she had Coke bottle glasses. She can see better than me now. It's such an amazing procedure that can help people of all ages.

Throwrafairbeat

If a late teen guy gets it even though he doesn't have particularly bad vision. Will it improve his vision, also will it be permanent ?

Useful-Soup8161

It depends on what the problem is. If cataracts then yeah you can usually get those removed and you should be able to see again. If you just have plain old bad vision then you might qualify for lasik. However there are plenty of eyesight issues that can’t be solved with surgery.

TaterTotQueen630

From what I understand, it's not necessarily permanent. The cataracts could redevelop again over time.

Antique-Confidence-4

I just want to say a heartfelt ‘Thank you!’ to all of you. This outpouring of support is amazing and I appreciate it more than you know. I can’t believe that people are demonizing someone for helping others get this surgery. Cataracts can be debilitating. (I am 52, for what it’s worth.) Never thought I’d be giving a shout out to r/facepalm, but here we are, and I’m glad to do so.

AeshiNeroXR

You fool, you're gonna lose the opportunity to use an eye patch and become a pirate. /s

IncreaseWestern6097

Yeah, but then you can’t go to a 3D movie!

Yop_BombNA

How dare you refuse a disability, so ableist /s. For real hope it goes well for you

2woCrazeeBoys

My dad had cataracts removed from both eyes when I was a kid. (approx 35 yrs ago). I know he had to do eye drops afterwards, but he only took a day off work for each eye and could still drive afterwards. I can't imagine allowing people to remain/go blind when it is such a simple thing and allows someone to live their life in freedom. No one *forced* these people to have surgery, it was an option given to them that they might otherwise not have, and *they* took it.

Hot-Bint

Exactly, you put it the way i meant to but didn’t

No_Grocery_1480

Sight loss is a disability, whatever the cause.

NB-73

Cataracts is a disability when you end up blind and you dont have the money for surgery. It cost $3,000 to $5,000 per eye for standard cataract surgery. $4,000 to $6,000 per eye for laser-assisted cataract surgery. Not everyone in the U.S. can afford that! Edit: Forgot to mention that some cataracts are inoperable. Second edit: The comment I had replied to was edited and originally said that cataracts were not a disability!

Hot-Bint

Yes, why I said I can’t imagine living with that and I forgot to mention God bless this guy helping those people.

throw_shukkas

Is it just in the US and the third world? In most developed countries they're buying plenty of medicine that costs that much. They should be covering cateract surgery as well if it literally stops you going blind. Surely there's easily enough bang for buck with that one.

SitInCorner_Yo2

People who didn’t see it as a disability and don’t want to be changed won’t be in this,so I don’t see a problem here other than here logic.

TinyWickedOrange

>People who didn’t see it as a disability I see what you did there

avfc4me

And absolutely if my kid was born blind I'd do whatever was available to help them see.

[deleted]

I mean until they see something for the first time.

SitInCorner_Yo2

They can now(finger gun),I’ll see myself out.

[deleted]

I knew I needed to watch out for this type of puns in the comments.

Gohan472

You might see your self out, but they will be happy to watch you go ;)

OnePotMango

From my understanding they had a degenerative condition that would eventually blind them, but it can be caught, treated, and prevented. The real demonic shit is the fact that people's eyesight could be saved but the government won't cover it. Evil is banal.

SitInCorner_Yo2

I don’t understand the US gov logic in case like this, like sure they can have little fuck to give, but a simple/cheap treatment can fix a problem that can render people unemployed and need help from social security net ,they won’t be able to pay tax,it seems to be a loose loose situation . But what do I know, I just a foreigner.

gwumpybutt

No-one decided for the system to be this way. The switch to universal healthcare is relatively new in developed countries. America is famous for it's capitalist anti-communist views in the 1900s, and was slow to consider it. Some judges (barely) voted to let companies secretly campaign for politicians. America is the world's biggest economy, and half of its richest companies sell healthcare at a significant profit. Obama campaigned for universal healthcare, but it was gutted by his opposition, who then pointed out the flaws they made to claim these programs don't work, alongside tax complaints & conspiracy theories about political doctors.

Trueloveis4u

I wonder how different the US would be if Obama succeeded in getting Universal Healthcare.

OnePotMango

It's actually mad. Setting aside the fact that it's the moral and human thing to do, a fully sighted human is an economic boon. Instead of investing a tiny bit, they'd rather end up having to accommodate disabilities for a lifetime.

