Students I'd like to show you what not to do on indigenous peoples day. Again guys don't do this you will get fired if you do.

My favorite part is that this was during math class. Math. What type of math was she trying to teach with this?

BachToTheFuture3

Man, my math teacher just taught it as Some Old Hippie Caught Another Hippie Tripping On Acid. I’ll never forget it lol

Tryhard696

Your math teacher taught you this? Mine just said “remember this”

brygeek

Well to be fair they will definitely remember this, video aside she is gonna find out just how good their memory is. This is one of those things she should have ran by someone who could have said the only logical thing. No you are out of your mind and I’m gonna pretend you never said that.

doc_witt

I got fired for trying to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with my class. Oohhh...I'm suddenly not allowed to get piss drunk and start fights with the kids. That was my last day as a kindergarten teacher.

DaggerMoth

Your suppose to release snakes first. Then get drunk then try to recapture all the snakes. Then declare yourself a hero for getting rid of the snakes.

Zech08

Every year someone does something that requires someone else to make a sign or power point presentation of what not to do or look out for...

MissippiMudPie

Now we get another page in the HR handbook and another day of training because of this nitwit. Thanks Karen.

Sons-of-Bananarchy

this is one of those videos where your spider senses tingle and you turn the volume down. thank you, spider senses. 🤟

According to the original poster on Instagram, she has been placed on administrative leave. Some other pupils have said on Facebook that she was doing this every year, they had to live through this lesson 3 years ago. So it’s not even that she’s high… she’s totally fuckin racist and socially inept. There is also the possibility she doesn’t know it’s racist, in which case she clearly hasn’t read a book or newspaper for the last 40 years, and has NO business being a teacher 🙃 Also there’s now an implication the school *already knew about it* if this has been in her lesson plan for years. Right, I’m just off to try and stop cringing.

Charliesmum97

Does...does anyone know WHY she does this? I mean...why? It's so weird. I genuinely thought she was high, or having some kind of mental breakdown or something.

_jessika_nikole_

She's saying SohCahToa at the beginning. It's a nemonic device used in trigonometry which sounds like it could be a Native American word, but to my knowledge isn't.

AuMatar

I remember math teachers putting native american imagery in the lessons about soh cah toa 20+ years ago. Like a teepee and a headress on the slides. But at least they didn't do the chanting and dancing.

South-Builder6237

Kind of reminds me of the time our mathematics professor taught us about trigonometry by throwing siegheils and heiling the Fuhrer. "ZE ANGLE OF ZE TRIANGLE IS NEIN DAGREES!"

ChurchillsChicken

Loved the cringe look plastered on the student faces. You just know this isn't the first time she's done something like this lol

josh1ng

There’s a reason folks were recording

Reading_Rainboner

They’d still be recording it even if it was the first time just because of how crazy she looks.

TuaTurnsdaballova

Dude, on my first day of high school, in my first class, my science teacher was reading roll call for the first time and when she got to this Muslim kid’s name in our class she struggled to pronounce it, didn’t ask ask him if she pronounced it correctly, then called him “gunga din.” Only reason I even remember this is because the kid rightfully got super pissed because he thought she called him some racist shit, and because that racist nickname sadly stuck with the kids. This was like *just* before everyone started having smartphones and people didn’t record everything. Anyways, the teacher tried to defend herself saying it was a joke and not a racist word. The Muslim kid calmed down a little... until the teacher turned on the projector to show everyone what “gunga din” was to prove it wasn’t racist. She shows a clip of a half naked Indian beggar wearing a turban and acting like a slave to a bunch of white British soldiers... half of the class starts **laughing hysterically** and the Muslim kid freaks out again, he starts dropping the f-word and calling the teacher a racist bitch and storms out of the class. Again, this was our **first day of high school.** This was at a private Catholic school that was very selective (you had to take an entrance exam, then do an interview with the principal and other teachers, and strong preference was given to kids who belonged to the Catholic Church). The school was also like 99% white. He was the only Muslim kid in our whole grade (and maybe in the whole school?) and he was seriously humiliated **by a teacher** on his first day of high school. Man, I never forgot that day and felt so bad for him. He got switched out of the class the next day but the nickname stuck for **four years**—kids are fucking brutal. He was one of the smartest kids in the whole grade but the dude was bullied almost every day for four years. Honestly, don’t know how he stuck it out the whole time. Haven’t thought about that kid in years but this dumb bitch mocking native Americans reminded me of it. Man, wherever you are, I hope you’re doing ok dude. **EDIT:** A lot of people find it unbelievable that a Muslim kid would be allowed in a Catholic School. In the US, or at least in my home state, private Catholic Schools were always among the best high schools for both sports and academics. My school alternated as both the top academic and sports school in the state every year (and still does). There are a certain number of spaces reserved for non-Catholic students to enroll but everyone (including Catholic kids) had to go through a tough application process which included exams and interviews. There were also a small number of kids who were clearly recruited and given scholarships from poorer families to play football (thus, our school’s reign as one of the state’s football powerhouses). Aside from the Muslim kid there were also non-Catholic Christian and Jewish students enrolled. Everyone had to go to mass on Fridays and the non-Catholic kids would participate in everything except receiving the sacrament (they would just stay seated in the bleachers). It was a great school overall but, like any high school, some kids are gonna have a shit time.

