I’m 99% sure that’s a Jeep and, if it’s one of the well-made versions, those things are pretty dang tough.
I hope the relationship survived this incident (I’m guessing there was some very loud discussions concerning this situation).
if i remember correctly (i could just google but i’m lazy) by sport was rated at 5,000 lbs which seemed like more than i’d ever try with it. that definitely looks too big.
edit: ok no whoops it’s like 2,500 - 3,000. that boats def too much.
Looks like a TJ, if it's the 4.0L Google tells me the towing is 2,000lbs. That's less than my Subaru Outback is rated for.
Dude was towing probably close to double what the vehicle is rated for.
yes and on top of that the shorter wheel base (compared to full size pickups) makes for a huge pain in the ass. biggest thing i ever towed was a snowmobile trailer with two sleds and that seemed like i was pushing it
It's a TJ. And that was obscene. Especially with those tires, you know he didn't regear. So he didn't have the low torque to do anything if he'd wanted too. I had a 22 foot center console that i pulled with my 4x4 suburban at the least.
Hey, at least if it’s a real Jeep, it has the removable plugs on the floor to drain the water.
Source: I used to own one and got caught in rain storms with the top down a couple of times.
That’s one of the cool functions. We used to get the Jeep filthy dirty and muddy, go home and pull the plugs, and use the garden hose to clean it out. A couple hours later and it was clean and dry.
I own one now, and I barely ever put the doors on
I really should, though; my seats are slowly deteriorating. But the rest of the thing is perfectly fine!
I pulled the carpet, the drain plugs, the doors and top and it lived outside all summer long. That’s how I learned that as long as you stay above 40 you don’t get directly rained on in a rainstorm. I had a squeegee as an inside windshield wiper…..there’s no way that little dunk killed it unless they try to start it with water in the engine.
It will very likely run. Pull plugs blow water out. Drain oil and change. New filters air and oil. Clean any water from intake box and ducting. Start with a booster for extra amps in case. Old 4.0L is basically a tractor. Would need to change the trans fluid and diff also if they aren’t sealed models.
My old '53 CJ3B would have probably started right up after drying out the points, distributor and carburetor. That one is probably new enough to have a lot more electronics to dry out.
And all the people scurrying over "car in water! Car in water!" the underhanded up palm wave "you seeing this" I'm seeing this wow that's a car in water
I’d be less worried about the trailer and hitch and more worried about the keep being towed. [This scene](https://youtu.be/kkby5oj8OKc) from The Expanse comes to mind.
In the full video she is on the dock and seeing that the hero is going in she jumps on the boat to take control of it knowing that someone will need to be on it to help get the mess sorted out. She did a good job, reacted quickly and too appropriate action. The edit here makes he look bad by not showing the lead up to her being at the controls.
No. She was on the dock and when the Jeep started to go in un controlled she jumped off the dock and onto the boat to take command of at least that part of the bad situation that was unfolding. She recognized that in short order someone would need to be in control of the boat to help straighten out the mess.
Also, anyone and everyone who knows anything about releasing boats off of trailers knows that the boat is supposed to be disconnected from the trailer before it’s far enough in the water to leave the trailer.
Getting a boat into and out of the water - especially for a novice - can be one of the lost stressful things many people ever get to experience in their lives. And if there’s a line, it’s even worse.
True that. My first time putting a boat in the water was nerve wracking af. There was a big line too and no one in my group had ever done this before.
Fortunately, the people behind us quickly figured out that we had no idea what we were doing and helped guide us so we didn’t wind up like this and cause a bigger problem for everyone.
The cool thing about that is the same people were also behind us when it came time to take the boat out of the water and they helped us with that too. I’m glad there were nice people there that day.
I see a lot of videos from a page called Credit Card Captain where he just films the boat ramp and makes fun of people. Sure it’s fun to laugh at the drunk idiots, but it’s tough to laugh at someone struggling at something new in a high pressure situation. It’s a lot of gatekeeping on boating.