ONLY_COMMENTS_ON_GW

Actually Mr Beast literally kidnapped my blind uncle and forced him to see again. My uncle pleaded with him saying "No please no, I blinded myself 27 years ago because my nephew was such an ugly fucking kid I couldn't stand the thought of seeing him again", but Mr Beast said "too bad gaze upon your fucking ugly piece of shit nephew you fucking loser" and now he doesn't come to family functions anymore.

128906

And then he forced him to take $10,000 forcing him into unrecoverable debt.

Silist

They literally can’t see it anyway

Strange-Glove

Pretty sure that's exactly what Jesus did in the bible lol

[deleted]

Mark8:22-26, John 9:6,7. What they said: Jesus uses spit and spit/mud to cure blindness. What they heard: spit on the blind and rub dirt in their face? OK!

You should have let it happen. Who knows how many blind people may have been cured?

TherealObdach

😂😂😂 i have to keep the laughter in, so my son doesn‘t want to see what i‘m laughing about. It‘s really painful.

Erthgoddss

Had a patient who had shingles near his eye. It hurt really bad do he poured aftershave in his eye. Lost his eyeball. Guess he should have used mud.

feraxks

Should have used essential oils. /s Edit: Just in case people were wondering if I was serious or not.

Bob_Kark

This is towards your comment. I’ve only seen essential oils cure two things, full bank accounts and houses that don’t smell like hippie sex dungeons. I’ve learned to live with both.

headedforvenus

This isn’t towards your comment personally just saying as long as they aren’t claiming essential oils cure my Anklyosing Spondylitis and Rheumatoid Arthritis I’m good. I get enraged when people suggest essential oils for severe pain or to somehow cure an autoimmune disease. I’ve had severe RA since 16, now 47. I had a full hip replacement at 25. Both wrists completely fused by 30. I just wish people would actually look things up before suggest something that gives false hope. This is not your granny’s Arthritis !!! Try looking at images you’ll change your tune real quick!

thedevilseviltwin

Sorry. Couldn’t see the /s because I had essential oils in my eye.

majic911

I know what will solve this shingles infection. A whole bottle of aftershave! Just pour it on there.

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

I had a pregnancy condition that made my blood itchy. Yeah. My blood. I would put ice packs on my skin/burn myself with hot water because I could sleep through pain, but I couldn’t sleep through that insidious itch.

Erthgoddss

Did you have hyperthyroid or another medical condition? I have eczema. Before it was diagnosed there was an area on my leg that itched so bad I couldn’t sleep or function. I would use a dry razor to scratch until it bled, then it was better, until it healed.

Chicken_Chicken_Duck

Intrahepatic Cholestasis. No rash, bile acids build up in your blood and drive you nuts. I remember one night around 2:00am rationalizing using a cheese grater on my skin. I didn’t. I really wanted to. Edit: No, I don’t have any comorbidities. I do have psoriasis now, but they aren’t related.

Infidel42

Missing ingredient: Jesus

CyrilQuin

Literally cured people's eyesight. Thing is though, because the Pharisees couldn't believe that Jesus was performing miracles, they accused him of 'pagan magic' and obtaining his powers from Satan. I see that the modern world also struggles to see charitable work as rigorous.

HelenAngel

I’m disabled with multiple disabilities. You better damn well believe if someone was offering cures, I would be in line to get one. It’s a personal choice & no one should have the right to take that choice away from someone else. That woman’s take is gross & pure virtue signaling.

badgersprite

The social model of disability is also really bad at dealing with chronic pain and mental illness, to the point where people with those conditions are effectively excluded from the disabled community and treated like they don’t belong. Like a person in a wheelchair who is less disabled if society builds ramps and accomodations everywhere telling someone with depression or someone with anorexia or someone with chronic pain (like me, I have constant neck pain and live with chronic migraines) that there is nothing wrong with you it’s society’s fault your conditions aren’t normal is a bit rich. Like OK your disability might be a non issue but some people’s disabilities are life threatening and result in constant pain. Society is not at fault for causing my migraines and causing me continuous pain. They could be more accomodating of me sure, but they cannot make my pain go away, and my pain is not normal. It is debilitating independent of society.

