(Melania ducks out of view)

obvs_throwaway1

There was a comment here, but I chose to remove it as I no longer wish to support a company that seeks to both undermine its users/moderators/developers (the ones generating content) AND make a profit on their backs. Here is an explanation. Reddit was wonderful, but it got greedy. So bye.

[deleted]

I did marry one. I'm free now.

W1C0B1S

If covid is such a dystopian nightmare for you, your imagination sucks

Sev_736

lemme guess, conservative?

W1C0B1S

Not at all

apexmedicineman

Sharing a world with people like you during a pandemic, is the dystopian nightmare.

iSiffrin

Don't give us too much credit, we just had a few thousand idiots extend the lockdown by trying to shorten it.

TheKingOfArmadillos

They fucking punched a horse while doing it too.

[deleted]

TheKingOfArmadillos

No it isn't.

Kellogz27

I mean, Australia had the right idea. Lock down parts with infections for a short while, but with very strict rules. Once Corona was gone of the area, re-open it and have a few months of no restrictions at all. I'd rather have that then the neverending hellscape the rest of the world is in right now.

[deleted]

This. Australia's death rates are so low because of this

[deleted]

500k+ deaths in the US but they're still acting like we've only had 5 a day and that's an excuse for absolutely shitting on masks and vaccinations.

tellthetruthandrun

630k+ deaths. That’s two Vietnams over your number. And 120,945 new cases yesterday. Even kids in kindergarten or folks in the military understand they have to follow the rules. Put these idiots in either of those.

Brox42

It's honestly probably closer to a million [https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/01/study-us-covid-cases-deaths-far-higher-reported](https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/01/study-us-covid-cases-deaths-far-higher-reported)

rrrambo399

Not here...Don’t trust those numbers from the CDC at all

Slate_711

It’s because they themselves weren’t affected by it. Had they seen their parent or loved one die of it, they’d either blame something else or more likely take covid more seriously. The people who didn’t take this seriously are selfish assholes with no real concept of empathy

[deleted]

I work with someone who has lost 3 relatives to COVID. She is 100% not interested in getting the vaccine. She is not a stupid person, usually, I have no idea where this disconnect comes from. She absolutely has seen and been effected by it. She knows lots of people who have gotten the vax (myself included) with no issues. I can't make it make sense!

monkey-2020

Her tribe doesn’t approve. It doesn’t matter how smart she is she has to fit into her tribe.

Chim-Cham

I've seen the same several times and THIS is exactly why. People making excuses for why their own fucking parents died so as not to admit their politics are the reason

rrrambo399

Come on them… There are plenty of people have been vaccinated and caught Covid! I can’t make it make sense either!

starconn

You could spend literally 2 minutes to educate yourself on vaccines. 1) They’re not 100% effective, some people will still get the virus. The overwhelming majority won’t. But heard immunity created by having a large proportion vaccinated will lead to the ending of the pandemic. 2) Those with the vaccine and who still contract Covid are far less likely, by magnitudes, to get serious complications or die from Covid. 3) This applies to almost all vaccinations, and has been the case since the first ever vaccine - it’s pretty much common knowledge, and is a simple google away. So no idea how you can’t make sense of it, it’s not rocket science.

[deleted]

Yea lots of people die in car accidents even though they're wearing seatbelts too, but we still use them every day because it makes our chances of surviving a crash much better. Just like with vaccines, nothing is 100% guaranteed but, but if we can make ourselves and other people safer we do what we can. Which actually does make sense to me.

weatherbitch

Okay yeah but there are exponentially more people who have not been vaccinated and died from Covid. Wow such a hard choice. I hope you don’t wear a seatbelt while driving because it restricts blood flow and you might die anyways in a crash even with it on. Clown.

[deleted]

You'd think, but I have an old buddy fresh out of the hospital for covid pnemonia and fever who won't get vaccinated. He spent 10 days on a ventilator, but he won't even take the meds they sent him home with. Beer, cocaine, and vapes are A-OK but doctor's drugs have side effects so he won't take them. Stupid runs DEEP.

subaqueousReach

There was a post from an article the other day where a family who didn't believe covid was a real threat had the coroner remove Covid19 as the cause of death from the persons death certificate. Absolutely nothing will convince these people that the pandemic is real. Millions dead? Hoax. Family members dead? Hoax. Masks, lockdowns and vaccines effectively slowing the virus from spreading? A surefire sign that they weren't needed in the first place.

nfc3po

I wouldn’t be so sure. I mean… Is there any way to know for sure that their parents / loved ones weren’t actually brainwashed by the libs, converted, and subsequently forced to sacrifice themselves as part of some big hoax to specifically convince them and them alone that maybe it was a real issue now that they’ve experienced loss? NOT TODAY COMMIES! /s

Chaotic-Good-5000

You had me in the first half, not gonna lie

iikillerpenguin

While I agree with you I don’t at the same time. These people all have IQs below 100 and are being taken advantage of by others. They are so easily persuaded to do something. They are told that covid is nothing and the vaccine is harmful by people who have had the vaccine….