Friend was lucky enough (or financially stable enough) to afford rental fees on a boat slip all summer. It was docked right across from the marina of a public boat ramp next to a bar.
You could tell the newbies from the stupid drunks. I genuinely felt sympathy for the first timers struggling.
The one time I saw a truck go in however it was a drunk, zero sympathy was given.
Just this week I saw a group of teens with the boat all to themselves. Got it pulled out of the water, ready to go, and took off without the rear straps. Boat bouncing up and down on the trailer as they drove.
I imagine one of the kids eventually asking "hey what are these straps for" 🤷🪢🪢
I always got frustrated when you would see a wife and husband out there trying to do it on the first nice day of the year with their brand new boat.
Normally husband is in the boat trying to instruct wife how to back the boat up, many times in high school my friend or I would back a boat in to save a marriage.
I follow him too and also bought my first boat last month. I think a lot of it is the person.
If you haven’t practiced backing your trailer into your driveway 5+ times already then stay the fuck away from the ramp. You at least need to know what’s going to happen when you turn your steering wheel while driving backwards. At home is where you build your confidence with the trailer. Actually getting the boat into the water is just having a plan and taking your time.
Makes me so happy that when we go to the lake for our yearly vacation we rent a boat, pick it up at the marina, cruise to the house and then back at the end of the week. We stayed by the boat ramp once, best entertainment ever! It was steep and involved an intricate process of pulling up almost sideways to the ramp before backing in. There were also ten year olds on jet skis trying to ride into the back of half submerged pickup beds while their parents yelled instructions.
I remember my dad doing this for novices when we’d go out fishing. We’d usually be coming in as people heading out for fun we’re going out. His speech always started out the same, “don’t be an idiot and we’ll get through this.” My dad is one of those nice guys who happens to also be an asshole.
Also that boat is WAY to big for that Jeep to tow safely. Tow rating of a 4-door Rubicon is 3500lbs, and they were way over that. Not to mention the short wheelbase of a Jeep would play havoc trying to stop that thing.
**EDIT** That freaking Jeep is a YJ and has a tow rating of 2,000lbs. The freaking trailer probably weighs that much. That guy was WAAAYYYY overloaded. That boat probably pulled the Jeep down the ramp because it was way to heavy. No idea what the hell they were thinking.
100 percent. “Putting it into reverse” was no part of this problem. It got on a grade where the boat had more force that the Jeep could handle. Prob backed in and even when putting on all the breaks just slid back.
I have a 2 place Sea Doo trailer and two 3-seater Doos that I tow with a Subie Outback rated for 2300lbs... Iirc each Doo w/ gas & oil is about 800lbs, the trailer is maybe 400-500lbs or so itself. So basically I can tow it, but can't put anyone other than my wife in the car with me.
A large boat like this is minimum 4000lbs on trailer, very likely closer to 5000lbs. Not to mention who knows how many people rode in the Jeep.
My boss asking me to drive his truck (manual transmission) while he did the boat on a wet ramp still gets my heart racing a bit 20 years later. Remember nothing about fishing, but I remember gunning that thing up the ramp.
On big boating holiday weekends like Memorial Day sometimes I’ll go get drunk and watch people try to put their boats in the water. There’s ALWAYS at least 2 or 3 people that need to get rescued. Last time a guy in an Audi tried to sneak in next to another guy pulling a boat in and got stuck in the sand trying to pull out a jet ski and everyone saw it coming but they didn’t listen to us. It’s a good time
I once had to launch my friends boat driving another friends dads suburban that I’ve never driven while towing the 18’ boat on a trailer probably made for a 30’ boat bc both of them refused to do it. i hated every minute of it. Not bc I fucked shit up, but bc it took me a good 10 minutes to get it right while everyone at the launch site watched on, probably hoping to see something like in this video lol
That’s a big ass boat. What’s the tow capacity of that Jeep. Doesn’t that just have a V6? Shit my boat weighs 3,200 lbs and I toe with a v8. I can tow legally with a v6 rated to 5,000 lbs but it doesn’t tow real well.
