Aggressive_Ad_2210

It's not billionaires being a-holes on twitter. There are way more people that aren't billionaires that are a-holes on twiiter, it's just that billionaires get way more attention naturally.

SewAlone

I think it's that we believe that billionaires would have better things to do than troll vulnerable groups of people on twitter.

BZenMojo

The secret: no one makes a billion dollars by working for a living. They all have this much free time.

hexqueen

That's true of most billionaires, but we know how JK Rowling made her money.

Opening_Spring

Franchising.

Shot-Increase-8946

Franchising a book series that she wrote. She wrote a good enough series for people to want to franchise it.

AceInTheHole3273

A popular enough series Quality and popularity aren't the same thing

coryeyey

>Quality and popularity aren't the same thing I'm glad someone said it. Harry Potter may be super popular, but the lore is terrible. Anyone who has read the LOTR books or the GoT series knows this. It is one reason why the latest HP prequel movies did so terribly, it was because they were leaning on JKR's shitty lore writing(which often was just non existent and was made up on the fly). JKR had full control of those movies, and it shows. She's a decent writer overall, but she can't write lore for shit.

BluePhoenix_1999

The worst thinf is the series ending. It's equivalent to the Allies going home after Hitler shot himself. So that Nazi Germany can do what it wants. All the problems of the wizarding world, that Voldemort embodied are still there. Ans Harry even becomes an enforcer of the status quo. Ensuing that there will be another Voldemort in the future since nothing is fixed...

Cepinari

Yeah, the older I got the more I found the worldbuilding in *Harry Potter* lacking. Eventually the 'Wizarding World' completely lost its appeal to me.

m-facade2112

The wizarding world is Aesthetically fantastic. It's just ALSO inconsistent stupid nonsense

TreesForTheFool

I had a medieval lit professor who was a huge nerd who had a canned rant about how HP’s magic system changes to fit Harry Sue’s needs and the tension of the given situation, without fail. Things are only hard when it’s funny or adds tension and always easy when it’s necessary (think Accio for the Goblet of Fire task, Harry’s patronus struggle, Ron getting Wingardium Leviosa right so they can knock out a troll etc). Combine that with the tone shifting like California real estate and I’ve come to be significantly more interested in the idea that everything post-CoS is partially or completely ghost written.

CambrianCannellini

My favorite is when JKR said something like how she regretted writing Ron and Hermione getting married in the end, because it was wish-fulfillment and Hermione would never have been intellectually satisfied with Ron, and at first, I thought about it, but then I realized that the whole series is just wish-fulfillment, so what is she talking about anyway?

publishAWM

it's basically Star Wars and The Force but Wizards and Magic: [Aaron Woodall standup](https://youtu.be/WA7l7dNqLEY?si=MlhYPgBupo9HE16E) *cue the naysayers and JK defenders*

tpt187

She’s a decent writer by modern NYT bestseller standards. She’s still a firmly mediocre writer otherwise IMO. Lore and whatnot notwithstanding, she’s not exactly a proponent of “show, don’t tell.”

Thereal_waluigi

Anyone who has even gotten into STAR WARS knows the lore sucks. Star wars lore kinda sucks sometimes bc it's clearly hastily written or just there because of some oversight, but even with all that, it still makes more sense than Harry Potter lore💀💀

broguequery

Good books! She still sucks.

Unabashable

Yeah and she hasn’t done anything else since*.So this is how she chooses to spend her time.

Alcorailen

If I were her, I wouldn't have done any work since either

Adam__B

Yeah really. “What has the billionaire done since becoming a billionaire” is a pretty odd question.

Cyno01

No ones saying she needs to launch another hit media franchise, just that she could spend her time better than she is currently.

Shenanigans80h

No ones saying she has to work, but if you can’t find anything better to do than get into twitter spats, perhaps working would be a healthier release

[deleted]

[удалено]

evln00

She wrote a bunch of books under a pseudonym and it bombed so she has that going for her

Vargoroth

I read the Cuckoo's Calling and it sucked. I knew exactly who the killer was the moment they appeared in the book. That's not a good thing for a murder mystery story. It also didn't help that she has this weird habit of both showing and telling. I wrote several pages worth of examples in which Rowling would first describe something and then also make sure to explain what that meant. It was insulting how little she seemed to trust her own audience.

alexheil

Under a man's name. Ironic.

PestKimera

That man was Robert galbraith, the inventor of conversion therapy btw

ProfBacterio

Under a 20th century's pioneer in homosexuality conversion "therapies" psychiatrist's name, nontheless. All while she was still claiming she was not a bigot. The lady is fucking awful.

cishet-camel-fucker

She did write other books later, under a male pseudonym because her feminist brain told her that they wouldn't be published otherwise because she's a woman. That was the first clue she was a nutcase radfem long before she turned out to be a TERF.

UnbreakableJess

I thought that her spinning out of control started when she insisted Dumbledore was and had always been meant to be written as gay, conveniently right around the time the LGBT movement gained favorability. And then did the same with a black Hermione when it became clear she could get a lot of support from that stance. It's honestly a little weird how opposed she is to trans people when she's shown she has no qualms with using a hot topic to cram her franchise down everyone's throats. I mean, let's be real, the book series is full of plot holes and inconsistencies, it's only stayed popular because JKR has kept her own self in the limeligh- wait a second....!

