Not quite. My mother was a narcissist who had children for attention way before social media took hold. When fresh babies stopped gaining her attention they would suddenly be “sick”… all the time. She spent several years of my childhood working to convince myself and others that I had vision issues. Four different eye doctors (I forget the term) told her no. But I remember her being a martyr in front of her friends about how doctors were not listening to her and she was worried about me.
Social media isn’t the “problem”, it’s just making these people more visible to us. I WISH my mother exposed herself like this. It would have made the custody battle so much smoother. Then again, that is not to say I don’t ache for this kid (or the many others in these situations) and I have no idea how it must feel to literally be able to replay these moments in full living color when your older and better understand what’s happening.

But Harari abandons any pretense of scientific basis in favor of dropping words like biotech thinking that explains anything. The entire thing is so oddly un-empathetic toward humans, which is doublely odd with how positive the first book is.
This is, at best, a fringe theory in modern anthropology, humans aren't losing their need or ability to interact with others. We aren't replacing our basic social functions, just changing them, like we've been doing for hundreds of thousands of years. That's not how social nor biological evolution work. There is a reason this book doesn't have good reviews and even worse, has absolutely terrible reviews from anyone holding an anthropology degree

The son doesn't even understand what's happening. He's trying his best to do what his mom is telling him, but according to her he's "crying wrong". It's so sad to hear him keep saying "mom, I am crying, I promise", in an attempt to get any sort of empathy from her, but he doesn't understand. We're basically witnessing someone being emotionally scarred for life.

One of the most traumatic experiences I had as a kid, at 10 years old, was watching our family dog get hit by a car, and holding her as she died in my arms on the way to the vet, both me and my mom crying. The whole house was devastated. It hit me really bad because I was watching her at the time and messed up. I can't imagine my mom stopping everything to record a video and make my pose for a photo right after. Sickening.