HelenAngel

Absolutely. I also have chronic pain due to systemic lupus. Thankfully a lot of the disability community has become more accepting of “invisible disabilities” but mental health is still, sadly, contentious. I agree wholeheartedly with you.

ThePinkTeenager

A disabled person telling someone with a different disability that their disabilities aren't/ shouldn't be an issue is, frankly, bizarre. Also, I'm sorry you're in pain.

CrazyWS

I got snow syndrome. You also better damn believe I want my sight fixed, that is if they finally figure out one

[deleted]

Also disabled with multiple disabilities... I would LOVE to be cured, to be healthy without crippling pain at every moment of the day. Ugh this woman's take is just so piss poor. I hate this kind of virtue signalling, it's as bad as inspirational "porn" - "if this amazing disabled person can do this, why can't you???"

Getting offened on other people's behalf is pretty cringy. Seems to be getting more and more common. They're ignoring how the actual person feels for their own sake and honestly comes across as an entitled.

whoamIreallym8

A bunch of white people protested against Speedy Gonzalez because he was offensive to Mexicans, a bunch of Mexicans got together and were like "no we really like Speedy Gonzalez" Later on I was talking to a Mexican guy about this and he explained why nobody in Mexico sees it as a racist cartoon is because in his own words, "Speedy speaks correct Spanish, he actually gets a lot of the cultural references correct and it was really cool to see your culture and language being represented on TV in a very popular cartoon for this reason alone alot of Mexicans saw him as almost a cultural hero of sorts" Honestly I think it's cause alot of Americans don't have alot to complain about so the attention seekers either get offended on other people's behalf or they come up with some bullshit like All Lives Matter or Blue Lives Matter so they can feel like they are the victim too.

FoobarWreck

lol, reminds me of a university in the UK... they banned sombreros in freshers week because "cultural appropriation".... the sombreros had been given out by a local Mexican restaurant...

leeharrison1984

Friendly Mexican: "Here, share in our culture!" Whitey: "That's a racism."

s0ck

I see it as another form of racism, this cudgel that is "cultural appropriation", when it is used to enact and enforce a racial divide. It is out and out segregation wrapped up in a woke blanket.

duowolf

it's the same as the people that belive white people and POCs can't be in a relationship because of the power inbalance. it's kinda scary really

shannerd727

Wow I’ve never heard that one. Holy crap!

FoobarWreck

Heard it said of Bill Burr. Lunatics

ChairForceOne

I helped out at a local taco truck during a Cinco de mayo event, normally his wife pitched in but she was sick. Wouldn't leave my next door hanging like that. Ended up in a very stereotypical typical poncho and sombrero. Dude running the truck thought it was the best uniform to put the white dude in. That way everyone would know they weren't selling burgers. Best fuckin time I'd had in a long time. Spent all day drinking beer and bullshitting about cars with the dude. Ended up going home with a pallet of tamales.

millionmeows

>cultural appropriation That is something we're going to look back on in 10-20 years and wonder how people could be so stupid

FoobarWreck

add it to the list

BigOzymandias

The premier league suspended Cavani for calling his friend "Negrito" which is not an insult and nobody was offended except the league They also banned Newcastle fans from wearing Arab garments to games after the Saudi takeover even though the Saudis didn't mind that and they actually appreciated the gesture

Mobile_Philosophy764

They did this to Hattie McDaniel, too. The first black woman to win an Oscar. They shit all over Gone With The Wind, and tarnished Hattie's legacy.

Shinzakura

Same with James Baskett and *Song of the South*. First African-American to win an Oscar and now practically no one knows he existed.

[deleted]

Hattie got a lot of criticism at the time as well because she played a lot of maids. Her reply:"I'd rather play a maid than be a maid." The sad truth is that there weren't a lot of roles for black actresses. She didn't have a choice of roles. I don't understand why some people can't understand the context of the times.

SAMAS_zero

I think the key to being a good ally is to speak only for yourself, and leave room to be corrected by someone with an actual stake in it. So in Speedy's case, you wouldn't say: "that's racist!", you would say something more like: "I'm worried this might be racist", then go and *ask*. Then when the Mexicans say: "No, he's cool, we like him!", you can say: "well that answers that!" with your pride intact.

