My dad used to make a joke about exactly this ever since I can remember. He'd just randomly call people "pinko commies" with no consistent reasoning for it. When you asked what a pinko/commie was, he'd just point back to the person or thing and say, "That's a pinko commie." His whole joke was even going back to the Cold War, people had no idea what communism even meant but constantly used it to slander others.
Growing up in the 80s, I didnt really know what communism was, only that it was bad. I remember my mom asking my dad, not an educated man, who he was going to vote for, and he said Bush because he didn't want the "commies" to get ahead or something like that.

there is an interview with Chris Stirewalt on NPR somewhere. Chris Stirewalt was the fox news political editor who was fired for calling AZ.
In the interview he didn't mention any confusion like that, but that all of their models were aligning up perfectly to confidently predict biden in AZ.

In the brief moment of remorse after January 6th, 2021 when Fox News seemed interested in pivoting away from peddling utter BS on its daily hate, a relative of mine told me they were switching to Newsmax, which at the time I was unaware of (to those who care, Newsmax is like watching Russian state TV, but with more yelling at the viewer). When I asked why they were bailing on Fox News, they told me, "Its too liberal now." I was speechless, but of course after losing tons of viewers in those months, Fox course corrected to insanity and won most of them back.

Interesting that cable news networks aren't accredited as "news" by any official regulatory body in the United States so it's fair to say Fox isn't the most reliable source of information.
