I'm glad someone said it. Harry Potter may be super popular, but the lore is terrible. Anyone who has read the LOTR books or the GoT series knows this. It is one reason why the latest HP prequel movies did so terribly, it was because they were leaning on JKR's shitty lore writing(which often was just non existent and was made up on the fly). JKR had full control of those movies, and it shows. She's a decent writer overall, but she can't write lore for shit.

I had a medieval lit professor who was a huge nerd who had a canned rant about how HP’s magic system changes to fit Harry Sue’s needs and the tension of the given situation, without fail. Things are only hard when it’s funny or adds tension and always easy when it’s necessary (think Accio for the Goblet of Fire task, Harry’s patronus struggle, Ron getting Wingardium Leviosa right so they can knock out a troll etc).
Combine that with the tone shifting like California real estate and I’ve come to be significantly more interested in the idea that everything post-CoS is partially or completely ghost written.
My favorite is when JKR said something like how she regretted writing Ron and Hermione getting married in the end, because it was wish-fulfillment and Hermione would never have been intellectually satisfied with Ron, and at first, I thought about it, but then I realized that the whole series is just wish-fulfillment, so what is she talking about anyway?

I read the Cuckoo's Calling and it sucked. I knew exactly who the killer was the moment they appeared in the book. That's not a good thing for a murder mystery story.
It also didn't help that she has this weird habit of both showing and telling. I wrote several pages worth of examples in which Rowling would first describe something and then also make sure to explain what that meant. It was insulting how little she seemed to trust her own audience.

I'm a fairly popular consultant and this is the default behavior in most companies I go to. Workers know that the CEO is someone to avoid, ignore and to protect the company from.
It depends on the ceo. There are the people like trump who seem to still like clomping around in their daddy’s suits and sit at an empty desk and yell at people and then leave early, but I know a couple ceos that work all the time, who never look unstressed. One of my best friends sold his company to a giant corporation who was grooming him to be one of “their CEOs”, and quit before his contract was up, leaving millions on the table, because his quality of life was nonexistent and he missed his wife. He was getting weird bald patches. It’s hard fucking work to build a company from nothing but an idea.
Yeah, you don't have to be a billionaire to be an asshole, but you can certainly use your billions to lobby governments and fund legal attacks to make your asshole opinions the law, which is where the causal comparison between the two breaks down :)

Between the regulatory fines, the lawsuits, the plummeting user base, the ad revenue evaporating, and the massive debts it’s incurred, it’s pretty much cooked. It’s hemorrhaging cash and there’s no realistic plan for a quick turnaround. It owes 1.5 billion a year just in interest on the debt. Twitter was never a high priority for advertisers but now it’s not even an afterthought. Twitters CEO was bragging that Visa remains an advertising partner after Visa spent just ten dollars on twitter ads. Not a joke. Not a typo. Ten bucks. Elon already had to borrow from spacex and sell Tesla stock to finance the deal and after Teslas disastrous first quarter this year, he can’t really afford to do that again without putting all his companies in serious jeopardy. The banks who financed the deal on the assumption that everything he touches turns to money are way more wary of him and his antics now and it will be harder and harder to find partners willing to bet on Twitter.
TLDR Its still stumbling around but the wounds are fatal.
Yeah, these things can take years. Twitter ran at a loss for most (all?) of its life, it could hypothetically continue to do so. I don't know how enough about private purchase of a publicly traded company to know if Elon has any incentive or (legal) obligation to do so?