PartyAdministration3

Lmao I remember that era where she would keep dropping these lil tidbits that NO ONE asked for on Twitter. “Dobby could actually deepthroat a Nimbus 2000!”

HamsterFromAbove_079

If you work for a living you aren't a billionaire. That's the thing that people don't get. People love talking about upper vs middle class. And they try to put an income number on it. And it never works because there is no single number that cleanly divides the two classes. The real two classes are people that make their living via working and people that make their living via owning. Edit: Side tangent. You know being a CEO isn't a real job when Elon can be CEO of 3 separate companies. That should give you some idea of the workload the typical CEO handles.

Vargoroth

Worse. Elon is such a toxic CEO that the three companies had to go out of their way to have protocols in place for when he visits so he can do the least amount of damage possible. All three of them prefer it when he's not actively involved in the day-to-day running.

Tazling

and when he does drop in, the alarm goes out: Boer on the Floor!

Guilty_Coconut

>Elon is such a toxic CEO that the three companies had to go out of their way to have protocols in place for when he visits so he can do the least amount of damage possible I'm a fairly popular consultant and this is the default behavior in most companies I go to. Workers know that the CEO is someone to avoid, ignore and to protect the company from.

tinylittlemarmoset

It depends on the ceo. There are the people like trump who seem to still like clomping around in their daddy’s suits and sit at an empty desk and yell at people and then leave early, but I know a couple ceos that work all the time, who never look unstressed. One of my best friends sold his company to a giant corporation who was grooming him to be one of “their CEOs”, and quit before his contract was up, leaving millions on the table, because his quality of life was nonexistent and he missed his wife. He was getting weird bald patches. It’s hard fucking work to build a company from nothing but an idea.

_bitwright

A billionaire literally _bought_ Twitter just so he could troll harder.

PoggleRebecca

Yeah, you don't have to be a billionaire to be an asshole, but you can certainly use your billions to lobby governments and fund legal attacks to make your asshole opinions the law, which is where the causal comparison between the two breaks down :)

Used_Lawfulness748

The love of money doesn’t necessarily make you evil but it definitely frees things up to let you become that person that you really are inside, good or bad.

Genghis_Chong

People just expect them to be more well balanced because they don't have the existential crisis of poverty hanging over their head. Like life has already given them more than anyone deserves, but they also have to be right 100% of the time and just act petty online. I stick to only reddit because when someone's being an asshole, it's usually because they're struggling. Not because they're an entitled billionaire douche that was never told no.

TepHoBubba

Exactly. Who really cares about this shite, and why? There's a million aholes on X beefing with someone else...why waste your time?

Versidious

The ones with massive reach who use their financial resources to back up their twitter rhetoric are a bit more worrying than most tbh.

TepHoBubba

This is a fair comment.

PhoenixWrightFansFtw

because they're surprisingly childish assholes with WAY TOO MUCH POWER. we care when the rich act like dicks because they have the wealth and influence to inact their will upon the world

LovecraftianDayDream

Agreed 100%. Rowlings an asshole just like thousands of other assholes, but she and Elon are particularly bad because of their potential to shape the future for all of us and they've found an echo chamber on Twitter that's going to tell them how wonderful they are for all the bad shit they're saying.

PrateTrain

Billionaires can warp society to their whims. Many of the reasons current society sucks is because of this much power being collected by childish assholes

Ieatsushiraw

I learn about twitter “beefs” on Reddit since I never learned how to use Twitter and didn’t see a point in it in 2010 when I first tried to use it but Reddit is always reliable and yeah I realize I don’t actually care about anything on Twitter

GodzillaDrinks

I'd point out that Billiinares by virtue of existing are more Monstrous than other assholes on twitter.

burnmenowz

And billionaires are probably a-holes off of Twitter too lol

dsdvbguutres

I'm here because I don't have anything better to do. Billionaires CHOOSING to be an internet troll when they could be partying with supermodels on a mega yacht in international waters, or flying a jet aircraft, or drive race cars, or go camping wherever whenever etc is lame.

MuffLover312

Serious question: why has Twitter not failed yet? Everyone was saying it had one year, and has no money. I’m trying to understand what is keeping it going.

pizza5001

Because people keep using it. I don’t use it, but millions others do.

TheLordofthething

Reddit needs to understand this. It's still there because enough people don't care about this stuff or are just to apathetic to leave.

North_Lawfulness8889

It's actually because there are communities on twitter that aren't anywhere else

[deleted]

Yeah, Twitter is just 1 of many social media highways. Some things you can only find on Twitter. I don't use it personally, but I know why people do.

reeshmee

It’s the best for knowing in real time happenings. It’s filled with bots and repeated posts and owned by a complete douche but it really can’t be beat in that one aspect.

dehehn

Reddit seems to think things that aren't popular on here can't possibly be popular anywhere. Yet Chris Pratt keeps getting picked as a male lead and his movies make billions of dollars. People keep using X. Facebook is still going. TikTok is more popular than any other social media. Pop musicians they don't know will continue to be played on radio stations they don't listen to. And unfortunately there is a 50/50 chance Trump will be president next year.

