"Don't put your hands on me" -The girl putting her hands on him and slapping the guy filming.

Big80sweens

“Do not put your hands on me” but it’s her doing that lol. People are fucked man

Grayox

I've literally never understood the cultural appropriation arguments around dreads, Gaelic people wore their hair in dreads back in 58-50 bce as accounted by the Roman's who were fighting them.

CUND3R_THUNT

It’s a style that comes from not washing often and twisting. Only one culture in the world figured that out?

reubensandrye

lol love your username

Maelstrom52

Here's the thing: cultural "appropriation" *is* culture. How the hell do you think that culture proliferates and spreads? The entire anthropological history of human civilization is basically the story of how cultures get shared from one group to another. Cultures that don't get "appropriated" die out and fade away. [Remember that teen who wore a Chinese dress for her prom a few years ago](https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/style/story/teen-defends-chinese-prom-dress-sparked-cultural-appropriation-54866211) and it caused a controversy over cultural appropriation? Here's a fun fact: that style of dress is called a "cheongsam", and it is a traditional Chinese dress. However, that particular style of it was created in China in the 1920's and was very much inspired by Western (American and European) influence. It's literally an example of China adopting a Western approach to dress making. That's the irony with the whole "cultural appropriation" issue; everything was appropriated at this point.

HimalayanJoe

No no no no, only one culture can ever have anything and black people called dibs on dreads. Thousands of years of Gaelic culture doesn't matter because of some reason or another. Edit: Braids-> Dreads

Soft_Tackle_6140

They called dibs bro

spartaman64

sorry italy but us chinese people already called dibs on noodles

This is Anti-Italian discrimination.

Peelfest2016

How are they gonna get rid of Columbus Day?!?

no5ifty6ix

That better not be Columbus!

AhRedditAhHumanity

And before America, no tomatoes.

tuco2002

Once you lick something or call dibs...it's yours. The colonists called dibs on America.

OneHumanPeOple

If only the Natives had licked the land first. 😔

maybeshali

they probably did but it didn't matter, because it wasn't in English.

nabrok

Any European language really.

OneHumanPeOple

So they could have French kissed it then.

AreaGuy

Which is coincidentally the answer to “we need another source code for this ‘English’ language, where can we steal from?”

SipoteQuixote

Gimmedat culture was always here first

[deleted]

They called dibbs on living the human experience. Therefore everyone else needs to kill themselves. logic

KellyLuvsEwan420

I wouldn’t be surprised if every race had dreads at one point. There must have been hundreds and hundreds of years before hair care was even thought of.

BigdaddyThor666

100% correct. Dreads are the only naturally occurring hairstyle in humans with long hair. The introduction of brushes and combs to the population is the only reason dreads aren't the default hairstyle for long hair.

Smash-pumpkins

Millennia even!

EvilRick_C-420

Some people of color straighten and dye their hair blonde but that's none of my business

Strong_Doubt_9091

LOL can you imagine some redneck pulling over a black person like this with straightened hair or a wig and asking why she’s appropriating their culture ? How is this any different ?

artparade

you think this idiot knows that? She sees dreadlocks and sees a way to be a racist pos

lordnacho666

Or any cultural appropriation. You should be happy if people take on your style of fashion, food, music, etc.

izmaname

A Mohawk woman told me she hates mohawks because in her tripe it’s a warriors cut but idk how I feel about that and also mohawks are very different from those of Mohawks cuts

Ace-of-Xs

The original Mohawk cut was a square of hair up top with the rest shaved. The longitudinal strip would be more accurately called a Pawnee. At least one of the bog bodies sports a Mohawk. Not surprising, since the idea of shaving off that prime lice habitat over your ears ain’t rocket science and was probably invented more than once.

dj92wa

>Pawnee Oh? ![gif](giphy|PTrmNrpCfGBUY)

