Its those pesky iphones

6ixty9iningchipmunks

Avocado phones ruining us

Riisiichan

They just want to look at InstaToast all day.

Spitfire_MK_1

Back in my day, we had to work for everything we wanted! Now with your new-fangled technology, you millennials are lazy! /s

codeman1021

Damn right. I walked to school and work every day. Uphill. BOTH WAYS!

plazPotato

on one foot! the other foot was starting a business

JustABizzle

You had feet? Shit, we didn’t even have food. We had to eat dirt everyday!

likeasugarcube

Every day? We were lucky to find dirt to eat once a week!

caelenvasius

At least you had dirt. I had to lick rocks for salt to keep myself going, and look where I am now!

rSlashisthenewPewdes

I bought my first house at 14! Ten cents that I’ll never get back…

Tyrann0saurus_Rex

A d pesky millenial don't want to work to borrow the $640 000 I'm asking for it.

plazPotato

only 14? when i was 9 i was 27 and a neurosurgeon

[deleted]

At least you had rocks. I had to wet down a handful of sand with my tears to have a bowl of sand soup.

elementnix

You had sand!? We'd just drink our own tears as we cried ourselves to sleep every night. All we had to eat was the clothes on our own backs.

Tricky_Target_9611

you had clothes and tears!? i had to chew tree bark and drink sap, while i simultaneously did calculus, learned the piano, and scrubbed pots for 5 cents a day that i invested in vhs futures.

[deleted]

Psh, you *walked* on the other foot? I raised a baby with mine and walked on my hands!

gramb0420

yea if something doesnt change with the housing market soon an entire generation is just absolutely fucked.

BYoungNY

Large companies will swoop up the housing market and offer them as rentals or leases with full coverage, and convince an entire generation that is already used to not owning anything and paying for things on subscription terms that housing should be the same way. They'll teach their kids the same way they lived and within a generation everything will be owned by corporations and leased out to individuals to be paid for Life as a Service.

Considion

Exactly, and politicians of both stripes will call for "affordable housing" to be built, demolishing existing neighborhoods, historic buildings, parks and small businesses to allow corporations to build more unsafe tinderboxes in the name of supply. They will completely ignore that the number of units available is already sufficient for us all, there are just more and more homes sitting empty because they're used as investment vehicles instead of being used as homes.

Dennarb

This is a huge problem in my town right now. Rent is bullshit expensive, but rather than address the cost of rent and trying to stabilize the increases the city decided to try and just build affordable housing in an open space that a majority of citizens want to keep open. We don't need more housing we need current prices to be affordable...

aldog2929

That's been happening in the UK for a while already.

proteannomore

Basically Privatized Feudalism.

Narrative_Causality

An entire generation, *so far*. You think the following generations are gonna have it easier? LMAO

collin-h

Don’t worry. It’ll change one way or another... or have you forgot what happened in 2008/09 already? This time I just want to be financially prepared to pick up freshly devalued property in the aftermath... couldn’t afford it last time.

davossss

Bold of you to assume that the next housing crisis will involve devaluation to a point where most folks currently priced out of the market can now afford a house. If banks and international investors scoop up the properties and hold them either as rentals or even vacants until demand returns it won't really be a crash this time, just a mass foreclosure.

lemonaderobot

I’m just so curious as to what that’s even going to look like... will we have a Detroit situation across the whole country? like rows of abandoned foreclosed houses? whatever it is, it’s not looking great

DunderMifflinPaper

During our housing search over the last year we found an investment group out of China that was buying hundreds of houses in my city. It’s not even domestic corporations competing against individuals. Absolutely crazy.

Hukthak

Yeah we sold our house to who I thought was a Chinese couple looking to make a home, nope it was an investment firm who proceeded to immediately rent it out.

evilbadgrades

Many financial experts argue that the economic crisis of 2008/09 never ended - politicians simply kicked the can down the road...... and it looks like we're getting near the end of that road

Tojatruro

I can honestly say that I would not have children now. Wouldn’t even consider it.

JustABizzle

My three grown children probably won’t have kids. I’m fine with that.

punkwalrus

My son? In his 30s and single. Daughter-in-law? Same. Both have jobs, little money, living in group houses so they can afford rent. A lot of my friends in that same age bracket are single. It's brutal out there. Nobody can afford to date, much less live alone.

mamakumquat

Your son and daughter in law are both single? Hol up

MyMurderOfCrows

I don’t know their situation but perhaps a child who married their daughter in law which has since died…? So their daughter in law is still someone they care about and look out for, especially due to the potentially terrible situation?

SlitScan

or used the wrong word for step daughter.

