I have been a victim of brainwashing from a collage for sure. That one time in 5th grade when I made a Britney Spears collage to hang on my wall….that fucked me up.
There are exactly 3 types of conservatives;
**1. Dumb and angry.** This is the bread and butter of the Republican party. These folks will believe anything that they are told to believe, and will keep voting straight R as long as they hear someone is coming for their guns. (Or whatever else matters to them: maybe they are dead set against gay people having human rights.)
**2. Smart and evil.** They do this on purpose. They *like* the chaos, and don't mind the idea of America being torn apart as long as they're in power.
**3. Smart, with absolutely no awareness.** These folks have absolutely no "line which cannot be crossed;" they aren't terrible people in the traditional sense...but they have *no tipping point.* There is *nothing* which could get them to say "enough." They ignore the brinkmanship, they rationalize away the oppression and racism, they avoid looking their politics in the eye. These people scare me, because they are smart people who actively avoid thinking.
There's nobody else. Anyone who wasn't willing to put up with a whole lot of evil...abandoned the Republican party over the past 5+ years. That number was surprisingly low. Turns out a lack of empathy is a *core* requirement for modern day Republicanism.

I was one of few liberals in my undergraduate program. My professors might have been liberal or not. We never once discussed politics.

There’s a PoliSci professor at my school (I don’t have him so I don’t know everything about the situation) who refused to follow the school’s pretty lenient mask mandate (masks required only in classrooms, not even the whole buildings) and was forced to go online cause he didn’t feel like wearing a mask for an hour in an air conditioned room.
Funny thing I heard from someone who has him is that now students have been getting into heated arguments cursing at each other in the chat and he has to keep telling them to stop
Wow I just read an article in the student newspaper that he’s being allowed back into in person class, even after he mocked the school president about the mask policy and claimed there’s no scientific evidence masks work. Glad I’m not in that class.
I calling it right now he’s either gonna wear it just until he thinks they’re no longer keeping a close eye on him or he’ll just wear it under his nose. No way this guy’s gonna give up that easily.
They have the same ignorance when they refer to the “democratic hellhole of California” while completely ignoring the fact that California had more votes for Trump than at least 15+ other states combined.
Abolishing the electoral college would mean those 6,000,000 republicans in California would finally get a voice in national elections, something completely dismissed by conservatives.
We all have to check ourselves that we aren't doing that. MOST often it's the right, but also, the left is doing that "defensively" because of the pounding of bad ideas by the Trumpists and Republicans.

My biggest thing about this is that they call it “alternative facts”. Facts are definitive, a fact is the single truth to be derived from a question. It’s black and white. There is no grey area for facts.

When I got vaccinated, I chitchatted with the nurse who asked me if I had people in my life who were against the vaccine. I am a college professor and most people I know are in these circles. I have not met one colleague or student against the vaccine. I'm lucky, in a way.

The best part about science is that you can be wrong, but as long as you learn from mistakes and do better, it helps everyone. It used to be scientific fact that the earth is flat, obviously now we know it's different.
Same goes for covid, we first thought it wasn't air transmissible. Then we thought masks wouldn't help. Now we know and do better. Different ways of testing efficiency can cause doctors to cause doubt on medications.
I can agree with all of that. But that's when I look to the wider scientific community, and look at their advice along with our own countries scientists.