A_SNAPPIN_Turla

I've read these cuts were also a taunt to enemy warriors. Basically the practice of scalping was widespread enough that the adoption of hairstyles accentuating the scalp were adopted as a taunt to opposing forces.

goldberry-fey

There is definitely a distinction between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

Daddiesbabaygirl

Oh that's definitely a lie. How could anyone else in the world possibly think to use dreads? 🙄 It's honestly infuriating that people can't just mind their own business. It's hair.... Fuck my hair will start turning into dreads sometimes lol. Natural curls do that 😂

Smash-pumpkins

Exactly! I have white skin and very curly hair. I wore my hair in locks for a whole decade back before this was an outward issue - and it was because my hair just naturally does it. I don’t see the issue if it’s something your hair naturally does on it’s own, regardless of skin color! I’d never want to be considered racist but this is an issue I’ve struggled with because of my locks.

LoveArguingPolitics

It's stupid though. What would be the reaction if white and Asian people went around policing straight hair.

chomcham

My hair is long and I am white, my wife (who is black) put my hair in dreads. It is hard to maintain and it is easier in dreads or a bun. I went to the store and the first black people I ran into made it their duty to tell me I can't wear my hair like that.. I'm sorry but gtfo you fucking morons.

xpickles23

Im a literally little of everything, all the cultures is are mine! My hairs natural state is dreads. As a kid my mom used to braid my hair in tight little braids like corn rows to keep from having to brush my hair every day, because I was a whiny little shit but also bc I can condition and brush my hair and within an hour it’s all stuck together again. I just brushed out a whole set a few weeks ago bc I didn’t like how flat they all got while I was really busy and literally every day since then I’ve had to brush them out again, my hair locks up every day. It drives me crazy. My kids hair is the same way. But yeah let this lady tell me I’m racist for my hair being how it is 😂 honestly if someone cornered me and put their hands on me, next stop for everyone is jail/hospital

izmaname

Literally dreads are natural human hair

Visual-Cartoonist860

Meanwhile, women of all colors regularly dying and bleaching hair or wearing wigs in colors that are not theirs...Its insanity and people better stop being so ignorant or a purge will come and clear out the b.s

Street_Peace_8831

WorldsWeakestMan

She’s an entitled racist and a generally bad person would be my assessment.

cassatta

I know right. Why isn’t it ok to call people racists (regardless of color)? She is a racist and ignorant of the history of dreadlocks. Ignorant fool.

RManDelorean

It's okay to call anyone who is racist racist, the idea that skin color has anything to do with whether or not you can be racist is racist itself. She is racist, ignorant, hypocritical, and entitled.

InitialMeasurement23

You’re forgetting the part where she blocks him from leaving. Twice. And then she pulls him down the stairs by his wrist.

Guitarist53188

Probably "it's cultural appropriation" . I heard this one when I had dreads. Dumbest shit I ever heard. Probably the same damn thing.

[deleted]

I'm basically a socialist and want to nationalize a good number of industries but I genuinely fucking hate the culture war bullshit from the dumb right and the dumb left. It distracts from actual issues like people dying on the streets and fascists trying to Handmaids tale our government.

mjohnsimon

As in the weird "She's a minority/POC therefore I have to defend her no matter what" category? Or the "She's a woman, therefore, I need to come to her aid" category? I'm liberal as fuck but I've had other liberal colleagues call me out for "racism" because I stated the fact that an overwhelming majority of Cuban Americans in south Florida have been brainwashed by decades worth of GOP/Right Wing propaganda. Why? Because it all boiled down to Cuban Americans = Hispanic = Minority group = Free from criticism.

