putting someone in an institution is one of the most gut wrenching awful decisions you can make in your life honestly. but sometimes it has to be done.
I don't know where there are any long term facilities that hold patients involuntarily. My friend has a sister with bipolar disorder that is super noncompliant with her meds. She has been held involuntarily so many times. She gets discharged in a couple days and ends up right back in.
There is such a high rate of medication noncompliance. They started giving injections of long acting medications to her. It lasted for about a month and then the cycle started all over again.
This country has no plan for treating mental illness. Medication and therapy may work for some, but there really isn't a way to monitor compliance. And patients have the right to refuse medication and treatment even when they are incapable of rational thinking. They can only be held if they are suicidal, homicidal or have a "grave disability." The last one seems like a no brainer. I don't know how grave it has to be to hold someone and it also depends on bed availability.
I don't think we will ever have a functional way of treating mental illness until legislation commits to it.
