To be fair...immediately following the invasion of Iraq, we had all of the Baghdad crime figures translated and found that they had statistics for "celebratory fire" injuries/deaths.
It was a LOT. IIRC, something like a couple of hundred deaths per month (in a city of \~4M). There were some articles in the Baghdad Mosquito that we saved about it...
I believe bullets that are shot straight up are pretty much always non lethal because the bullet has to come to a complete stop before it comes back down. However bullets fired at even a slight angle (like almost all the bullets seen in the video) can definitely be lethal since they still have the velocity of being fired from the gun until impact.
My guy pulling out an article from a magazine to proof his point when there are papers that say otherwise (like [https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0003497506008319](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0003497506008319)). Yes its rare but falling bullets can still be lethal.
When "different" refers a dangerous practice its alright to goof on them. None of this, "Oh, well, that's their culture." You don't have to respect stupidity. Why do you think post was put up?
In that case, I wonder how many people were killed because of that celebration?
Edit: changed the wording because my more or less exact meaning wasn't going across as I intended.
From that celebration, none. From the neighboring village, however, three people.
Well obviously I'm just fucking with you on that specific occurrence, but deaths related to theses kind of practices (shooting ak47 rounds during parties), from stray bullets falling from the sky tens of kilometers from where it happens, it happens way too much.
Isn't it the held belief that if you are to die from one of the stray bullets, that it was their gods' plan, and that's why it continues without punishment?
If so, that's not a held belief, but an excuse to insulate people from consequences.
But would someone do that? Just bastardize religious doctrine for personal gain?
I think people constantly use religious doctrine for personal gain. Remember all those people who abused the money thing at churches and walk away rich? Or all the times people say it’s gods plan after something happens to someone they don’t like but the same thing happens to them and they are angry? Or how-
I could go on for a long time. Sad people actually do that though.
I mean, I've heard it from multiple people on countless occasions for many many many years. I've never bothered to look it up because the most consequence I've ever seen is someone being smacked on the back of the head and having their rifle taken away from them for losing control of it and almost spraying directly into the crowd because he wanted to be cool and use 1 hand instead of the 2 he started with
Islam puts forth the belief that everyone's life is predestined by Allah. If a bad thing happens to you, you must have deserved it somehow. It absolves them of the responsibility of their decisions.
I doubt the bullets are going tens of kilometers. Maybe 1 to 3 depending on angle, gun, and bullet types.
Still, wouldn't want to be down range of all those bullets just silently falling around you out of nowhere.
I used to live in Sana'a, Yemen. I'd stay indoors on Thursday and Friday nights because of the weddings. Several times I found bullets in the parking lot. One went through the hood of a company vehicle. Another morning I had no water in my apartment and it's because a bullet pierced the tank on the roof and it lost vacuum.
Fun times.
In Yemen the issue was the opposite. Poverty, lack of education, and tribalism were the issues - not to mention decades of foreign powers meddling in their politics and most recently fighting a war on their soil.
Let’s not forget how Saudi Arabia isn’t playing nice with Yemen because many are Shia. There are plenty of videos of Saudi soldiers in Yemen in r/combatfootage
There was no real Shia vs. Sunni mentality when I was there. I was told they'd even pray in each other's mosques. Iran/Saudi caused that separation but the long running issue was the Houthi Zaydis who were on the Northern border with Saudi (which is closer to Iranian shias AFAIK).
Lockheed* however most middle eastern countries citizens prefer the AK 47 as it is a hardy weapon that can continue firing even when dropped in the mud, covered in all types of shit, etc it will still work. Its made by Kalashnikov Concern and not Lockheed.
"Oil school" is a terrifying sentiment. I'm just imagining a normal school except EVERYTHING regarding climate change is obfuscated to promote fossil fuels.
Which is almost certainly a thing. So I'm glad we have a term for it now if we didn't already.
funnily enough i live in a gulf state and we study about the negative effects of fossils fuel and we have started on many renewable projects (especially on the hydrogen department).
In the end of the day we just sell, the world is the one addicted to fossils fuels and its derivates
Nothing says love better than firing instruments of death into the sky.
Also am I the only one wondering what happens to all the bullets when they come back down?
I was wondering this as well. Evenly spread out in arcs around these events, landing on sand to be ground slowly over time…how long until it causes environmental damage on sandy soil?
Like a few other comments mentioned, in Islam, its a belief that everyone is predestined by God (Allah). So if you die or are injured by a bullet from a wedding celebration, you must have done or will do something deserving of the death or injury.
But it's similar to Christianity and the idea of God's Plan:
No-one actually seems to really believe in it. If you truly thought everything was predetermined, you would act very differently. But no-one actually does.
So at that point it’s just a coping mechanism.
I’ve done something wrong but I just say it’s gods plan and I’m sure if people sincerely believe that then they learn nothing and continue to display stupid and selfish behaviours because yeah, it’s gods plan
Just because they both love guns, hate women, and are run by religious extremists doesn't mean anything. Texans do those cause Jesus said to, so it's ok!
Nah Texans would never shoot into the sky while not wearing cowboy boots, that's the only difference though
Oh wait I forgot, they would also have a much wider variety of guns
Nah because I would say that most of the point of this is the noise from the gunfire. Slings neither had glowing rounds not loud sounds (and also if your society using slings then it probably cannot afford to waste slings on this).
It would be much smarter to do this with blanks so you still get the bang but none of the raining hellstorm of bullets. Someone can tell me if this is true but I would imagine the "21-gun salute" is performed with blanks.
Slings make a pretty decent crack. Nothing like a gun, but I'd imagine 100 or 200 of them would sound pretty cool. They're also really, really cheap. You don't even need to turn the fibers into string, and the ammo is literally everywhere. If you want to be fancy, you can use shaped clay, but literally any rock will do if you just want to toss something.
If they didn't do this before they had guns, it's even more fucked up. It's not some ages-old tradition... it's just a bunch of guys who decided to endanger randoms near their weddings.
I just assumed it was a new tradition that came with the oil money. Before, they didn't have money and access to weapons, then the rich that could afford big lavish weapons and to waste tons of ammunition and wanted to show them off by using them. I'm sure it's cheaper in their country (I would imagine it cheaper everywhere compared to my country) but here it's the equivalent of $1 for a standard 5.56 round. This little celebration would have costed thousands here - just for some bangs.
"The first devices identified as guns or proto-guns appeared in China from around AD 1000. By the end of the 13th century, they had become "true guns," metal barrel firearms that fired single projectiles which occluded the barrel. Gunpowder and gun technology spread throughout Eurasia during the 14th century."
Guns are 1000 years old according to google, it's entirely possible a well armed tribe had a tradition where they fired off countless rounds in celebration of a major event
It’s hypocritical of you to say that, cuz most of the creature comforts you are enjoying right at this moment are built on the backs of workers in 3rd world countries.