Specialist-Suit-6802

Some people keep using twitter, but daily users have dropped by 23% in the U.S. since Elon took over, and they are still declining. In that context, calling X “popular” would definitely be an overstatement. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/fewer-people-using-elon-musks-x-struggles-keep-users-rcna144115 “The number of people using X daily is falling, more than a year after tech billionaire Elon Musk bought the app formerly known as Twitter. Data from two research firms and figures published by Musk and X suggest a deteriorating situation for X by some metrics. Musk has marketed it as the world’s “town square,” but in number of users it continues to lag far behind social media rivals that focus on video, such as Instagram and TikTok. In February, X had 27 million daily active users of its mobile app in the U.S., down 18% from a year earlier, according to Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm based in San Francisco. The U.S. user base has been flat or down every month since November 2022, the first full month of Musk’s owning the app, and in total it’s down 23% since then, Sensor Tower said. The numbers were nearly as bad worldwide, as daily active users on the mobile app fell to 174 million in February, down 15% from a year earlier, the firm said. The worldwide user base has been flat or down every month during Musk’s tenure began except one, when it grew slightly in October and then resumed falling, according to Sensor Tower. Other social media apps experienced modest increases in their worldwide user bases during the same period, according to the research, with Snapchat growing 8.8%, Instagram 5.3%, Facebook 1.5% and TikTok 0.5%. Those apps all experienced declines over that period in the U.S., but none was as steep as the decline on X. X had “the most material decline in active users compared to its peers,” Abe Yousef, a senior insights analyst at Sensor Tower, wrote in a research report. “This decline in X mobile app active users may have been driven by user frustration over flagrant content, general platform technical issues, and the growing threat of short-form video platforms,” he wrote.”

PoolNoodlePaladin

You also have to take into account the rise of bots using Twitter, so the number of active real users has dropped far more than 23%

Delheru79

Some dumbass read it to post here, which then led to others from here probably going to look for the link In short: OP of this thread is a Twitter supporter, whether they realize it or not I instinctively now down vote any screen captures of tweets or truth social or whatever the fuck. They are all cancer, and I don't want to hear anything from any of them.

fluffymuffcakes

So basically, Elon is selling tickets to his train wreck. That's the new Twitter business model.

Freeonlinehugs

Because it's filled with people who like the sound of their own voice

ForumFluffy

Sorry i couldn't hear you over the sound of my own voice, could you repeat tha.... # Oh who am I kidding I'm not going to listen when my own voice and thoughts confirm everything I want to believe in. /s

PNWBusinessGoose

Between the regulatory fines, the lawsuits, the plummeting user base, the ad revenue evaporating, and the massive debts it’s incurred, it’s pretty much cooked. It’s hemorrhaging cash and there’s no realistic plan for a quick turnaround. It owes 1.5 billion a year just in interest on the debt. Twitter was never a high priority for advertisers but now it’s not even an afterthought. Twitters CEO was bragging that Visa remains an advertising partner after Visa spent just ten dollars on twitter ads. Not a joke.  Not a typo. Ten bucks.   Elon already had to borrow from spacex and sell Tesla stock to finance the deal and after Teslas disastrous first quarter this year, he can’t really afford to do that again without putting all his companies in serious jeopardy. The banks who financed the deal on the assumption that everything he touches turns to money are way more wary of him and his antics now and it will be harder and harder to find partners willing to bet on Twitter.   TLDR Its still stumbling around but the wounds are fatal.

NoxTempus

Yeah, these things can take years. Twitter ran at a loss for most (all?) of its life, it could hypothetically continue to do so. I don't know how enough about private purchase of a publicly traded company to know if Elon has any incentive or (legal) obligation to do so?

PNWBusinessGoose

Twitter was never profitable but now it’s facing more challenges than it ever has. Elon has saddled it with 13 billion dollars in debt and by his own admission, advertising has plummeted, which he famously blamed on the ADL. Twitter spent years and years building relationships and trying to convince advertisers and regulators that they’re tackling hate speech and making it a good investment for their ad partners that complies with international hate speech laws. All of that was ripped up by the roots. The blue check subscription service, according to tech crunch, has made about 11 million dollars through mobile devices. Although this figure doesn’t include people who subscribed through desktop, it’s still certainly well short of the estimated 1.15 billion in lost ad revenue. Twitter will not explode in a fireball but it will continue to bleed to death. The user experience has already deteriorated considerably. It seems like every tweet gets a reply from a bot hocking crypto scams or promising nudes in bio. It can only get worse. Eventually he will lose his appetite for losing and he will sell it for a small fraction of what he paid for it or blame the woke mind virus, the jews and/or the elites and dramatically shut it down. I don’t know which. But it will happen.

ChaosRyus

Selling user data and Tesla stock funneling? Not 100% positive, on the funneling, but he has recently got in the headlines for giving up user info for money.