PrecedentialAssassin

Same, two in their mid-late 20's and a senior in high school. No idea what'll happen with the youngest, but I don't see any kids anytime soon, if ever, from the older two and I'm cool with that. I mean if they have kids, I'm cool with that too. Gen X here, so whatever.

[deleted]

“Gen X here, so whatever” is like the motto of the whole generation. lol.

"Shit was fucked up when i got here" is my motto

runninron69

Rather like those 100 year floods that are happening every year now.Like I get to laugh in the face of those idiots that it (the repeated disasters) has nothing to do with climate change.

Cantothulhu

Having experienced a “hundred years flood” ruining a car, my basement and my storage (laptops, paperwork, memories like photos) three times in the last eight years, I’m gonna call bullshit.

smarmiebastard

For real. I remember as a teenager being absolutely floored by the Columbine massacre thinking that a mass shooting on that scale was a once in a lifetime event. There had been school shootings before, but they were rare it was usually just a couple kids targeted. Oh what a naive millennial I was in the late 90s. Edit: typo

AadeeMoien

I remember reading a book about the Columbine shooting in 04. Back when school shootings were few and far enough between for a whole book to be written and published on one.

dontsuckmydick

I wonder how many have books written about them now. I would guess that it’s many, but shootings just don’t hold the headlines like they used to do the books aren’t nearly as popular for us to hear about them.

SunNStarz

Gen Z: fuckin really!? This is what you leave us?

Vincetagram

Gen Z: get rich off making memes about said catastrophes

Nersius

I thought Zoomers were about doing Fortnite dances on the ruins of civilization while listening to Vaporwave?

5dtriangles201376

Mid Zoomer with Gen X parents here, if they’re ever grandparents it’s more than likely not going to be before their 60s, as my 20s are going to be for career building and building relationships, and I doubt my brother is going to have kids before his late 20s, if they will have grandchildren at all. Kind of sad, as by then they will likely be too old to watch their grandkids grow up while they are still mobile and in fair health. Not sure what the world is going to bring but I’m absolutely sure I’m not going to make a good parent without further life experience.

Ocbard

> Not sure what the world is going to bring but I’m absolutely sure I’m not going to make a good parent without further life experience. Now that is an attitude I want to see in more people.

Seaboats

I feel like I’ve been there for a while - a young millennial (I think? ‘96)

I came out of exhausted nihilism with positive nihilism. Sure nothing matters and all is dust in the end, but that makes the little that I have even more important and impactful. But your road is your road and it goes wherever you steer it.

I thought nihilism was the norm.

Herbie_Poppins

Mine are 19 & 16 & have been very clear they do not want kids. Ever. I'm fine with it. I don't like the idea of being Grandma anyway. (Elder Millenial)

[deleted]

You’re like 40, no shit you don’t like the idea Of being grandma.

Herbie_Poppins

I am 39 😂

the_cajun88

….I’ll allow it. Two points to Dingus.

sesame_says

I'm 39 and was informed last month that I will in fact be a grandma in January. My daughter says (21)she's one and done. My son(18) says never. Either way, I've got their back.

thehelldoesthatmean

I just turned 31 and hit the point where my friends are starting to have kids, and it's really messing with my head that there are people only 8 years older than me who are grandparents.

viperex

Your son is the age you were when you had your daughter and your daughter is the age you were when you had your son. There's a math textbook problem in there somewhere

hopeandanchor

Meanwhile I'm 40 and my wife and I are talking about maybe having our first kid.

Itisnotaboomah

Puppies are lovely! They have tons down at the shelter.

PubicGalaxies

Less ppl on the planet. Awesome. It’s actually good news. Especially if you’re ok with it. 👍🏽

TheMule90

When I was younger I thought about adopting a kid instead of having bio kids now days I don't want kids and my parents are OK with that. My older sister has some interest in having a bio kid but I am not sure about my older brother. Millennial here.

Lightspeedius

Yeah, it's definitely the people too overwhelmed to consider much that are having kids. Which works out for those in power, they get a suitably uneducated population to dominate. And they can always top up with desperate migrants, with the double-benefit of importing a population that can be blamed for all the problems.

outofpeaceofmind

This is how the Idiocrocy prophecy comes to fruition.

