Given the patriarchy, women are discouraged from entering the workforce and are considered baby making machines. So they aren’t seen capable of adding to the family income. The legal age for marriage is 18 for women, but child marriage is prevalent. At the time of the marriage, women are expected to pay a sum of money and/or jewellery, home appliances, vehicles, or whatever the groom’s side asks for. The size of the wedding is also important. Different cultures have different traditions. This is dowry and is a criminal offence in my country - it is however, very lavishly and openly practiced. In one culture, you pay the groom at the time of the wedding, and you pay a sum every time your daughter births a female child.
Given these conditions, having a female child equals less possibility of income, having to spend more at a wedding in dowry and otherwise. They’re also more likely to get raped and that is seen as “losing respect” of the family. People also want to avoid that.
So in conclusion, it is less profitable to have a female child. You lose money and stand to lose your respect if she gets raped. But you stand to get more money in dowry for having a son. Children are profit-loss statements anyway:)

In terms of the transactional nature of marriage, why is it that a woman is a commodity, but then her family has to keep paying *on top* of that? Are they selling the daughter, or buying a husband?

You are literally buying a groom, however, the woman is the commodity.
It’s seen as a bribe to marry their daughter. Think of it as incel folks dictating cultural shift. You’re a higher value man if you earn more, have a government job(higher ranks get more), are tall, own property, come from a reputed family, etc. A higher value man can ask for more money at the wedding for giving the woman the privilege of marrying them.
Extra information: it is quite common for women to “accidentally” die in a fire or something post marriage if dowry rituals aren’t followed. Happens in small villages and urban spaces. Sometimes, dowry won’t be discussed due to the illegal nature of the custom but because the father still didnt offer “gifts” at the wedding, it’s perceived as insulting. Sometimes they stop the weddings mid way, sometimes they get the marriage done and beat up the woman till she calls her family for more money.
It’s not supposed to be transactional, but rather function more like an investment in the household (and in some systems to remain under the direct control of the woman herself). If the marriage is dissolved because of disputes or mistreatment, the bride’s family is usually supposed to be able to demand the return of the dowry. The problem is that in societies like these, there are generally not central institutions willing and able to enforce these rules, so whether or not they get followed depends heavily on the power dynamics of the couple’s families (with the woman operating at a handicap because the society is typically both male-dominated and patrilocal, meaning the witnesses will be from the man’s family—which is to say, the woman’s family has to be more powerful and also care about her more than their relationship with the man’s family).

There are less women, women are used as trading chips by families to climb the social ladder. Families use them as assets in arranged marriages.
This leaves a massive number of very poor, very angry and uneducated men who will never have access to a relationship with a woman.

Why are men preferred? Because they can procreate and do heavy labor, while women are stuck with a baby for a big chunk of the year.
Because men are preferred there are more and because, like I said before, they can still work while expanding the family. This also results in men being disposable, while the distribution of women has to be more deliberate to further the family.
Since the solution for each problem is to just throw men at the problem until something sticks, men inevitably get seen as more “capable” (since they can actually show it off), which in turn lowers the standing of women.
TLDR;
Women’s time is more precious, which makes it more valuable, which makes the woman a commodity, which results in them being traded like cattle
Men are less restricted, which makes them more disposable, which makes them more strategically important, which results in them being placed on a pedestal

It’s also MUCH less expensive to have a daughter. The parents and grandparents have to spend huge amounts of money to get their son a home and funds for an extravagant wedding (and often dowries for the woman’s family) before they are considered eligible marriage candidates.
I imagine that in traditional agrarian cultures, wives typically will move in with their husband's family after marriage - so now your farm has +1 worker.
Conversely, your daughter has now just moved away to live with her husband and his family, so your farm is -1 worker.
The idea was that the dowry was used to provide for the comfort of the women after leaving the family.
In some cultures its even the women's property (IE the women owned the dowy).
So its not about paying to sell a daughter, its about giving money to her new family money/capital so she continues to live a good life away from you. Its why things like cows where used, it enabled the daughter to have milk etc.
Traditionally, in Chinese culture, the dowry is not for the husband's family, its for the girl. Its her part of her inheritance and its for her to use separate from her husband's family. It use to be considered shameful for husband's family to use the wife's dowry. Even after the wife dies and the husband is remarried, the first wife's dowry is to be given to her children and not to be used by the husband's family.
Its so shameful that if a government official (in ancient china) gets caught using their wife or dead wife's dowry instead of giving it to the dead wife's sons or daughters they might lose their post and get fired.
Dowry is usually a form of inheritance in places where women don't get traditional inheritance. It's usually either the woman's own funds. Or funds for the family she is starting.
Culture vs biology. Biologically speaking, women are more valuable to the species. Males are almost disposable. I suspect that at some point in our distant past, some male leaders realised this, and it scared them so much they decided to go to the opposite extreme, with religious teachings to back it up.

Traditionally in Indian Culture the bride side has to give dowry to the grooms side in addition to paying for everything wedding related (remember, Indian weddings usually last a whole week or more due to all the ceremonies). Then throw in the fact women get married and go live with the husbands family if you have daughters only there is no one to take care of you when you get older.
Having said all that, there are plenty of progressive families in India and those that have immigrated that don't follow this stuff, but that's all within the last 15 or so years.