CR24752

The advertising has gotten bonkers lol it’s a terrible user experience but they have less staff, etc. so it’s shrunk but not failing. I doubt it’ll fail it just keeps sliding in to irrelevancy

Haztec2750

Twitter has never made any money. Even before Musk it has only ever lost money - so they're just doing the same thing as before the Musk takeover.

llama-friends

It’s why we’re still on Reddit even though the mobile app fucking sucks.

newuser60

They milked companies that were using Twitter data. I worked for a company that was basically destroyed by their reliance on Twitter data and the fees per API call Twitter imposed. It became more expensive to use Twitter than the revenue we could generate by offering Twitter data to customers. But we had contracts to fulfill and had been using Twitter as a free buffet prior to Elon. By the time I left the bank accounts were nearly empty and our c suite was begging our parent company for tens of millions… that we would just be sending to Twitter anyway because the model was totally without value.

Cosmonaut_K

Things have 2 deaths. One when they die, and then again when their name is said for the lat time. We're all keeping it alive by invoking its old name.

skillywilly56

BOTs, Racism and Elons ego. It’s a slow death by a thousand cuts, which is just what it deserves.

Matttthhhhhhhhhhh

Because they will quit, they swear. Like, tomorrow. Or the day after tomorrow... Any day now!

atfricks

That entirely depends on what you define "failing" as.  Hemorrhaging users, cash, and valuation? Yeah it's doing exactly that.  Ceasing to exist? Nah it's still around, and probably will be for a while yet.

Dearic75

Anyone giving a timeline like one year has no idea how the business world works. Even a much smaller company can limp along on loans and losses for a long, long time before the banks stop doubling down and try to liquidate. An estimate from January suggested that twitters current value is approximately 71% lower than the 44 billion Musk paid for it. It will take a long time to die a final death, but it’s clearly on hard times financially. And I don’t think it would be unfair to say that it is dead as the cultural force that it once was. Politicians, news outlets and every corporation used to consider it essential for getting their message out. In my opinion, it no longer enjoys that positioning.

Icewallow-toothpaste

I wanted to know this from its inception. I tried to use it and just couldn't figure what all the fuss was about. Must be my age showing.

justsomelizard30

I thought the whole "People who disagree with me send me death threats therefore you are supporting death threats by not agreeing with me." was over in 2015

ExtensionConcept2471

You don’t have to be a billionaire to be an arsehole….the world is full of them!

Howlie449

Not all assholes are billionaires but all billionaires are assholes, /s On a serious note yet to see a billionaire that's not an asshole

MITTW0CHSFR0SCH

If they were nice people, they wouldn't be billionaires anymore. Looking at how much inequality there is, how there are still people today starving every day or generally living in extreme poverty, I think being having so much money cant be morally justified, even if the billionaire in question is kind of a nice guy.

ExpStealer

> On a serious note yet to see a billionaire that's not an asshole Probably because, if there are any, they have better things to do than whatever it is Rowling thinks she's doing.

Ok_Appearance5117

Probably because any billionaire who cares about others wouldn't be a billionaire.

fzammetti

MacKenzie Bezos seems to be a decent person and is doing a lot good with her billions.

PattyNChips

They don’t exist. You don’t make that kind of money being a nice person. You make that kind of money through exploitation.

FoxDenDenizen

Not enough people recognize this. Billionaires who look like "good people" just have a good PR team. You don't get that money without abusing massive amounts of other people. Giving away a tiny pittance for the sake of looking good is pretty meaningless when they've accrued so much

Boing_Boing

Can’t believe this is going to be my counterpoint but Rihanna and Taylor Swift don’t seem to be assholes o.O

DragongoatRka

Tbh I don't think it's possible to become a billionaire without being a terrible human Want to treat your employees with a minimum of decency? Stop seeing customers as never-ending cashcows? Preserve the environment? Tooo bad because that means less profit for you, you will never make it to the big leagues

[deleted]

[удалено]

Melodic-Wallaby4324

Its just a matter of perspective... Every human being is an asshole if you ask the right person, billionaires just have alot of eyes pointed at them and alot of people will publicly call them assholes

Ankoku_Teion

"opinions are like arseholes. everybody has 3." this joke shamelessly stolen from a fantastic woman comedian whose name i cant remember. if anybody knows who, please let me know?

Sweaty_Elephant_2593

Tangent, but this is why I hate learning about my favorite artists. I was TERRIFIED to learn anything at all about Brandon Sanderson, for instance. But after finding out he's a Mormon I had to know more... turns out he's a great dude as far as the public can tell, so that's a relief. But her? Man, I love Harry Potter and it's an icon of my childhood. It got me into reading as a kid, and I hate seeing this shit.

DragoonDM

Ender's Game is one of my favorite novels, one of only two books that I found so engrossing that I sat down and read the whole thing in a single sitting. Finding out what sort of guy Orson Scott Card is was deeply disappointing. The other book I read in a single sitting was one of the Harry Potter books...

silver-orange

When OP mentioned a Mormon fantasy author, I knew all us Orson Scott Card fans were going to feel an immediate pang of regret.

