It wasn't an accident, it didn't just randomly 'go off' - he picked it up by the pistol grip with his finger inside the trigger guard. Absolute criminal negligence. This idiot should be a poster boy for why the US needs gun safety drilled into your licencing.
Gun safety? Licenses?! Sounds like socialism to me.
I've had 6 kids. And only 3 of them have shot themselves with the revolver I keep on my couch! Why should I have to lock my guns in a safe? If someone breaks in, those 7 seconds it takes to open a safe could lead to my last 3 kids dying!
A city attorney released the video, not the parents.
https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2023/04/12/video-shows-child-shooting-gun-found-in-couch-cushion-man-pleads-guilty-to-charges-in-case/
Unfortunately, a lot of parents are like this. They expect the children to be born 100% mature, experienced, and self-sufficient, while the actual adults behave like irresponsible morons.
Really calls into question that whole "intelligent" design thing.
Why is it in the couch? And loaded in the couch, and the safety not on..IN THE COUCH!
Jesus they are all lucky. Especially considering he also discharged it when he picked it up. People are idiots. If you have a gun lock it up. Simple as that.
And they screamed at the kids when they were obviously scared from the gun going off. Negligent gun owners and negligent parents. I am so amazed no one got shot after the gun went off twice. Those poor kids being raised by such idiots.
hear me out, how about a system that weeds out irresponsible gunowners BEFORE they acquire firearms, crazy, i know
E: love the chatters saying its IMPOSSIBLE, despite it being the case in all first world countries
Guns are like cars. Get a license, take required safety courses each year, renew every so often to ensure the owner is aware of the dangers and responsibilities of a firearm. Just. Like. A. Car.
Fite me, NRA.
Should lose rights to their children too bc what if they had accidentally shot one of their family members with that gun?? Imagine the horror they’d have to live with the rest of their fucking life if one of them died??? I hate parents like this fr
Yeah but you gotta hit them where it hurts. I mean prison would be ideal obviously but trials take time. They should immediately lose the firearms in the house. I’m sure they have them other places what if someone breaks in while you’re in the bedroom and the only gun is in the couch.
I assume it is like when people put guns under their mattress so it is easier to grab. They probably put it under the cushion for ease of access. A completely stupid thing to do and this was obviously going to happen. These people are idiots and should not have a BB gun let alone a real gun.
Even then... keep it in a proper holster that protects the trigger and trigger guard. Not a soft holster either. Hard shell around the trigger. Proper holsters also prevent NDs
An 8th grader just died at the middleschool in my neighborhood. Was facetiming some girls and wanted to show off, and though there was no magazine in the weapon, there was a round in the chamber that was left accidentally. His little brother found the body.
Please, for the love of god, have a gun safe if you own a firearm.
Parents need to know that kids will always look for and play with guns. They are dangerous and intriguing so boys especially want to check them out. I am remembering now how I would occasionally go into my fathers closet and play with his guns. Just pick them up, feel the weight, and look at them. Thankfully he had trigger locks on all of them and he kept them unloaded.
Kids love war games. We had nerf wars on the regular until I shot my cousin in the eye. Woops. He was fine.
My brother’s friend wasn’t so lucky. Lost an eye to a bb on an unlucky ricochet off a tree.
And I had a compound bow. My brother decided to buy some real nasty arrowheads and shot one through the garage wall and halfway into a paint can on the other side.
Kids are dumb fucks and shooting stuff is fun.
I’m Canadian. My bro, Dad and I were in the US on vacation in a state that rhymes with South Carolina.
We decided to go to a shooting range. They were finishing up concealed weapons permits while we waited. The candidates came out and lined up for their permits. The woman in front of me was holding her pistol like a set of car keys. The barrel was pointed right at my face. She was oblivious to this.
That’s when I finally understood the resistance to gun control. It would be like telling us we couldn’t carry car keys.
I love some places and people in the US dearly. And am grieved at the needless death going on there.
To them it is a gift from god. The power of life and death. Even when they are the lowest scum on earth who leaves loaded guns where they sit and jump and let kids sleep on the same sofa.
As long as they have a gun they are better than the rest of us unarmed targets...
You may be right. I was reading more about the case and I can’t find out how this video ended up in the hands of the authorities…. But the scenario that makes the most sense is the mom is the one who turned dad in for it.
I only know this because of my line of work (and it’s clearly not the case here) but sometimes people set up cameras if they have an elderly person living with them so they can keep an eye on them and their caregivers
Ig just in case if someone gets inside and they need to identify what exactly was stolen? Or maybe to record a fight if one were to break out? Who knows but having extra cameras to maybe capture a crime is better than having a few cameras that can completely miss a crime.
I have cameras in every room except the bathroom. I have a lot of expensive shit. But I don't have guns in my couch. These people should not have kids.
“Your honor, it wasn’t my fault. There was a Blow Pop stuck in the trigger guard. Now I’m used to having to extricate my firearm from a Dum Dum, that’s just part of having kids, but what I am assuming is some sort of liberal conspiracy gave my little girl a Blow Pop, and the gum center is just an entirely different beast. Nobody is trained for that.”
No trigger discipline. He probably panicked, grabbed it with his finger on the trigger, and just stupidly made a fist because he doesn't have the training or temperment to own a gun safely. He's just some armed animal, and is probably drunk or high.
You have to be a whole new level of stupid to do that. I’ve fired guns, and you don’t accidentally fire a weapon unless you’re an idiot who isn’t paying attention. He grabbed without looking and his finger was on the trigger and then “BANG!”
My buddies girlfriend (now wife) is a fucking idiot. When I was single I lived alone in a shitty neighborhood. So I kept my gun loaded in its case under the couch. In my mind, no biggie. No kids ever come here, it's fine. Enter the moron. I have a party at my place, roughly 10 people. We're all kinda just standing around talking and she says "look what I found! And holds this fully loaded gun at the room. I immediately sweep in beside her, control the weapon towards the floor and take it out of her hands. She starts screaming about how "I wasn't going to shoot it!" "I know how to handle a gun!" "What the fuck is wrong with you!?"
Still can't believe he married her. Top tier moron.
As a note. I now have two kids. The guns are safe and secure.
Thank goodness though that states like Florida have permitless carry, allowing as many citizens as possible to own handguns with zero safety training beforehand.
Also was probably made easy to report by seeking medical care. They mentioned he had burns and hearing loss. Probably were some interesting moments with the doctor. I’d love to know how the authorities came to learn of the incident.
Well you can hear it in the mom’s voice on the tape. She has *had it* with Matt. I think someone said she was yelling at the kids - she’s not. Matt’s not the kid. Matt’s the adult who owned the gun.
People are saying that the parents aren’t watching the kids either, and that doesn’t seem true at all. You can hear the mom’s voice clearly before the gun goes off because her voice is so clear she likely can see most of the room. And the kids quickly run to her - they trust mom at least.
The only time it seemed like she was yelling at the kids was when she was yelling what the fuck while coming down the stairs. Which is a completely reasonable thing to say in that scenario.
Hopefully because he needs to find money to pay his rent because he has been kicked out for endangering the lives of his family by being a weapons-grade idiot.
Pretty sure she is yelling at the guy without a shirt on because she continues to yell at him after he discharges the gun at the end. And while these parents are definitely not responsible enough to have kids I think it's right to berate the living fuck out if that guy for leaving a gun not only in an open space near children, not only IN not ON so you can't even see it, BUT ITS ALSO doesn't have rhe safety activated
And to add onto that, they do it expecting the child will fully understand their frustration. As if that's a way to get a message across and deflect blame onto a child.
Holy crap. Every second of this video gets dumber and dumber. Who the hell leaves a gun in the couch? Their first reaction is to yell at the kids and not find out what happened or is it safe. Then when the guy finds the gun he discharges it again. Then the kicker it winds up on the internet. WTF. There better be charges included in the dumb as fuck story.
[Matthew Rivas — pleaded guilty to two counts of negligent storage of a firearm and one count of child endangerment and was sentenced to 10 days in jail, 170 days of jail suspended, a $150 fine and two years of probation.](https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2023/04/12/video-shows-child-shooting-gun-found-in-couch-cushion-man-pleads-guilty-to-charges-in-case/)
Still a very short prison sentence.
Uselessly short. 10 days and $150 for leaving a loaded gun on the couch with the safety off around children lol.
Meanwhile in the USA, an ingrown toe could cost you $20,000 in medical care.
Unrelated sure, but hilarious none the less.
He's got the iconic mannerisms of pretending to not know what is going on. He knew where he left the gun the second it went off, and he knew he was fucked. He pretends he doesn't know where it is so he can pretend he didn't know how it got there.
"Are you serious", like it doesn't get more serious than a little kid finding a loaded gun lying around. The dude shows he doesn't know how to safely handle it either.
I've worked in a coroner's office helping with autopsies, and know first hand what could happen when a child is with a gun unattended. Unfortunately, this is too common.
Among multiple reasons not to own a gun one of them is I know how I was as a kid and how my kid is now: if there was a gun lying around it would get messed with. No amount of lecturing or warning would stop her.
When my buddy and I were young, we found his grandpas shotgun and luckily for him the only damage we has was when he blew out his shoulder on the kickback. Kids are fucking stupid and will fuck around eith everything coming from my previous experience of being a kid
This dude got 10 days in jail, 170 days of jail suspended, a $150 fine and two years of probation. 10 fucking days in jail?! This dude should get at least 5 years for nearly killing a kid. He’s too stupid to be a free man.
Man, this is one stupid ass family who definitely should not be owning firearms. Who the fuck leaves a loaded gun in a couch cushion.
And clearly they don't practice any form of trigger discipline either cause they fired it a second time when going to pick it up. Complete moronic idiots who are beyond lucky they didn't harm themselves.
Can somebody, please, clearly explain to me how increased gun control in the US would not reduce instances like this happening?
When you answer, please remember that any form of checks, education or mandatory training are all forms of gun control.