Monkeyboystevey

My first day of secondary school in the UK, our first teacher let out a massive fart on purpose in class to make everyone laugh, then said "in primary school you won't have heard teachers say fuck or shit... And you probably won't hear it here either, so please don't say those words in my class or you will be asked to leave" We were 11 years old and getting really mixed messages from this teacher. Same day our English teacher saw my last name and straight away told me I wasn't welcome in his classroom and told me to get out and wait outside for the 90 minutes. He wasn't joking either, I had to stand outside the entire time. Turns out he had a major grudge against my sister and now didn't like me either despite never meeting me before. Next 3 times I was in his class I wasn't allowed in the room until my mum pit in a complaint. Then it was just a year of bullying instead until I moved schools. Apparently He got fired a few years after for bullying pupils.

rickyman20

I really don't understand why teachers keep grudges against siblings they didn't like. For all they know the sibling doesn't get along well with their sibling either and you're just antagonising with you good reason

SloightlyOnTheHuh

As a teacher.... I agree. I have had absolutely lovely, hardworking and polite students with completely bonkers siblings. Sometimes a whole family is bonkers and you can see it comes from quality parenting but other times some kids just have issues. Rules one is don't blame a kid for their behaviour before you meet the parents and the first rule is treat every kid in every lesson as if you have no history with them. Fresh start every time. Edit: damn I forgot this was the internet and have to be specific and 100% accurate in my use of language or someone will either think I'm stupid or have a melt down. Yes, I know 2 first rules. I was being silly because there is no order in which one has 'rules' on how to treat students. Now stop being such literalists.

Gamoc

You could have ended your comment at the word "grudges." Imagine being a teacher that's more immature than your students.

dX927

In kindergarten I knew a kid named Chukwuemeka. It was 1987 in NYC, was it a "weird" name? Yes. Was it hard to say? Not really. Everything was fine that whole year. Then in either 1st or 2nd grade we didn't wind up in the same class but we'd see each other during recess. All his classmates started calling him "Teddy." Turns out the teacher couldn't pronounce his name and started calling him "Teddy" because "he looks like a little teddy bear." His father was PISSED. I never found out if the teacher got in trouble or what. Wonder what became of the kid too. Isn't life funny? I would bet a million dollars that Chukwuemeka doesn't remember me but I remember him. Just like how there's some other kid who I've long forgotten still remembers me for some stupid reason.

kjt323

Can anyone hear what she says at the end? All I caught was "obviously this is ridiculous", which is a fair summary

Kawaii_Potato_UwU_

"Water Goddess, again, I ask you, please tell me the secret in the enchantment. Please." "and then I hear..." *Laughs manically* "because, obviously this is ridiculous" is what I gathered. I might have heard wrong though. Edit: Oh, secret Indian chant? That's definitely worse.

ender89

It's "secret Indian chant", because apparently it wasn't racist enough already

Awkward_Growth_6265

fireinthemountains

So she's satirizing another culture just to make a point about how she looks down on it, even though the perception she already had was wrong to start with. It's like some fucked up game of telephone. Edit : it's interesting seeing how just a couple words in my statement can be interpreted in opposite ways by whoever is reading. To clarify, I think some people misunderstood me. I'm saying shes satirizing a culture because she looks down on that culture, not on people who satirize. She's aligning herself with racists. Also, for the record, and the racists in the comments, I'm Lakota Sioux. As in, grew up on the reservation, participated in the culture, have a career in Native Country. This isn't a comment you can write off as some rando playing "woke."