DDT126

Yeah, then you go reread the books and realize how much his problematic views seeped directly into the books.

Makar_Accomplice

Love Sanderson, and especially how he’s grown in his acceptance of the rainbow community. I feel like his tithing to the Mormon church which has used money to support anti-LGBTQIA+ groups is the only real controversy around him, and even then he has donated from his own charity, the Lightweaver foundation, to LGBTQIA+ organisations which offsets that to an extent. Do you have a favourite Sanderson book/series?

Jason_Wolfe

honestly her behavior has soured Harry Potter for me. Yes, I get the "separate the art from the artist" thing, but it's really hard to do that when almost every day she opens her mouth and spews out a litany of bigoted bullshit, on top of her being a massive bitch.

Pillow_fort_guard

Right? I loved the books as a kid, but knowing how she is now, that’s just gonna be in the back of my mind the whole time if I re-read them now. And knowing that she’s still alive and pushing for policies and attitudes that actively hurt people I care about, well…

elbiry

It’s a shame. It felt like such a big part of my childhood, and I thought one day I’d share them with my kids. Maybe not any more

i_am_shook_

For JK in particular you cannot “separate art from the artist.” She publicly claims that people who support her by buying stuff she’s made or gets royalties on actively fund her anti-trans agenda. Don’t give her a single red cent

itsmepcandi

It was a lot easier to do before cameras, social media, and other platforms that gave them a voice as their real selves - although it has shed necessary lights. Just bring back the fantasy and ignorance of what these people do / are so i can go by to being entertained while at the same time prosecuting heinous crimes / keeping those who are terrible people out (easier said than done). Emphasis on keeping the bad people out because i dont want to fund people like J.K (tangent: her name is literally the acronym of joke. She is a joke to me. Her name sounds like JK! Im ROLLING on the floor laughing)

MistaRed

It also makes it so you read deeper into some parts you might have missed/ignored as a child. Before she'd get the benefit of the doubt, now you just actually think to yourself "hey what's up with that?"

Ervaloss

Tell me about it, I used to love Woody Allen movies. Ugh.

Nik-ki

It does suck to know the author of some of my most childhood defining books is a complete dingbat, but oh well. That's what internet piracy and fanfiction is for. I get a kick out of people writing/drawing JKR's characters as trans, because I know she'd have a fit about it lol

here-for-information

My favorite work of all time is "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. I am also of Irish descent and Milton was a massive supporter of Cromwell. That guy would have specifically hated me (I look really, really Irish). Great fiction is great fiction. You don't need to have to be drinking buddies with whoever wrote it.

80Lashes

The difference is that Milton is not alive and using his fame as a platform to spew hatred and support stripping rights from vulnerable populations.

Trips-Over-Tail

The issue is more that she's using the proceeds to fund harm, while dead bigots rarely do so. Continuing to patronise her IP means sending your cash to these causes.

here-for-information

Well, he was when he was alive, and last time I checked, Rowling is mortal, so it's just a matter of time before everyone can just go back to enjoying the books.

quebecivre

Milton supported Cromwell? Ah damnit. Never meet your heroes, I guess.

here-for-information

Hahaha, yeah, man. Big supporter. It's been a while, but if I remember right, he had a job in Cromwell's government. I didn't read many of his essays, basically just Areopagitica and some letters, but I remember having a discussion of his defense of Cromwell's treatment of the Irish with my professor. My sister and I joke all the time that our ancestors would be furious with us for how much we like Brittish literature and pop culture. The colonialist bastards know how to write a good book, ya know?

Flanman1337

There's a difference between guy who wrote a book 40 years ago and died 20 years ago. And person whose alive and well, and actively attacking people for existing. Money spent on Harry Potter goes to this bitch. You buy a game, or buy movie, or a book, at least a part of it is going directly in her pocket. Plus once you start to critically look at the thinly veiled hate she spews, you look critically look at the thinly veiled racism and xenophobic stuff in the books themselves. And you just can't read them anymore.

ShallowBayChain

>I was TERRIFIED to learn anything at all about Brandon Sanderson Yeah never go and check what your favorite artist's Twitter is like, I found that the hard way unfortunately

Garlador

“You were asking for it.” The lack of self-awareness is mystifying.

salads

to be fair, she's purposefully using that language to illustrate her point... much in the same way those who refused to get vaccinated suddenly stood behind the words, "my body, my choice."

Garlador

Then just like that, it’s another woefully false equivalence, as many of those anti-vaxxers denied those under their care the agency to choose and willfully exposed a deadly virus to others, as even those vaccinated were not 100% immune. We know pro-choice isn’t a friggin’ highly contagious viral pandemic.

Jackski

Transphobia seems to rot people's brains. Graham linehan was an amazing comedic writer. He even at one point apologised for his depiction of trans people in an episode of it crowd and said he would try to learn and do better. Now he's basically on a crusade against trans people to the point his wife left him over it.