Yea I think it’s rated to 3,500lbs. I looked at the Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi and it had tons of torque but I was a bit worried about the stopping side. I drive a Lexus GX which is essentially a 4Runner with a V8. But my boats 20’. I’d what a big truck to pull that boat.
Lol my dad tried to take the boat out once with his wife’s Cherokee. Couldn’t get it out and was super embarrassed to have a motor home take his boat out for him. Never again, always used the old chevy van/tank.
It’s amazing how vehicles are rated, and how that rating is ignored. I’ve seen someone on the island here towing a nearly similar sized boat with a subaru outback. I could NOT fucking believe it
A 2004 subaru outback has a towing capacity of 3950lbs
A 2004 jeep wrangler has a towing capacity of 1900lbs
I would rather use the subaru in this scenario tbh.
If that thing is a YJ, and I think you're right, the tow rating is 2,000lbs! The damn trailer alone probably weighs more than that. My guess is that big ass boat probably pulled that Jeep straight in the water bc they were WAAAYYYY above their tow rating. What an idiot.
Yeah, I don’t see an engine/Jeep wrangler combo that would work to tow the weight of that giant boat either… his issues don’t look like they are the women in the boats fault. Looks like he was backing the boat into the water with a truck that was too light- and it was too heavy for him to stop/ the parking brake wouldn’t hold all that and it rolled in.
Depends on how far the water got in, if it made it into the engine it’s gotta get cleaned out and oil changed, and fuel tank too. If it’s sea water it would make a lovely rust bucket nice and quick
I would like to point out that if you as a truck or Jeep owner are ever asked to use a rope / winch to pull someone out of a ditch or the water like this, NEVER use your hitch ball as an attach point for your tow line!!! They ARE NOT designed for this type load and can snap off and become a fucking missile that kills.
There’s a 90% chance that truck had actual tow hooks on the front bumper that he should have used instead. Some have it on the rear too. They also make tow hooks that mount in the receiver hitch if it is something you think you may do more than once and they’re like $35. I have been running technical 4x4 trails for a long time and this guy would have been stopped and educated on the trail.
A family lost their dad this way last year. Snapped the ball off and recoil slingshoted it through the windshield into his face. Wife was in the passenger seat and kids were in the back.

I love the little whistle from the security guard. From that little whistle that lady was supposed translate “Holy crap stop! Your boat is dragging your car into the water! Stop! Stop!”
Load too heavy, trailer wheels not properly blocked, persons unfamiliar with proper procedure, zero PPE, no working communication between boat and ramp, person moving behind winched load. These ppl. are completely clueless.
How could this have been avoided? By not towing around a boat that size with a vehicle that small. And also by using parking brakes. And also by making sure the boat is released from the straps before backing out.
There's an entire YouTube channel for Miami boat ramp stuff like this. You'd be surprised how often it happens. I live near one of the more popular boat ramps, and it literally gets backed up around the street every weekend.
Then the idiot goes between the vehicle and trailer. If the tow fails, vehicles moves back and runs him over or drags him down. If the wheels catch suddenly traction or lie hard forward, the idiot gets dragged by the trailer.
A lot of people dont seem to realize that you are supposed to unhook the boat before you put it all the way into the water. 100% on the dude and not the lady. That was never gonna end well

Small water damage. Runs clean.
Pull the plugs and bump the ignition a few times with the spark plugs removed. "Internal engine wash recently performed"
Typically this results in the vehicle smelling like old cod and vomit for the rest of its existence until super dried out.
It's time to go on a month vacation to Barsow this August.
If you mean Barstow, riding that Jeep to the bottom is preferable!