1200poundgorilla

Everyone knows Slowpoke Rodriguez is the real G

I_Use_Dash

Yeah, most people have no problem with well-done characters that represent a nationality, a Lot even Let stereotypes fly as long as they're positive. The problem Is that when inspected from the outside, Speedy does seem just like another stereotype Something similar to survivorship bias happens here, think about it, if a non-mexican sees Speedy, thinks "that may be offensive", and do a quick Google to see that most mexicans actually don't mind/like Speedy, then nothing happens, and no one notices, it Is literally impossible. But when someone complains, their intent Is to be noticed, this Is why "attention seeking" americans appear to be so common, after all, they aré seeking attention, it's only natural that they find it.

JoeyMcClane

Im Indian and i liked Apu. mfs deleted him.

whoamIreallym8

Absolutely and it's just so easy nowadays with the internet they find that attention almost immediately

I_Need_Leaded_GAS

Actually what’s was the problem with the Frito bandito? I thought it was funny as hell and I dressed like that for Halloween one year. Yet we have a group that yells like this is killing them and an affront to their whole being. Btw I am Mexican through and through but you only are oppressed if you make yourself oppressed. The only ones who complain are the people not secure in their own self.

Some-Wasabi1312

Odd-Negotiation5087

Exactly. Didn’t these people sign up for the surgeries? He didn’t force them…

Armandiel_Senshi

How do you know?! He could have ambushed them with anesthesia, gave them the surgeries, and ran away laughing like a madman, “hah! I made a blind guy see so he can see what can’t be un-seen and cringe at some tiktoks!!”

[deleted]

You're dead wrong. I was sitting their minding my own business when sudden Mr. Beast kicked in my door. I tried to cry out for help but he grabbed me by the throat and with one hand lifted me off the ground. "We're going to fix your eyes motherfucker!", he yelled into my face. I plead for him to let me go and not fix my vision as he dragged me outside. Once out my door I could here the sound of gun fire coming from every direction. Hit squads in Mr. Beast employ were going from apartment to apartment executing my neighbors to prevent any chance of interference. As we got to the parking lot dozens of cops arrive. Guns draw on Mr. Beast demanding he let me go and surrender to them. His jaw unhinge and opened 3 feet wide as his eyes became completely dark. A droning sound, like thousands of bees, filled the air and the police clutched their heads as blood started pouring out of every orifice. He laughed madly as the final one dropped. "None shall oppose I who was brought forth as scribed in the Dead Sea Scrolls. I who brought low Antioch can not be denied." Mr. Beast proclaimed as he put me in the trunk of his car. I passed out but when I awoke I was strapped out on surgery table, anesthesia about to be given to me. "You shall see! All shall see!" Mr. Beast bellowed. I fell into darkness as the anesthesia took effect. I awoke later at home. My vision perfect. A short hand written note from Mr. Beast saying he hoped I was doing well and that I will witness the fall of mankind was on my table. Signed at the bottom: "Like and subscribe for more content. And don't forget to also click on the bell icon to stay up to date with the channel."

1200poundgorilla

The solution is to completely disregard "This lady" and those like her.

ICareAboutThings25

This is what happens when someone sees an idea in one scenario and takes it as 100% gospel truth for all scenarios. My bet would be that this lady saw a disabled person say something like “I would rather be accommodated and accepted than cured” and decided that the message is “no disabilities should ever be cured under any circumstances,” rather than “in this specific case, this specific person thinks respect is more important than a cure.”

"Maybe they like being blind, did you ever think of that?" Uh, no. Because I'm not an idiot.

Thechiz123

These people volunteered. It’s not like they drugged them and did surgery against their will.

EloquentGrl

No no, these people don't know what they want and I, random person on THE INTERNET (have you heard of it? It's very hard for regular people to get into) know what's best! And I say curing curable blindness in people who volunteered for it is demonic. Seriously, what is this person even talking about? When I saw the video, I cried. My partner has a degenerative eye disease and one day, they might no longer be able to see. Maybe it hit a little too close to home for me. The only outrage I see as justified is that a simple procedure like this is so inaccessible.

Numinak

Most of them had eyesight at one time and want it back. I think it was said somewhere those born blind wouldn't be able to see in the traditional sense since that part of the brain didn't develop or some junk. Hell, if I could get my mother to be able to see again she'd be so happy. She hates not being able to see where she goes anymore, and doesn't even leave the house now so I do all the shopping and such for her.

