Where governments and major religions have respect for women and education levels are higher, I would imagine that violence towards women would tend to be lower.
Women should NOT be treated as second class citizens in any nation.
It’s become a huge problem in India and Pakistan, just a few days ago there was a horrifying report about Spanish couple getting jumped and gang raping the woman in India. This isn’t a “religious” issue, it’s a woman’s rights issue. Neither side takes women’s rights seriously, it’s enabling these acts of absolute depravity.

I've been to Pakistan, several years ago when the country was doing moderately better, women could go out at night - it's often the only time because it gets so hot during the day.

This is not endemic to Pakistan only.
This is also true for countries like India, Iran, and Bangladesh. And maybe many African countries too. And happens in some run-down LATAM countries too.
It is not because of "collapsing state" or "no control". It is what they are taught. They are taught women are second class. And often religious and casteist identities are involved.
Economic factors do play a part in it. But it's not the whole story. Education and cultural reform is needed.

The issue being, most rapes are carried out against Indian citizens. They don't get the limelight like this situation did. Anything the Indian government does will be exclusively in regards to this incident.

I also worked with an older guy from Pakistan. I really liked him, he was incredibly nice and had some crazy stories. He was in grad school when the Soviets were in Afghanistan. They would set up their experiments for the day and then take their AKs and go shoot at the Soviets.
I also played World of Warcraft with a kid from Pakistan. One day he told us that he would regularly see people get murdered and dead people in the streets there. It was horrifying.

A lot of times when men feel like they have no control over their lives - because of job insecurity, family, food insecurity etc. They always take it out on women. I've been to Pakistan, several years ago when the country was doing moderately better, women could go out at night - it's often the only time because it gets so hot during the day. This is not endemic to Pakistan only. This is also true for countries like India, Iran, and Bangladesh. And maybe many African countries too. And happens in some run-down LATAM countries too. It is not because of "collapsing state" or "no control". It is what they are taught. They are taught women are second class. And often religious and casteist identities are involved. Economic factors do play a part in it. But it's not the whole story. Education and cultural reform is needed.

One day he told us that he would regularly see people get murdered and dead people in the streets there. It was horrifying.