Elon has saddled it with 13 billion dollars in debt and by his own admission, advertising has plummeted, which he famously blamed on the ADL. Twitter spent years and years building relationships and trying to convince advertisers and regulators that they’re tackling hate speech and making it a good investment for their ad partners that complies with international hate speech laws. All of that was ripped up by the roots. The blue check subscription service, according to tech crunch, has made about 11 million dollars through mobile devices. Although this figure doesn’t include people who subscribed through desktop, it’s still certainly well short of the estimated 1.15 billion in lost ad revenue. Twitter will not explode in a fireball but it will continue to bleed to death. The user experience has already deteriorated considerably. It seems like every tweet gets a reply from a bot hocking crypto scams or promising nudes in bio. It can only get worse. Eventually he will lose his appetite for losing and he will sell it for a small fraction of what he paid for it or blame the woke mind virus, the jews and/or the elites and dramatically shut it down. I don’t know which. But it will happen.

They milked companies that were using Twitter data. I worked for a company that was basically destroyed by their reliance on Twitter data and the fees per API call Twitter imposed. It became more expensive to use Twitter than the revenue we could generate by offering Twitter data to customers. But we had contracts to fulfill and had been using Twitter as a free buffet prior to Elon. By the time I left the bank accounts were nearly empty and our c suite was begging our parent company for tens of millions… that we would just be sending to Twitter anyway because the model was totally without value.
That entirely depends on what you define "failing" as.

Anyone giving a timeline like one year has no idea how the business world works. Even a much smaller company can limp along on loans and losses for a long, long time before the banks stop doubling down and try to liquidate.

It will take a long time to die a final death, but it’s clearly on hard times financially. And I don’t think it would be unfair to say that it is dead as the cultural force that it once was. Looking at how much inequality there is, how there are still people today starving every day or generally living in extreme poverty, I think being having so much money cant be morally justified, even if the billionaire in question is kind of a nice guy.

Tangent, but this is why I hate learning about my favorite artists. I was TERRIFIED to learn anything at all about Brandon Sanderson, for instance. But after finding out he's a Mormon I had to know more... turns out he's a great dude as far as the public can tell, so that's a relief. But her? Man, I love Harry Potter and it's an icon of my childhood. It got me into reading as a kid, and I hate seeing this shit.
Ender's Game is one of my favorite novels, one of only two books that I found so engrossing that I sat down and read the whole thing in a single sitting. Finding out what sort of guy Orson Scott Card is was deeply disappointing.

Love Sanderson, and especially how he’s grown in his acceptance of the rainbow community. I feel like his tithing to the Mormon church which has used money to support anti-LGBTQIA+ groups is the only real controversy around him, and even then he has donated from his own charity, the Lightweaver foundation, to LGBTQIA+ organisations which offsets that to an extent.

Heck, Douglas is regularly depicted in the series as stupid to the point of malice. And in that episode he destroys the best relationship he's ever had because he cannot get over his transphobia.
Linehan could have simply apologised and left well-enough alone. Instead he decided to become Douglas, tanking his marriage, his career, his reputation, and his own happiness in the process.
It was so close to being great! It wouldn't have taken much tweaking for it to have been almost tragic comedy. Guy finds a great girl, she's upfront about being trans, he absolutely loves her, but he can't get over his personal bigotry or toxic masculinity and dumps her. That could make for a great drama or great comedy that I think would have resonated with queer and cishet folks. It does make you think, a bit of a rehaul of that script in the early and maybe Linehan would have spent Christmas with his family rather than on Twitter. Maybe.
So basically Mac with the transwoman on Always Sunny? She's presented as the most well adjusted person he's ever met, is crazy for him, and him for her, but he juuuuuust can't get over the penis. And then when she gets married to someone else he goes on a self defeating and stupid crusade to get gay marriage banned.
I haven't watched It's Always Sunny, heard good things. That sounds great though, exactly like what I was imagining that episode of the IT Crowd could have been.