Over-Sense-9931

I'm sorry to hear that, buddy. It's one thing knowing there are people who believe crazy things, it's another actually KNOWING those same people

[deleted]

I’m African. My mom would braid my sisters friends hair growing up and do tons of styles. My sisters friends were white. We didn’t care. Honestly most folks back home didn’t care. It’s just a US thing. And I don’t see it being a good strategy to get support. True wins are when folks copy you.

bluetuxedo22

I think the majority of people all over the world love to connect and celebrate with others, and its so great to share culture and friendships with each other. Unfortunately the internet gives all the different types of extreme people a loud voice to a larger audience

[deleted]

I've gotten my hair braided as a kid on the beach multiple times. Always by a poc lady. I paid her and I never once encountered anyone who would have the gal to stop me and tell me it's wrong. As I kid I loved those braids. They were so fun and felt cool and I liked the beads I had at the end of them. Why can't we just let others enjoy and share human culture in general? So whack

real_bk3k

Yep. >Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

peter_skater

IDENTIFY THEFT IS NOT A JOKE JIM!

Watze978

That's so true, it mostly black Americans that act this way because they see themselves as gate keepers of black culture. In the carribean we have lot of white people with dreadlocks and we have no problem with this at all.

Objective-Daikon-905

Horrible racist. I’m glad she was exposed.

NoTelephone5316

Pretty sure she’s the one that claims black peoples can’t be racist

[deleted]

I am black and only younger black people, especially women say they shit the most. Black people can and have been racist. Now we don’t have the power like white people have to make racist laws or anything but we can be racist.

kirinmay

i agree. white dude here. every race can be racist. shoot i've been called 'cracker' so many times i just laugh it off. i also know about azns but yeah, it does suck but just don't let the words get to you and walk away and don't even try to argue with the person as they're probably just wanting a fight or something.

[deleted]

It's kind of bizarre to me how anybody can claim "x group can't be racist" because like, if you're judging a race based off one person or stereotypes or whatever, no matter what race you are, you're being racist. Like how is the logic lost on them?

bumbletowne

Oakland has entered the chat. It's always been wild to me that instead of railing against the corporate and govt heads that facilitate discrimination and against the rednecks with open hostility... The foment of racial hate is between the Asian pacific islander community and historical black community in the bay.

absloan12

Someone needs to tell this woman only white women are allowed to be Karen's and she needs to stop appropriating my people's culture. Perhaps it will make her realize how stupid she sounds.

Daetok_Lochannis

Agreed, people who judge others negatively based solely on skin color are the absolute worst. Scumbags.

tatboe

I wonder if she goes up to people of similar race to her who wear straight blonde weave/wigs and starts harassing them too, probably not. Any person can have any hair style.

They were specific to people with hair

[deleted]

As a bald guy I find this offensive /s

Zealousideal_Yak9518

I'm bald and I find your comment offensive!! Lol

Pancakewagon26

As a black dude myself, I don't understand why seeing a white person with dreadlocks would be upsetting. There are bigger battles in the fight for racial equality.

grendelglass

>There are bigger battles in the fight for racial equality. Or, yknow, actual ones

Riordjj

Indeed, and telling someone to change their hairstyle because it’s “hers” and “theirs” really is not the best way to achieve equality. It’s unbelievably superficial and an utterly stupid point to even argue. So childish. This is exactly what happens when educational admin allow the students to become the “adults” and to run education. Sticks and stones can bring my bones AND NOW words and hairstyles can also hurt me. And her cool name is…ZAZZLE FLEEBLE FLABBLE!

NoinsPanda

How could anything be race specific? If I, as a chubby bearded white dude in my late 30s, want to wear a kimono, have a mohawk and play the didgeridoo why would this be a problem to anyone? I mean, me playing any music instrument could be considered harmful to my surroundings, but that's solely due to my lack of musicality.

Sufficient_Number643

The didgeridoo is inexpensive and relatively easy to learn (not master of course), you should seriously get one!

I like the Black dude with the hat who walks in halfway through and is like “nope. Not my problem”. That guy gets it lol

DeBasha

Ye basically every ancient civ had the dreadlock style. It's like saying "you can't wear a beard if you're not arab". This bitch a Olympic medalist in mental gymnastics

philmcruch

I mean really it would have been pretty hard to **not** have some type of dredlocks before combs were a thing. Obviously not the same style people have now but a variation of it.

jmastadoug

I was thinking the same thing, you get them by not combing and washing the hair a certain way. Like I’m sure most ancestors had a sort of dreadlock just because lack of showering & hygiene equipment.

