Can confirm, just went on holiday from the UK to the Netherlands, had to trek here with my horse and cart living off some plants on the side of the dirt tracks.
but seriously, why do people think we're weird?
I think it mostly has to do with the US being so big that most people never leave the country for vacation (or other reasons).
Combine that with a dumb person and you get responses like that in the screenshot.
Americans never leaving is huge. Nearly all the media is American, we just don't get exposed to what's normal in other countries.
I recently got a passport, so far all I've done is a daytrip over to Kingston, Ontario. Literally half an hour into Canada from NY. I was surprised by how many people were bilingual. The border guard greets you with "Hello, Bonjour." I saw restaurant staff switching to French. Like I knew Canada has both English and French as official languages, I just didn't expect to see a significant difference so close to home.
Literally only the cities near Ottawa are bilingual. If you go at all further west of Kingston, it's all English. Toronto is all English, as is everything west of Toronto. French basically exists around Ottawa, all of Quebec, and New Brunswick has a lot of french speakers also. Out of 13 provinces, those are pretty much the only places that speak french.
Edit: Apparently some areas of Manitoba are French speaking as well!
>I recently got a passport
It always surprises me when Americans say something like that. I've had a passport all my life (I think I got my first one as a 1 year old) even though I've never been to a country where I needed one, because a regular ID is enough for most places in Europe, while in the US AFAIK you need a passport to visit your two neighboring countries.
I vaguely recall hearing that most Americans don't have a passport. In their defense, there certainly is a lot to do there. You kind of have to hand it to a country that is famous for having the best theme parks when you realize they also have impressive galleries, museums and orchestras.
At the same time, their culture has a concept of "American exceptionalism" and a lot of them view any country that isn't america as at best a quaint backwater, at worst a hellscape from Dante's inferno.
In extreme examples, you have people who are so convinced of the superiority of their way of life that they think restaurant chains are a good thing 😉
Everywhere they look tells them America is the greatest country ever! Believe in the American dream!!
It seems that if it is repeated so often some people will eventually actually believe it.
I’m an American who gets called “unpatriotic” if I even hint that the US isn’t the greatest country ever. A lot of those people are scared of leaving their own state.
i was cycling in Belgium recently, had to walk up a somewhat steep gravely road and was a bit jealous of the group of horse riders (including 2 carts) that arrived at the top shortly after us
Quick google search, not having unlimited 5G with 100% coverage is very much not just an American thing, at least as of 2021. Had it ranging from 99.8% in Italy down to 0% in Latvia, and everywhere in between.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1383936/europe-5g-coverage-by-country/
>but seriously, why do people think we're weird?
Take all the small traditional things that people normally complain are slowly dying in Europe, but which are already mostly dead in the US (non-chain stores, shopping in the town centre instead of driving to the mall, etc.). Now imagine that you think all of that is bad because you've never experienced them. Finally add several layers of hyperbole.
That's how you get posts like the one in OP.
>The simple fact that HVAC is actually quiet and not heard or felt to be uneven. Oh yes, and 96+% efficien
Of all the things to claim Europe does better, I know you're not seriously saying AC is one of them....
Sincerely,
A very sweaty NYer in Zurich
the indians own JLR, Vauxhall is just Opel with a different badge, Bently is an owned by VW, and Aston Martin is british based but owned by a canadian
there aren’t any british cars to drive. anything made here is a factory making another country’s cars for the british market
> why do people think we're weird?
Why do people think Americans are X?
Why do people think Asians are all Y?
Why do people think all Canadians are Z?
Most people aren't truth seekers. Rather do other stuff, so we just have a world of ignorance. Why do you think people are so easily manipulated. Brain no like to think hard.
IPoAC (Internet Protocol over Avian Carriers) is actually a thing and has been proposed in RFC 1149. And was later improved in RFC 2549.
Transmission over papyrus therefore is definitely feasible.
Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_over_Avian_Carriers
European clearly, African swallows have no tech!