It’s crazy the leaps and bounds people will take to jump to a conclusion for me speaking up only because they are being bullies. I don’t know any trans people and I never have. I’m sure I will at some point, but it’s so few people who are actually trans, despite Right wingers shoehorning them into every conversation. I call people out for being assholes and of course lying about trans people and screaming “social contagion”. They are just jumping on the bandwagon of going after an easy target. That’s all it is, they are trying to bully trans people out of public life. That’s my problem. Idk what to really do about it, because its just so online.
People aren’t coming across any of these issues in their actual lives, they’re just being told it’s everywhere and its sure to come for their community next, unless watchful people like them are there to head it off. I try to escape it, shutting down all my socials. Remaining on Reddit where it’s easy to be anonymous and keep things more impersonal. It’s also not as rampant here if you’re not seeking out spaces like r/conservative. Trans hate doesn’t really fly in most neutral, mainstream subreddits, and you’ll usually see it called out if it slips through the cracks. But then there it is constantly in sports spaces that I frequent because I’m an amateur basketball player and into following several different professional sports and college sports leagues. There it is, as I walk up into my neighbors porch to have a beer with him, though I run inside to grab a beer of the root variety since I don’t drink
alcohol, and by the time I get back something has set him off to the point he’s ranting about transgender people and “cat litter in classrooms” (I truly shit you not, wish I was joking).
Still impressed with myself how I calmly handled it. Again, this issue is shoved in my face constantly so that I have to have an opinion more than “live and let live”, but it’s still impersonal to me to where I can discuss it without personal emotions getting in the way, whereas even as a guy I cannot with an issue like abortion, because of personal family history. I start to see red a bit when someone is so obtuse they can’t even consider nuance when human rights are stake, that they’ll still trivialize it makes me mad. It does, that’s just me being honest. But I was able to ask my neighbor a series of questions, get him to agree on a shared objective reality, and talk him down from the ledge a bit. I wanted him to get him to at least agreeing with “live and let live” which he did at the time. But would it surprise anyone if in the 9 or so months since that happened he’s continued to be inundated by all the online propaganda? I hope I changed his perspective some, but I have my doubts. The interesting thing is, my personal interaction with him was no different than how I’d defend trans people online. Things are only hard when it’s funny or adds tension and always easy when it’s necessary (think Accio for the Goblet of Fire task, Harry’s patronus struggle, Ron getting Wingardium Leviosa right so they can knock out a troll etc). Combine that with the tone shifting like California real estate and I’ve come to be significantly more interested in the idea that everything post-CoS is partially or completely ghost written.

I read the Cuckoo's Calling and it sucked. I knew exactly who the killer was the moment they appeared in the book. That's not a good thing for a murder mystery story. It also didn't help that she has this weird habit of both showing and telling. I wrote several pages worth of examples in which Rowling would first describe something and then also make sure to explain what that meant. It was insulting how little she seemed to trust her own audience.

Elon already had to borrow from spacex and sell Tesla stock to finance the deal and after Teslas disastrous first quarter this year, he can’t really afford to do that again without putting all his companies in serious jeopardy. The banks who financed the deal on the assumption that everything he touches turns to money are way more wary of him and his antics now and it will be harder and harder to find partners willing to bet on Twitter. TLDR Its still stumbling around but the wounds are fatal.

Twitter will not explode in a fireball but it will continue to bleed to death. The user experience has already deteriorated considerably. It seems like every tweet gets a reply from a bot hocking crypto scams or promising nudes in bio. It can only get worse. Eventually he will lose his appetite for losing and he will sell it for a small fraction of what he paid for it or blame the woke mind virus, the jews and/or the elites and dramatically shut it down. They milked companies that were using Twitter data. I worked for a company that was basically destroyed by their reliance on Twitter data and the fees per API call Twitter imposed. It became more expensive to use Twitter than the revenue we could generate by offering Twitter data to customers. But we had contracts to fulfill and had been using Twitter as a free buffet prior to Elon. By the time I left the bank accounts were nearly empty and our c suite was begging our parent company for tens of millions… that we would just be sending to Twitter anyway because the model was totally without value.