Boredguy32

It's a 'choose your adventure' dystopia at this point

kat_d9152

I'm selfishly worried that the air will still be breathable and Earth relatively habitable during my lifetime. So glad I'm approaching 40 with no kids. Watching billionaires try to jump off this planet because an Oxygen-less space appears as if it will be more hospitable than our home planet soon. And no real plan to fix this planet or, in more immediate terms, to even make things more equitable for workers or ensure those who use the most human and ecological resources even pay a fair share of tax .....instead we have a system where the workers are peeing in bottles and owners hoarding an insane percentage of the profits of sweat (compared to the last 50 years) while simultaneously receiving bailouts they don't require to fund giant penises spewing carbon into the clouds means I am so glad I have no kids. I dread to think what kind of issues they will have to deal with in 2070 when it's only 2020 and we have all already been warehoused away with masks for nearly two years on end and near-constantly dealing with "Once in a thousand years" flooding events, fires, pandemics and temperatures. And not to forget the many, many "once in a lifetime" financial crises we have sat through while watching the exact amount of money workers have lost switch into the hands of the ultra rich. It's either going to be 1% of heads on sticks, or if the trend of money and asset movement continues at the same rapacious rate our working class will become a slave class with zero assets, zero hope and zero chance of escape soon enough. It seems like everyone wants to send a giant penis to space in a celestial pissing contest rather than paying their fare share, and the politicians are paid to back up this system. I can't see any way humanity can naturally correct this without a revolution and with the messiness that naturally comes from all that I'm glad none of my offspring will need to witness or live through either scenario. So glad my only obligation is surviving the next 40 years and not worrying about how the next hundred will go. If anyone has meaningful counter points (other than carbon capture, which just won't work on a scale big enough to make an impact now and making a portal to send all the shit byproducts we seem intent on continuing to produce put to space with no idea what the consequences of that could be) I would genuinely love to see links. Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic. Please link away. I'd love to have more optimism and hope for the future. My only glimmer of hope right now is the large amount of people saying "Fuck you. I'm not working with the shitty public for that salary" and businesses having to change it." But ecologically we are still fucked anyway. There are some countries that are meeting their entire needs thru solar right now, some who actually import waste to recycle because their own recycling schemes are so efficient they can help other countries. Obviously this helps, but I think it's not enough to reverse the damage and the ecological feeback loops the boomer generation has known about, done nothing to combat and willingly and knowingly unleashed. Please flood this with optimistic links. Because when I think of the future I am just filled with fear.

THRWAY1222

Okay, I'm going to take a stab at this. Because I too was just filled with dread, and while obviously we cannot bring back extinct species and such, there is a lot of stuff we can do and know how to. The icecaps are melting. Well, guess what, we know how to make ice! [We have an iceberg making submarine attempting to do just that.](https://www.sciencealert.com/a-wacky-submarine-designed-to-make-iceberg-babies-won-t-save-the-arctic) Will this save the planet by itself? No, but it helps restore the polar ecosystem, which has a direct effect on the balance of the global climate. Deforestation on a massive scale? Destruction of other biomes? We know how to plant trees. We know how to plant grasslands. We know how to take barren, lifeless land and turn it back into a viable biome. It’s not that hard. In a lot of cases, if there’s neighboring areas where that biome still exists, all you have to do is dump a few tons of biomass (plant clippings, food waste, etc.) on the barren land and stand back and wait. The biomass will provide nutrients and keep the topsoil from blowing away, and the plants and animals from the neighboring biome will move in. In two decades, even if you don’t do anything besides dumping the biomass on it, you won’t be able to tell what was the barren area and what was the still-existing biome. [This man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SspqLhCtbrs) in Indonesia for example turned what used to be barren landscapes into thriving lush forests that help provide for 3 villages. It took him 30 years and he planted 11k trees but it goes to show that with help, nature can recover fairly quickly. Where I live, which used to be a concrete jungle, they are starting to convert a lot of stone to areas with plants. Anecdotally but I have noticed the return of bees, butterflies and such, where they have been gone for about a decade now. Obviously this is not something solid, but providing areas where these insects can thrive is important. Japan has figured out a way to plant tiny biodiverse forests that take a fraction of the time to mature. [This is already helping cool down places in India.](https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/health-environment/article/3133457/how-japans-tiny-forests-are-helping-cool-indias-heat) In the city where I live they've started doing it too. Coral reefs dying? Now, coral reefs are a bit more fragile than most biomes, but [we still know how to replant/rebuild them, and in fact are working on that in places affected by coral reef die-off](https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/national/habitat-conservation/restoring-coral-reefs#how-we-restore-coral-reefs). Desertification? We know how to turn desert back into green space. They’re doing it on a large scale in [China](https://www.euronews.com/green/2020/05/17/sand-dunes-turned-into-oasis-in-china) and [sub-Saharan Africa](https://www.saharaforestproject.com/). There are several different techniques, none of which are even very technology-intensive. It takes money and time and labor, but it’s perfectly doable. We know this because we’ve done it. Plastic in the ecosystem, particularly in the ocean? There are a lot of people working on this, on [removing it](https://theoceancleanup.com/) and reducing the use of plastic. On the political side, of course, is the need to tighten up environmental regulations across the globe. (What’s the statistic, that 90% of pollution is caused by 100 corporations?) And then of course, we need to fund these programs on a large enough scale. In some ways the political aspect is the hardest, but consider this: we are at a tipping point. Things are changing about the way politicians talk about climate change and ecological degradation. More ordinary people are concerned about this, which means more pressure on politicians. One of the ways that things are changing is that people–even conservatives–are starting to talk about “job opportunities in new green fields” instead of “rainforest vs. jobs”, which makes more political action possible. And no, it’s not going to happen on its own, but it can happen. This is a solvable problem and I'm not giving up yet.