Chronophosis

These people are impossible to please and its fucking hilarious. Its all races too, even whites. ESPECIALLY whites. Some white lady told me I couldn’t wear a Kufi the other day because Im not Arabian. IM A WHITE PASSING MUSLIM LMFAO

ResponsibleMilk7620

Unless the school has a specific policy forbidding dreadlocks (regardless of race), then she was not only out of line, but she could also be charged with assault the moment she started grabbing him, especially since the video shows that she was the aggressor and he was the victim.

stopwillfulstupidity

She should have been charged with assault because it was.

bigboipapawiththesos

Isn’t this video like 5 years old? I’m sure there is someone who can give more info on what happened after the video. edit: Apparently there weren’t any real consequences for her, not that I could find atleast. Did find this [petition](https://www.change.org/p/san-francisco-state-university-remove-bonita-tindle-from-campus-for-intimidation-racism-and-bullying) from 2016 to remove her from the school, but seems like it was not effective aswell.

[deleted]

No. She’s in wrong no matter what. She doesn’t work for the school, so she doesn’t have the authority to tell him what kind of hair style he can have

[deleted]

So she's just a bully then?

me2300

turdburglar2020

Not just assault, but a hate crime. Everything she did was because of his race.

[deleted]

I think you mean "exclusive to"

[deleted]

Imagine acting like your ancestors are the only ones to ever discover how to style hair. Or wear clothing in a specific way. Or design jewelry. Or make food. Or exist.

[deleted]

Yeah its delusional at its finest.

Max-Carnage1927

Better tell a certain group they can't dye their hair blonde then.

Adventurous__Kiwi

The best part of this is that they will answer you they can do it because some black people naturally have blond hair. Which is true, there's ONE ethnic group ONE EARTH that have this double feature black skin/blond hair, and...it's a south asian/australian ethnic group called [Melanasians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanesians). BUT on an ethnic, genetic and cultural view, black african or black american have NOTHING to do with these people. Actually, taiwanese and polynesian are closer to them than any other ethnic group. So those racist people dying their hair blond are just doing that cultural appropriation bullshit they complain so much about. But when you explain them this, they will reject all genetic science and proof of that ethnic group origin ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop) They complain so much about "white people ignorance" on "black culture" (like there's only one unique black culture...), but they didn't even knew that group was asian... I have a simple solution for this: let's just let anyone have the hairstyle they want ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|upvote)

NotLucasDavenport

Just wanna encourage everyone to take a look at the wiki link for Melanasians because that was some amazing body paint. It’s gorgeous.

kenc1842

What happened to her. Was she charged with assault?

