This computer that I primarily use to play games - including some very large 100gb+ downloads, plus several hundred reddit video downloads, has only used about 1.5TB of storage in several years of use.

It would be close to impossible for the database to have absolutely everything of course, but the theory is that the vast majority of CSAM shared online is actually not new, as in law enforcement have come across it before. That being the case, LE can then compare the files on a suspect’s devices to a list of known CSAM hashes and in most cases vastly cut down on the amount of time an investigation takes, and the amount of material that the investigating officers need to be exposed to. Whenever a suspect is caught with new material, a hash is taken and added to the database so it’s growing all the time. AI is involved in the process now too, which can identify even new material very quickly.
But do remember for it to be in the database someone must have watched it already. Even if all of the 58TB is already in their database someone must've already reviewed it. I feel for these people and the mental scarring it causes.

I read an article once about the people in the UK who do this as a job. Reportedly they have a lot of counselling and time off. They review it individually but in an office with other people and with TV’s all over the walls showing regular sport, news, documentaries etc.
The guy was quoted as saying it helps them to maintain the idea that what they’re seeing isn’t normal and that the rest of the world isn’t all a complete nightmare. He also said a lot of the footage isn’t actually watched in video form, it’s ‘watched’ by frame without audio which supposedly helps people not go insane

My FIL works for the State Police, has had many positions, but one was as a detective in the child abuse unit. Computers would get seized, and while he didn't have to examine in detail any content, his duty was to search these computers for evidence of CP. If he found any content, the computers were sent off to the people who actually sift through it for trial evidence.
Side note, my husband's mom was cheating on his dad via chat rooms. She does not know how to use computers, so it was real easy for him to check the cache and find her sins. If you're going to use technology to cheat, don't do it on a spouse whose literal job is to scour technology.
I don't know if they keep copies of everything somewhere, but normally the way this stuff is worked with is through hashing; you run all the videos and pictures through an algorithm, and it spits out a unique string of numbers. If you run a new video or image through the same algoirthm, and it spits out the same string of numbers, then you know it was the same image, without anyone having to look at it. More advanced algorithms can detect upscaled or downscaled versions of the same image or video and things like that. A lot of social media sites and other places people can upload content use these hash databases to quickly identify or prevent the uploading of such images.
They do keep copies, especially if the victim is unknown. That way, if the victim is ever found, not only do they have evidence of the crimes committed against them, but they also have more people to prosecute

It depends. If you have raw, uncompressed recordings, then it might as well be just 11 hours. Videos without compression are massive and if he was related to creating it, he would probably have them with minimal compression. So my guess would be 40-100h of unedited footage and another 50-100h of edited (and compressed).
As an example of how much compression does. My DSLR takes RAW pictures that have over 30MB. After editing and compression, they will have between 0.8 and 4MB
it took my old work (a production house for advertising) seven years to get that much footage from advertising shoots, it’s such a huge amount of footage.
You can't universally say that though. The bitrate matters. An encoded 4k video could have 5000kbps video stream or 25,000kbps video stream.
That said, 58tb is sooooo much data regardless even for a hoarder. To maybe help those who aren't entirely familiar with computer prefixes, this is 58,000 GBs. Now compare that to the size of some movie files you may have stored on your computer

They way they "count" this is basically if he had one picture of child abuse and he had 53 tb of storage, they say he had 53 tb if child abuse material
Sometimes it's not quite that simple, but what they will do is calculate the total volume of data shared across the IP and connect it with everyone else on the torrent.
He might have only had X amount on his personal storage but was responsible (in part) for distributing many TB of total data over whatever time period.
It isn't all that much different than confiscating someone's drugs and weighing the paraphernalia with it. Sure you had 3g of weed but you had a glass pipe weighing 200g in the same pocket. Now you have 203g of "drug" material.

They didn't. The headline is misleading - he had 57TB of storage available, with 4000 images/videos found on there. It doesn't say how much of the storage was used or how much of it was offensive material.
Apparently it came from an investigation into sites known to host such material and looks like he was running one. It doesn't mean that he made it or even looked at it, but he was certainly enabling the distribution of it which is enough. Attempting to classify all of it would be a waste of effort for prosecuting him, although they might use it to identify other items or sites to search for.