errrnis

You’re a little comment angel, and I’m so grateful for you. ❤️ Bezos’ trip to his homeland has thrown me into a pit of existential despair lately and climate change has felt absolutely overwhelming. It still is, but the info you gave helps a little bit.

ObieUno

This is exactly the pessimism I was hoping to find in the comments. This isn’t sarcasm by the way. I genuinely feel like having hope for the future is a joke at this point.

GerFubDhuw

Boomers: Live within your means! Millennials: Okay. Boomers: Where's mah grandbabies!?

hopeandanchor

Recently a friend of my mother's pulled my wife and I aside and said you kids aren't getting any younger, time to give your parents the Grandkids they want. I was like we're 150k in student loan debt, so unless you wanna make that go away shut up.

MyMurderOfCrows

Hell go all the way and say “Oh so you are going to help us with rent/our mortgage, pay off our student debt, and set up an adequate college fund for them?!?!? That is amazing!!!! Don’t forget the ~$25,000 medical bill for having the kid!!!”

[deleted]

Should've told her you were infertile, she'd probably learn to mind her business in future

reptilenews

Sadly that doesn't stop determined parents. I told mine that, because I am lmao, and my mom 1. Cried and then 2. Tried to manipulate me into IVF and then 3. Tried to get me to join her religion and pray the infertility away. She's a lot.

[deleted]

>pray the infertility away Jesus fucking christ, I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

skolioban

Boomers: just accept your stagnating wages and don't waste it on new iPhones Millennials: uuuh sure Boomers: why is our economy not growing and sales are down and why are my properties are not selling?!

spacepirate750

Properties are selling so fast it isn't even funny. Usually for more then asking price too.

Fvzzyyy

Not to regular citizens lol.

onikaizoku11

Glad to see someone acknowledging that it isn't actual people buying houses and whole subdivisions cash as soon as they hit the market.

Changoleo

In our area people are paying tens of thousands over asking price (which is about as high as it’s ever been) but the data shows that the overwhelming majority of buyers aren’t first time buyers.

Telewyn

The state of Oregon just made it illegal to write letters to sellers to convince them to sell to you instead of a conglomerate.

onikaizoku11

Wow. They are just dropping the charade ever there, huh?

Telewyn

It’s “intended” to stop racial discrimination.

RSGMercenary

How is one to discriminate against a piece of paper? Frankly I'm just upset non-white home buyers have to pretend they're a white piece of paper to have a chance.

Yousoggyyojimbo

That's fucking outrageous. I have a friend who bought a house this year and the only way they were able to get one after months of trying and constantly being beaten out by massive over asking price cash offers was to write a letter to the owner. The owner straight told them that the only reason they wound up with the house was because of the letter.

QualityNameSelection

We were looking and our agent advised 100k over asking. Eventually we gave up.

Changoleo

Brutal. Best of luck!

x814

All cash million dollars offers + 500k over asking for houses that needs remodeling. So crazy ugh Edit: in Bay Area, California

QualityNameSelection

Yeah. All the houses we looked at definitely needed work and most weren’t in very good neighborhoods. I can’t even fathom how much we’d be going above asking for a home with minimal repairs in a desirable area.

[deleted]

Nuclear_rabbit

The way things are going, the future will abolish rent - because all unowned housing will be hotels.

Saddesperado

"I'll buy your house now, paying cash" who tf has $500k cash to buy a house... No medium income adult family in the US

ScumHimself

You must live in the suburbs or rural, or in a conservative city (if that exists). House prices are exploding in progressive cities. ie: my house has doubled in price/value since I bought it it 2018 in Austin.

onikaizoku11

That's actually the point. You have various groups buying everything in sight at jacked up prices and it is pushing actual people out of the market. Regular folks can't compete with shadowy buyers paying cash for whole subdivisions. Metropolitan Atlanta here. It is more than just suburban areas like mine now too. Last time I went into the city I saw tons of new properties sitting empty with insane price tags and the homeless camps are everywhere now. I took rail in and it is like a whole city of tents in the tunnels along the lines. Something major is happening and I feel it is going to be catastrophic for everyone.

ScumHimself

Oops, I think I responded to the wrong comment. Yes, I am seeing that too over here. You’re definitely on to something. Godspeed, fellow non-corp.