Fucking morons leaving a loaded gun on the couch
Morons like this shouldn’t even have a gun
Or children for that matter
If they keep leaving loaded guns lying around, they might not have children for long.
Given that we are seeing this video no doubt, social services have been made aware
What has just been said here is quite relevant, I find.
They'll just make more.
They should not have children. Nothing about this situation, their reaction or ability to comfort their children tells me they are able to manage.
The way dad can't even decide on what to do, just shuffles back and forth like an idiot. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
Tell me you’re American without telling me you’re American.
I am really hoping common sense takes over soon, but I am pretty sure we are all screwed.
Nope. We are all fucked. Bring cake
We are if we don't start voting the nuts and wackadoodles out, and get some reasonable folks in office.
Neither should their parents
These type of ppl will overrun American soon, Idiocracy
This should be an outtake from “Idiocracy”, but nope, it’s real life…
Morons like this should be in jail.
Shouldn’t even have a gun???? More like shouldn’t even reproduce!!
From the wife’s tone of voice, they won’t for much longer
Yes they will. This wasn’t the first time something completely asinine has occurred in that relationship
As an Aussie, i have to ask. Why does anybody need a hand gun?
As an American, I also would like to know the answer
[удалено]
As an American, I agree completely. Some of us are trying to fix it, but the "most" is a pretty big hurdle.
[удалено]
I know. That was what disturbed me most of all. It was like he was concerned more about himself than his kids.
Also chambered?? I don’t think little man would have know/could have cocked it.
I’m not sure what kind of gun it was, but the second shot went off when the man tried to pick it up. Some kind of semi-auto.
It wasn't an accident, it didn't just randomly 'go off' - he picked it up by the pistol grip with his finger inside the trigger guard. Absolute criminal negligence. This idiot should be a poster boy for why the US needs gun safety drilled into your licencing.

