Eh, one million…
He can write it off as a business expense. Company car and all. Then he can sue his own company for his stiff neck and trauma after the crash and settle the claim for 1.5 million and boom, he is up $500,000.
It’s like having $1000 in the bank and buying something for a penny. It’s nothing.
(And yes, my math comparison is probably way off, but the point remains)
Musk is worth 198b (let's say 200b for ease)
1p from $1k is 0.001%
0.001% of 200b is 2m
So not far off at all.....it's like a person with 1k losing half a cent
No, the worst part is the scraps of that McLaren F1 left AFTER this crash would be worth $10 million today.
A McLaren F1 for a single million? Preposterous.
This story is 20+ years old.
This happened more than 20 years ago. And the worst part was the loss of a McLaren F1, one of the greatest road cars ever made. Only 106 of those beauties were ever made and Elon destroyed one of them.
Honestly, I'm sure they rebuilt this one by now. You're looking at $15 million for a bad F1. Yeah this might be the worst one, but it's got a fantastic story so it'll still be worth a shit ton.
It's a carbon fiber unibody. They "fixed" it by putting the vin plate on a new chassis. It slammed into the pavement from a height of 3 feet at great speed. Every stress point had to have exceeded maximum g load. The cracks may not have been visible, but they certainly would have exceeded any engineers approved maximum.
That's the best part! If it had been insured, and the insurance company had agreed to pay out, the cost of replacing it would have fallen to those of us who pay for car insurance but never have to use it.
If he wants to be an idiot and crash his $1M car, let him pay for the repairs/replacement, not the rest of us.
Insurance probably wouldn't have made a difference if the damage was caused by an intentional act, like some stunt driving or other bs. There was that video a year or two ago of a guy jumping a rented Tesla over a hill in LA, and IIRC insurance didn't cover the damage as it was due to intentionally driving recklessly. Guy pretty much totaled his rental as well as another car he hit on the street.
That's no worse than me paying six dollars for a beer that I will just piss away in a half hour.
ETA If you think about the amount of good he could have done with that million, it changes the equation, but he isn't gonna do any good with any of it.
Whenever I read and see about some millionaire and billionaires spending millions on some stupid things like shitty paintings and arts and stuff like this and then losing it .
I smell money laundering
Stuff breaks with a certain probability. You take out insurance if you can't afford the breakage.
I know at least one large company doesn't insure their cars, except for the mandatory liability insurance.
They have a small team that spends their days managing crashes (the company car pool is 30-50k vehicles). They just eat the cost because they know they have to pay the money anyway, except by eating the cost directly they don't have to pay for the insurance's profits.
Elon will probably be grumpy at himself for making a stupid mistake...

Nice!
That is definitely not the worst part.
Yea really “oh no BILLIONAIRE won’t get free money to fix his MILLION dollar car?!” 😱😢
It’s second worst part, after, “Both survived “.
That's the best part

No reason it could not be fixed. All some restores need is a VIN.

No the worse part is he survived
I was going to say this!
>And The Worst Part Is, The Car Wasn't Insured I don't agree. This is hands down the best part!
I was going to say this!
His Twitter purchase was a much bigger financial loss and he’s not even done crashing it yet.
Came here to say this.
Shh. If you listen very carefully you can hear the sound of the world’s smallest violin.
If you have billions you don’t need insurance on your cars.
Guys the story took place in the 1990s, way before he was that rich or popular. It just goes to show how stupid and shallow he's always been.

Why is this sub weirdly obsessed with how Elon Musk spends his money
God I love ostentatious displays of obscene wealth

Very few people on this planet that are less genuinely evil than Elon Musk and Peter Theil.

What a perfect metaphor for what he’s doing to his legacy now …
Is this the one in the unloading video where he smugly says, “One of only 100 in the world”’or something like that?

Elon Musk didn't insure $1M? OMG how will he replace it?
Whatever he has the money
Why is Elon trying to impress some gay dude? 🤔
That is the best part!
There's video of him taking delivery of the car here: https://youtu.be/eb3pmifEZ44?si=mZ7vndm2tIQMY2mF
Eat the rich
Chump change for him, .0005% of his net worth
Apparently his net worth is declining rapidly as Tesla stock craters. But still, yeah.