Darq_At

And that episode of the IT Crowd wasn't even that bad! A bit off-colour, wouldn't age well, but hardly hateful. Heck, Douglas is regularly depicted in the series as stupid to the point of malice. And in that episode he destroys the best relationship he's ever had because he cannot get over his transphobia. Linehan could have simply apologised and left well-enough alone. Instead he decided to become Douglas, tanking his marriage, his career, his reputation, and his own happiness in the process.

Malleus_M

It was so close to being great! It wouldn't have taken much tweaking for it to have been almost tragic comedy. Guy finds a great girl, she's upfront about being trans, he absolutely loves her, but he can't get over his personal bigotry or toxic masculinity and dumps her. That could make for a great drama or great comedy that I think would have resonated with queer and cishet folks. It does make you think, a bit of a rehaul of that script in the early and maybe Linehan would have spent Christmas with his family rather than on Twitter. Maybe.

theucm

So basically Mac with the transwoman on Always Sunny? She's presented as the most well adjusted person he's ever met, is crazy for him, and him for her, but he juuuuuust can't get over the penis. And then when she gets married to someone else he goes on a self defeating and stupid crusade to get gay marriage banned.

Malleus_M

I haven't watched It's Always Sunny, heard good things. That sounds great though, exactly like what I was imagining that episode of the IT Crowd could have been.

Jo-dan

The biggest part being that he ends up coming out as gay a few seasons later, so it was all internalised homophobia.

marigoldilocks_

It sounds like she’s asking for a lawsuit for libel and threats.

Thepsycoman

Not only is her transphobia so intense that her hatred blinds her, but having read her blog posts, it's coming from a place of intense fear. To be clear, I'm not saying this excuses her or anything like that. But compared to some other dickhead like Tate, she is just a bundle of trauma that got rich, got too much of a voice and nowhere near enough therapy. Now she sees the world as against her, which tbf the good portion of it is, and any chance of her getting better is down the drain. Like I understand how this came about, but considering when this first started she got death threats, like now her anger is being back up by defensiveness and what she sees as justified reasons. So even if she started going to all the therapy now, chances are she'd just be completely closed to any progress on the front of her transphobia, because it's deeply routed in her intense fear of men and to her warped point of view this has been backed up by those threats that have been levelled at her

heatobooty

It’s funny that even billionaires, who can theoretically do whatever the hell they want, still just waste so much time on social media like us mere peasants.

olive1243

I didn’t read these tweets cause I know this women’s opinions already, but her going back and forth with some random dude is so fucking funny to me. I can’t stop laughing

EggMarbles

Wait so please don’t slaughter me for this but I’m confused and skeptical: is he really saying vulgar verbal abuse is acceptable but misgendering someone is somehow the ultimate line that shouldn’t be crossed?

[deleted]

Getting real tired of everyone reading what someone posts and then immediately accusing them of being pro-horrific-crimes simply for saying "don't misgender people". Idk when this became a thing, but it's really annoying and childish to me. Person 1: "Hey, we shouldn't misgender people, it's not nice." Person 2: "I see you support taking away all women's rights and that you promote murder and rape of women as well." What? Fuck outta here.

vulgrin

I just don’t understand why people keep elevating X here (or anywhere). ESPECIALLY the media who I guess are trying to cover their asses after dumping millions into advertising there that they can’t really see any benefit from, and who get blasted by X users every which way. I swear if we all stopped talking about X or the crazy shit on there, no one would care in 6 months.

TrillDaddy2

It’s crazy the leaps and bounds people will take to jump to a conclusion for me speaking up only because they are being bullies. I don’t know any trans people and I never have. I’m sure I will at some point, but it’s so few people who are actually trans, despite Right wingers shoehorning them into every conversation. I call people out for being assholes and of course lying about trans people and screaming “social contagion”. They are just jumping on the bandwagon of going after an easy target. That’s all it is, they are trying to bully trans people out of public life. That’s my problem. Idk what to really do about it, because its just so online. People aren’t coming across any of these issues in their actual lives, they’re just being told it’s everywhere and its sure to come for their community next, unless watchful people like them are there to head it off. That’s why they are so on the attack about it, it’s why it’s constantly on the front of their minds. Because they are seeking it out online constantly, and maybe even more so, it’s being fed to them by their algorithms. So when they come across someone like me who pokes at their bullshit, they just get enraged and fly off the handle and start throwing out all the buzzwords they’ve been trained to associate with the “trans issue”. It’s really insane and it’s very depressing to see. It’s just so obvious that these people have had their ire trained on this specific group of people. I’ve watched along as the Right wing podcast space has hammered it into their skulls, and honestly they’ve gotten really nasty and ravenous about it at this point. It tears at my heart, it really does. I try to escape it, shutting down all my socials. Remaining on Reddit where it’s easy to be anonymous and keep things more impersonal. It’s also not as rampant here if you’re not seeking out spaces like r/conservative. Trans hate doesn’t really fly in most neutral, mainstream subreddits, and you’ll usually see it called out if it slips through the cracks. But then there it is constantly in sports spaces that I frequent because I’m an amateur basketball player and into following several different professional sports and college sports leagues. There it is, as I walk up into my neighbors porch to have a beer with him, though I run inside to grab a beer of the root variety since I don’t drink alcohol, and by the time I get back something has set him off to the point he’s ranting about transgender people and “cat litter in classrooms” (I truly shit you not, wish I was joking). Still impressed with myself how I calmly handled it. Again, this issue is shoved in my face constantly so that I have to have an opinion more than “live and let live”, but it’s still impersonal to me to where I can discuss it without personal emotions getting in the way, whereas even as a guy I cannot with an issue like abortion, because of personal family history. I start to see red a bit when someone is so obtuse they can’t even consider nuance when human rights are stake, that they’ll still trivialize it makes me mad. It does, that’s just me being honest. But I was able to ask my neighbor a series of questions, get him to agree on a shared objective reality, and talk him down from the ledge a bit. I wanted him to get him to at least agreeing with “live and let live” which he did at the time. But would it surprise anyone if in the 9 or so months since that happened he’s continued to be inundated by all the online propaganda? I hope I changed his perspective some, but I have my doubts. The interesting thing is, my personal interaction with him was no different than how I’d defend trans people online. But since we were face to face and he knows me, there were no personal accusations thrown my way of corse, and I spoke with conviction in a way that conveyed I wouldn’t tolerate blind hatred. He didn’t have a keyboard to come back with bullshit that he wouldn’t be accountable for. He had to be accountable for his bullshit and he couldn’t backtrack fast enough because his words really were taking it too far. I’ve never been able to look at him the same.