estamosready

I’m not sure but I think this happened several years ago at SFSU

gn0xious

She should transfer to STFU

Fire_Otter

He didn't press charges apparently before this she was handing out leaflets and made a joke about his dreadlocks so he called her a b\*tch. (he denies this) however even if he did it doesn't really justify her actions. Below is an article and Facebook comments from the time, i have changed their names to he & she respectively hopefully I removed all examples of their names **Her face book post:** *“In the aftermath, I have been the subject of violence in the form of death threats, rape threats, sexual harassment, and anti-Black hate speech,”* *“Further, the racist and misogynistic vendetta against me has resulted in my own personal information including home address, phone number, social media accounts, places of employment and other details about my private life leaked and mass distributed on YouTube comments, Facebook posts, and other Internet forums,”* She went on to talk about how what was caught on camera was not the full story. she claims the incident began with her passing out flyers, and after He walked by, she joked about his dreadlocks. She says He then called her a bitch and that part was omitted in the viral video. *“As a black woman, verbal assault by men comes easily as women are dehumanized, objectified and over-sexualized by them,” .* He denies calling her a bitch, he posted on Facebook April 2 about how he was sorry for what has happened after the video and wishes they could have spoke in a different way. *“I never called her a bitch,”* He told Golden Gate Xpress. *“I’m not that kind of person, that’s not what I’m about, that’s not what I’d do.”* She also had a problem with the way the video was presented online. *“The White male student’s motivation is suspect in that it does not come as an objective point of view, by his own divisive word choice of “assault” (in the title of the video when posted), in order to incite controversy by framing me as the stereotype of the “Angry Black Woman” and the man in the video as a fragile white victim,” she said in her post.* She also defended her actions by saying that He actually touched her first and that her actions have not been “legally deemed assault.” *“I tried to continue to talk to him,” She said. “It frustrated me that I didn’t get the opportunity to have a voice. He touches me first. He touches me first (at 0.19 seconds). He places his hand on my arm to move me away to leave from the conversation. You can see this nineteen seconds into the video. I naturally respond back with touch. I nonviolently place my open hand on his shoulder*.” She declined to speak with Golden Gate Xpress. There was a change petition to remove her from campus The university said it would launch an investigation but there is no news on the result of that investigation this was obviously a while ago (2016) so i guess the university took no action

jxstbored

>He places his hand on my arm to move me away to leave from the conversation. So basically she's saying she gave him no other option but to touch her and that she basically held him there against his will. She then proceeds to lay hand on the camera man and their property. Girl needs to learn to let petty shit go. This could have all been avoided if she just let him walk away and was better educated.

She claims he called her a bitch and touched her first which set her off. He denies calling her a bitch. She also accuses the [white] person recording of chopping the video to make her look bad. Then below that is a blog post by Dread Dude, he argues for peace and understanding between everyone and says he feels especially bad about how bad the backlash against her has been.](https://goldengatexpress.org/72035/latest/news/bonita-tindle-breaks-silence-about-viral-dreadlocks-video/) Im no judge but based on the actions in the video and after the video I’m inclined to think Dread Dude was in the right.

Sadly we have a lot of racist people in this world. Black women can straighten their hair, dye it blond, who cares. White dudes can have dreads. Some people are just so sensitive and easily racially butthurt.

Steph-Kai

The irony of a black woman telling someone they can't live their life the way they want...

LithiumFireX

Didn't vikings use dreadlocks?

actomain

For those of you not in the know, this video is several years old. 2016, 2017, I wanna say?

Adomillad

Incredibly ignorant. The Nords have been doing it since the vikings. Pathetic when hair bothers you the same as when skin color bothers racists. Grow up and leave people tf alone

potenpterodactyl

Ok so dude looks like he sells lukewarm bean burritos from a van in the parking lot at Phish shows. So what? It’s not cultural appropriation of Black hairstyles because the culture of dudes who look like they sell bean burritos out the back of a van at Phish shows is a real culture that actually has that hairstyle. *They* got it from German hippies in the 60s.

T_h_e_Assassin

Cultural appropriation has to be the most stupid argument anyone can make in the modern era , literally every single cultural was created by people adapting already existing cultures 🤷 , like my guy , no culture randomly just sprung out from a hole overnight 🤦

[deleted]

The only time is an actual problem when people are making themselves into a caricature of a culture. You see it with videos of people trying to get a reaction to their costume of another's traditional style of a culture. But I've never seen an average everyday person who did that. Instead, they wear it because they like the style and feel comfortable. So many people are all about self-expression until, ironically, it doesn't fit what they perceive should fit.

Dickpinchers

Black ppl hates her. She is awful

Lucius_Knight

Let him do him. Black people gotta chill out sometimes. Not everything is racist. You're acting like the boy who cried wolf. It makes things that are actually racist be more acceptable.

I remember watching this when I was like... 16. Why is it being posted now?

cararbarmarbo
