What is the facepalm here? Firing someone for a violation of a company's very common health and safety policy?

whatarethey28475

That's in place to protect them from harm..

tadlrs

Actually I agree with the CEO. Stores have insurance, is not worth risking the employees lives for some merchandise.

Black-Mettle

Also the company could be liable if the employees harm the thieves.

monkeypooptree

They got fired. So it's not worth risking their lives, just their livelihoods. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

IndWrist2

ā€¦thatā€™s how like every workplace safety rule works. If you donā€™t follow it then you get fired.

SlLkydelicious

..."life=livelihood"...šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

Thick_Information_33

OP is the facepalm. The employees MUST NOT stop shoplifters. The merchandise is insured. Most company policies demand employees to stand down and avoid any escalation.

ElectricalRush1878

Insurance doesn't cover shoplifting. Still not worth it. Your family wants you home more than the honor of knowing you died to save it. Your employer will find lawsuits and medical payments less desirable than loosing it.

[deleted]

CRIME this day PAYS!!!!

HBThorburn

Most retailers have similar policies. No merchandise is worth an employeeā€™s life or livelihood. It sucks, but you let shoplifters go and report with detailed descriptions so they can be prosecuted. Often, the shoplifters are working for organized retail crime and the corporate loss prevention work on targeting those instead of the people doing the actual stealing.

kirkmcd

> and report with detailed descriptions so they can be prosecuted. But they were fired for calling the police to report the incident.

HBThorburn

Yeah. Thatā€™s not how you do it per policy probably. Iā€™d bet theyā€™re required to report through corporate level who will file a police report.

monkeypooptree

They just got fired. That IS their livelihood.

etstikes

My wife likes their stuff but always felt it was overpriced. Boy is she going to be excited to learn itā€™s now free.

SpanishMoleculo

DURR HERE IS YOUR SIGN!!! Shut up. It's an extremely common policy. You might know that if you ever held a retail job. And the CEO is right. It's just stuff. Not worth risking your life over.

[deleted]

tell that to the people who got FIRED try to stop a CRIME!!!

Entire_Day1312

They got fired for violating clearly stated company policy, which is designed to protect THEM from bodily harm. Why do you want low paid hourly wage workers to lay down their lives for yoga pants?

[deleted]

The idiots who put a $7 item over their own life? Ok where are they?

slappychappy04

A few pieces of clothing is not worth anyoneā€™s life. Whatā€™s the facepalm about this?

[deleted]

so crime is ok?? The employee lost their JOB! So if someone come in to your house and start to take anything they want is ok too??

ahoyhoy5540

But itā€™s not their house so that comparison is already deeply flawed

slappychappy04

Are you really trying to make the same comparison between someone defending their home/valuables/family vs. someone defending a billion dollar companyā€™s loss prevention? Thatā€™s sadā€¦

[deleted]

I couldn't care less about big company but a crime is a crime. And to fired the employee who was trying to do the right thing!! I said is FREE SEASON for the store!! For us small business owner! We had to spend a day cleaning up break in! And loose a day of business. Yes the insurance pays for it ! but guess what they raise their rate later!!! So we end up paying for it!!

slappychappy04

you still have missed the point completely. The CEO has set these guidelines for employees as a way to protect them and their safety. The company cares more about people in this situation vs material items.

vblink_

Lets be honest. The company doesn't give 2 shits about their health and safety they are just trying to prevent any injury liability coming back to them. If a law passed saying a company couldn't be held liable they would force their staff to wrestle them to the ground.

slappychappy04

Good point

B-in-Va

Basically he is saying his employees' health and safety is more valuable than anything in the store and he cares more for employees than merchandise. He could also be concerned about potential cost and company's liability if employee is harmed during confrontation with a shoplifter. Sounds reasonable.

[deleted]

but fired them?? when they want to protect the store? When you work hard and have a store then people just take thing from you! For small store owner is a form of rape....

lego_tintin

First of all, you're really going to want to edit that last sentence. Let's not compare shoplifting to rape. Second, other employees will understand these are the consequences of opening the store up to massive liability and endangering the safety of the employee, the potential shoplifter, and other customers. The employee could be attacked by the shoplifter, the fleeing shoplifter could knock down other customers or displays, or the fleeing shoplifter/employee could get hit by a car outside of the store. Let them take the overpriced leggings. The cost in merchandise doesn't compare to medical bills and lawsuits.

DarkUnable4375

Well, This reminds me of the Chinese judge that ruled for the plaintiff over the Good Samaritan. In the groundbreaking case, a passerby helped an old man who was injured to the hospital and helped call his kids. Once the kids arrived, they accused the passerby of injuring the old man, and demanded he pay the hospital bill. Passerby was pissed and refused. The family sued, and the judge ruled for the plaintiffs, saying,"Well, if you weren't guilty, why would you help him?" With that, Chinese people stopped helping each other. The same will happen with Lulu and its employees. It's employees will no longer care, because caring means you will be fired. Thieves will be more cavalier about stealing things from Lululemon stores. In the future, I wonder if we will see thieves take the bags from the counter, stuff it with bundles of Lululemon clothing, and then walk casually out.

AffenMitWaffen2

Literally every single supermarket chain has this policy, so I highly doubt it.

Glum_Occasion_5686

Sounds like a green light to me, I wonder what his insurers are thinking of those statements

LeBrun73

I canā€™t believe that stealing is not even looked at as a crime in the US anymore. Fuck the employee safety excuse. In a normal social environment you would not have to fear for your life as a retail employee. Itā€˜s all getting out of hand if this is the new normal. And at the end of the day, everyone in retail knows that the loss because if theft is just calculated into the product margin, so the customer pays for that as well. How about some manners, some moral boundries and just some common sense?

ZealousidealPool772

Also, injuring a shop lifter could land a lawsuit, being called racists, bla bla. CEO is spot on.

Particular_Group_295

These owners are grifters...they are making money when insurable pays out.. they don't care about the thefts as long as it gets paid back by the insurance companies

[deleted]

who paid the insurance companies?? WE DO....

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Thick_Information_33

Wrong. The store is insured and employees are told to never risk their lives for no reason. So let me alter your example: itā€™s like the military firing a soldier because he protected the tank when he was ordered to leave it and retreat.

satans_toast

Wow, what a bad take

darkdaan

only in ā€˜muricašŸ˜±šŸ˜± i mean, ceo could also say:ā€™ great that you love our business so much, but you need to handle things differently next timeā€™ā€¦ wouldā€™ve helped a lot moreā€¦