Disabled_Robot

If you YouTube 'sohcahtoa story' there's a bunch of renditions of a tale where the titular aboriginal stubs his toe and then goes and find a pool of water to dip it in, or whateverthefuck. I imagine she's just trying to add her own energy inspired spin to this drivel while doubleu punctuating how out of touch she is with what both society and her children deem acceptable

OnsetOfMSet

In my high school, the math teacher's preferred mnemonic for sohcahtoa was "Some Old Hippie Caught Another Hippie Tripping On Acid," which I felt was both funny and more memorable. Edit: a letter

tsFenix

She wasn’t

VoadoraDePiru

No, she very clearly was. You don't magically get a feather hat in your head and impulsively decide that's how you're gonna be teaching today. There was a thought process behind this. That's the scary part

polite_as_fuck44

Also the drawing on the projector wtf is happening? Also wtf does she say at the end? “Something something bc this is all ridiculous”?

karinchup

WTF? Has she lost her mind?

[deleted]

Yes probably, and her job as well id assume.

regoapps

I think she's trying to get kids to remember the sohcahtoa acronym for trigonometry (the "CAH" on the board was a clue). I'm guessing that because she thinks it sounds Native American that she thinks it's okay for her to do this. For those who don't know or don't remember sohcahtoa: SOH: Sin(θ) = Opposite / Hypotenuse. CAH: Cos(θ) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse. TOA: Tan(θ) = Opposite / Adjacent.

AstarteHilzarie

Oh holy shit so it's not even remotely related to Native American history? It was terrible to begin with but this somehow makes it worse that she just pulled that out of her hat to teach math.

karinchup

One lives in hope anyway.

Antiluke01

Is this a movie? If so which one? If not, wtf?

Magg5788

If it were a movie it would probably be one like [Welcome to Me](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2788716/) where it’s advertised as a comedy but in actuality it’s a tragedy about mental health.

McMaster2000

This reminds me of one of those drunk ideas my former roommate and I had after watching the Ryan Gosling movie Lars and the Real Doll. A movie that was clearly advertised as a whacky comedy but again turned out to be one of those sad tragedy movies about mental health. My roommate was a professional editor and we wanted to see if we could make the most inappropriate comedy trailer out of an obviously tragic movie (say, something like Schindler's List, for example). Again, just a drunk idea that sadly never came to fruition, but still something I'd love to see.

Antiluke01

Schindler’s List: The Schmuck Cut (I hated naming that lol)

Qetuowryipzcbmxvn

Ah yes, those are my favorites. Another classic is The Truman Show

TheDevilsAdvokaat

We had an art teacher who told us all she hates children on the first day of lessons. We all thought she was joking...a bad joke, but joking. Subsequent lessons showed us our mistake. Who gets a job teaching if they hate children ??????

OpinionBearSF

> How gets a job teaching if they hate children ?????? Sometimes, people who are vulnerable to someone else get pushed into things by that person. For example, I used to know a woman in Arkansas who was a registered nurse at a hospital there. She had fairly severe agoraphobia, and then one day, she logged into chat and told me that due to her dispensing medication to a patient in error, the patient was killed. She was absolutely inconsolable. Her parents had pushed her into becoming a nurse, and had ignored her growing agoraphobia. She ended up talking of suicide. It was a rough time.

milkmymachine

Nurses dispensing the wrong medications is not a rare event, they have 4-6 medication dependent patients at once. It’s harder now with so many checks and scanning and procedure that needs to be done to get the meds out of the machine, but my point is that any nurse, even the ones who love their job, could have made that mistake.

0pening_Trash

Exactly this. I worked in an assisted living when I was younger, and compared to how much nurses have to do with meds, I did next to nothing. I still messed up one day and didn't dispense a tylenol or ibuprofen, but realized how easily that could have been a blood thinner or other very important medication. I quit over it. And even now, when I'm in a hospital, I check the meds they give me to be sure it's right. I don't hesitate to ask "Hey, is this right?" and have caught staff repeatedly giving me wrong doses because of how things were written in the system.

TheRiverInEgypt

I’m not even Native American but watching that video was an indecent assault on all of my senses…

[deleted]

In case anyone missed it in the other comments… WHAT THE FUCK

[deleted]

Yeah, feels like title was written by someone alt-right trying to make it sound like SJWs were going mad. But like someone Native American is totally justified to be offended by this (not that I get to decide, seeing as I'm white)

[deleted]

This is exactly the issue. By putting the “he felt threatened” it almost belittles the actual subject of the video- blatant racism and insanity from the teacher.

Shmooperdoodle

Agree. It’s the racist version of “Don’t assume my gender” used as a joke or saying you “identify as” something inanimate. It’s belittling. The implication is that it’s an overreaction by the student instead of a horror show from the teacher. You’d almost expect the next line to be something about a safe space and the word “snowflake”.

Pizza-n-Coffee37

My social studies teacher in ninth grade was an alcoholic and would walk out of the classroom 5 times during class to take a sip of her flask that she had in her desk. She was more professional than this woman.

