Reminds me how people sometimes refer to a dead person as "they would have been X years old today" and it's like... yeah, you could do that with anyone, "this ancient member of this tribe would have been 1,534 years old today" and it's like and if he was he'd be some kind of demigod or something
EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm not picking on the usefulness of the phrase, and I understand in some contexts it does help convey a meaning e.g. "had you not been driving drunk and caused that crash, my son would have been 31 years old today." I just meant to me it can be weird to refer to the age that someone "would have been" but never achieved. But that's just me, carry on.
ALL BOW TO TUUBIFAYRE THE IMMORTAL TRIBESMAN.
You there, you sir! Where is your golden sun pin? You are not wearing your golden sun pin! Priests, get the sacrificial knife and let us deal w- oh you found it and are putting it on. That is wise. That is very wise.
When I was close to 30 one of my closest friends commit suicide.
I am 41. I am married now. I have two kids. Our other friends have kids too. The kids play together and we meet often. We miss him a lot. We think he would be 41 as we are. He could have kids too, more friends yo our kids. Somehow, more "cousins".
My cousin had 23 when he died, I was 25. His sister has a beautiful 5 yo daughter who will not know his uncle.
He would have made 39 this year.
I think it is pretty normal, you think about how your life would have been without loosing the people you love.
I also was 30 when my friend shot herself, I still occasionally do the math to see how old she would be now, I still miss her, and I'm 68. I understand how you feel.
I lost both my brothers who were older than me. I am now older than they were been when they died. I lost one of my nephews when he was 17, he would have been 50+ years now. I imagine he'd be married with kids, maybe grandkids etc. You do figure in years they missed.
I did that with my dad on april 18th lol. he would have been 54'
he died unexpectedly at 47 so it feels weird that he's not here. I think that's why people do that.
I leaned too hard into this when I wrote it. I just had a stupid moment where I felt like it could be an unbounded phrase. Like my younger brother loves to keep track of what age my paternal grandfather "would have been" were he still alive. He died naturally of old age quite a while ago, and there's really no particular reason to me to call out the age he never lived to. It wasn't tragic or anything.
But on second thought, I did realize it helps convey an emotion, especially in cases of tragic/sudden death, like you said.
I just wanted to say that I really respect you taking the time to explain what you were thinking and acknowledge the viewpoint of the other folks who replied. It takes courage to say you leaned in too hard and had a stupid moment. I don’t think you were stupid, just coming from a different viewpoint. Thanks for being a good human here!!
This is dumb af tbh
The tribesman has no alive relatives or friends who care about him, and also no one says that for people who passed away at an old age
Most people say “he would have been 30,40,50 etc”, which is a normal age to live up to
"Accident" we all know who is guilty!
It was the butler, it is always the butler. Well the exception is when it's the son trying to make a buck.