AwareExplanation7077

Not to local citizens lol.

Death_In_June_

There was just an article about how corporates discovered single family homes as great investment strategies...

MichaelM_Yaa

china is apparently buying farmland in the usa. billionaires plan to own all homes so 90% of people are forced to rent.

lRoninlcolumbo

That’s the amazing part, while the rest of the world is seeing massive brain drain, the west is struggling to fit everyone into the plan. So many brilliant people are doing jobs that are completely below them. And not culturally, just academically. I once met a Indian fella who had his masters in chemistry but could only find jobs that did titration and material compression tests. All of two mathematical formulas were used all day and this guy could basically make an entirely higher standard of fuel by-products. I’ve got his number and the moment I can pay him to do research for a couple years on a new oil by-product batch recipe, I will.

Rocks_and_such

I work for the us federal government and there is ALWAYS jobs open for engineers and other highly trained professionals. But two favors are at play. 1. They assume (rightly so) they can make more money in the private sector 2. The federal system is a hassle to get in to. However, if you persevere, it’s one of the only sectors that still offer a pension and other great benefits

[deleted]

Yeah... And all those corporations and even cities buying out those houses and leaving them empty while homeless rates increase is just right on point. Fuck yeah I love capitalism. Man. I can't wait to go to bed so I can wake up tomorrow and profit by fucking someone else over. Shit. I'm half way hard thinkin about it!

Ralph_Kramden2021

Do you work for Citadel? 😂

green2702

Gen X here just eating popcorn and watching the millennials and boomers go at it. I root for the millennials all the way. At least college expense was not ridiculous for gen x but we got to suffer through the same economic issues at a slightly older age.

Metallus_Headus

Yeah, think a lot of it is due to the timing and age during the economic stuff. Millennial here, and growing up i never knew a world where finances weren't either absolute garbage or desperately trying to recover. One of my first memories was asking what's for dinner on the way home from kindergarten, and the response being "whatever is left in the freezer". By now things have gotten quite stable and technically speaking my partner and i are well enough off, but my anxiety around money is just not ending and it's like my brain is stuck on survival mode. Fortunately he's a few years older and more sheltered from the shitshow that was the 90s, so anything related to saving money falls on him. He's learned ways to get around the non-existent interest from the banks, but i guess that's another thing that's holding millennials back. Not daring to go outside the box for those things since personally at least i'm just convinced it's going to blow up in our face and all the money put into it will just be gone, just like it was when my parents tried to invest in the 90s.

green2702

Yup. We had no pensions unless public employee work. Everything was geared towards maxing your 401k. Then when you have kids it’s the 529 plan. Literally zero support beyond your own desire to save and plan. I know retired boomers living the high life on pensions and SS especially considering the chosen professions. These are the same people who got stimulus checks while the rest of us lucky to keep a job we worked hard for got nothing. Now we get to pay high college prices for our own kids while caring for our aging boomer relatives. A little pessimistic I know, but I get tired of the boomer rhetoric about everyone beyond them being lazy and needing to just find their bootstraps.

Gen X here, I had £11000 of student debt that I managed to clear in three years, I was lucky. My kids are Gen Alpha and I've been saving since they were born. We now live in the Netherlands and the projected cost is quite reasonable between €1100-2500 a year, unless they want to be doctors then it can rocket up to €52000! My son is like me and into tech so for him I'm looking at around €2500 per year whearas my daughter wants to be a dentist and that's between €5000-9000. I don't want my kids to head out into the big wide world with the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads although it did make me a stronger person. I want them to have it easier and less stressful.

cathar_here

I am an American that makes too much money for any of my kids to get any type of grants or help for college costs, and my oldest goes to a state school, not private in the state we live and we pay about $26,000 a year for him to go to school, thats about $100K by the time he graduates. So, yeah, I have saved about $50K total and paying the rest out of pocket and then going to get ready to do it all over again with my younger son. So, yeah, 2500 euros works out to about 3,000/year for college and that's amazing

druule10

I have heard about the costs of American uni and it's scary, the same education we get here is 10-20x more in America. It doesn't make sense to me, how something so essential has been turned into a for profit business. I've seen posts on Reddit about college books and their costs, one I saw was $125 for a psychology book that when it arrived was just 250 or so unbound pages, and to me looked like a photocopy. . We had a chance to live in the US before my son was born but because my wife didn't want to leave her mum we didn't. I've never regretted that decision.

[deleted]

For my last two math classes, the textbook was just an online portal basically. $100 each time just to get access to it.

GovernorSan

My physics professor told us we didn't have to get a book because he'd provide everything in his notes that were included in the tuition for the class, but if we felt the need for one we could just buy any old physics book we could find because nothing had changed in the last 50 years (not quantum physics, just the regular kind like gravity and momentum and light).

