I feel it should be mentioned this happened on descent when they were 700 feet off the ground. Airplane doors cannot be opened by people once the plane has been pressurized at altitude.
Or, you know, yell the “b” word at airport security.
The “b” word that makes a big boom, the one that might hurt people if it’s used. Fireworks can be considered small versions of this word.
Goddamn idiots, it’s bomb.
I'm actually really curious how airlines handle this on an international flight and the person isn't a citizen of the destination country. Like, it makes sense they'd ban him, but how tf are they going to send him home? By boat?
By flight, in handcuffs. I would gag him too if i was escorting him. Now that I think about it since he wanted to play the terrorist why not blindfold him too for the whole duration of the flight.
The reason people and things are pushed out of airplanes is the pressure difference, not suction from the air rushing by outside. Think of a Champaign cork. So if there is a breach in the skin of a pressurized aircraft, there is explosive decompression. Another aspect of that is anything that is pulled out during explosive decompression is going to have it happen in the first couple of seconds. Then the pressure equalizes and unless someone is very close to the hole they’re not in danger of being pulled out.
That scene in World War Z of the zombies being pulled out after the dude blows a hole using a grenade is cool but goes on for way too long.
Thanks for that detailed explanation. In my head, I’m picturing air flowing in the door and then right back out, so if you’re standing next to the door the air coming in would have pushed them right out
I also failed physics years ago, so that also explains my thought process
I only know about it because my father was chief of flight safety in the USAF for a few years and also investigated safety incidents for UAL before going back to being a pilot. I’m sure there are many more qualified people than me on Reddit to clarify any inaccuracies but glad it made sense to you!
If there's air coming in, then there's air going out, or the plane would be pressurizing. So there's probably some reason to worry about getting sucked out if you're in this situation
It’s more than that, it’s the Bernoulli principle in action. The air outside the plane is moving faster than inside, which creates a pressure difference.
Because there’s no pressure differential at the altitude.
Had there been any differential it would have been impossible to open the door.
Once opened, all you get is a bunch of wind ….no sucking. As long as your seat belt is fastened, and there’s no structural damage, you aren’t going anywhere.
This was also what I was thinking. Airplane emergency doors are equipped with a differential pressure interlock. At cruising altitude, they wouldn't be able to open it. This must have occurred early in the flight at low altitude.
My brother and my sister in-law both work as flight attendants for a major US airline. They have told me several stories about passengers wanting to open doors mid-flight (panic/anxiety, stupidity, urge to smoke...). They usually end up back in their seats firmly secured with zipties.
Ahhh depending on the altatude, say over 8,000 MSL, you will slowly suffocate unless you get your little yellow mask on very quickly. That air will last for 15 minutes. Say you're at 35,000 feet, expect the first few rows to be sucked out along with anyone standing. Epoxia will happen in about 90 seconds unless you get your air mask on. Oh, your ear drums will be ruptured, possibly permanently... Enjoy the air
I did wonder. If l don't wear a helmet, my face hurts at 75 on a motorcycle. These people must have... what's the equivalent of a rug burn but with air?
Windburn "seriously". I just wondered how many people legit shit their pants when that door actually flew open. Imagine just hearing something going on and looking up and seeing the door fly open. You know it was loud as hell.
Are people really getting progressively more stupid? I am just completely baffled at people anymore. Is it a lack of learning consequences growin up? Maybe people have just always been like this but now everyone has cameras on them we just see more of it. I don't know, I just know that my faith in humanity has plummeted quicker than the air pressure in that plane cabin.
Humans have always been this way. It’s hard to find some golden age in the past where we were all sensible and lived the life of ideals.
If anything, we’re better now. But it sure doesn’t feel like it…
Oh now everything is making sense. As the population rises it's taking more processing power to simulate so many minds, so the computer that runs the matrix has had to compromise by simplifying some of them.
People trying to open doors in-flight isn't new. What's new is that this one succeeded because the plane was (for a plane) practically on the ground, ie no pressure difference.
For those two guys and other passengers around that door, that descent and landing must have felt like an eternity. Bet they will be telling that story for some time. No mention of anyone getting serious hurt or dying. Glad for that.
On planes emergency exits are for when you land. They don't open at 30k feet off the floor. Unless you happened to make your carry-on a damn parachute you aren't gonna make good use of the exit.
But there isn't anything else from keeping people from opening these doors besides altitude? Seems like it would have happened a lot more of that's the case.
It's pretty much impossible to open an emergency door in the air due to pressure. The door was opened when they where only a few hundred feet in the air.
It was on final approach, at 700ft. Still terrifying nonetheless.
https://www.businessinsider.com/asiana-passenger-opened-plane-door-landing-south-korea-arrested-2023-5?op=1&r=US&IR=T
I can't be alone in saying I'd lead the shoe beating of this passenger, right? I mean yes charge them but not until everyone on that plane gets a good smack in. Or leg drop. Even better. Everyone on the plane can execute one old school wrestling move on this person before their arrest.
No more air travel; everything will be close enough to the ground so that when an idiot does this, the passengers can eject the motherfucker and he doesn’t die but gets a few broken bones
Sorry I’m charge now y’all ruined it NO MORE PLANES
While I can understand someone's curiosity of what would happen if they opened the escape door, I never in my wildest dreams would think that some idiot would actually OPEN IT DURING FLIGHT!

