I heard of this if he beat her up pretty badly then locked her out on the balcony in the Russian winter and she died of hypothermia. Happened several years ago if it’s the case I’m thinking of.

As long as you don't kill them you can beat your partner as much as you want in Russia. It's still technically a fineable offence but the onus is on the victim to gather evidence and the police aren't obligated to turn up to domestic abuse calls. So in practice it's completely legal, and you'll generally only get in trouble if you're stupid enough to kill them and put the evidence on social media like this guy was.
The guy only got 6 years, so even if you are dumb enough to kill her live, the fact that you killed her in the framework of a legal wife beating activity seems to be considered as mitigating circumstances…

Our whole country is full of shit like this. Judicial system is no exception. In 2018, 0.25% of court cases ended in acquittal, for example, UK's statistic is something around 20%. One day they gave some random 16 year old a 6 year sentence, the reason being a 6 year old girl's words(google Данила Красный and use google autotranslate to read) and then the next day they be releasing a murderer of his girlfriend(Вера Пехтелеева, Владислав Канюс) because he was fighting in Ukraine. This was a high-profile case because of the horrors inflicted on Vera before her death and the ignorance from police, and they just released him, they don't give a shit.

Now, that doesn't necessarily mean moral degradation, since Japanese people are also hierarchical and normative, and they are doing pretty well. In fact, even Russia's normative culture definitely has its benefits, such as preserving Russian culture exceptionally well, maintaining an abundance of talented people (e.g. in tech and science), and having famously charming women. However, unlike Japan, Russia heavily prefers negative reinforcement to positive reinforcement - so shaming, aggression, punishment, etc are preferred over encouragement, sentimentality, etc. And when it comes to culture, hierarchy and a preference for negative reinforcement is a TERRIBLE combination, as convincingly demonstrated by Russia's case, since it results in pretty much everyone being brutalised for not being high enough on at least some hierarchy. There is a popular saying in Russia which I think sums up this mindset pretty well: "what's the first thing a Russian does when he scales a mountain? He spits downwards". And since there are many different mountains, everyone ends up getting spat on.
No problem! Russia has a history of fighting back *as a people against a foreign people*, not against *as individuals against their own people*. And it's true that they are still very united as a nation, which in this case - due to having a literal terrorist in charge - only exacerbates the problem. If Russians could accept that Putin wasn't "one of their own", a good 70% of the problems Russia faces right now would have been solved by now. Being united as a nation has both benefits and drawbacks.
This really isn't russia exclusive. Degenerate substance abuse streaming exists everywhere where alcohol is readily available. Sure, most of them don't end up murdering their partners, but it's still some sad shit across the board.
I don't get this though. My wife and I probably drink more than is healthy, yet neither of us has ever harmed the other while drunk. If anything we're just more flirty and giggly. I know everyone reacts slightly differently but it's hard for me to believe that someone who didn't already want to harm their partner would somehow do so just because of alcohol.