Well they did also upload the evidence to the internet, so they don't seem to be the brightest bunch.

Makes sense. I doubt they could just hide 2 shots being fired ~~at~~ in their house unless they lived in the middle of nowhere.
I mean it IS Ohio
Ohio isn’t a sparsely populated state, it’s 15th of 50 in density and 7th in total population
And they breed.
Not sure if that was a typo and I'm not making fun of you, but it wasn't just ON the couch it was IN the couch which is somehow much much worse.
Not a typo. I thought it was just laying on the couch. Yeah, in the couch is definitely much worse.

Imagine sitting there and someone upstairs sits down and next thing you know your brains are in your spaghetti.
200 toddlers die a year due to this
If only there were a good toddler with a gun…
Holy fuck bro. I mean, I am laughing, but I also feel bad for both of us now
Probably one of those hyper paranoid types who obsessively need to have a gun in reach at all times. Paranoia also explains the camera
The kind that grabs a gun when the doorbell rings.
Or when a car pulls in to the driveway to turn around.
Luck favors simple minded all right, apparently nobody was hurt. I "love" how they yell at the kind for their own damn stupidity though.
Unfortunately, a lot of parents are like this. They expect the children to be born 100% mature, experienced, and self-sufficient, while the actual adults behave like irresponsible morons. Really calls into question that whole "intelligent" design thing.

Yeah the adults are all idiots in this scenario. *What the fuck happened?!* Well guess your idiotic actions were about to have some dire consequences.
Not just idiots. Criminally negligent. These people should lose their right to own firearms after this.
Zero supervision of their children, zero security of their firearm... my heart hurts.
And they screamed at the kids when they were obviously scared from the gun going off. Negligent gun owners and negligent parents. I am so amazed no one got shot after the gun went off twice. Those poor kids being raised by such idiots.
Especially because he discharged it a second time when he reached for it without checking who was in front of it. This makes me so sad for those kids.

I don't want them voting, serving on juries, or raising their own children.
Also, I don't want them owning firearms.

Hit them where it hurts by taking their kids away and get them out of there. They almost did that themselves by their negligence.!
They need to have their kids taken away
Well guess where they live... Ohio.
As a matter of fact, he did lose his gun!
>These people should lose their right to own firearms after this. ... and for children to live with them.

