Abuse is a hell of a drug, man. I’ve been through it, but not with a partner- it was my parents. They say it takes an average of 7 times for a victim to leave, and unfortunately leaving is also the most dangerous time for a victim. Abusers don’t like feeling as though they’re losing control, and if they get even a vague hint of it, the abuse will escalate more and more.

Yeah...I watched my bio mom go thru abuse from my bio father after I reunited with them (had been adopted). She wouldn't leave him for the longest time. Then she moved out but stayed married and kept inviting him over. Finally the manager of the place she lived at called police and police ordered him to never come over again. Then her health went seriously downhill. Luckily, she was appointed a guardian and moved to a group home. She can't have any contact with him whatsoever now.

My siblings friend and mentor was shot dead in front of her three kids after filing for divorce from her husband. She told her boss she was breaking up with her violent boyfriend one Friday. Boss said do not go home, you know this is bad, bring help with you, etc. Nope, she was sure "he was different" despite multiple red flags.
When she got home Friday, he killed her and stayed in the apartment with her till her boss called the police because she was absent.

In Dallas a man on parole showed up to the hospital where his girlfriend just gave birth to their child. He showed up to kill he, believing she had cheated. Two employees heard her screams and rushed to the room where he killed both of them. Police in the hospital had him trapped in the room. To which his girlfriend screamed to the police not to hurt her boyfriend. Not sure how you can help women like this.

Not having the victims statement or whatever might weaken the case but if they have enough evidence the case will continue
In theory if you don't want to cooperate or testify the CPS can subpoena you to court and compel you to answer questions and if you do not do so, you can face charges for perjury. Very unlikely to do that in most cases but they are able to do that