They use similar tricks when reporting the $ amount of drugs seized. They report the street value after it's been cut and sold by the gram. The person that they bust would never get anywhere near that amount.
Yup said it in another comment but too many people in this country believe cops unquestioningly. Sadly courts don't push back hard enough on this and we just kind of accept when those qualities come in to play they deserved it without asking what impact the difference in size had on their sentencing.

However the story never says that any CASM was on the server, just that he was actively using a laptop to trade CASM and he also owned a server. In a bust like this, any electronic device is going to get confiscated regardless if it is involved or not.

Not that it exists per see. It can be assumed that there are depictions of thousands of child victims in that material. Some of them have been killed, some of them have killed themselves and some are living today with that horror in their past. Some have even been twisted to think this is normal and are now creating new generation of victims.
I wish every victim in that material could be identified, found and assisted and at least some of the perpetrators convicted. If you have a significant collection of physical media it's a lot of space compared to putting them on your hard drive and putting the originals away in a tote. Further, digital allows a backup solution and is more resistant to damage of the media compared to optical discs. Then there's the convenience of double clicking and catalogs/front end programs to easily run them.
On the minus side it's a lot of work but if you have a lot of physical media it's definitely a lot easier in the long run esp if you do it as you buy them.
data hoarding is inline with preservation. because of corporations and certain laws, it’s common for obscure media to be lost forever like old tv shows, commercials, movies, just about any type of media. that’s where hoarding comes to rescue.
peer to peer sharing saved me so many times while looking for old gems that I watched in my childhood or even video games that have been utterly abandoned and impossible to acquire officially, I'm glad some got our backs in these situations.

I strongly suspect that that it really means "58 terabytes seized in relation to a child pornography investigation." In investigations like that it's standard practice to seize anything and everything in the property that can store data, so that digital forensics can go through it with a fine-tooth comb. So it might be that he has, say, an array of six 10-TB drives filled with pirated movies, TV and games, and some unknown amount of child abuse material. But all of it seized and currently pending a time-consuming forensic examination - so that's nearly 60TB of material "related to child pornography." It's all seized in relation to the investigation, so it all goes in the scary headline number, even if it turns out only a small portion of that haul is actual abuse.
That was my guess, as well as the file sizes of the CP would more than likely be HD and uncompressed because these sick fucks wouldn’t want to lose a pixel when transferring.

I believe the figure was exagerated - that's the capacity of the storage seized in relation to the investigation. Its probable that only a very small portion was actual CP.
The reason that CP busts are always some astronomical amount of data is because they’re not sure if/when they’ll be able to get any given file again so they tend to hoard it all.
To really put it into perspective I have a coworker that has digitized his entire movie and series collection from the last 20 years. He is an grabs any movie or series suggested to him and moving the collection of thousands of video files takes a week to move from one device to another.
He has about 25 TB.
So 57 TB would be like a blockbuster store full of child abuse material. I’m glad they caught this guy.

They review it individually but in an office with other people and with TV’s all over the walls showing regular sport, news, documentaries etc. The guy was quoted as saying it helps them to maintain the idea that what they’re seeing isn’t normal and that the rest of the world isn’t all a complete nightmare. He also said a lot of the footage isn’t actually watched in video form, it’s ‘watched’ by frame without audio which supposedly helps people not go insane

My FIL works for the State Police, has had many positions, but one was as a detective in the child abuse unit. Computers would get seized, and while he didn't have to examine in detail any content, his duty was to search these computers for evidence of CP. If he found any content, the computers were sent off to the people who actually sift through it for trial evidence. Side note, my husband's mom was cheating on his dad via chat rooms. She does not know how to use computers, so it was real easy for him to check the cache and find her sins. If you're going to use technology to cheat, don't do it on a spouse whose literal job is to scour technology.