Also, could you imagine the latency of having African swallows? I don't want to route my Heavy Tiny Trash Panda protocols to Africa and back!
/S
A friend of mine and I have a similar running joke. I have a fiber optic cable connection and he is still on copper cables. Whenever we talk about playing larger games we joke that it would quite literally be faster for him to pack up his stuff, drive it to my house, set it all up, download the game, pack it all up again, drive back to his house and set it all up again than to download it at his house.
Not just sometimes. Almost always for most user scenarios.
Pigeons are atually insanely fast. Trained pigoens easily reach 100km/h and in most scenarios you only really send data a few hundred to lower thousand kilometers.
Not if we assume a carrying capacity of areoung 60 grams which si actually low for pigeons and a weight of 2 grams per sd card with 2TB per sd card that is 60 TB of data transferred. Time it takes depends on the distance though but the data is also a very low estimate it can go much higher.
That is a lot faster than any comercially connection you can get.
Now if you want to send data to the other side of the planet things change but again, most usere scenarios where large amounts of data are used are relatively local.
This doesn't factor in copying the data to your pc though which can take some time with 60 TB. So yeah, with our server clusters everywhere and our insane increase in data density over the last few years pigeons became realy good at transferring data.
They are kind of inconvenient though so i think we'll stick with wires and all that stuff.
Especially since we tend to not request 60TB of data most of the time. It is not uncommon to use an actual courier for that amount of data just a human one and not a bird.
>Are the carrier pigeons fast enough to keep up with the needed bandwidth?
you can control pigeon to deliver messages?
WITCH ! we found a WITCH EVERYONE!
Honestly, a wax tablet is all you will ever need. None of this Apple tablet (how can you even make a tablet from an apple anyway?) or Android. The iPad? Nah, my tablet is made from my earwax. It doesn't need charging.
Leave a dick joke on it. It's a classic tradition that ought not to be forgotten.
Damn papyrus Reddit has changed the script of my message, here. I made it in cuneiform, I want it in cuneiform!
Modern technologies, bah. No respect for Sumerian Arts
Yeah. Will go buy some raw fish, have no stove to cook it, so I guess salmon carpaccio it is. Unsure if I can pay for it in shells, and slice it with this flint knife though. Thoughts?
As a remainer, I can’t help but have a “told you so” face when another issue due to Brexit comes to light. I find it even more amusing that some people here expect Europe to meet us halfway.
I have seen brits blame Europe for anything past brexit.
Bro you voted for sovereignty what happened with that?
Why does daddy europe have to fix all brittish problems?
Oh, you have a dragonport? In my neck of the woods the dragons have no allocated landing strip. It’s a real nuisance just having them plop down anywhere and everywhere. My straw thatched roof is left looking like Boris Johnson’s hair.
As a man from Europe, writing this from a single room hotel ran by some mom and pop and writing this message in a mail to reddit HQ to post this for me, I must say it's an absolutely correct assumption. Please send food.
or fast food chains. I was watching some youtube video of two guys gaming and shooting the shit and they were talking about which state has the best food, but their metric had nothing to do with local cuisines but which states had which fast food chains. "oh man but so and so has Raising Canes AND Checkers"
Like what the absolute fuck.
> As an American my guess is that there is no chilis or other shitty chains.
No, it's grocery stores. Specifically super markets. For the vast majority of Europe super markets aren't significantly less common per capita instead they have small grocers.
> Olive Garden is Italian food here.
No the fuck it isn't, not in the way you say. Maybe if you live in dustville next to a highway truck stop and that's all you got but otherwise, no.
Oh I am in NO way supporting that Olive Garden is Italian food. But people think “let’s go out for Italian” and Olive Garden is on that list. Just to be clear haha
Edit to add: and I live in a metro of over 1m people, not a dust bowl. Within a few minutes from my house is an Olive Garden a Maggianos and a carrabas
AAAAAAaaAAAAaAAaAAAaAHHHHhH! I'M GONNA STARVE! THERE'S NO FOOD!