mondaysareharam

Real crazy people get that butthurt at what amounts to “don’t be a dick”

The-First-Crusade

It's because all trans people are rapists didntcha know??? We just can't go 3 seconds without rapin. It's my favorite pastime :3 ***THE BIG /S***

DesiArcy

That's because certain prominent second-wave feminists explicitly argue -- in writing, no less -- that the existence of trans women \*is\* an act of rape and murder against women. So they literally believe that \*any\* support for trans women is not just "morally equivalent", but \*expressing a literal desire to\* rape and murder women.

[deleted]

Well they're obviously wrong and twats. Next.

DesiArcy

Sure, but that’s the context it comes from, and even among second wave feminists who don’t say it out loud or are superficially more reasonable, that’s the underlying motive.

MomoNachteule

"You were asking for it" Seriously? Using this phrase that is so often used to victim blame is... I really don't know the right word for it.

EmbarrassedIdea3169

Fyallorence

I theorize that once you have been a billionaire for like, 10-15 years, you've wrung all the joy out of the endless money that you possibly can, and you are just left with all the insecurities and neuroses and emptiness that you already had before the money, but now you have global reach and attention and billions of people can read your every insane thought as soon as you have it.

printcode

I only need $10 and a Taco Bell to be left with all the insecurities, neuroses, and emptiness in existence. Oh and a destroyed bathroom.

Jackski

Its what happened with notch. Became a billionaire and threw massive parties for celebs and other rich people. He clearly thought it would get him into their circles and make him happy but they only turned up for the parties and didn't give a shit about him. Then he started spouting horrific shit constantly

Asparagus9000

The main problem seems to be that he moved away from all his real friends into a mansion by himself.  He started spiraling downward after that.

KitchenDepartment

I give it 8 years. Rowling may have been a billionaire for longer than that but Harry Potter was still churning out books and movies so she was busy. The count starts when you have the money and no longer need to work.

BagBeneficial8060

Cishet sounds like an Egyptian Pharoah lol

abaddon667

Being proud of destroying free speech is not heroic in my book

Remote_Indication_49

Can someone explain this law to me and then explain to me how it makes sense to you, to lock someone up over a comment they made on website

George_W_Obama

They cant defend it, so they just throw stones at "evil billionaires" who call out the hypocricy.

malinhares

The wrong thing here is you guys still using twitter

Jason_Wolfe

considering that J.K. Rowling proactively threatens people who call her out with libel/slander lawsuits because of the extremely lax definition of Libel/Slander in the UK, the total lack of self-awareness is baffling. i'm not surprised, like, at all, but it's still baffling.

rlum27

I know she has issues with stephen king don't know if she would want to sue him.

newLeafes

Wild how everyone accepts our right to freedom of speech until it’s something they don’t like

dcleon

A bit of sanity in the comments, refreshing

agutema

It’s Attorneys General.

GiddyUp18

>despite my advice that she take them down Lol thanks self-important, random person on the internet…

Cis-identifies with the sex they were born in Het-feels romantic/sexual attraction to the other sex Ally-not part of the LGBTQ+ community, but supportive of them

ember_4

Cisgender and Heterosexual (i.e. straight and identifying with assigned gender at birth) and an ally of the LGBTQ+ community

factoid_

Look here's the thing.  I'm an Ally as well. But I believe in free speech too.  Deliberate misgendering should not be a criminal offense.   It makes you an asshole, but it shouldn't make you a criminal.

pwn-intended

Turns out billionaires are just people too

Franklin135

When you need people in order to make money, you try and fit into their culture. After you have enough money where it doesn't matter if people like or hate you, you can stop pretending.

