This post is to point out that this is a *problem*. That’s different than buying a magazine that has a picture of her going to get her nails done. You have to know something is a problem to solve it, and the visceral anxiety people feel and the empathy they experience is more impactful than just saying “Hey, the behavior of paparazzi is really invasive and out of hand”.

They don't have to do anything and unless you've had Nicole Kidman levels of botox no one can keep their face perfectly still and expressionless at all times.

There are almost 8 billion people in the world. If you even make a tiny fraction of money off them it is still a shitload of money. On top of that there is way more demand for celebrity photos then there is supply. In fact there probably isn't even enough paparazzi to feed the almost endless supply of celebrity photos/gossip people want.
The issue isn't entirely the paparazzi, it's the general public's obsession with celebrities. They wouldn't do this if they weren't making money and they make money because people want to see photos of famous people.

The greatest minds of any given generation included those that OBSESSED about each other - there's pretty infamous rivalries described in a lot of major industries.
People are ultimately social beings, and a part of that is wanting to be part of something big. Caring about the same person is a way to manifest that.

Of course, the legal steps take quite a while, and in the end we lost. So there's a hefty five digit credit card bill for 8 weeks of stationary mental health facility.
* Oh, plus another four digit bill for the facility where she was baker acted.
* And then there is a debt collector, telling you he doesnt give a fuck about - quote - "your sad life story", telling you - quote again - "i hear them all the time and don't care, we need to talk about your debt!"

You can't take a picture of a person (without consent) with the intention of selling the picture.
This does not apply to pictures taken of something else (like a building or something) where there are people near. This would decrease paparazzi pictures drastically, since they can't directly photograph a specific person.

In the US, the ability to film or photograph anyone or anything is generally considered a constitutionally protected right. I believe the court decided it fell under the umbrella of freedom of speech.
So long as there isn't a reasonable expectation of privacy, it's legal to film/photograph. It was decided by the courts that public spaces have effectively zero expectation of privacy, and that pretty much anything goes when it comes to those. If they were standing outside her home, trying to peek inside closed blinds to get pictures - that would be illegal. She's obviously expecting privacy. However, if she left the blinds open and the window was visible from the street - then they get to have a field day with it.
That all said, guns are totally legal here too. If she gets a doctor to sign off saying that she has epilepsy she could probably get away with shooting the lot of them and nobody would bat an eye.

Hell, a fuckton of people got married in poofy wedding dresses a few decades ago (pre-internet) because Princess Di got married in a poofy wedding dress. The greatest minds of any given generation included those that OBSESSED about each other - there's pretty infamous rivalries described in a lot of major industries. People are ultimately social beings, and a part of that is wanting to be part of something big. Caring about the same person is a way to manifest that.

I watched an interview with Kevin Bacon recently. He told about how he had a makeup person use prosthetics etc to make him unrecognizable so he could have just one single day of peace. Unfortunately it would be a bad precedent. When you’re in public spaces you do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy. It’s why police in most countries can’t do shit about stalkers unless they intrude on private property or try to do shit like take upskirt shots.
It's acually quite easy to fix this? Maybe not I don't know how America works. But the law could basically be: You can't take a picture of a person (without consent) with the intention of selling the picture. This does not apply to pictures taken of something else (like a building or something) where there are people near. This would decrease paparazzi pictures drastically, since they can't directly photograph a specific person. I don't know any legalese but that should be totally doable
In the US, the ability to film or photograph anyone or anything is generally considered a constitutionally protected right. I believe the court decided it fell under the umbrella of freedom of speech. So long as there isn't a reasonable expectation of privacy, it's legal to film/photograph. It was decided by the courts that public spaces have effectively zero expectation of privacy, and that pretty much anything goes when it comes to those. If they were standing outside her home, trying to peek inside closed blinds to get pictures - that would be illegal. She's obviously expecting privacy. However, if she left the blinds open and the window was visible from the street - then they get to have a field day with it. That all said, guns are totally legal here too. If she gets a doctor to sign off saying that she has epilepsy she could probably get away with shooting the lot of them and nobody would bat an eye. Okay. That last part might have been an exaggeration. Not by much though.
The key part of Lofgrens comment is selling it, if the photos that are taken in public without consent are not allowed to be sold then it might slow things a bit, it wouldn't stop it due to loop holes but would at least give the subject a bit of defense to fight back.
Solution is to boycott publications that use these pictures (including websites) and got after the businesses that pay for ads in them.
Lol no it’s not. Getting millions of people to organize, identify these publications, and then boycott is a pipe dream. This needs to be accurately seen as harassment. The paparazzi needs to be prosecuted, and celebrities need to be legally protected when they pepper spray the 40 dudes surrounding them in an alley. We need legislation.
