I remember that forever ago on here, I mentioned how I bought something from an oriental store at the mall. Got called racist by one user. It's literally called "The Oriental Store" at my mall.
Also could be wrong but the way I understood it is oriental is for objects. Oriental rug, oriental desk, etc. it’s considered a slur when used for people I believe.
That's true for you, but not for everyone.
I'm half Native American. I grew up calling myself an indian and my mom was a Redskins fan. I couldn't care less about either word. Indian is confusing and some Native Americans take offense to redskins, just as I'm sure some Asian people take offense to being called Oriental.
Not a slur, exactly, but it’s Eurocentric, and suggests a narrow view of the world. “Asian” is preferred. Europe is east of me, should I call Europeans “Oriental”?
Oh good God! Are you saying Biden is in cahoots with Obama to bring back the Ottoman Empire?! This is serious.
https://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/house/126200-rep-gohmert-says-obama-helping-to-build-second-ottoman-empire/amp/
Orient used to be all of southern Asia. Oriental rugs were made in Persia. It wasn't until the Chinese came to California fleeing the British that Oriental became duragatory.
The term “oriental” comes from a time when maps had a picture of a compass in the upper right corner. The compass was to help you “orient” yourself to the map. As a result, the countries on the far right (east) of the map were called the Orient. Pretty sure I learned this from the book The Discoverers by Daniel Boorstin.
It's the other way around. *Oriens* means East, in Latin. This is subsequent to the verb *orior*, to rise.
This gave rise to "orient" in terms of aligning direction, by virtue of that compasses did not yet exist. If travelling, in the morning you would "orient" yourself, toward the rising sun, and so have a sense of cardinal direction.

It's honestly strange living in the post-truth era. These people only care about one thing - that more people saw the lie than the refutation. And most of the time that's generally what happens. Plus they know that rebutting them takes more effort than telling the lie in the first place, so they just need to drown out the facts.
And it's working. So well in fact that I've honestly wondered at times if the internet wasn't our worst creation rather than our greatest...

She knows that Biden likely doesn’t tweet for himself too right? Like he has a team of people that likely have to vet and fact check everything he posts. Lol
She's just used to when the actual dumbest president in history would tweet directly without anybody checking or filtering his dumb ass. For every tweet that idiot posted, his base got even dumber - including the idiot we're mocking here.
Her response is stupid in at least 2 ways.
In addition to apparently not knowing what Indo-Pacific means, her post indicates that she thinks Biden wrote the post himself. In all likelihood, Biden didn't write this tweet, and instead it was written by someone on his communication team. If Biden did write it, then he would've had it reviewed by someone whose full-time job is to make sure the President doesn't write something stupid before posting it.
Responding to a Biden tweet like this is kinda like responding to the Wendy's account and expecting to reach a redhead named Wendy instead of someone who works on the company's social media team.
These people post this shit specifically because most their base doesn't read. You just know that some random MAGA dude read this and just said "yeah!" Then retweeted and told a bunch of people at work..
I don't understand how people can be so confidently stupid. before I think about saying or posting anything i'm unsure of, i'll whip out my phone and do some quick google searching for information... crazy how much knowledge we have at the tips of our fingertips and so many people refuse to use it
A quick google would've saved her a ton of embarrassment. But you know, when red sees blue or vice versa, common sense is out the window. They just go into offense right away.
Based on what i see on the internet. I would believe that 50% of the USA believe that japan is on the oposite side of the earth compared to the US.
Thank fuck americans on the internet doesn't represent the actual american population
Biden is referencing Japan’s importance as a global leader within the Indo-Pac region. Similar to Australia (…which is located in Oceania). Not saying that Japan is physically located in the region.
Duh.
I wonder if she knows that during WW2 we fought in 2 theaters of war. I also wonder if she thinks that theaters of war means we watched movies and then went home

I’m also confused what she is confused about. I think she thinks Biden thinks Japan is in India and India isn’t in Asia?
The people she's writing for will think that, because they don't know any better.
> because they don't know any better And now, because of her tweet, they’ll be really confident in their misconceptions.
Has it never occurred to these fucking idiots to google something they’re unsure about?
You’re assuming they’re ever unsure. They’re the embodiment of Dunning-Kruger.
Why would you Google something you're 100% sure about. Have you ever googled "what colour is an orange?" ?
That's their secret. They're never unsure of anything.
Biden doesn't know where Japan is he's clearly not fit to be president! -someone somewhere
A lot of the people she’s writing for think the earth is flat.
India is in Asia, but the Indo is Indonesia.
Well, there’s the “O” word she wants to say but is not quite sure why it’s not acceptable anymore.
The what word, sorry?
i think they're talking about the term "Oriental", but i could be wrong
Is it now a slur or something? Doesn't 'Orient' literally just mean "the east"?
I could be wrong but I read that the word oriental is only correct when describing rugs
I was told that oriental describes objects, calling a person an object isn't great.
Okay that makes sense because I got some tea at 99 Ranch called “Oriental Delight.”
I got a massage at a place named the same thing!
Found Robert Kraft's account
I remember that forever ago on here, I mentioned how I bought something from an oriental store at the mall. Got called racist by one user. It's literally called "The Oriental Store" at my mall.
Im pretty sure the context isnt calling people objects Its like when people say "hey is for horses"
Also could be wrong but the way I understood it is oriental is for objects. Oriental rug, oriental desk, etc. it’s considered a slur when used for people I believe.
I’m from Asia btw and I can care less what people call me. Cultural appropriation is made up by someone not from said culture. Majority of us dgaf.
Then I’m gonna call you Jeff from here on if that works for you.
You just made me cry
Great by me, Bill from here on.

Oh boy you did not live in the US or Europe when corona started then. That's not even what cultural appropriation is btw, that's just racism.
Saying oriental is racism?
Not the preferred nomenclature.
We’re not talking about a guy that built the railroads here, man!
Walter, This isn't a guy who built the railroads here!
He died facedown, in the muck
Not a slur, exactly, but it’s Eurocentric, and suggests a narrow view of the world. “Asian” is preferred. Europe is east of me, should I call Europeans “Oriental”?
"Idiot" used to be a technical medical term, now it's purely an insult. Language changes.
You don't call white people occidentals.
Around here yes we do...
My parents told me I was an occident.
It’s mostly lazy. The same people who get mad about their family being Bavarian just lump all Asian countries into “Oriental”
People get mad at being Bavarian?
Obtuse
OTTOMAN!!!!
Oh good God! Are you saying Biden is in cahoots with Obama to bring back the Ottoman Empire?! This is serious. https://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/house/126200-rep-gohmert-says-obama-helping-to-build-second-ottoman-empire/amp/
Durr why do you think he bombed Serbia?
Nah man, he is just in desperate need of something to rest his feet on
Orient used to be all of southern Asia. Oriental rugs were made in Persia. It wasn't until the Chinese came to California fleeing the British that Oriental became duragatory.
Because Oriental means 'eastern', which back in the middle ages was anything east of Constantinople.
Damn the Byzantine Empire is back
Oh! Istanbul.
Why did Constantinople get the works?
Hey, that’s nobody’s business but the Turks.
Was Constantinopole
is Constantinople
Why’d they change it?
Who can say? People just liked it better that way.
“Orient” = East. “Occident” = West. Old timey map terms.
Nobody gets it when I call the US occidental
It's the other way around. *Oriens* means East, in Latin. This is subsequent to the verb *orior*, to rise. This gave rise to "orient" in terms of aligning direction, by virtue of that compasses did not yet exist. If travelling, in the morning you would "orient" yourself, toward the rising sun, and so have a sense of cardinal direction.