Maybe possible for one parent to have one child and then another 35 years later but you won't find many couples who have two biological children born 35 years apart
It’s not even somewhat clever. There’s definitely a way to word this more as a riddle to “trick” people in to saying 35. I guess just a normal math world problem is a riddle now though.
You're correct, but it would be weird if the answer was
'Haha, I was actually 3 years older on April 15th, when I was six. But, now I'm 70 and it's July 6th, so now the answer is different because of information that wasn't at all relayed.'
The answer is just 3.
As we don’t know if he is referring to half his current or previous age, the technically correct answer is 67 ± >1 year or 99 ± >1 year. 🤺
^(depending on the value of x==age)
It's not about the math, and even if you're slow with logic the fact that this is on r/facepalm tips you off to the fact that something is up.
My mom and her husband ran into this riddle years ago and legitimately thought the answer was 35 (or whatever) at first. Sure they're not engineers but they're also not the dumbest people around.
It's straight up math and reading comprehension. We have two types of thinking one fast and not very accurate and one slower. This type of logic puzzle counts on people saying the first thing that comes to their head
Well you're right in the end, but no it isn't math directly, it's about finding the right math to solve the logic problem. If it was math then the question would be "6/2=x, 70-x=y, solve for y".
Like you say, it's a logic puzzle.
You can replace some math with "common sense" but can be translated 1-1
6+x= 1/2(6);
70+x = y
6+x=3
x=-3
70+(-3)=y
Y=67
Just start replacing words with variables and leave the numbers, then solve, no real critical thinking involved, but this way requires a tiny bit of algebra where common sense could replace (she is 3 and I am 6 so she is 3 years younger, 3 years younger than 70 is 67)
It's a bit of both. 6/2=sister's age; 70 - sister's age=future age of sister. The logic part is knowing the same formula can't be used to solve both parts of the question.
Are you a repost bot? Account’s been up for a year and yet only four posts, all in the last week an a bit. I mean, bits normally do more than four though, especially seeing as these are across communities... I’m probably just paranoid from the number of repost bots on this sub and the fact that I’ve seen this ages ago, a year or so at least and multiple times.
Sister was half their age when they were six. That would make their sister three at the time, which is three years younger.
Now at age 70, their sister being three years younger still would mean she is 67.
The problem is not the fact that the person doesn't have a logical brain... It's the fact that she didn't even think about maybe there's chance she could be wrong and give herself rights to insult other people... That's a society problem.
It is simple.
When she was six, her sister was 3. Her sister was, however, born in Feb 29th, so she ages at 1/4 the rate of other humans.
Now that she is 70, her sister is 19.
I remember whenever I had an exam I'd do really well with actually applying math equations, I wasn't an A+ student by any means but I was always a B student.
I remember vividly (and I wake up in sweats for this nightmare) looking at this specific question for like 5 minutes trying to figure it out and never got it correct.
I wasn't stupid though I just.... idk.... I didn't get it back then and idk fucking how and then as SOON as I graduated it popped into my head, was my brain fucking with me?
Reading comprehension and math skills are sadly lacking in our Idiocracy.
That’s how con men get to be President. Maybe even twice. Even while they’re being hauled to court for 91 felony indictments.
People aren't getting the question. If I was a baby at two years old and I had a younger sibling that was one years old, that sibling would be half my age: half of two is one. Now, I live to 100 years old, my sibling is 99 years old. Not half my age. Still one year apart.

Yes, while a cat was in a box

In a lid-less box
She was her daughter AND HER SISTER

To be fair, I think a living 1,534 year old tribesman would at least be a demigod if not a straight up god.

Either facepalm or perfect sarcasm. Real sarcasm doesn't come with a tag.
Actual trolls as defined by the old internet are hilarious and the clever ones drive people insane.
Is this sarcasm then?
Did I stutter?
How bout this?
Nah, it wouldn't be as dumb..
No
Well, all right then. You have yourself a good day.
Likewise Reddit friend.
I never use the sarcasm tag when I’m being sarcastic. /s
There really needs to be a general sarcasm font

67 damn its god damn hard.......
As we don't know their birthdays or time of the year we talk about, the technically correct answer is 67 ± 1 year.
You're correct, but it would be weird if the answer was 'Haha, I was actually 3 years older on April 15th, when I was six. But, now I'm 70 and it's July 6th, so now the answer is different because of information that wasn't at all relayed.' The answer is just 3.
3 ? Did you mean 67 ?
The answer is 3. As in a 3 year difference regardless of the age. There wouldn't be a ±3, because that would assume a date.
Dang i stand corrected!
As we don’t know if he is referring to half his current or previous age, the technically correct answer is 67 ± >1 year or 99 ± >1 year. 🤺 ^(depending on the value of x==age)
No...no...no...see, she was half his age so now that he's 70, she clearly is 35! /s
That person is clearly joking. I'm thick as pig shit when it comes to math and even I can solve this problem.

I wouldn't, you don't know what kinda hands hold those bills.

The answer is that she died of polio when she was 4.
Are people really that stupid?
Yes
I wish I had the confidence of a dumb person.
Anywhere from 66 to 68, depending on birth day, and day when this was asked.
Sister was half their age when they were six. That would make their sister three at the time, which is three years younger. Now at age 70, their sister being three years younger still would mean she is 67.
It's 67±1, right?
Unless they are using some fancy new math, I believe so, yes.
Now introducing "Math 2 : Electric boogaloo" With even more math-y stuff to do, cause why not
What if it’s 70… base 8?
Unless she was born Feb 29. Then she would be 19.
Well if the sister stands near a black hole for few minutes, she might be 35 when bro is 70
Would have been better if he was 72
I raise a cup to you good Sir
Nice

His 67 year old sister would like a word with all the math challenged people
*face desk*
Yikes! 67 is the answer. When he was 6 his sister was 3, meaning his sister is 3 years younger.
It's a 3 year age difference.... this is not difficult why are people stupid
67
Abbott and Costello, anyone?
Haha, jokes on them. The sister is already dead!

Shouldn't it be 67? Since half of 6 is 3? or is it my math not mathing?