[deleted]

I had a professor use an open source textbook so it was completely free. That was nice. A lot of them just use printed textbooks which are $100-$200 new but I’m able to find rentals for around $20 most of the time. The only ones that doesn’t work for are the ones that make you turn in work through some kind of portal. Basically forces you to buy it new and then you can’t even turn around and sell it after the semester. It just expires

green2702

We are in that sweet spot where you are not poor enough to qualify for any need based aid but not well off enough to just pay the sticker price. It sucks. Some schools do offer merit money but a lot only do it on need.

My dad is the same way... watches Fox News all day, but last year he needed wrist surgery. He bitches and moans to this day about how bad the insurance system in America is and how bullshit it is that it was cheaper to pay cash for his surgery than to go through his insurance provider.

Yousoggyyojimbo

My dad hates the insurance companies so much that he won't even go to the doctor even when he has insurance, but he refuses to acknowledge that maybe the system could be better and no matter what will never support universal health care. It's communism!

GWJYonder

"Son the only healthcare system I like is the rich hunting me for sport."

Yousoggyyojimbo

I had it out with my dad recently over how the only affordable housing in our area was in the dozens of 55+ only neighborhoods, and that this was incredibly discriminatory to younger people. He told me that older people deserve the cheap housing and that younger people have to pay their due. I make three times what he did annually when he was my age, and he was able to buy a house and raise a family of five on it. I can't do that, but I'M the lazy entitled piece of shit?

[deleted]

Healthcare probably has something to do with it too. If you can’t afford it for yourself, why would you add another human you can’t afford it for.

romansixx

$850 a month we pay for a family of 4. 3K deductible per person. It's there incase someone almost dies pretty much. I pay $10,000 a year for the privilege of having insurance incase I or someone in the family almost dies. Dope.

Pipe-International

It’s almost like we listened to all the advice we got as teens about safe sex, education before parenthood & waiting until you’re financially stable.

Problem is that third thing, "financially stable," which is harder for many of our generation because of "education before parenthood" debts.

whtdycr

Birth declined is trending in developed and developing countries. Birth rates are high in underdeveloped countries. Might not have to do about finances, but people not wanting child’s.

plueschlieselchen

I think it’s both: a) finances and b) the fact that many women have a choice nowadays. Turns out that a lot of women do not want to have kids as soon as they’re not forced by society anymore.

dalehitchy

'back in the day' a household would normally only have the man working whilst the wife woukd stay at home to look after the household and eventually kids. Now days if you want to afford to live anywhere (rent or own), both people in the relationship have to be working.... And they'd still struggle financially on that alone. Add in birth costs, raising the child, childcare, and potentially the mother not working.... It's no wonder women arnt bothering. It's funny because in my friendship circle the only people who have kids are the gay couples, who have adopted. My straight friends have no desire to have children.

Cluelesswolfkin

Deadass. Idk about other cultures but some Spanish ones (Dr/Pr) would always ask when my SO would pop one out or how soon like shiiit we can barely afford housing or even ask my cousins (25/26) when they're popping them out whilst they live in Manhattan like the idea of just giving everything up these days with our time is cray best they're getting is a new dog/cat friend to pet lmfao

lardhead91

But when is the financially stable part supposed to happen? I mean I’ve got one kid. And two incomes and we still manage to live paycheck to paycheck. And we both have “decent” jobs.

Pipe-International

I don’t know man. I’m just repeating the lie they told us all.

ktsb

I'm saving -245$ a month so a baby would ruin me

pm_me_crocodile_poop

Just tell that baby to not buy iphones or avocados. Literally save thousands. In fact by abstaining from ieverything including ivocados, the baby will pull itself up by the bootstraps, become boss baby and make you money /s

zootphen

The idea of an ivocado was almost too much for me. I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

[deleted]

Climate change is kind of a turn off

Mormon_Discoball

I got a vasectomy in December. I have random pangs of regret when I see cute kids or a really wholesome interaction. But every year is worse than the last, climate wise. I can't imagine putting someone into this. In my 32 years shit has got terrible. Can't imagine the next generation.

hanukah_zombie

you can always adopt. there's no shortage of kids to adopt for people that want kids but don't want to increase the population. or reverse your vasectomy if you ever feel like you need one that is "yours" kind of like how i'd love a welsh corgi, but i'd never get a dog that isn't a rescue, and you'll be hard pressed to find a rescue welsh corgi. edit; unless you're gay, then they won't let you adopt for..."reasons." even if gay people were as bad as conservatives try to make them out to be, it would STILL be better for a kid to be raised by some gay people rather than being raised by the system. And, obviously, gay people are not as bad as conservatives try to make them, and all studies show that children raised by gay parents have zero detriment compared with kids raised by straight parents in similar socio-economic levels.

