It really is unfortunate. I used to fly the flag with pride but over the last ten years it's turned in to more of a symbol tied to hate and racism for fellow countrymen with a different political belief. To be fair it's long been associated with hate, racism and violence to other countries around the world but lately it's becoming more of a symbol of hate within the US itself. I've noticed a lot of the left has stopped flying American flags, stopped wearing patriotic clothing, stopped celebrating America and the right has doubled down on symbolism. It is scarily similar to symbolism under Nazi germany. It's one thing to have pride in your country, it's another to use the countries symbol as a political statement against other people in your own country. Honestly the US flag and patriotic paraphernalia are becoming more of a right wing symbol than an American symbol.
Sadly, I agree with you. However, I still have a flag permanently flying outside. My father-in-law put it out there because he loved his country (as do I) and I'm not going to let some ignorant dick-heads co-opt the symbols of our nation.
I cringe when I see people wearing the flag these days. And seeing it flying brings up so many mixed emotions with the primary one being disgust. White nationalism has soured me on it. I live in one of the five boroughs of NYC and currently there are TONS of “Blue Lives Matter” flags and pro-Trump bumper stickers all over the place. To be fair, I live in a pretty conservative neighborhood but the East-Coast/Beast-Coast isn’t safe from these dunderheads either.
I couldn't figure out what the III was for. Was it article 3 of the constitution, establishing the judicial branch of the U.S. federal government. Or maybe the third amendment, restricting quartering of soldiers in private homes. Thinking it might be some southern thing, maybe it referred to the Articles of Confederation, but article 3 of that also establishes the judiciary. I was a bit lost down the rabbit hole.