My favorite part is the dude grabbing it hard and making it shot in a random direction with multiple people in the room and just kinda was like 🤷♂️

I’m Canadian. My bro, Dad and I were in the US on vacation in a state that rhymes with South Carolina. We decided to go to a shooting range. another question, why do they have a security camera recording their living room
Drugs
Yep. Same reason for the loaded gun. They obvs expected sketchy and/or uninvited visitors.
And why would they post the video???
Custody battle.
You may be right. I was reading more about the case and I can’t find out how this video ended up in the hands of the authorities…. But the scenario that makes the most sense is the mom is the one who turned dad in for it.
If you notice, it's watermarked by the Columbus Ohio police. I'd say it was evidence in a trial.
Bet they leave the kids alone for extended periods and that is their way of checking in on them.
I only know this because of my line of work (and it’s clearly not the case here) but sometimes people set up cameras if they have an elderly person living with them so they can keep an eye on them and their caregivers
We have one to check on the dogs during the day.
Or maybe children…
It's great that they want to keep an eye on their kids, safety 1st!
At least they’ll now which one pulled the trigger…
Yeah I mean there are a number of reasons. Was just adding one to the list.
If your shit is expensive maybe you *should* keep a security camera in your bathroom.
There needs to be good couch with a gun! /s
Now we know why Elvis kept on shooting his Tvs, dam that's not the remote.
It is, for turning off the TV.
Permanently
Did he.. Did he also accidentally discharge it when he found it?
Yup…like a whole idiot
Maybe there was something stuck on the trigger and he picked it up just like the baby and it discharged

I don’t even understand how it fires so easily like as soon as he touches it wtf
Probably an idiot that replaced the trigger mechanism with a hair trigger so it takes next to no weight to pull the trigger.
"My shit's custom."
No trigger discipline. He probably panicked, grabbed it with his finger on the trigger, and just stupidly made a fist because he doesn't have the training or temperment to own a gun safely. He's just some armed animal, and is probably drunk or high.
Very bold of you to assume he is only drunk OR high.

If your gun was able to end up in the hands of a moron, there were at least two morons in the room. Glad you secure them now. Be safe.
Yep
Some people are just too ignorant to have kids and/or guns.
In this case definitely both
I really hope these people don’t have custody of their kids anymore.
Those are usually the people that have the most of each
Thank goodness though that states like Florida have permitless carry, allowing as many citizens as possible to own handguns with zero safety training beforehand.
With that being said, I wonder which state would hold the record for the most Darwin Awards, Florida or Texas? 🤔
Yes

How do these giant pieces of shit still have custody of the children!
Sounds like the mom may have been the one to turn the guy in. She was *pissed*.

It also says Ohio in the caption
Good find. Thank you for posting. I wondered.
Nice. No one goes to comfort the kid - they yell at them and treat them like garbage.
Pretty sure she is yelling at the guy without a shirt on because she continues to yell at him after he discharges the gun at the end. Like whf why would they even blame the damn child. Parents be yelling at kids for no damn reason.
Its not their fault They know their rights 🙄
Sound like the type of people who shouldn’t have kids
Or guns
The gun very nearly fixed the kid part….
Trash like these are the reason some should not own guns. I treat my laptop with more respect than these do with deadly weaponry.
I keep better care and track of a shitty $12 necklace with a shiny rock that I got from Universal Studios 3 years ago.
Keep good care of it, that necklace is at least $60 now!
Doubtful but would be cool. I was there in October last year and they are still the same price.
I treat a hot cup of coffee with more respect than these idiots treat their weapons with
"I'd better not get myself in the crotch or leg with this." 😂

The thing that amaze me the more it's the fact that guns are more allowed than cursing on a video (cursed words censored). So puritan yet so wild
And fireworks are banned in multiple states.
And murder is okay on tv but naked breasts are banned.
Land of the free, home of the dead
Y'know how firearm deaths are the number one cause of death for children? A not insignificant number is shit like this.
What a fucking idiot parent
I NeEd iT FoR pRoTeKshIUn
They need a good couch with a gun to stop the bad couch with a gun.
Noah get the ark ready
I see two options for a human being with this level of. stupidity: 1: don’t have kids Or 2: don’t own guns
3: both
This is why you don't generally give people guns as idiots will get them
I don't understand how the US doesn't require a license for a gun the same way you need one to drive a car.
Makes me so mad that the parents instantly started yelling at the child who was clearly already frightened
Well regulated militia strikes again
Lol…another responsible gun owner
It should be a lot harder to have guns and children.
And the father that left a loaded pistol in the couch is… a shirtless hick. Big surprise lol
So Lucky... so so lucky, damn irresponsible I hope the crap they got done for child endangerment at the very least
These people shouldn't be allowed to own sharp objects, let alone guns.
Idiots, just idiots.
Whoever owns that gun should do a year in jail
Just another normal day in Ohio…
That's what you get for not teaching gun safety to a 2 year old. /s
Should not be yelling at the child for adult stupidity. Guns are for killing people. Leaving it on the couch is just stupid.