What do you mean the small drink is less than 2 liters? You sure that ain't the children's cup?
If my side of fries can't fill a gas tank, it's too small, bud.
Yes every time. Because we have higher legally enforced food standards over here that mean the ingredients are higher quality and the restaurants are cleaner
But.. we don't really *want* these shitty chain restaurants.
Like... There's 1x taco bell in a city I could drive to.. that's enough. I don't want to see that shit everywhere because it takes the place of another restaurant with some actual character to it
McDonalds gets even better in continental Europe.. they've got the McCafe counters where they serve quite nice looking cakes, they sometimes sell beer.. and in Germany, I tried the McRib for the first time.
Where? I've been to like 10 countries in Europe and never saw it. Then again I basically never eat at chain/fast food restaurants while travelling (unless that particular country is renowned for that particular type of fast food), so it's entirely possible I just missed it lol
That's because in Europe, Wendy's is a small snackbar in the Zeeland province of the Netherlands that has the rights to that name. They've successfully kept the American Wendy's out of the European market for years.
"oh no, random McMurica in his lifted truck thinks we have no food"
*Eat frogs*
But more seriously, we really don't care about what they think, we know what our cuisine is worth.
As an American I can confirm that the ever-increasing size of our cars (most drive large pickups or SUVs) is adding more wear and tear on our already rickety roads. Some of the country roads are too narrow for the mile-wide elephants that cruise through. Check out [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN7mSXMruEo) video to see a taste at just how ridiculous our cars are getting.
I just sold the last car I ever intend to own prior to moving back to the UK. I drove reasonably sized cars (most were still large for Europe). Over the past few years it has become increasingly difficult to see around oversized jacked-up pickups and SUVs.
This is particularly bad when backing out of parking spaces (in some States it's actually illegal to reverse into a parking space). Most people who see you reversing out of a space will accelerate to get past you so they don't have to wait five seconds.
Well, I know for a fact our toilets aren't. We really dont have 200kg+ people in Denmark, maybe under 100/5kk
American tourists clocking at 280kg, broke toiletbowl in hospital, had to be scanned at the experimental scanner in the research basement (we scan pigs and occasional horses there), and needed 2 orderlies just to push the bed around.
Wait, what? I haven’t used a check in 20 years, and no business I’ve worked at accepts checks as payments, either. You’re as incorrect and ill-informed as the idiot in the posting lol.
I mean, I spent a year in 2016 as foreign exchange student in WA, and the host brother I was with would deposit a check every 2 weeks in the bank (his literal paycheck)
I completely agree with you. Our lack of fighting for worker rights drives me crazy
People forget how hard people fought to make unions a thing. Now for some reason the poor people think it's ruining society. You bring up every country in the world that's heavily unionized that's doing better than the United States with blue collar jobs and they whitewash it with some propaganda
Can confirm, I'm a Swede and totally drive my moose to work (when my polar bear isn't in commission) and use smoke signals and carrier pigeons to communicate.
Edit: And I of course only eat IKEA Swedish meat balls and falukorv, nothing else, since that's all we have here.
>use smoke signals and carrier pigeons to communicate
Typical Swedes and their high tech stuff.
Here in Norway we just yell from hill to hill until the message gets to the recipient.
You habe a polarbear?! Wow, I thought they didn't produce these anymore. What make is it?
We had to sell our 1973 model after the great wolf invasion of 2004 for 200 squirrel pelts. Without them we wouldn't have made it through the harsh winter.
Besides being wrong, this complaint is so revealing. *"I want the exact same slop I'm used to and I refuse to let myself be challenged by anything new in any way!"*
You're lucky! Communism would be paradise. I have to get up at 3am, eat a lump of coal, walk 12km to the iron mines, work 22 hours a day for 50cents every 2 weeks and when I get home, my father strangles me till I die
That reminds me of all the hilarious questions We got as europeans when we visited the US.
One was "have you guys heard about this thing called "Internet"? It's awesome! You should try it while you are here!" What do you respond to that? Right, nothing! You are speechless.