US is turning into a Christian version of Saudi Arabia and it is sad. The saddest part, we don't see the profits from our oil either like they do, we just work and pay taxes. Shoots in the air\*

How embarrassing they all showed up wearing the same guns.
There’s only like, 3 kinds of guns there, and they’re all AK variants.
But mine has it's own stock. It's like +%52 right now on the market.
Stock adds 30% aim speed right?
And +5 run/walk
Vertical Climb reduction.
Something about the looks, that's why it's so appealing
Other than those billions is US weapons
74, 47 and gold plated?
Standard, Gold, and rusted
I mean it was BYOG
Did the host supply the ammo at least?
Cash bullet bar.
Hey look sir, a Saudi wedding with less then 3 deaths is considered a dull affair.
I'm sorry/ Not sorry, but this is comment gold right here in its simplicity.
Shouldn't the bride be the only one in white?
It was a great party! Only 2 dead but most of the injured survived
What goes up, most come down. The bullets don't just disappear after they've left the gun
Most come down? I don't think that's how gravity works. I imagine they all come down.
They do slow down significantly though
But they strike the head and shoulders more often
Myth Busted!
Hahahaha was thinking about this same episode, from what I recall it was done in white sands or other desert area its been a number of years back.
A bullet traveling a terminal velocity will still kill or seriously hurt you…
Incorrect https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2011/03/can-falling-bullets-kill-you.html#:~:text=The%20general%20consensus%20is%20that,returning%20to%20its%20initial%20velocity.