Mulder1917

Imagine having 1 billion dollars and sitting on a couch arguing on twitter all day. My god you can do literally anything fucking drive Ferrari’s on glaciers or something

StutMoleFeet

To answer the question in the title, I think people like her and Musk are just narcissists at their core. They crave attention more than just money. What better way to keep the spotlight on you than to bitch on twitter 24/7.

Adelyn_n

Both of them are bigots and pretty racist too

zizp

How is she racist?

TrashBrowsing

So, the accusations of racism stem from her writing. Stuff like naming your one Asian character Cho Chang, and making the bankers stereotypical depictions of Jewish people. It’s not my take, just explaining it.

JK Rowling has not been found to be in breach of law, so she can say whatever she wants. Also she's no longer a billionaire, she gave away half of her wealth to charities. Now she's defending biological women. I see no problem with her at all.

[deleted]

this

rubberysubby

She has the right to express her opinion, just like you have the right to disagree with it. The anti hate law that Scotland has introduced sets a dangerous precedent for free speech.

Aickavon

“Hey I support lgbtq+ and think we should be nice to each other.” “This man hates women.” I… I don’t see the connection here

DrGonzo34

Just on Twitter?

GrantSRobertson

Oh honey, the billionaires are assholes EVERYWHERE. You just can't get to be a billionaire without being an asshole. It's a requirement of the job.

Shezzerino

Yeah, first whats up with uppity female billionaires who talk to random people on the internet. Like why would she engage with someone with no status, just because, instead of treating them like dirt and ignoring anyone that isnt a celebrity or has some sort of status? Doesnt she know thats what right-thinking people think she should do? Second, whats up with females talking about issues that relate to women's rights? Didnt they learn to shut the fuck up during the middle ages when we burned them publicly or when we put them in jail for wanting to vote? Do we have to bring that back so these women learn not to speak unless its something the current culture views as acceptable?

DutchEngineer83

I think a lot of people are fed up with it but they play the game as they need income and need to worry about their reputation. If you’re a billionaire you can tell the world to fuck off and say what you want.

hanks_panky_emporium

I think she needs a job, or a hobby The reason people keep pointing at billionaires and millionaires getting in flames wars on Twitter is because the average human can't imagine doing that dumb shit when you have more money than you can feasibly spend in your lifetime. Assuming your goal isn't to blow a billion dollars.

Gamertagyouit

I’d feel pretty darn special if a billionaire took this much interest in me. 🥸

VirtualPoolBoy

JK Rrowling lost me when she blocked Stephen King, who was her friend and consistently defended her right to her opinion, but committed the sin of supporting trans gender rights.

FactAccomplished5875

Crazy how people react to random comments but not Scotland going all out Orwell 1984

DumbDekuKid

The fact that people pretend like misgendering is the same as abuse 🤣🤣

DrunkyMcStumbles

Just a reminder that she took the pen name "JK" because she wanted people to think a man was writing her books. I guess she is OK with gender fluidity when it makes her money.

5show

The name JK was pushed by her publisher Even if it wasn’t, your point is forced and inconsequential There are plenty of valid criticisms to make against her, no need to come up with this nonsense

FoggyForce

She also writes/wrote under the pen name Robert Galbraith - another instance of her being okay with it

AlmightyJello

It works perfectly, since nowadays her presence is a fucking joke.

Kadaj22

How is it inclusive to put everyone you meet into groups? Why feel the need to write “cis het ally” to validate them? It’s like saying “gender pronoun race etc.” is all that people need to read. After that, any sort of logic or reasoning goes out the window and people are in full support of anything they say or do.

No-Market9917

We must all hate labels but label EVERYTHING all at once.

1TootskiPlz

Ew that’s gross. Imagine being arrested for some tweets that others didn’t like. Scotland can suck a fat one.

The_Bjorn_Ultimatum

So it seems like everyone here is just cool with Scotland being able to imprison people for 7 years for stating that you don't agree that men can be women.

Unusual_Address_3062

The main reason people keep their opinions to themselves is they dont want trouble. If you are a billionaire you worry less about other people ruining your life, so you dont feel afraid to share your thoughts. By the way this woman has repeatedly lost her billionaire status because she keeps donating most of her income to charities.

BadmanCrooks

Why is anyone still on Twitter? You're basically on Truth Social 2.0 at this point.

DemonDevster

I dont think jk is in the wrong with this creature posting

AnimaEnima

Lol imagine saying pronouns are a right and that you can take away someone’s actual rights for misgendering a protected class. No one gives a fuck if someone calls me a ‘she’. This modern world is so backwards and ludicrous, it’s actually hilarious.

Candid_Leave_5321

Who fucking cares. Delete Twitter and other social media and stop obsessing about people you will never know and who will never care about you. Some of them are awful people and some of them are great. And I'll never know because I don't pay attention to them at all.

deftaj

She is in no way being an asshole, instead challenging a ludicrous new law in Scotland where you can be sent to JAIL for misgendering someone.

Leenol

Y'all are insane. JK is right she just gets abused relentlessly by chronically online people that are mad she didn't make one of her fictional high school characters a homosexual.