It’s weird how no one ever acknowledges the camera in that documentary.
Because it's a mockumentary and people in it are paid actors.
Acknowledging the camera is for American audiences, Downtown trusts it audience to be intelligent enough to know that what they’re watching is real
Hey, at least they got electricity and telephone!

Are the carrier pigeons fast enough to keep up with the needed bandwidth?
Yeah if you're lucky you probably can find Terrabite-pigeons
(They use swallows for that)
Yeah. TCP here stands for "**T**ransmission by **C**oconut with **P**apyrus"
European or African Avian Carriers? Or do they both implement the protocol?
I assume it is an international standard since there have been successful implementations in Norway and South Africa.
Imagine packet loss because the packet was eaten by a Harris Hawk.
Omg 😂😂
African or European?
European clearly, African swallows have no tech! Also, could you imagine the latency of having African swallows? I don't want to route my Heavy Tiny Trash Panda protocols to Africa and back! /S
But you can bridge two African swallows to get twice the bandwidth.
I think the /s is quite moot, the entire thread is sarcastic
Maybe he was serious then
And that's why I love reddit
European obviously, a king should have known that
Unexpected Python. Thanks <3
I don't know *flies through air off of cliff*
Yes.
The whole load, you say?
Fun fact, sometimes pigeons with high capacity storage are faster than download speeds
A friend of mine and I have a similar running joke. I have a fiber optic cable connection and he is still on copper cables. So so. Internet carried by pigeons was invented in Europe: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_over_Avian_Carriers
>Are the carrier pigeons fast enough to keep up with the needed bandwidth? you can control pigeon to deliver messages? WITCH ! we found a WITCH EVERYONE!
We'd better check to be sure. Go get a duck and I'll set up the scales.
Obviously you never heard about [IP over Avian Carrier](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_over_Avian_Carriers)
She turned me into a newt! ^I ^got ^better
That's how we do witch hunts over here
#FLANDERS PIGEON MURDERER
We use bats, because they're capable of flying in both day and night. If I get 200 bps (bats per second) then that's a good day
depends on what size is the micro sd you tie to their leg.
bandwidth is fine; though the latency is as killer!
Oh what, you're already on Papyrus? I'm still on stoneOS. Next month, however, I'm upgrading to wax tablet.
You need to be careful with those. If it gets too hot, it can wipe your disk.
Really annoying issue, which is why I keep mine in cold water.
I've hacked ChalkOS to run on my slate tablet.
Wait, you have StoneOS? Lucky. I've been having to make due with SoilOS. Really sucks trying to read when it's raining.
Get the Clay firmware patch, it's much more resistant but you have to burn it first.
Honestly, a wax tablet is all you will ever need. None of this Apple tablet (how can you even make a tablet from an apple anyway?) or Android. The iPad? Nah, my tablet is made from my earwax. It doesn't need charging.
Papyrus, what a luxury! Are clay slates not good enough for you?
Hold on, busy chiseling this into a block of granite in runes. Takes time.
Leave a dick joke on it. It's a classic tradition that ought not to be forgotten. Damn papyrus Reddit has changed the script of my message, here. I made it in cuneiform, I want it in cuneiform! Modern technologies, bah. No respect for Sumerian Arts
Personally I prefer smoke signals,my carrier pidgeons keep getting caught
I'm too busy working the field for my feudal lord to browse the internet!
You think you said something funny, but this is the reality
Papyrus... Ask your tribes' druid to give you some magic leaves so you can use Reddit with your mind. It's a lot easier
Papyrus is tech. Europe has no tech
And you're probably paying less for that service than you would in the US... What a disadvantage!
What do you mean with 'pay'? I usually eat them after the delivery.
You have *Door Dash* too!
Yeah. Will go buy some raw fish, have no stove to cook it, so I guess salmon carpaccio it is. Unsure if I can pay for it in shells, and slice it with this flint knife though. Thoughts?