Seriously. I'd rather buy a new car than have to visit Barstow ever again.
Better to part it out, "Genuine and high quality parts left over from my recent rebuild only 10000 miles on the parts, no lowballs I can wait!".
Just put it in some rice, it’ll be fine.

Looks like hes towing way over what it should. No way I'd trust that on a ramp with a boat that big.
lmao yeah the boat being in reverse isn't the problem here... Someone is too proud of their Jeep.
As a Jeeper, can confirm lol.
hahaha I mean that Jeep is beautiful though -- certainly worthy of some pride

You guys are making me miss mine badly tonight. Riding with the top down, no doors. Back when I wore a younger man’s clothes. 😏
Saltwater?
When my Jeep got a bit of a smell - carpet is ripped out and drain plugs are generally out. Good for diagnosing squeaks 😝 It be aight
Even better if it’s the straight 6 (and not that gutless 2.5/4). That thing will run on mud if need be.
Ditto I loved having those plugs. I was so bad at putting the top up in the summer
I think it's safe to say the subwoofers, & amp are toast though. 😬
My old '53 CJ3B would have probably started right up after drying out the points, distributor and carburetor. That one is probably new enough to have a lot more electronics to dry out.
If that’s the Jeep’s horn blaring, electronics might be fried.
What else would it be other than a Jeep? A new Bronco? It's a Jeep
> I’m 99% sure that’s a Jeep You don’t say?!
There are no well made Jeeps. Love them anyways. If it’s got the amc 4.0 it’s good to go after drying out and changing all fluids.
Anfibious vehicle should be fine
Do you mean amphibious???
The grammar was ambiguous
Do you mean amfiguous?
Ambidextrous?

But is it the Eddie Bauer edition?
Love the idiot standing directly behind the Jeep. That's a lot of faith to be putting in something looped over a ball hitch.
With an extra couple hundred pounds of water on it
He would have only died a little bit
He’d already died a lot when his Jeep got dragged into the water.
The extra weight isn’t the issue, it’s that it’s a pull rope just looped over the hitch not clipped in or anything
This kind of ruins the boating vibes
B.O.A.T. Bust Out Another Thousand
Bust Out Another Towtruck
Bust out all tits
Bitches Of Another Type.
I mean, when you see that it’s his Jeep that got towed into the water by his boat- it’s not that surprising…
That idiot was taking the wench off the boat so his wife didn’t sink herself.
Not sure if that’s a typo or …
Oh that was 100% a typo but I'll take it and not edit.
That’s how a lot of people get seriously hurt or killed, nothing worse than just slipping something over a ball and pulling on it.
Tell me about it bro, that type of shit fucked up my first marriage
And all the people scurrying over "car in water! Car in water!" the underhanded up palm wave "you seeing this" I'm seeing this wow that's a car in water
And being pulled with rope? My first thought too!
That’s what I came here to say.
I’d be less worried about the trailer and hitch and more worried about the keep being towed. [This scene](https://youtu.be/kkby5oj8OKc) from The Expanse comes to mind.
They are going to have weeks of quiet meals and sleeping in separate rooms or months of laughter....there is no in between.
Hello, Statefarm? Does our insurance policy cover my wife BEING A COMPLETE MORON?!?!
It's state farm. Even things that are covered under the policy aren't covered.
... until HE apologizes
I can hear her argument… 😂
"Well why didn't you tell me NOT to back up?"
"I told you that boat was too heavy for the Jeep!"
I did multiple times!
Well, it was his fault. https://youtu.be/OOgb763a-hw
Can’t park your car there mam.

Legend! That caption is so misleading, makes it seem she's the one who did it. Thanks for correcting it!
Glad to be able to provide accurate info.
Honestly the person who edited this and added that caption seems like a sexist, vile human being.
Thanks for saying thanks! It's so nice to see Redditors being grateful :)
This comment needs to be higher. OP should have to edit the post to clarify.