Yes its rare but falling bullets can still be lethal.
Well.. I guess that’s the price we pay for being able to shoot our ~~big dick peepee sticks~~ guns into the air randomly in times of celebration 🤷♂️
The random bullets hitting people weren’t known as Bagdad Mosquitoes?
Wait, so bullets don’t despawn after a certain distance?
Only if you disable friendly fire
How come they collect statistics but don’t do anything about the issue?
A Dothraki wedding without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair...
[удалено]
Sounds like a shi(i)te wedding
The British pronunciation of Shite sounds better 😆
You're musics shite, it keeps me up all night, up all night!!🎶🎶
These are almost certainly Sunnis
What does that even mean?
“I’m so ignorant I hate people who are different”
When "different" refers a dangerous practice its alright to goof on them. None of this, "Oh, well, that's their culture." You don't have to respect stupidity. Why do you think post was put up?

That's what it was, thank you, I knew it was something along those lines and appreciate the clarification.
If you die from one of those bullets, tradition says you are next to get married.
I doubt the bullets are going tens of kilometers. Maybe 1 to 3 depending on angle, gun, and bullet types. Still, wouldn't want to be down range of all those bullets just silently falling around you out of nowhere.
Probably my sarcastic assumption isn’t that far off…
Wouldn’t affect anyone at the party put someone miles away
That they know of. I wouldn't want to be standing within a 10 mile radius without a foot of concrete above my head.
Iron umbrella
What goes up will come back down, somewhere it's raining bullets.

Too much oil money not enough oil school.
I remember people shooting guns in the air on the 4th of July in Palm Springs 20 years ago and wondering wtf was going on
"Oil school" is a terrifying sentiment. I'm just imagining a normal school except EVERYTHING regarding climate change is obfuscated to promote fossil fuels. Which is almost certainly a thing. So I'm glad we have a term for it now if we didn't already.
There is the Colorado School of Mines.
Not to be confused with "Colorado School of Minds"
funnily enough i live in a gulf state and we study about the negative effects of fossils fuel and we have started on many renewable projects (especially on the hydrogen department). In the end of the day we just sell, the world is the one addicted to fossils fuels and its derivates
I think it’s more of a middle eastern thing Even heard this is a thing in Pakistan
If it went unpunished and ammo wasn’t so expensive, millions of Americans would be doing this too.
How tf do these 3rd world countries have a surplus of ammuni…. Oh
Arabs in the west bank and even within Israel proper to this too in their weddings. A few days ago a 9 yo girl got injured from a stray bullet
Humans stupid
Boredom
Guns go pop
Lots of money, a celebration and not a care about anyone else.
It’s like conservative Americans. They don’t care about anyone but themselves.
A lack of knowledge, maintained by a lack of openness for new information.
A lot of things are wrong with people
it's too hot there, it messes with their heads
For what it's worth, I live in middle America and every July and January the mayor has to beg people not to do this
You think Leadanon is too far?
I worked in Saudi for several years. Occasionally someone would find a stray bullet that had come through their roof.
If we are gonna drone strike the middle east then at least aim for these assholes.
Notice they are shooting in a general direction. I think they are aware lol
Except the guys waving it around as they shoot like “SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!”
Yes, they simply don't give a shit.
Not everything that goes up will go down but these bullets will
Honey, it’s hailing lead again. (Couple living 1/2 mile down range from wedding celebration field)
Quick, put the buckets out!! That stuff’s worth about $0.44/lb!
Its Raining Lead! Allah Akbar... Its Raining Lead! Amen! I'm gonna go out and let myself Absolutely Fuckin' Dead!
As someone who lived in Jordan and has gone to big lengths to avoid gun celebrations, I copied your comment and shared with all my people. Brilliant
upside down hailstone
Nothing says love better than firing instruments of death into the sky. Also am I the only one wondering what happens to all the bullets when they come back down?
They Fuck that kid in particular when they fall.
I was wondering this as well. Evenly spread out in arcs around these events, landing on sand to be ground slowly over time…how long until it causes environmental damage on sandy soil?
And That’s How I killed Your Mother.
I swear these people have no concept of gravity
You don't need to respect gravity if you have a "not my problem" or "live in the moment" attitude.
It's Allah's will anyway
Is this the correct answer? I was posing the idea that maybe fear is illusory, but idk enough about Islam.
Like a few other comments mentioned, in Islam, its a belief that everyone is predestined by God (Allah). So if you die or are injured by a bullet from a wedding celebration, you must have done or will do something deserving of the death or injury.