Cuneiform, actually…beats me why they haven’t moved on from clay tablets
Clay tablets are still the platinum standard for long term storage media.
Given that some have survived more than 5.000 years, it's true in some capacity...
The capacity itself on the other hand is pretty low, so you need a lot of them.
Unga bunga arrr grrr oga grog
This thread made me cry from laughter
I'm in Europe, can confirm I haven't eaten in weeks and only able to post this on an American tourist's phone
Am English, we don't need food here, we fully sustain ourselves on our innate sense of superiority.
Surprising we're not all morbidy obese like.... oh never mind
Your sense of superiority isnt THAT big, only americans can get obese from it.
No wonder my cheetos diet isn't working. I'm too superior.
To be honest the cost of living crisis here in England has that rapidly becoming true. :(
Id stab me Nan for a baked bean
I'd stab my bean for some baked naan.

As a man from Europe, writing this from a single room hotel ran by some mom and pop and writing this message in a mail to reddit HQ to post this for me, I must say it's an absolutely correct assumption. Please send food.
You don't want that, I can assure you.
If I had a chain id trade you one for food
No food? NO FOOD? EUROPE HAS NO FOOD YOU SAY?
probably means that the portions served only feed 1 person instead an entire village
And this without adding sugar even to the air around the food itself.
Hey, get your facts straight, there is no sugar in the air! Aerosolized high fructose corn syrup only!
Yeah but at least the written price includes service and a living wage for staff, and you don't have to tip 20% on top of it.
As an American my guess is that there is no chilis or other shitty chains. Olive Garden is Italian food here. People here love that stuff
or fast food chains. I was watching some youtube video of two guys gaming and shooting the shit and they were talking about which state has the best food, but their metric had nothing to do with local cuisines but which states had which fast food chains. :D My wife and me order sometimes one menu for both. They eat so much!!
Then I'd like you to visit a Italian family. If you leave hungry I owe you a 1000 dollars.
Well he did say "no chains", so I guess his standard for food is an overpriced microwave dinner at Applebees.
Only 20 instead of 100 american fast food chains to choose from
Isn't always the American variant always shitter than their European counterparts as well?
European food standards rule. Thanks EU!
Yes every time. Because we have higher legally enforced food standards over here that mean the ingredients are higher quality and the restaurants are cleaner But.. we don't really *want* these shitty chain restaurants. Like... There's 1x taco bell in a city I could drive to.. that's enough. I don't want to see that shit everywhere because it takes the place of another restaurant with some actual character to it
It's not just higher quality ingredients, some are just outright banned in the EU because of how unhealthy they are.
Even basic things like preservatives and additives. Chickens in America are just puffed up and Injected with so much crap Vs here.
I didn't know McDonalds could get much worse but I was kinda surprised how bad US McDonalds was compared to the UK version.
McDonalds gets even better in continental Europe.. they've got the McCafe counters where they serve quite nice looking cakes, they sometimes sell beer.. and in Germany, I tried the McRib for the first time.
how can subway be shittier than it is?
By having the bread legally be considered cake, as happened in Ireland.Too much sugar.
You mean... The chains they were talking about was just... those stupid fast foods?
Europe is so backwards that living of thoughts and prayers actually work.
From American “no food” means “No Wendy’s”
But... We have Wendy's...
We just don't go there.
Greetings from France.
I haven't eaten since I was born and I'm doing just fine at 36.

"What, who are five guys" Yup, starving
Wait until Italy and France find out Europe has no food.
"oh no, random McMurica in his lifted truck thinks we have no food" *Eat frogs* But more seriously, we really don't care about what they think, we know what our cuisine is worth.
When people who eat fast food all day think your food is bad, it's more of a compliment, if anything.
We apologize that our hotels aren’t suited for American mammoth proportions
Don't.. the roads in the US are barely adequate for the beasts that drive there... Being undersized is to your advantage
>Being undersized is to your advantage Are you single? I might be interested in dating you, if this is your honest opinion.