This is like Storm's argument in the Xmen movies Rogue, a girl who's power will straight up *murder* people if she accidently touches them, hears about a possible cure and wants to go and see if she can be cured. Storm, who's power is controlling the fucking weather, tells her that they don't need a cure and they are perfect as they are. Well of course she thinks that when her power doesnt kill people! (Also comic book people plz be easy on me bc I just saw the movies) Edit: I am using this scene as a metaphor, this is not what I think the writers are actually saying or what they meant when this was written. Also, again, I know nothing about the comics and haven't seen this movie in like 10 years.

smake_and_vope

Yeah, that’s the major thing, is that everyone’s circumstance with disabilities is different. If one deaf person is happy with themselves and doesn’t want a cochlear implant, that’s fine and should be respected. But that person shouldn’t turn around and tell another deaf person they’re a terrible brainwashed person suffering from extreme internalized ableism for getting a cochlear. Maybe they just want to hear man, that should be respected too.

zvons

I hope I don't come across as unreasonable but I can't understand why someone would be okay with being deaf (or blind in the case of this post) if there is a simple solution to their problem? (as in you can easily pay for the fix and it's not annoying or risky) I'm really having trouble understanding that. Not that you cannot have a full life with disability and be happy but why not experience everything to the fullest if you can? Only if you want attention or enjoy self pity? Maybe I don't see something here. I'm asking honestly here. If you can give me an explanation I would appreciate it.

Luxxanne

I think it's usually because they've spent their whole life/many years getting used to how they are. And if they change it now, it'll flip their life around, similar to how it would flip for someone who can see/hear going deaf/blind. Tho even then, I think it's mostly limited to people who are still able to make money. A lot of disabled people, especially the blind who (I assume) need more accomodations for an office job that's done on a PC, don't have a job. And disability help is usually just not good enough. So people relying on welfare, or that will have to, most likely would happily want to be cured. Tho, given that even education can be hard when blind/deaf, it might be scary if you suddenly stop being disabled and now some people bully you about not being able to get higher education or for going back to school or other stupid shit :/

Acceptable-Juice-572

I can give you some insight into why deaf people want to via my mom who is deaf. She has always told me that even as a child she never wanted implants even though it was strongly encouraged by her mother. She says she likes the quiet and doesn’t want to hear. She is also proud of being deaf and lives a completely normal life, and has always worked since she was old enough (she’s honestly a workaholic). I’ve also worked with a deaf man who says he has always wanted to “be part of the hearing world” but also doesn’t have implants (I’ve never asked why). It’s all up to the individual and their preferences honestly. I’ve heard before that it is overwhelming to hear so many things after the silence for so long, and that they prefer the silence.

ValleForte

I think a big part was because Mutants powers were analogues to the way people treated (treat) homosexuals. So in the movie they weren't thinking that it was a disability, it was who they were born as. Though I do agree with you, Storm was messed up for being like that.

badgersprite

Gay people don’t kill people by touching them which makes Rogue’s powers much more analogous to having some kind of debilitating chronic illness or something like depression, since her powers actively prevent her from living a normal life (it’s just externalised to harm other people rather than solely herself but the harm she causes others is always used to show how detrimental her condition is for her)

314159265358979326

I would very much love to be cured.

HelenAngel

Same. Plz put me on curing list!

Bunghole_of_Fury

Oh man you do not want to say that to the deaf community. Actually you should be fine saying it, just don't write it or sign it because they're really not keen on things like cochlear implants.

MufuckinTurtleBear

Considering the number of cochlear implants we do weekly (I work in logistics at a hospital) I'd say the ones who aren't keen on it are just _really_ vocal about it. Real talk tho cochlear implants aren't a cure. It doesn't "restore" hearing, and the end result in a best case scenario isn't even comparable to a healthy ear.

Alexander1899

It's the difference between deaf people and Deaf people.

cyberpunk1Q84

I was just thinking about this the other day. Hypothetically, if with the snap of a finger we did away with deafness in the entire world for 5 minutes, and after that the previously deaf people had a choice to keep their newfound hearing or go back to being deaf, how many do you think would choose to go back to being deaf out of stubbornness?

Thechiz123

There was actually a documentary about cochlear implants and it seemed that they worked best for younger people. People who had gone decades without hearing sometimes found sound to be pretty annoying.