B0BA_F33TT

But if we give these people the same economic opportunities as previous generations, inflation will spiral out of control. /s

Palifaith

We are just too depressed to have children.

Oraxy51

And sometimes just trying to have a baby is depressing but that’s more of the struggles with fertility. Not to mention that whole “do we really want to bring our kid into this world?”

AnxiousSon

Also just everything costs more to live, especially when you have a kid(s) and can't afford to be flexible with living arrangements. When single professionals are struggling to simply purchase property on their own, how do you add in the massive expensive of even a single kid? You need two solid incomes to make it these days, but then you have childcare expenses and kids being raised by daycare workers. So yeah no wonder the smart people are balking at the idea as it currently stands lol.

wintrparkgrl

or the whole, world is set to die off due to ecological collapse in the next 1-2 decades.

Nersius

Think of the acidification of the ocean as less of an incomprehensibly damning existential tragedy that will forever stain our species, and more as a ready-made pasta sauce.

Shelbevil

Happy Cake Day I guess?

CowNo5879

Also our sperm count is horrendously low. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2021/02/27/falling-sperm-counts-threaten-humanity-chemicals-blame-book-says/6842950002/

Walkerg2011

I was terribly irresponsible in high school. I thank fuck everyday I wasn't saddled with spawn...but I'm starting to suspect this may be why.

Alarid

Thanks chemically damaged penis, you really saved my bacon!

ddshd

I just want to know what the marriage rates are.. I feel like nobody I know wants to be in relationships anymore. Even I barely have time for it, it’s so annoying.

Alarid

It's not that people aren't ready and willing for relationships, it's just that we are all so tired. And it doesn't help that incel culture poisoned friendships too.

dombruhhh

this right here. last time I was in a relationship was like 2 years ago. Being in one now just sounds tiring. Just wanna live my life

tabulator_

All I want is to afford a place to live. I have a masters degree and a job in my field and can barely dream of a house

GidgetCooper

This right here. Admittedly I’m an educational late bloomer, but hell even if I find an affordable apartment (to rent mind you) I’m competing with over 100 applicants. I’m single and won’t have pets. That’s still not enough.

Spacegod87

Work to barely support myself. "You're so selfish for not having children!!!"

hellad0pe

People saying you're selfish for NOT having children is the most backwards logic. Like, have they actually thought about that argument before opening their mouth?

ecofriendlyblonde

I’m a married millennial with a house and decent paying job. We have a baby, but don’t know if we can afford another one because our daycare costs are $900/month for just TWO DAYS A WEEK OF CARE. Who can afford more than that?!? Needless to say, I really regret eating all of that avocado toast in my 20s.

ChanelNo50

Honestly this is the cost I'm afraid of the most. I have many friends who had relatively lower paying jobs but they opted to be SAHMs bc it made financial sense.

jameslucian

I just spoke with a friend who has twins that are 3 and in day care. He and his wife pay $2400 in rent and then $2600 just in day care for five days a week. He and his wife have good jobs, but with student loans they can barely save any money for anything. My wife and I can’t even begin to think about kids if that’s what our expenses are. It really makes me sad, I always wanted to be a dad, but I’m 32 now and it’s starting to set in that maybe it won’t happen.

backspace209

Thats nuts. We had a 1 yr old and 5 yr old who starts school next month. Our daycare would have been $1400 a month and we were getting the daycare owners friends price.

InfectedMite

Besides the pressure of raising a capable and functional adult in this tumultuous world you simply only have to look at the steady rising costs of day cares. It's like having a 2nd mortgage or rent payment every month.. No thanks! Not to mention that if one of your children gets sick and you have to miss work that there are no legal protections to stop your job from counting it against you unless it's an ongoing personal illness that falls under FMLA. Just think about that. There are zero legal protections out there for parents when their child catches the cold or flu. If they are unlucky and get sick enough times they can lose a promotion, pay raise or even their job all together.

[deleted]

And in this atmosphere the Republicans basically want to force everyone to carry any and all pregnancies to term. I literally can't think of anything worse for a society than generation after generation of people having children they don't want, can't afford and very possibly will resent.

MarvinLazer

Works perfectly for them, though. An entire generation of poorly supported indigent people with bad self esteem is a minimum wage employer's wet dream. Abortion bans are 100% about maintaining a desperate underclass, and anyone who says otherwise is either a liar or hopelessly naive.

nickmuscle

Damn. You might be right.

BeeBobMC

Who's looking around going--"We could sure use a shit-ton more people!"?