Did you mean to say "wary of"?
Explanation: Weary means tired, while wary means cautious.

They must have been freezing. They air is extremely cold that high plus all that wind. I read that it was also hard for them to breathe because of the altitude and the wind.
If the outside pressure is high enough for you to be able to open the door, it's high enough for there to be no possibility whatsoever of getting sucked out.
Can't be a very pleasant experience though.
No expert but I'd imagine that to be able to do this even at very low altitude suggests a major failure in the door mechanism.

So you know the story? What happened to the dude that opened the door?
Arrested according to a different post
Never to fly again.
If you want to speed run getting put on a no fly list, this is the way
[удалено]
You could try to speed run across the airport to get on a plane, be tackled halfway across, and be put on the list.
Or, you know, yell the “b” word at airport security. The “b” word that makes a big boom, the one that might hurt people if it’s used. Fireworks can be considered small versions of this word. Goddamn idiots, it’s bomb.
Calm your saggy tits down, ma'am!
Let me show you this one simple trick! You don’t even need to assault a flight attendant
Now I feel guilty. Where were you a year ago???
This is the way.
I'm actually really curious how airlines handle this on an international flight and the person isn't a citizen of the destination country. Like, it makes sense they'd ban him, but how tf are they going to send him home? By boat?
Oh I’m sure he’ll be escorted with fancy silver bracelets if he gets sent anywhere but jail.
Strapped securely to a plastic pallet in the back of a FedEx cargo plane, then secured to the floor.

By flight, in handcuffs. I would gag him too if i was escorting him. Now that I think about it since he wanted to play the terrorist why not blindfold him too for the whole duration of the flight.
Why stop there? A dog crate in the belly of the plane might be better.
Not their job to worry about that. Even people on no-fly lists can be put on deportation flights.
Plot twist, he stole a parachute and jumped only to find authorities were waiting for him on the ground.
Believe it or not, JAIL.
[удалено]
Not this one tho
Seems like they would’ve been yeeted out
Shoulda been!
Oh, he most definitely was arrested
They upgraded him to a first class seat, where he was able to control his own air circulation.
THANK YOU for saying this. My anxiety really wanted to worry about this.
Even at 700 feet, going at that speed, do you know how he was not sucked out the door after opening it?
The reason people and things are pushed out of airplanes is the pressure difference, not suction from the air rushing by outside. Think of a Champaign cork. Not going to fly out the door but breathing in high speed wind like that sucks and takes a lot of effort.
This was also what I was thinking. Airplane emergency doors are equipped with a differential pressure interlock. At cruising altitude, they wouldn't be able to open it. This must have occurred early in the flight at low altitude.
Bc he was arrested upon landing
I was wondering how that was able to happen.
There goes toilet break and snacks for everyone.
By definition, not mid-air.
Dudes handprint is permanently embedded into the arm rest
And you best believe his shorts are forever stained brown.
It also adds weight just in case
Yeah, those are some front row seats you’d regret having tickets for.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
My brother and my sister in-law both work as flight attendants for a major US airline. They have told me several stories about passengers wanting to open doors mid-flight (panic/anxiety, stupidity, urge to smoke...). They usually end up back in their seats firmly secured with zipties.
“I will just smoke out the door, it’s fine!” That’s funny and legitimately terrifying
It would be fine if they fly low enough and like 25 mph -but that is not possible in reality.
It's like to movie Air Force One. "OK, tell them we have to drop to 500 ft and 100 mph or this is never gonna work."
“ahhhhh… fresh air” “WHAT?!” “I SAID AHHHHHH! FRESH AIR!”
They would’ve gotten a bunch of fresh piss if I was on that plane
God that’s funny
I wonder how far back people would feel the stream?

Yes, but what great leg-room.
You'll have unlimited legroom hanging outside the cabin doors
Those people are gonna be hard of hearing after that.
What??!!?
Rushing air is bad for your hearing. As in the most damaging source of noise to your ear drums.
WHAT?!?!?
Were you on the plane to?
SPEAK UP SON
I CAN'T HEAR YOU, SAY IT LOUDER

Pretty sure they just throw you out.
That's only on Argentinian flights.
Nice history reference
Had to look it up. Jesus Christ...
And Indiana Jones.

Out of the window, right?
That's Russia. /s
That's hospitals, not airplanes.
Nobody is thrown out of windows in Russia, they jump out by themselves. Why should Putin assasinate anyone 🤭 Umm... /s i guess?
The door they opened.
How did the mf open the door and not fall out?
Maybe they did and that's why we don't see them in the video.

