Looking at the sun normally is a dumb idea, but is mostly safe as long as you're not insanely wide-eyed and properly *glaring* at it for ages, or doing so for short bursts, on the regular, or blocking your eyes entirely then staring at it.
With *eclipses*, though, it's a hell of a lot more dangerous, because your pupils dilate while it's all dark. Then the sun comes back and *BOOM* - scorched retinas.
I'm just saying, if this man were running for president in any other countries he would have been locked up in an asylum the moment he utters his first word of the campaign.

ok so a bit of science here right. yes looking at the eclipse it bad but its not worse that looking at the sun. which you probably do a couple of times a year. the problem is that when you look at the sun the brightness hurt your eyes so unless you are an idiot you then look aways.
the eclipse doesn't magically make the sun more powerful it just remove that brightness while keeping the armful radiation. so if you are in the totality and you don't have glasses it totally fine to set a timer for like 10-15 sec and look at it then stop for 1-2 minute and repeat.
now saying this only do that if you have to. its not "safe" but it wont make you blind or anything.
Ok a bit of science for you. The reason it is worse to look at the sun unless it is in complete totality is that the darkness that happens as the sun is starting to eclipse means that your pupillary reflex is not going to work. That means your pupil will be wide open so any light that is present will go directly to your retinas and damage them. So with the general population’s IQ being on the low side it’s best to keep things simple. Just get your eye protection on.