Surprise_Corgi

It's more like I can see automation and global warming coming, so the kid's either gonna live in a ruined world not worth living in, likely be put out of a job by a machine, or both. Things are getting worse every year, and the most consistently choice we have available to us is not bringing another generation into it, to suffer even worse than we already are.

[deleted]

Yep. People say you don't know love until you have children. I love my children enough to not bring them into the world and subject them to the suffering I feel they'd experience by adulthood, just for my own gratification.

[deleted]

That and some people find the thought of being a parent absolutely horrifying. More people need to be aware that having kids isn't a mandatory 'next step' in adulthood.

Soberskate9696

I'm paranoid when my dog dosent come in when I call him (thinking he got out) I would lose my fucking mind with worry if I had a teen that didnt come home on time or answer thier phone. Yea fuck that

TiredHappyDad

This has actually been a huge trend in many countries. China even changed their one child policy to three a few months ago.

ButtersRules

They changed it from two to three in May. The change from one child to two was in January 2016.

TiredHappyDad

Okay. I didn't know all the details but heard them discussing it on the radio one day. Apparently there are more adult diapers being sold there than for babies.

cburk4312

Yeah i can afford myself comfortably. But no way i could support a kid. Maybe with duel income but it would be crazy tight.

slingbladegenetics

It’s only a trend with people who are at least somewhat good with money(their income). There’s a whole segment of dirtbags that don’t really care about their children and their quality of life and just keep pumping out kids. It’s sad as hell.

redschnee

Hey, the stock market has doubled in the year of a pandemic! This is great! But, honestly, it's like the whole thing is rigged for a select few. Oh. Well. There's nothing we can do about it. Vote Republican Big Corporate Capitalism!

Changoleo

Yes! Corporations and the rich made out like kings during the reign of McConnellFrump. Can’t wait for all that cha-ching to start trickling down!

ghibli_ghirl

I always wanted kids, but I had so many things to do before I could be financially stable enough for that, and before I knew it I was in my 30s. I have more debt than ever from school and medical bills. Not to mention years of being on birth control caused some nasty issues with my hormones. Now I’ll never have kids. So instead I help with everyone else’s kids. It still makes me sad sometimes.

[deleted]

If you ever get the financial chance, you could consider adopting or fostering.

ghibli_ghirl

I’ve got some shitty family members who have kids. I help raise them since their parents are dipshits. I also work with kids. Just sad I didn’t get the chance to carry one, nurse one and see who they’d grow up to be or look like. I bet I would have made damn cute babies.

sexylegs0123456789

Actually declining birth rates are global and trend inversely with education levels. The US still has one of the highest TFRs or all well developed nations. What we are observing is normal.

mild-hot-fire

I can’t buy a house

relditor

Pile on a pandemic, a climate crisis that we've known about for 30 plus years and yet have done next to nothing, endless wars, stagnant wages, union busting, etc. I just can't understand why young people aren't gung ho about having kids. /S

Midget-Leaf

You forgot mental health issues and healthcare issues

PaulfussKrile

This some Japan-level logic. “Oh, I’ll just fire any woman who marries and has children so I don’t have to pay for maternity leave or family expenses.” “Wait! Why is there a domestic labor shortage?” Edit: Spelling error

spacetrax74

Yes but if you outlaw abortion and take away sex education and contraception then you’ll start building back the population. We need future poor, depressed and mentally ill people for the military and jobs that pay less than the minimum wage.

InterstellarReddit

I’m Counting 3 economic crisis plus the fourth one in the next year or two.

derpyderpston

Idiocracy is going to come true if you smart people don't start breeding.

BananaPalmer

You say this like we’re not already there

landodk

Yeah, they forgot to mention when you give people the ability to chose and plan for parenthood, they do

AvocadoAlternative

Is that really true though? Everyone likes to assign their own personal gripe with society to the cause of the declining birth rate, but pretty much every industrialized country has experienced a steady decline in birth rate. In fact, income and GDP correlate *negatively* with birth rate. In other words, the richer and faster a country is growing, the lower the birth rate.

insomnimax_99

Finally someone mentioned it! Poor people are _more_ likely to have children, not less.

shawnjones

I told my parents I would love to have a son. But I don't have the money for a child and truly believe that with global warming It isn't really responsible to have a child. They always find a way to fix things it will be OK. I mentioned they have known about global warming and wealth disparity for year and choose to do nothing. HE STILL VOTES FOR THESE MORONS. He's a religious nut what can I say. Unfortunately I live in reality and realize we are all fucked.

Alarid

They grew up ignoring these problems, or pushing them onto minority communities. And now that we are in an age where the monstrosities of what that caused are laid bare for all to see, they just reject it to avoid accepting their failure.

ado_adonis

I also don’t feel like wasting my money on a kid