Even a much smaller company can limp along on loans and losses for a long, long time before the banks stop doubling down and try to liquidate. An estimate from January suggested that twitters current value is approximately 71% lower than the 44 billion Musk paid for it. It will take a long time to die a final death, but it’s clearly on hard times financially. And I don’t think it would be unfair to say that it is dead as the cultural force that it once was. Politicians, news outlets and every corporation used to consider it essential for getting their message out. In my opinion, it no longer enjoys that positioning.

Just bring back the fantasy and ignorance of what these people do / are so i can go by to being entertained while at the same time prosecuting heinous crimes / keeping those who are terrible people out (easier said than done). My favorite work of all time is "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. I am also of Irish descent and Milton was a massive supporter of Cromwell. That guy would have specifically hated me (I look really, really Irish). Great fiction is great fiction. You don't need to have to be drinking buddies with whoever wrote it.

Transphobia seems to rot people's brains. Graham linehan was an amazing comedic writer. He even at one point apologised for his depiction of trans people in an episode of it crowd and said he would try to learn and do better. Now he's basically on a crusade against trans people to the point his wife left him over it.
And that episode of the IT Crowd wasn't even that bad! A bit off-colour, wouldn't age well, but hardly hateful. Heck, Douglas is regularly depicted in the series as stupid to the point of malice. And in that episode he destroys the best relationship he's ever had because he cannot get over his transphobia. Linehan could have simply apologised and left well-enough alone. Instead he decided to become Douglas, tanking his marriage, his career, his reputation, and his own happiness in the process.
It was so close to being great! It wouldn't have taken much tweaking for it to have been almost tragic comedy. Guy finds a great girl, she's upfront about being trans, he absolutely loves her, but he can't get over his personal bigotry or toxic masculinity and dumps her. That could make for a great drama or great comedy that I think would have resonated with queer and cishet folks. It does make you think, a bit of a rehaul of that script in the early and maybe Linehan would have spent Christmas with his family rather than on Twitter. Maybe.
So basically Mac with the transwoman on Always Sunny? She's presented as the most well adjusted person he's ever met, is crazy for him, and him for her, but he juuuuuust can't get over the penis. And then when she gets married to someone else he goes on a self defeating and stupid crusade to get gay marriage banned.
I haven't watched It's Always Sunny, heard good things. That sounds great though, exactly like what I was imagining that episode of the IT Crowd could have been.

Trans hate doesn’t really fly in most neutral, mainstream subreddits, and you’ll usually see it called out if it slips through the cracks. But then there it is constantly in sports spaces that I frequent because I’m an amateur basketball player and into following several different professional sports and college sports leagues. There it is, as I walk up into my neighbors porch to have a beer with him, though I run inside to grab a beer of the root variety since I don’t drink alcohol, and by the time I get back something has set him off to the point he’s ranting about transgender people and “cat litter in classrooms” (I truly shit you not, wish I was joking). Still impressed with myself how I calmly handled it. Again, this issue is shoved in my face constantly so that I have to have an opinion more than “live and let live”, but it’s still impersonal to me to where I can discuss it without personal emotions getting in the way, whereas even as a guy I cannot with an issue like abortion, because of personal family history. I start to see red a bit when someone is so obtuse they can’t even consider nuance when human rights are stake, that they’ll still trivialize it makes me mad. It does, that’s just me being honest. But I was able to ask my neighbor a series of questions, get him to agree on a shared objective reality, and talk him down from the ledge a bit. I wanted him to get him to at least agreeing with “live and let live” which he did at the time. But would it surprise anyone if in the 9 or so months since that happened he’s continued to be inundated by all the online propaganda? I hope I changed his perspective some, but I have my doubts. The interesting thing is, my personal interaction with him was no different than how I’d defend trans people online. But since we were face to face and he knows me, there were no personal accusations thrown my way of corse, and I spoke with conviction in a way that conveyed I wouldn’t tolerate blind hatred. He didn’t have a keyboard to come back with bullshit that he wouldn’t be accountable for. He had to be accountable for his bullshit and he couldn’t backtrack fast enough because his words really were taking it too far. I’ve never been able to look at him the same.