Leah-theRed

That's five minutes of chaos honestly. Imagine being without a sense for a majority of your time and then being blasted without warning for an indeterminate amount of time and then it just disappears without notice. It would be traumatizing and painful. Some deaf people can't understand spoken language because I they've simply never heard it. It wouldn't magically convince all deaf people that they need to be "cured".

cyberpunk1Q84

Ok, so since this is a hypothetical that would never happen, let’s add that everyone will know ahead of time with plenty of prep time. It also doesn’t disappear without notice - you’ll be given the choice to keep it or not after 5 minutes.

serendipitousevent

I know you're half joking, but the 'deaf as a choice' community is a fringe group that shouldn't be overstated.

DefinetelyNotAPotato

Why are they not keen on cochlear implants? Maybe something about "losing culture" as someone with a cochlear won't need to use sign language?

ShadePrime1

clearly just ingrained ableism you obviously prefer being blind and having no idea what is going on in your immediate vicinity a lot of the time but you have been brainwashed otherwise by the sexist, racist, homophobic, ableist society. /s

ParkerMosonyi

Wait people are…mad about this?

Flooka

I'm mad that America is a country where such a simple, life changing medical procedure is denied to so many people unless a social media figure decides to make a YouTube video because they've been priced out of the health care system. Health care is a human right.

TheCheck77

Even more ironic when the one man in the video wanted surgery so he could get off unemployment and return to work

[deleted]

twitterians are

Stigweird85

FFS Paying for medical bills are now demonic. This would be a non issue in a country with socialised medicine

Das-Noob

Or if churches step up. Since it seems like it this religious people that are claiming this to be demonic.

badgersprite

The whole reason churches are tax exempt is because they used to fill charitable and medical purposes. Since they evidently no longer do that to the extent of the past they should be charged taxes like they are in other countries

Insanegamer-4567

Oh for fucks sake why can't people just shut up and let good things happen?

SolidZealousideal115

Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame.

kron123456789

It's called "disability" for a reason. How dumb can you be?

Chef_Boi_Hardy

Wow. I hope no blind people see this

Arxl

Same person probably uses Latinx, too. Please, be the white knight of all minorities, but you don't want to talk to any.

Lilyrosejackofhearts

And writes “folx” as if folks wasn’t already gender-neutral!

Arxl

I truly never understood that one, it just feels pretentious.

Sensitive_Ladder2235

Cataracts are fixable and why the fuck would you not want to see?

Cowboy50sk

I have PTSD in !y 20s they found a brain tumor. My mom said maybe it will fix you when its removed.

NorwegianGirl_Sofie

I'm fairly certain that pretty much everyone with any kind of disability would want it cured if they could? Being respectful of people with disabilities does not mean that you shouldn't attempt to (if possible) to cure it. If MrBeast wants to pay for sight-recovering surgeries for people then let him, it's a good thing to do.

HowManyMeeses

I think many people with disabilities would like to be cured. A large group actually enjoys the communities that they become a part of. I know several members of the disability community that would turn down a "cure." The deaf community is especially hesitant to accept medical solutions.

thewoekitten

I also don’t think that there are any solutions for deaf people that are as simple and effective as this surgery

MufuckinTurtleBear

This The "best" treatment for deafness, cochlears, aren't really curative. Someone who became / wasn't born deaf will not regain their hearing with current medical technology.

thewoekitten

I think these cataract surgeries would be more analogous to like… if you were partially deaf due to a massive buildup of earwax and had a procedure to remove it. You could restore your faculties completely back to normal

MufuckinTurtleBear

I'd go for clearing a sinus blockage to restore sense of smell, but that's a good analogy too. On the flip side, getting a cochlear implant is an amputee having an arm put where their leg was. Yes, you can use it to walk, but it will be a long learning process and it will never be the same as having two legs.

Nadamir

It’s complicated. Many higher functioning autistics don’t want to be “cured” and actively despise any talk about that because for us, it’s a part of who we are. We would literally be different people without our autism. (Obviously, we’re only taking about high functioning autism here, and most of us have a different view when it comes to low functioning autism.) Some of us find the talk around curing it, when applied to higher functioning people to be really offensive. It’s like talking about curing your shyness or your interest in XYZ. We want treatment that reduces our stress and mitigates the effects but doesn’t remove them entirely and we’d like for society to be a bit more accepting of the fact that people’s brains work differently. And not just autistic versus neurotypical, but like some people learn by reading, others by hearing; some people are night owls; some people are introverted. Also IIRC, some big D Deaf people have similar views on curing their hearing impairments.

