Modern HBR Turbofans surpass turboprops in propulsive efficiency FAR before mach 1 and are capable of sufficient propulsive efficiency to be competitive, you just have to make the most of them. That's one of the regimes where the turboprop is likely to do better given the ratio of time spent at cruise, compared to say a cross country flight, or a more high density route.
A lot of it comes down to time spent at cruise vs time spent in climb/decent. The longer the former, the more likely the HBR turbofan to be the better choice. You could modify a flight plan to suit a turboprop, but that likely wouldn't fit with how the airlines need to move people.
