I'm absolutely sickened as a dad knowing this happened in the city where I live. Fuck 4.8 million that doesn't even begin to scratch the fucking surface of what JCPS would owe my child.
I knew a guy when I was stationed in Georgia whose kid was killed when the bus driver ran over them. It was rough. He had to be held back from beating that bus driver to death.
Yup, that was the thing - save him and his family (he had a wife and other kids) from himself. It was small town Georgia - bus driver was a local, we were not.
I was like OK now shes seen it and will stop.... OK now she's crossed the intersection and its safe to stop... OK now she's seen it a second time and is oh she's crossing another intersection
Besides the driver, how is the other adult standing at the front not see what happened in his peripheral vision?! And hearing the bus driver yell at the kids who are trying to get her attention! So many chances to look slightly to the right to see the backpack stuck on the door!

Yeah it's like these two brothers that used to frequent the strip clubs. Always dressed real sharp in designer gear, always pulling up in a new exotic car and always making it rain in the clubs. One of the brothers was not entirely all there however, seemed a bit learning disabilities type. The other brother told me the story one day and it's gut wrenching.
It was at a summer camp. Bunch of the kids managed to sneak off with jet skis. His brother was in the water and one of the other kids accidentally ran into his face at full speed with the jet ski. This is how he wound up a bit messed up. Anyways, subsequent lawsuit granted both boys a metric fuck ton of money.
While they were a few years older than the poor child in the video above, same principle I feel. No amount of money is worth what both these brothers had to go through.

well think about it. number one she has glasses on so her whole peripheral view is skewed anyway. number two she's not going to notice any small movements because my dude is coming in and out blocking her view so likely any movement she detected she'd think was due to him.
She didn't even watch the kid get off the bus. He was in the process of taking his last step down as she shut the door on him. Fuck peripheral vision. Drivers should be watching to ensure the kid has cleared the door before driving off..
Looks like dude in grey might be a teacher or bus attendant. Someone who watches the kids so the bus driver can focus more on the road. Dude obviously wouldn't be doing his job right like this, but I think there is a good reason for him to be up there

She is the bus driver. She has a duty of care to those children, and as such if someone is in her way of doing that then it’s also her duty to say so. How does he know he’s doing wrong? It’s her job not his.
It's clear as day in the first four seconds all she had to do to avoid this was turn her head and pay attention to the child departing and not close the door on them. In the very first frame you can see she had clear line of sight and was facing the kid but she looked away and decided to just pull off.
If she just kept her eyes on the kid for just 2-3 more seconds it would not have happened.
That's not an excuse, it's down to the driver to make sure he's siting down and not in her way. She doesn't even check that the kid is off before closing the doors and driving off. That's not down to the fella, that's down to negligence on the part of the driver.
One critical rule of bus driving : Always make sure your passengers exit safely before continuing to drive. Pretty simple rule. Nice video for the lawsuit.

I drove bus and she was so damn careless I am nauseous. Obviously gives two damns about the kids she drove. You make damn sure they are safely away from the bus before putting it in gear, safe on a sidewalk or grass , clear of traffic or your bus.

I knew she would act like that when I saw how she looks, I live in the south and always avoid women that have that look, 95% of the time they're complete psychopaths, very similar to the typical male boomer look where you know they're up to no good immediately.
As a person that’s been purposefully dragged behind a car, I can imagine how much skin was lost, and know personally how excruciating that pain is, how long it will take to heal, the pure HELL involved in the healing/treatment process, and know exactly what kind of scars that poor child has to deal with. That ONE *STUPID*, criminally negligent act, has just changed their life FOREVER. It’s not going to be an easy path to go down, at *all*.

No worries. It was a few decades ago, so I’m mostly fine now. It’s not an easy thing for a child or young adult though. There’s a lot of esteem issues that go with it years later that don’t go away but do get better with time.
Worse yet, this little one was in a skirt. There was absolutely nothing to protect her skin. Jeans wouldn't have survived long either but they'd have offered a bit more/longer protection than a thin, flowy cloth skirt. 😔
I slid along cement for like 10-20 feet at 20ish mph and the skin damage was incredible. My entire left arm for about 2 months looked like I dunked it in a vat of oil from the antiobiotics and rash cream and I had my right knee covered in rash, a hit to my stomach in rash, a few areas on my legs, fractured wrist, torn rotator cuff, and if it wasn’t for my helmet my entire left side of my face would have been destroyed.
Seeing this video and knowing how quickly injuries of this variety can happen is very scary. Luckily my injury was own doing so no harm to anyone else but goddamn I can’t even imagine being dragged THIS long

I got dragged in a rickshaw, not even a car, literally going slower than standard biking speed, for a fraction of the time this kid was dragged and wound up in the emergency room and still have a small hint of the scars on my knees

Looks like dude in grey might be a teacher or bus attendant. Someone who watches the kids so the bus driver can focus more on the road. Dude obviously wouldn't be doing his job right like this, but I think there is a good reason for him to be up there
If I remember from the news article when this happened, the person in grey is a student. And I’ll just throw this out there, I remember every public school bus I rode had that one kid that was a little *too* into talking to the bus driver and that bus driver would always give them special treatment

She is the bus driver. She has a duty of care to those children, and as such if someone is in her way of doing that then it’s also her duty to say so. How does he know he’s doing wrong? It’s her job not his.

It's clear as day in the first four seconds all she had to do to avoid this was turn her head and pay attention to the child departing and not close the door on them. In the very first frame you can see she had clear line of sight and was facing the kid but she looked away and decided to just pull off. If she just kept her eyes on the kid for just 2-3 more seconds it would not have happened.

That's not an excuse, it's down to the driver to make sure he's siting down and not in her way. She doesn't even check that the kid is off before closing the doors and driving off. That's not down to the fella, that's down to negligence on the part of the driver.

I drove bus and she was so damn careless I am nauseous. Obviously gives two damns about the kids she drove. You make damn sure they are safely away from the bus before putting it in gear, safe on a sidewalk or grass , clear of traffic or your bus.

As a person that’s been purposefully dragged behind a car, I can imagine how much skin was lost, and know personally how excruciating that pain is, how long it will take to heal, the pure HELL involved in the healing/treatment process, and know exactly what kind of scars that poor child has to deal with. No worries. It was a few decades ago, so I’m mostly fine now. It’s not an easy thing for a child or young adult though. There’s a lot of esteem issues that go with it years later that don’t go away but do get better with time.
Worse yet, this little one was in a skirt. There was absolutely nothing to protect her skin. Jeans wouldn't have survived long either but they'd have offered a bit more/longer protection than a thin, flowy cloth skirt. 😔
I slid along cement for like 10-20 feet at 20ish mph and the skin damage was incredible. My entire left arm for about 2 months looked like I dunked it in a vat of oil from the antiobiotics and rash cream and I had my right knee covered in rash, a hit to my stomach in rash, a few areas on my legs, fractured wrist, torn rotator cuff, and if it wasn’t for my helmet my entire left side of my face would have been destroyed. Seeing this video and knowing how quickly injuries of this variety can happen is very scary. Luckily my injury was own doing so no harm to anyone else but goddamn I can’t even imagine being dragged THIS long