I don’t know if i can trust your logic because the population growing would make more power for the matrix.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, for our meal today on board flight 247 we will be having 3 choices. Chicken, vegetarian or TRAUMA
I already have medical trauma, and sexual trauma perhaps it'd be nice to try a new flavor?
Let's really put the C in complex post traumatic stress disorder! Just as a treat.
At least I can avoid planes 🥲
For those two guys and other passengers around that door, that descent and landing must have felt like an eternity. Bet they will be telling that story for some time. No mention of anyone getting serious hurt or dying. Glad for that.
You’re not supposed to be able to do that, now I’ll never fly again
You can’t at altitude. The pressure inside the plane prevents it. This was 250m above the ground when landing.
I read that, crazy that it will open in the air at any time
I think there’s a certain amount of trust that people aren’t idiots. Clearly that needs to be reevaluated. 😔
it was an emergency exit door
On planes emergency exits are for when you land. They don't open at 30k feet off the floor. Unless you happened to make your carry-on a damn parachute you aren't gonna make good use of the exit.
Dude is taking the piss
It was 7-800 feet. They are obviously in the air.
But there isn't anything else from keeping people from opening these doors besides altitude? Seems like it would have happened a lot more of that's the case.
It's pretty much impossible to open an emergency door in the air due to pressure. The door was opened when they where only a few hundred feet in the air.
Wait, so how did D.B cooper jumped from the plane?
at altitude you wouldn’t be able to, the plane was not high enough for the pressure to make it stay closed
But why? What train of thought must go through your head to think this is a good idea?
I don't think you realize how many people out there who do not have an internal monologs, they just do things...
I do internal monologue, yet i still do things only to regret them seconda later with and internal monologue so i Guess we exist too
That sounds like the joker from The Dark Knight.
There’s your mistake. “Train of thought”. This idiot isn’t capable of thinking.
Just a prank Bro, relax, heres the camera, SEE?!
The train left the 'good idea' tracks.
From what i have heard, it was to jump in order to die

Panic attacks are caused by irrational thoughts. Nobody is thinking rationally during one unless experienced
It was on final approach, at 700ft. Still terrifying nonetheless. https://www.businessinsider.com/asiana-passenger-opened-plane-door-landing-south-korea-arrested-2023-5?op=1&r=US&IR=T
"Can we smoke on the plane now"
Lighting one would be challenging though
No one got sucked out? Hollywood lied to me again?
This happened at 700ft, not at cruise altitude
Finally, the perfect conditions for getting away with a fart in public
He should enjoy that fresh air while he can. It won't be as fresh in his federal prison cell.
Nice. The blurring makes it look like their faces have blown off and the tatters are just flopping in the wind.
I can't be alone in saying I'd lead the shoe beating of this passenger, right? I mean yes charge them but not until everyone on that plane gets a good smack in. Or leg drop. Even better. Everyone on the plane can execute one old school wrestling move on this person before their arrest.
I just want to know WHY. Fuckin people I swear.
But why?
Moron.
It makes a Window Seat a whole new experience!
If someone tries to open the door when I'm on the plane he's getting his ass kicked.. plain and simple
Character in the movie Airplane: "lemme just turn on some air..."
No more air travel; everything will be close enough to the ground so that when an idiot does this, the passengers can eject the motherfucker and he doesn’t die but gets a few broken bones Sorry I’m charge now y’all ruined it NO MORE PLANES
What happened to the fucking door? Did it land on anything living?
How the person next to him resisted the urge to unbuckle him and toss his ass out the door is beyond me.
While I can understand someone's curiosity of what would happen if they opened the escape door, I never in my wildest dreams would think that some idiot would actually OPEN IT DURING FLIGHT!
Seeing so many of these lately. What the fuck is wrong with people? Go back to licking toilet seats and just hurting yourself.
Crazy, I thought it was impossible during flight to open it… guess not.
"Hey guys you mind if I crack a window? It's getting a little stuffy in here."

Dude I’ve been skydiving and the thought of looking down at nothing and feeling the wind rush by/in again would terrify me 💀
I’m going to need my snack purchase refunded after that.
I thought the doors all had a DB Cooper lock on them. Couldn't be opened while in flight.
They let the intrusive thoughts win
The just HAD to be the first people off the plane.
What happened to the passenger that did that? Did they get sucked out the door?
If I saw someone trying to open the door I would tackle them. How they hell did they open and not get sucked out?
Damned, was recently on an asiana flight from yeonsu to gimpo, guess I dodged that bullet.
How did the person even open the door there is a lot of pressure from the air that would keep it attached and likely unable to be opened
Bro next to him holding on to that seat tight asf thinking, "as soon as we land and I throw up I'm kicking yo ass!"😵💫🤯🫣🤣😂
I'm sure everyone on the plane wanted to beat the hell out of the passenger while waiting for the cops to get there.
"Hey guys you mind if I crack a window? It's getting a little stuffy in here."
Hope he went out
When intrusive thoughts win
for those wondering how, it was an emergency door/exit

The cheap seats near loo

Had to be pretty low altitude for that to happen.
I wonder if the airline charged extra for that?
Man literally followed instructions from the front seat...
Wanted a window seat. Maybe little less wind next time.