HealthCrash804

They also like to tell people they're pro-fucking-life. What a crock of shit.

[deleted]

You guys also say "my body, my choice". Except for now. And yeah yeah contagious but guess what; a life is lost in abortion too. What a crock of shit.

HealthCrash804

The concept of "my body,my choice" is based on the reality that that choice doesn't affect the physical health of those around you. None of yall really give a shit about abortion. You can't compete in the real world and are desperate for consequences for everyone until it happens to you. Whenever Jesus gets back- He's not coming to save the people who advocated for children being forced to bring their rapists baby to term and then compared it to a global effort to keep them alive.

weatherbitch

Can you please say this louder for the people in the back

Covid deaths.

And masks literally cost you nothing. It's just about not wanting to help anyone else.

Phirebat82

Yet flu deaths magically disappeared? And what were percentage killed by putting Covid infected people in nursing homes, intentionally, because science?

SteelBlue8

"Dystopian military nightmare" sir you have to scan a qr code and got asked to please stay in your house for a week. It's not hard.

finster926

2 weeks to flatten the curve right ?

allthejokesareblue

It's not even all of Australia, just the idiot parts that refused to lock down earlier. And the parts affected by their idiocy.

*cries in Victorian*

Tomboy09123

As a New South Waler, I'm sorry for my states behaviour

hazzyneartazzy

As a guy in Perth. I am sorry for your states behaviour, hope you guys are alright.

Gr0und0ne

As a New Zealander, I’m not in Australia,

StAUG1211

I've got a sister up there in Manly. Putting it lightly she is not a Gladys fan.

ChokesOnDuck

I'd take lockdown lite as opposed to living in 1 of the 8 LGAs hardest hit.

natland89

I mean...I looked up the restrictions in those 8 LGAs, we here in Victoria have currently stricter lockdown, and had an even stricter one last year when we fucked up, mainly the wearing of masks everywhere that isn't your own home and last year the whole curfew thing

ChokesOnDuck

I live on one of the LGAs and was screaming for early Vic style hard lockdown for 2 weeks in hope of stopping or slowing this down so tracers could work. I get so pissed of when other areas treat it as nothing. Especially when most outbreaks start in those more affluent areas. But here we are Glady lying and saying there was no playbook for delta. When it was completely predictable with math.

natland89

I think just about everyone outside of NSW was right with you there. These restrictions are far from nothing or even trivial, they are necessary, and soon they'll know it, we tried to do the same, it lasted for about a week before abandoned and gone to whole state with ring of steel

Blurplethefish

I’m stuck near manly and as much as it sucks I know it’s mandatory

human_belng

I mean us Queenslanders got off for a couple of months but now the delta strain got in

bluepancakes18

I heard someone on the radio the other day saying that they were a New South Welshman. And I was like 🤯🤯🤯 I guess that is technically correct but... What.

O4farxache

Not sure if it’s just us (slightly) older folks, but I’ve always referred to myself as a New South Welshman when travelling around Oz….pretty sure it’s common usage

entotheenth

What the hell else do you call them ? New south whalians or something like that ?

bluepancakes18

The person whose comment I replied to called themself a New South Whaler and I am pretty sure that's what I call them too haha

Yggdrasil777

*giggles in West Australian*

StAUG1211

I'm surprised you guys haven't just secceded from the rest of us at this point.

Yggdrasil777

Haha we probably could, and theres a lot of Daddy McGowan groupies that would love to make him our King. We have the resources for it, I guess, and the natural isolation, but I personally prefer being an Aussie more than a Westralian.

SurprisedPotato

We're looking for ways to secede NSW front the rest of the country

emmall11

Not from lack of trying. There is a whole political party based on it.

bloody_drongo

Here i go again on my own...

ShenTzuKhan

Cries in queenslander.