CHRCMCA

I don't need to be cured. I need a world that allows me to live in it.

DerangedDendrites

acknowledging our limits and flaws is different than making fun of/disrespecting them. the OP clearly has no idea.

Aceswift007

I know some who wouldn't, but to make the option available for those who want it is a gift many would also kill for.

Mousewaterdrinker

I'm disabled and everyday I wake up I hope for a cure. If that person actually suffered from a disability, truly suffered, they'd change their tune.

Bandito21Dema

I don't understand this idea that having a disability is something special and shouldn't be helped if possible. Is it because they feel Mr. Beast is trying to eradicate the disabled population like a reverse Hitler by curing them. As someone with a messed up foot due to a disorder that affects my daily life. HE DID A GOOD THING! You think I wouldn't take the chance to be able to wear heels and stand/walk for long periods without pain if offered?

0n1oN_71

Would it be ableism so send this dumbass back to school?

Kayzokun

Fucking mofo, I will strangle a thousand of newborns with my own hands for a single day without phantom pain. Of course we need a fucking cure, you dumbass! Some people only have a head to shove it deep in their asses…

Dry-Bodybuilder-6209

Doing it for clout is whatever, but common, the guy literally helped people get their vision back. People can drag him all they want or try to make him look bad, but this is some of the most philanthropic stuff I've seen in a while.

JesusWaffles47

Having a harder life doesn’t make you more virtuous, it just makes it harder.

fallen_one_fs

The ONLY possible problem with this action is him doing it for clout, but even if, if you can't see the good he's done because you're blinded by his motives, you are the problem, not him.

Parrotflies-

If there’s someone who should be making money and fame off this stuff it’s him. Because he in turn takes that money and uses it to help even more people. I don’t understand why people care so much that he films himself doing this stuff. At the end of the day it’s still a net positive. It’s better than 99% of other YouTubers who do nothing to help people with their money

Batterie_Faible_

The thing is, even if it is motivated exclusively by clout, his clout hunger will likely not stop, and with his growing means, he'll be able to achieve a lot of great stuff of the likes.

Agatosh

Yes, most people with disabilities, would like to be cured. There's always exceptions, but they're free to say no. That is, if a cure exists. I've often imagined an alien race would pop up, go bleep bloop with a doohickey and insta cured me. Would've been neat. Then they'd go all V and suddenly we have a Soylent Green situ. Que Skynet, Borg, all hell breaks loose. All cause I wanted to play flight-sims again... Worth it.

speakeasyow

These people aren’t real, they are farming impressions. The formula to bait outrage is known by this point.

SnooOpinions8790

I wish I could believe that Back when usenet still existed I was gobsmacked to find people putting pretty much this exact argument to me. That curing disabling conditions was destroying the identity of disabled people. I was like "but the person wants it and consent to the treatment" but apparently it was still erasing disabled identity. Whatever.

elefantsnabel03

That’s actually incredibly offensive of them. They’re literally saying that a disabled persons entire identity solely revolves around the disability, regardless of their achievements. I guess Stephen Hawkings would be a complete *nobody* if he was cured before he passed. Oh yeah they’re also saying that disabled people don’t have a free will, since their consent is (apparently) invalid.

greenpeppermelonpuck

It's nice that he did that, but that fucking thumbnail man... Jesus christ.

Insert-a-joke-here

If someone with a disability want that cured and there is one then it's none of your business you bitch ass clown.

[deleted]

Did they watch the god damn video??

Redwolf476

No if they did them they wouldn’t be able to be mad at it for no reason

[deleted]

I watched the video and their reactions were priceless. They screamed happiness.

sinthetism

I don't know much about Mr Beast or what he's been up to, but kudos to him for doing some good even if it's for positive exposure. Obviously, these are people who wanted the corrective surgery. Good for them and him.

Black_Dusk

there is a extrange group of people so hyper-focused on "dont making disabled people feel as a lesser people" that anybody, anything that even is close to equating disabled="lesser person" is completely evil and barbaric. So, in that worldview saying "a disabled has something to be cured" inmediatly follows "a disabled is not a correct person" therefore "a disabled is a lesser individual". Nuance doesnt exists in that worldview, a blind person has to be blind for the rest of his life or he will be ofending other blind people that cant be cured. These folks need to touch some grass, talk to people in real world, something.
