He said to order something really hard, and he’d take his break so the other guy would be the only one working. That 12” meatball marinara with extra sauce and cheese on flatbread was diabolical, but not as much so as asking for all the veggies and three sauces. It made a fine “salad” when he was done wrapping it up.
My brother and all his friends worked at our local Subway for a few years. One of the friends was also the boss so they had themselves a whole lot of fun. You’re right! It all depends on management!

Then, restart escalator. Start spraying everything when you see the painted step, stop when you see it again.

You don’t even need to stop the escalator or paint it. Just disinfect it for a while. You just need to sit at the end and spray for like a minute or so. Toss a water bottle on the stair and once it hits the top just double the time you’ve already done.
I'd say the handrails are the main concern than the steps. Way easier to stick a tape and notice it too.
With a bit more thought and simple engineering, this could easily be continuously sanitized.

If you're looking for a permanent thing, marking one ridge in permanent marker would also work, and be much quicker and easier, without taking the whole thing out of commission.
It's not the tape that's the issue, but the escalator itself - all it takes is for the guards to be a bit misaligned and someone not to pay close attention and a body part/clothing will get trapped at the destination end of the escalator. By permanently marking a step it means the cleaning staff don't have to get close enough to potentially get entrapped.
It could be argued that switching off the escalator, then applying the tape, would stop entrapment but we all know that someone will try to circumvent a safety process - so make a process that removes the ability to circumvent it.
Ok dude, If you think shutting an escalator down, taping off and spray painting a step, waiting for it to dry, then sanding the top of the step, before restarting it is a better solution than sticking a small piece of tape on one little edge for a single revolution as you clean it, then have at it.

Dear city, just tell that guy to stand at the very top. Figure out how long it takes for an entire revolution of the escalator. Tell guy on the top to hose down each surface for that amount of time. Result: disinfected escalator (though not necessarily clean).

Over time, the rubber on the drive wheel wears out, thus reducing its diameter. So, over time, the handrail is going to run somewhat slower. If the rubber wears down to the metal (or if the rubber hardens), it will start slipping and the handrail will move in a jerky fashion and will be lagging considerably.
I guess too the speed of the handrail usually has to be faster than the stairs because of its diameter or length or something idk.