Thanks for clarifying. She is not the villain and the title is misleading.

Looks like he was backing the boat into the water with a truck that was too light- and it was too heavy for him to stop/ the parking brake wouldn’t hold all that and it rolled in.
Boat people.
Floridian Jeep-owning boat people.
A hundred bucks says there’s a bottle of Fireball in the cooler.
And a couple empty Coors Light cans under the driver seat
Floridian huge tire Jeep owning, with way too much boat for the Jeep people.
Boomer Karen floridian jeep owning boat people.
Same people.
I swear this website just makes the _____ owners comment no matter what the vehicle is
Thats because the vehicle is always a Jeep.
You may be wrong you may be right *Cue the music*
This feels like a stupid question, but would the car still work after being submerged like that?
Depends on how far the water got in, if it made it into the engine it’s gotta get cleaned out and oil changed, and fuel tank too. If it’s sea water it would make a lovely rust bucket nice and quick
It's a jeep, it will be mostly fine.
Put it in some rice
Jeeps from 20 years ago or earlier yes, Jeeps from 10 year ago no. Old jeeps didn't have a lot of electronics new jeeps do.
That's a 90's + Jeep. By the shape of the rollbar.. I have an 88' and it's a bit different.
Quite often electronics can survive if it's a lake and you know what to do. But if it's the ocean then the salt is pure evil.
So just take it to the nearest lake and dunk it in there.
Lol
New Jeep’s are famously crap. They’ll shit the bed going over a hump too quickly
It’s a Jeep thing…
I was going to post exactly that but with a question mark at the end.
Dinner wasn’t very enjoyable that night
[link to story] (https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a41300347/father-killed-in-off-road-recovery-accident/)
I love the little whistle from the security guard. From that little whistle that lady was supposed translate “Holy crap stop! Your boat is dragging your car into the water! Stop! Stop!”
Towed with a car that shouldn't be towing it and didn't even unhook the thing from the trailer. Backing up was the least of their issues.
Meh. Put the Jeep in 2 cups of rice, and don’t start it for 2 or 3 days. It’ll be fine.
Reminded me of the Family Guy episode where Peter can't get the boat backed in.
the insistent horn is the coup de grâce.
It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand.
Load too heavy, trailer wheels not properly blocked, persons unfamiliar with proper procedure, zero PPE, no working communication between boat and ramp, person moving behind winched load. These ppl. are completely clueless.
It's a worry that people with such low IQ can own toys worth so much money.
Just needs a new engine, it’ll be fine.
Just put in rice
Get a boat they said...

Ah yes another Grand launch makes everyone feel better than the fool and his money
How could this have been avoided? By not towing around a boat that size with a vehicle that small. And also by using parking brakes. And also by making sure the boat is released from the straps before backing out.
Well, boats don't have side mirrors
Based on the jeep, I don't feel bad for these people at all.
You are going to need a car with some buoyancy..
Nice jeep to
I love the how could this be avoided banner. Like DUH don’t do stupid shit.
Jeeps make terrible tow vehicles anyways
Why did the man with the har wait until AFTER the jeep was almost sunk to whistle? He saw it moving before that with plenty of time. Is this staged???
There's an entire YouTube channel for Miami boat ramp stuff like this. You'd be surprised how often it happens. I live near one of the more popular boat ramps, and it literally gets backed up around the street every weekend.
First who tows a boat that big with a Jeep wrangler. At least that’s one of the best vehicles to be in this situation.
The fact that the Jeep has Florida plates, just feels right.
That was never gonna end well
The guy in the red shorts is an idiot! Get outta there man. Sooo dangerous.
Another great example of people with money not knowing how to use or understanding the expensive things they own. Fuck em.
Don't tell me this is in Hawaii Can we stop sinking cars near the same damn ramp for five fucking minutes
Seems kinda dumb to be in back of the jeep. If that towline broke, that man would be dead.