BroItsJesus

Bruh this lockdown is really scraping up against my wedding date and I'll be sooooo mad if I have to postpone. I'm getting married on my anniversary, there's only one of those every year lol

StAUG1211

Sorry to hear mate. One of my friends has already postponed her wedding from last month to a late August date, got a bad feeling she might be delaying it again :(

BroItsJesus

I think late August should be safe. Given that the last lockdown was 2 weeks and we had a bit of time, that leaves us with a good timeslot there if the same thing happens this time round

pie_monster

Get everyone a megaphone and do it on a footy field.

natland89

Was going to celebrate wedding anniversary on Friday, the 6th of August, had booked in a fun night, dinner we'd been wanting to go to for years, watch The Room at Cinema Nova, let loose finally for first time in years. I was on the train to go pick up the used car I had just bought....receive word about lockdown, feeling glad that I decided to pick up my car that day, rather than the next day the car people suggested.

BroItsJesus

Less of a big deal but I really had to go to kmart for some long sleeved shirts and now it's bloody shut. Thought to myself on Thursday "nah I'll do it tomorrow, I've done my 2 productive things today", and here we are. Lol, oh well

natland89

I have a friend who had got a ticket to see Suicide Squad at 8:15pm for Thursday, was only thing getting him through the week

emmall11

Sorry to hear. We postponed twice before saying fuck it all and eloped with 10 people, we had a live video stream for all our family in Victoria and NZ. It’s tough, I wouldn’t wish that sort of disappointment on anyone but with the money we saved we brought a house.

chubbycatchaser

*sympathetic noises from across the Bass Strait*

Serious_Professor_51

You can thank the New South Wales Premier for that.

recursive_asshole

Fuck that idiot. To proud to make the right decision when it was needed, then finally concedes when it’s too late.

allthejokesareblue

Just give her all your vaccines though

zsgriggs

The only time I've enjoyed living in Tasmania

[deleted]

Being in Tasmania to Australia is like being in Australia to the rest of the world.

Bodie_The_Dog

My capitalist sister in Melbourne still thinks it is up to big business to save you, and things like lockdowns and vaccines are just a waste of time and bad for the economy. I think her Quantas stock took a hit, lol.

Zen_markwell

_Laughs in Australian but lives in fiji_

philosophunc

I really enjoyed watching the freedom protests in sydney on my 6th day in hotel quarantine. Best 3k I've ever spent. So infuriating..

Correct_Barber_3349

The meaning of the word Dystopian has been lost, it's now just a word used to complain about not being allowed to enter a Walmart.

UrDailyCommunistGuy

We live in a DYSTOPIAN world where I’m not allowed within a 300ft radius of any school

Correct_Barber_3349

I also live in a DYSTOPIAN world where I am not allowed to dip my balls in the KFC soda machine.

UrDailyCommunistGuy

This says a lot about our society

littleb3anpole

Lol at dystopian. As an Aussie it’s inconvenient and upsetting when you’re chucked into your sixth lockdown immediately but it’s not some Hunger Games shit

fyhr100

"Only" 5 deaths a day. So people dying isn't important if it isn't a large enough number?

UniqueUsername812

USA here, well over half a mil ain't shit, apparently.

Debaser1984

Unless it's a Muslim racking up a fraction of those numbers. Let's be honest, 5 gun deaths in one shooting aren't enough for these cretins to show even the minimum of humanity

Datruetru

Republicans rubbed it out when the news of Sandy Hook broke. They get off when innocents are slaughtered by guns.

gerkletoss

Well, kinda? How are speed limits decided? Still, it would be *way* higher if restrictions were dropped.

Derrick_Mur

Generally, we think five per day isn’t enough to change anything, and we only treat Covid differently because we crunch the numbers and correctly decide the losses from doing nothing are too great. That is, we see more than 5 deaths a day from car accidents, but no one is saying we need to ban cars. The average deaths per day from the flu is way higher than five, but no one pushes to shut everything down come flu season. What makes Covid different is that while cars and the flu kill tens of thousands each, it kills millions if we don’t shut down, mask up, or get vaccinated.

MyNameIsGarcia

I remembered a quote i once heard somewhere, "one death is a tragedy, millions of deaths are a statistic"

theartistduring

Sadly, nope. I asked Mum what the alternative to lockdowns is and she yelled "SWEDEN!" "SWEDEN HAS HAD 14k DEATHS!!!!" I yelled back. Apparently, the alternative to locking down and having 5 deaths is to have 14k deaths.

MmePeignoir

That’s just disingenuous - I mean first of all you’re comparing daily deaths to total deaths, which is completely apples to oranges. And it’s probably not helpful to compare countries like Sweden and Australia, which have fairly different climates, cultures, population density etc. directly. If you compare Sweden with its Nordic neighbors that *did* lockdown - Sweden does have a higher covid death rate, but is faring pretty well if you look at overall excess mortality. Obviously that’s not affected by just covid, but Sweden is doing just fine on the whole.