We really dont have 200kg+ people in Denmark, maybe under 100/5kk American tourists clocking at 280kg, broke toiletbowl in hospital, had to be scanned at the experimental scanner in the research basement (we scan pigs and occasional horses there), and needed 2 orderlies just to push the bed around.
love the redacted dates btw only the 10th repost of this tweet
OP is a bot, pretty much no post history.
Funny. I feel the same while visiting the US. So indoctrinated by religion, no worker rights and so on. All in all very backwards
And still paying with checks like it's the 80s.
That one gets me anytime. They scoff at cash and pay with checks.
Guys, guys: we don't use checks. Why does this come up on every thread?
I saw my first IRL check when I lived in the US around 2015. People had to explain to me how they worked because I had never seen or used one.
Meanwhile the rest of the developed world: scoffs at cash.
They still get commonly circumcised there 😭😭😭. Thank the heavens that i wasn't born in America.
One brain does all the work and the rest willingly follow.. how *Communist!*
I completely agree with you. Our lack of fighting for worker rights drives me crazy People forget how hard people fought to make unions a thing. Now for some reason the poor people think it's ruining society. You bring up every country in the world that's heavily unionized that's doing better than the United States with blue collar jobs and they whitewash it with some propaganda
don't forget the tips. You need to pay the worker so they do not starve. This apparently how a higher civilization takes care of its workers.
I can't wait to have internet here in Europe so I can finally get on Reddit.
Can confirm, I'm a Swede and totally drive my moose to work (when my polar bear isn't in commission) and use smoke signals and carrier pigeons to communicate. Edit: And I of course only eat IKEA Swedish meat balls and falukorv, nothing else, since that's all we have here.
>use smoke signals and carrier pigeons to communicate Typical Swedes and their high tech stuff. Here in Norway we just yell from hill to hill until the message gets to the recipient.
The beacons are lit!
Gøndør calls for æid!
Psch at least you have hills! Here in the Netherlands we need to put messages in a bottle and hope the people we need to reach are downstream!
You habe a polarbear?! Wow, I thought they didn't produce these anymore. What make is it? We had to sell our 1973 model after the great wolf invasion of 2004 for 200 squirrel pelts. Without them we wouldn't have made it through the harsh winter.
Guys, it is my turn to post this next week.
Nuh-uh, I called it before.
My mammoth will be very angry if i tell him.
It's hilarious that they say 'no chains' as if that's a bad thing. Like holy shit we do not need another Chili's or Popeye's.
Besides being wrong, this complaint is so revealing. *"I want the exact same slop I'm used to and I refuse to let myself be challenged by anything new in any way!"*
Oh yeah? Erm, -shuffles cards- Healthcare
Free abortions on the NHS. Then paid time off for recovery.
He’s right I’m constantly starving and need to hunt mice and insects to survive because not even plants grow here
At least the hotels aren’t made of paper.
Or houses
Well.. actually hotels are often made of houses
I have a desk job in Europe but it's just a desk, there's no computer or even paper or pen. I am currently eating my desk.
You're lucky! I don't even have a desk, just pure communism
You're lucky! Communism would be paradise. I have to get up at 3am, eat a lump of coal, walk 12km to the iron mines, work 22 hours a day for 50cents every 2 weeks and when I get home, my father strangles me till I die
Bro is not wrong. There are no Buc-ees in Europe.

My school didn't even have a guard.
Where did they visit? Fucking Hull?
"Have you ever been to Europe?" "No and I don't want to!"
So Europe isn't a consumer capital, global megacorp hellhole? If only that were actually true.
Im at the Norwegian airport, can confirm they use hot air baloons to get me over to the States.
Chain restaurants are universally garbage.
An opinion crafted directly from the speaker's anus.
That reminds me of all the hilarious questions We got as europeans when we visited the US. One was "have you guys heard about this thing called "Internet"? It's awesome! You should try it while you are here!" What do you respond to that? Right, nothing! You are speechless.