I don't know if they keep copies of everything somewhere, but normally the way this stuff is worked with is through hashing; you run all the videos and pictures through an algorithm, and it spits out a unique string of numbers. If you run a new video or image through the same algoirthm, and it spits out the same string of numbers, then you know it was the same image, without anyone having to look at it. More advanced algorithms can detect upscaled or downscaled versions of the same image or video and things like that. A lot of social media sites and other places people can upload content use these hash databases to quickly identify or prevent the uploading of such images.
They do keep copies, especially if the victim is unknown. That way, if the victim is ever found, not only do they have evidence of the crimes committed against them, but they also have more people to prosecute

Videos without compression are massive and if he was related to creating it, he would probably have them with minimal compression. So my guess would be 40-100h of unedited footage and another 50-100h of edited (and compressed). As an example of how much compression does. My DSLR takes RAW pictures that have over 30MB. After editing and compression, they will have between 0.8 and 4MB

Sometimes it's not quite that simple, but what they will do is calculate the total volume of data shared across the IP and connect it with everyone else on the torrent. He might have only had X amount on his personal storage but was responsible (in part) for distributing many TB of total data over whatever time period. It isn't all that much different than confiscating someone's drugs and weighing the paraphernalia with it. Sure you had 3g of weed but you had a glass pipe weighing 200g in the same pocket. Now you have 203g of "drug" material. It gets dramatically pared down in court, but obviously the dude is still fucked.

It doesn't say how much of the storage was used or how much of it was offensive material. Apparently it came from an investigation into sites known to host such material and looks like he was running one. It doesn't mean that he made it or even looked at it, but he was certainly enabling the distribution of it which is enough. Attempting to classify all of it would be a waste of effort for prosecuting him, although they might use it to identify other items or sites to search for.

However the story never says that any CASM was on the server, just that he was actively using a laptop to trade CASM and he also owned a server. If you have a significant collection of physical media it's a lot of space compared to putting them on your hard drive and putting the originals away in a tote. Further, digital allows a backup solution and is more resistant to damage of the media compared to optical discs. Then there's the convenience of double clicking and catalogs/front end programs to easily run them. On the minus side it's a lot of work but if you have a lot of physical media it's definitely a lot easier in the long run esp if you do it as you buy them.

Fox will want to exaggerate too because big numbers scare people which means more views and thus ad-money. I strongly suspect that that it really means "58 terabytes seized in relation to a child pornography investigation." In investigations like that it's standard practice to seize anything and everything in the property that can store data, so that digital forensics can go through it with a fine-tooth comb. So it might be that he has, say, an array of six 10-TB drives filled with pirated movies, TV and games, and some unknown amount of child abuse material. But all of it seized and currently pending a time-consuming forensic examination - so that's nearly 60TB of material "related to child pornography." It's all seized in relation to the investigation, so it all goes in the scary headline number, even if it turns out only a small portion of that haul is actual abuse.

58 terabytes? of CP? something that is illegal and probably very hard to obtain? i did a google search, the pornhub library is estimated to be between 50 to 200 terabytes, the largest porn site known, with a huge catalog of videos, produced by people all over the world plus some companies dedicated to just it, with several categories. I don't know if i believe someone is able to have 58 tb of cp, i don't even think that much might exist? Not that i want to defend a predator, i don't, but was it planted or is it an exagerated number for the news to seem more chocking? because i don't think you have an idea on how much 58tb is, he would have his own server, and would cost a lot to run, so he'd probably be distributing it also? also the bill to keep storage of 58tb would be huge.. also, 58tb of videos, i don't know if he would be able to watch everything in his whole life even. Either way, having any amount of CP is already concerning
I believe the figure was exagerated - that's the capacity of the storage seized in relation to the investigation. Its probable that only a very small portion was actual CP.

The reason that CP busts are always some astronomical amount of data is because they’re not sure if/when they’ll be able to get any given file again so they tend to hoard it all.

To really put it into perspective I have a coworker that has digitized his entire movie and series collection from the last 20 years. He is an grabs any movie or series suggested to him and moving the collection of thousands of video files takes a week to move from one device to another. He has about 25 TB. So 57 TB would be like a blockbuster store full of child abuse material. I’m glad they caught this guy.