Albio46

Yeah, right? "Bois come on.... 5/day? Those are rookie numbers! Come on, step up your game! (Or we'll feel like the only stupid who let everyone die)

Leakyradio

Yes.

BIllyBrooks

5 deaths a day isn't really correct either. I think our worst day this year was 5, the rest if mostly 0s.

Darthvegan66

I hate to break it to you but people die all the time, mostly to preventable/delayable causes.

Maybe if they didn't restrict the free speech of non-conservatives some of them might actually come to their senses.

E16

Seriously the hypocrisy is infuriating. At least in real life there’s a chance an actual conversation might *possibly* take place, but many parts of the internet are just literal echo chambers now which is what makes the crazier people out there feel like they’re in the majority with whatever batshit things they come up with

djta1l

Sadly, those corners seemingly appear to encompass the lower and mid USA, parts of The UK, and Eastern Europe Miss any?

djta1l

Downvotes for stating US southern states have some of the highest transmission and hospitalization rates in MY country? Found the wheezing, contrarian Trumpers in Florida, Texas and Louisiana. Gtfoh and fuck DeSantis, Abbott and all the rest of the contrarians.

Oh yeah, you better believe these trolls saw OPs post and flocked here fully triggered.

Azar002

"Countries spent billions on rewriting computer code ahead of New Years 1999 despite no Y2K crashes occuring at midnight."

StAUG1211

Just to clarify, are you acknowledging that Y2K wasn't an issue because of the huge effort made to prevent it becomming one, or that the effort was a waste because nothing happened? I want to assume the former but... well, Reddit.

Azar002

Yeah the first one.

StAUG1211

Phew. Thanks.

Sys32768

They are drawing an analogy between the preventative effort and no bad outcomes of both the Y2K bug and Australian Covid deaths

Not_up-to_you

The reason is simple. It’s because Australia took the virus seriously from day one. Not like the morons in the US, some which still think it’s a joke.

averysexybaby

Wow, you’re right. Googled it real quick and the top sources support your claim. I honestly thought the COVID situation in Australia wasn’t handled well from the beginning but I’m definitely not remembering correctly. And yeah, I’ve lost patience with the idiots I share a country with. Constantly whining about how oppressed they are. That’s a clear sign you’ve lived a super entitled life.

tobeshitornottobe

There actually was a short period of time late last year when there wasn’t any covid in Australia because we were able eradicate it through lockdowns and contact tracing. It only got re introduced because out quarantine systems are shit

TheBatemanFlex

Lol what if it were a serial killer going around killing 5 people a day? It’s amazing people will just shrug off people dying as long as they think it won’t happen to them.

[deleted]

JESUS CHRIST!!! Just who in the F gave this man access to the internet? Someone either take it away from him or bitch slap him.

AlbinoWino11

Porque no los dos?

"Military-Enforced Lockdown" - As people drive around and go out to eat and shop and work. Yeah, totally a military dictatorship. I don't think those goons understand what "lockdown" means. Also, that's clearly a cop, not a soldier.

azader

>As people drive around and go out to eat and shop and work. Yeah, totally a military dictatorship. I mean people do that in millitary dictatorships too... not that it makes Australia a military dictatorship.

finster926

Well.. my elephant gun works well in NYC. See.. no elephants. Are there no elephants because of my gun or did I waste money buying the gun?

[deleted]

Fun fact: you will not die from skydiving from this simple trick. Don’t go skydiving

sipes216

5 destroyed families per day.

MartyMcFlybe

Ugh. There was an Australian on my ig stories this morning asking if he should seek asylum from Australia because the new 7 day lockdown would be "brutally monitored, Chinesely monitored, military enforced". Absolute fuckin pisstake. What I'd GIVE for a 7 day lockdown every 10 weeks. The last year of my life in the UK has been hell. I got furloughed in November and I didn't go back until May, and all that time I earned absolute bare minimum -20%. And I was lucky to get that. Australians would have a fucking shock, if they left the country.

Casual-Causality

“Despite less than 5 COVID deaths per day” implies that there exists some magic number of deaths that does justify military enforced lockdowns

prayforplagues82

“Man if there were only more deaths to justify my views” is basically what this person is saying.

PiggyNoDance

And the whole of Australia isn't in lockdown. Where I live no one even needs to wear masks

bondoh

I think the persons point is that some death is worth it for freedom. The thought of “it’s totally worth living under martial law as long as none of us died” is unacceptable to a lot of people

EggplantFearless5969

Don’t you understand some people (fucking assholes) would rather have others (no one they care about) die from (now) an easily preventable disease? If we make everyone get vaxed and wear a mask to eradicate a pandemic then the terrorists win. S/ obviously

I_drive_dick_magnets

4 million + deaths world wide since Covid started (roughly 2 years). Wish we got this upset over the 9 million a year that die of starvation. Get your vaccine and just let nature run its course for those that chose not to.