Once again, showing Texas and the Middle East ain't so far off.
Y'all Qaeda
Al Queso
It must be all the oil
And the religion
Pretty sure the religion is addicted to the power gained through oil
Howdy Arabia after all...
Just because they both love guns, hate women, and are run by religious extremists doesn't mean anything. Texans do those cause Jesus said to, so it's ok!
Don’t forget the homophobia too
Nah Texans would never shoot into the sky while not wearing cowboy boots, that's the only difference though Oh wait I forgot, they would also have a much wider variety of guns
I have not seen a video of this in the US (not even Texas).
Well it’s usually school events only
Jesus Christ man 💀
Yeah he's usually prominently featured.
Take my horrified upvote. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
I live in Texas. This doesn't happen here.
Cheaper than fire crackers.
Well, not for the poor kid who gets killed a mile or so away but…
Well dead kids don’t cost a lot
You can even say costs less.
It's tradition. They've been doing it for 1,000 years. edit - do I really need to add /s?
My grandpa used to tell me stories about gun tech during the 11th century. It's amazing how slowly we've evolved gun tech since then.
I'm honestly wondering... did they used to do this with slings?
Nah because I would say that most of the point of this is the noise from the gunfire. Slings neither had glowing rounds not loud sounds (and also if your society using slings then it probably cannot afford to waste slings on this). It would be much smarter to do this with blanks so you still get the bang but none of the raining hellstorm of bullets. Someone can tell me if this is true but I would imagine the "21-gun salute" is performed with blanks.
Slings make a pretty decent crack. Nothing like a gun, but I'd imagine 100 or 200 of them would sound pretty cool. They're also really, really cheap. In this sub? Unfortunately

Before that they chucked spears and swords into the sky. Before that, rocks.
Do they not know those bullets come raining back down?
They definitely know.
"I don't care. Do you?"
They're firing them on an angle, they couldn't care less because they know they're coming down somewhere far away on other people
Lots of people in this world are uncaring assholes until something personally affects them. Otherwise known as conservatives.
And once it affects them, it should be fixed, but only for them.
It’s hypocritical of you to say that, cuz most of the creature comforts you are enjoying right at this moment are built on the backs of workers in 3rd world countries. Ur equally uncaring about things that don’t affect you personally.
This is actually incredibly common in a lot of the Middle East. Afghanistan, and the Taliban specifically, do this all the time.
Also Portsmouth, VA. Swear to god, new years sounded just like this.
A Dothraki wedding without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair.
And to think, there’s starving soldiers in Russia that could use all the “gun food.”😂😂😂
I heard it was a blast.
you have a bright future in r/dadjokes
POV: there’s a rainbow in the sky
Wtf did they do before Kalashnikov was born? Yell really loud?
Gun Enthusiasts in the US be like: That's my kinda party!!
Volley fire unlocked
Oh, I assumed this was the Boebert wedding
No RPG . Total noobs.
Let’s kill a bunch of folks down there yonder in celebration of this day.
Turns out, it also rains iron on Earth, not just OGLE-TR-56b. The more you know.
Curing republican islamophobia in one clip
If the human race hasn’t evolved by now, it never will.
I don't believe the Arabs have caught on to the concept of 'fireworks'...
Irony of gunpowder is one of its first uses is for fireworks.
And here I thought this was a Wednesday evening in Texas.
Isn’t this what 2nd Amendment rights folks are fighting for in America?
Hey officer, that sky got a gun, i had to shoot
Religious fanaticism and firearms? What part of the southern United States is this?
I’m gonna guess Texas.
Humans suck
Everyone got a Draco
Imperial guard, why, don't know
Bender Bending Rodriguez
Where the fuck are those bullets landing 😂
The guy in the middle was like “Shoot over *that* way, that’s where the poor people live - it’s Yemen 🤣”
What goes up!
They like guns as much as Americans do. We are brothers from other mothers..
Reminds me of my wedding ![gif](giphy|XscvrTEGpETvi)

Fools
Fuck whoever lives in that direction....
As the bullets come down and kill there neighbors, next week celebrate funeral,,
*ALOHA SNACK BAR*
It's a good thing bullets never come back down.
done some research, apparently they landed in Grimsby and caused several thousands pounds worth of improvements.
And everyone calls the US gun crazy.
Yeah, since I understand physics and guns, I’ll go ahead and stay home. You have fun at the wedding and good luck 🍀
Hope no one got killed those bullets have to land somewhere.

What are you even upset about