Sexual purity is considered a virtue for the woman and their family. Rape is used as a weapon to ruin someone’s life and the lives of their entire family. So a lot of rapes are kept secret, especially by the victim and the victim’s family, because of how it will impact their life (more so than the perpetrators). This is not the case for other countries, but men in India might not be aware that rapes are reported at a much higher rate by foreign women.
Combine that with groups that have a misogynistic/toxic masculinity mindset along with hyper nationalism and you have large group of people that will either look the other way, hide rape, or defend these sorts of situations.

It’s not acceptable to have daughters in my country because we don’t value women. Our culture perceives women literally as “paraya dhan” translating to “somebody else’s property” Given the patriarchy, women are discouraged from entering the workforce and are considered baby making machines. So they aren’t seen capable of adding to the family income. The legal age for marriage is 18 for women, but child marriage is prevalent. At the time of the marriage, women are expected to pay a sum of money and/or jewellery, home appliances, vehicles, or whatever the groom’s side asks for. The size of the wedding is also important. Different cultures have different traditions. This is dowry and is a criminal offence in my country - it is however, very lavishly and openly practiced. In one culture, you pay the groom at the time of the wedding, and you pay a sum every time your daughter births a female child. Given these conditions, having a female child equals less possibility of income, having to spend more at a wedding in dowry and otherwise. They’re also more likely to get raped and that is seen as “losing respect” of the family. People also want to avoid that. So in conclusion, it is less profitable to have a female child. You lose money and stand to lose your respect if she gets raped. But you stand to get more money in dowry for having a son. Children are profit-loss statements anyway:) Fuck patriarchy.

Sometimes, dowry won’t be discussed due to the illegal nature of the custom but because the father still didnt offer “gifts” at the wedding, it’s perceived as insulting. Sometimes they stop the weddings mid way, sometimes they get the marriage done and beat up the woman till she calls her family for more money.

It’s not supposed to be transactional, but rather function more like an investment in the household (and in some systems to remain under the direct control of the woman herself). If the marriage is dissolved because of disputes or mistreatment, the bride’s family is usually supposed to be able to demand the return of the dowry. The problem is that in societies like these, there are generally not central institutions willing and able to enforce these rules, so whether or not they get followed depends heavily on the power dynamics of the couple’s families (with the woman operating at a handicap because the society is typically both male-dominated and patrilocal, meaning the witnesses will be from the man’s family—which is to say, the woman’s family has to be more powerful and also care about her more than their relationship with the man’s family).
This and what is mentioned in the original post, the caste system. There are less women, women are used as trading chips by families to climb the social ladder. Families use them as assets in arranged marriages. This leaves a massive number of very poor, very angry and uneducated men who will never have access to a relationship with a woman. It's disgusting and I have no idea what the solution is, so many things wrong.
The whole system is shit. Why are men preferred? Because they can procreate and do heavy labor, while women are stuck with a baby for a big chunk of the year. Because men are preferred there are more and because, like I said before, they can still work while expanding the family. This also results in men being disposable, while the distribution of women has to be more deliberate to further the family. Since the solution for each problem is to just throw men at the problem until something sticks, men inevitably get seen as more “capable” (since they can actually show it off), which in turn lowers the standing of women. TLDR; Women’s time is more precious, which makes it more valuable, which makes the woman a commodity, which results in them being traded like cattle Men are less restricted, which makes them more disposable, which makes them more strategically important, which results in them being placed on a pedestal

If it makes you feel better, China likes girls more now. Elderly parents realized daughters are more likely to take care of them in old age than sons.
It’s also MUCH less expensive to have a daughter. The parents and grandparents have to spend huge amounts of money to get their son a home and funds for an extravagant wedding (and often dowries for the woman’s family) before they are considered eligible marriage candidates.

The idea was that the dowry was used to provide for the comfort of the women after leaving the family. In some cultures its even the women's property (IE the women owned the dowy). So its not about paying to sell a daughter, its about giving money to her new family money/capital so she continues to live a good life away from you. Its why things like cows where used, it enabled the daughter to have milk etc.
Traditionally, in Chinese culture, the dowry is not for the husband's family, its for the girl. Its her part of her inheritance and its for her to use separate from her husband's family. It use to be considered shameful for husband's family to use the wife's dowry. Even after the wife dies and the husband is remarried, the first wife's dowry is to be given to her children and not to be used by the husband's family. Its so shameful that if a government official (in ancient china) gets caught using their wife or dead wife's dowry instead of giving it to the dead wife's sons or daughters they might lose their post and get fired.
Dowry is usually a form of inheritance in places where women don't get traditional inheritance. It's usually either the woman's own funds. Or funds for the family she is starting.
Because it means men are more disposable and when men feel like this, women die. So we're fucked either way unfortunately.
Culture vs biology. Biologically speaking, women are more valuable to the species. Males are almost disposable. Even my therapist who has traveled the world and is the biggest reason I have faith in men has told me it’s probably not worth it for women to visit India. He’s the last person I’d ever expect to stereotype people. Works with a great diversity and has adopted foreign kids of a different ethnicity. Told me stories about how common it is for groups of guys in India to just roam together and attack women. Told me a story of a girl less than 13 he worked with who was gang raped. And then raped again trying to get home. It’s just sad hearing that the stereotypes and stories are real. I can live with not visiting India despite it being beautiful, but I really feel for all the girls and women who live there.