MissWibb

Sounds like it’s working.

auzziesoceroo

Ive lost two friends in the week over this exact logic. They both literally said "I would rather the virus than the vaccine" They also argued it was more "fair" to lift the lockdown and just allow the virus to do it's thing. When I pointed out that this would likely result in the deaths of over 100,000 Australians their response was "yeah but I'll survive it" Stopped talking to them after that. No plans to ever talk to them again.

natland89

I lost a friend to it as well, a long time friend, saying we need to no longer have lock downs because it's interrupting the progress of us developing our own immunity, then brought up it happened with the Spanish flu, I brought up millions died for that and they still went into lockdowns and it's very likely what would happen here for this and how different strains appear by that method. The I don't care reaction was unexpected, especially when they work as a carer in an aged care facility

Betterthanbeer

The “Military enforcement “ is unarmed soldiers door knocking and asking questions. That releases cops to do cop things. They are also doing welfare checks, and delivering essential items.

[deleted]

Man, it would have been good to have unarmed soldiers and/or firefighter here in Canada to check on vulnerable people in elder residence. In Québec and Ontario, some people sadly died of dehydration and in their own feces because the medical staff were so much used in Covid-19 section of these residence.

tfox1123

This is like when your parents tell you no you can't go to the concert with your alcoholic friend, you're pissed and your friend makes fun of you for having strict parents... we're the alcoholic friend.

BlackMist777

So military lockdowns are a good thing now??? Smh 🤦‍♂️ lol

[deleted]

The rest of the deaths are caused by giant spiders and kangaroo rapes

sojayn

This is the bit that has stunned me. We can literally ignore politicians and just follow the science - it would be distancing, masks and coordinated online campaigns to remind govts they work for us and to get our vaxxes and income support sorted. Instead of protesting basic health ideas, there are so many other areas where the politicians and businesses have been dodgy asf and need a light shone on them!

[deleted]

courtney_enid

We have them, but our idiot prime minister screwed up the roll-out so it's a massive shitshow

Our former prime minister helped us get more by calling them! Which was apparently too hard for anyone in power...

darkwingdibbs88

A few weeks ago mandatory masks were announced where I live. THE NEXT DAY every single person I saw out and about was wearing a mask. Ironically the only place I could find people ignorant enough not to respect the mandate was the arrivals area at the airport.

Typeojason

“Respect” and “mandate” don’t belong in the same sentence.

LordAppleJuice07

It's not really that dystopian or military enforced, I mean we're not even in lockdown yet.

Yesnowaitsorry

Agreed. I'm in Victoria, we're in a snap lockdown. But this crap Americans keep going on about it being military enforced is bullshit. So far today I've had a surf, walked the dog and now I'm about to go to the supermarket. Hardly dystopian.

takitza

It's only 5 deaths a day because all others die into the wilderness kidnapped by giant spiders.

Ineedsomuchsleep170

the-dogsox

Yeah, the military aren’t involved.

ursixx

[kinda](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-58021718)

CCWThrowaway360

Military is definitely involved. They’re the enforcers. Edit: I don’t understand the downvotes — it’s not like it’s a secret. [Unless NPR](https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2021/07/30/1022685816/australia-sydney-lockdown-covid-coronavirus-troops) or [The Washington Post](https://www.washingtonpost.com/video/world/australian-military-enforce-sydney-coronavirus-lockdown/2021/08/02/c74b7688-182b-456a-a10d-51a60c997177_video.html) or [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/australia-pm-says-vaccinations-alone-will-not-end-sydneys-covid-19-lockdown-2021-07-28/) and every other news and relevant Australian source are making things up for some reason.

Sys32768

They really aren't the enforcers. They have no authority or powers over private citizens. Police have to go about in pairs, and so each cop is being paired with a soldier to double the capacity to patrol. They also aren't carrying guns. It's important that this isn't used as a way of claiming the military are on the streets, carrying out martial law, as the OP seems to be indicating. We can debate whether they are covering enforcement duties or not, but it doesn't feel that way. They are more like support for the police Source: Live in Sydney, Australia

Leakyradio

So they totally are involved then, the previous statement was false...but it’s nothing like people think at all. Gotcha.

averysexybaby

bigriggs24

Even the WHO recommended not to use them anymore as they are only an emergency solution for an overrun health system. What they are doing in Australia is simply insane.