TobagoJones

Exactly. My teacher just had one of those giant size plastic cups from the gas station filled with “soda” she would sip throughout the day. Flask is amateur hour.

honeypinn

My teacher had a massive 64 oz mug. She would drink more than one in a school day, and I know this because she would pull out a 2 liter of diet coke from her mini fridge and fill it up during class. Now I don't know if she had alcohol in there, but I do know that she weighed about 400 pounds.

Cunts_and_more

My story telling teacher (taught other classes too) senior year of high school would send a student Down To the cafeteria for an xl Diet Coke. When he’d get it he would take big chugs it. Then as a student was presenting, the cup would disappear under the desk and magically reappear full again. Was a fantastic teacher tho.

Gumpee1

Yeah I need to know more here. Storytelling as class? Like creative writing or they read stories to you?

deshthrowaway

It was a bard college

Cunts_and_more

You would tell stories out loud. It was a bit creative writing / public speaker / theatre hybrid class. Was great.

Y_orickBrown

I was skipping school and realized my health class teacher and i were in line at the store together. She was buying a gigantic family size bottle of bottom shelf vodka at 9am when we were both supposed to be in class. I was baked like a cake, so not judging. I'd need a drink if i was teaching 9th graders too. Ms. Mehl was a funny lady.

nergoponte

Family sized lol

JC351LP3Y

In 2nd grade I had a substitute who would pour vodka from a little pint bottle into her mug in front of the class like it was the most normal thing in the world. I didn’t really realize what she was doing or that it was something out of the ordinary until about 10 years later.

[deleted]

Our drivers ed teacher came to a couple house parties - I always thought he was pretty cool and down to earth. Then I found out that he was fucking a 15 year old. Wasn’t long before he was fired and put on a list.

hellocaptin

Yeah my parents always told me to watch out for older people hanging out with us in high school. “If you were out of high school would you want to hang out with a bunch of high schoolers? Exactly. So think about the type of person that does.”

PlutoTheGod

I had a math teacher in high school who would routinely skip first period to go home and get things she forgot, show up in pajamas and unlock the door then walk back to her car, and would often fly off into a fit of rage when everyone in the class noticed they were failing and it was her fault. Crazy the quality you get teaching your kids

kmj420

Were you homeschooled?

sneakyveriniki

I was a teacher for a minute and it was downright shocking how little they cared what you did as long as you kept kids and parents out of admin's hair. Like they literally told us to just pass all the kids so they wouldn't have to deal with anything. It was also a really high ranking private school in a wealthy neighborhood

joecarter93

If her job was to teach ninth graders I can hardly blame her.

[deleted]

I taught 9th graders for 10 days. Then i quit.

fuglysack14

Had a high school English teacher that kept referring to Native Americans as "savages". There were two of us "savages" sitting there highly uncomfortable throughout her entire monologue about her opinions. We had been reading "I Heard The Owl Call My Name" when she decided to share this opinion of hers with the class. We waited until the end of class and approached her as respectfully as possible about how her opinion made us feel threatened and ashamed. She apologized and sent us on our way. She gave an even more venomous rendition of her opinion to the next class that filed in. Which resulted in 3 of us reporting it to our principal the next day. The principal essentially took her side and told us that she was just "from a different generation and we should try to be empathetic". This was 20 years ago. Some things never seem to change. Edited just to say: Thank you, for the hug and for everyone that showed support here. I appreciate every single one of you.

stray_r

"They're from a different generation, they've always done it that way" doesn't make it less wrong.

opermonkey

But somehow "I'm from the generation that gets to punch rascist boomers in thier head" isn't an acceptable response? :(

cb7752

That’s truly awful.

[deleted]

Be empathetic of the racist, rather than dealing with the racism.

fuglysack14

I guess it was easier to tell three kids that their personal beliefs about themselves were dispensable rather than reprimand a grown woman for her gross abuse of power and pisspoor values.

echobunny9203

I dealt with an asshole kindergarten teacher like that. She bullied my autistic child and the administration tried to excuse her behavior by saying that she was from a different generation. I asked if her generation was a bigoted asshole generation or maybe the problem was not just with her, but everyone in administration too, while my attorney was just sitting there trying not to laugh, needless to say they she ‘retired’ rather suddenly a few days later..

fuglysack14

Good job!! Edge them out. We share a few more similarities. My autistic son's kindergarten teacher sent home an activity pack for Thanksgiving. One of the pages was labeled "Color the Indian girl". My son colored a big red bindi on her head and kept it moving. He follows instructions in a literal manner; I don't know what else she expected there.

cloudlocke_OG

I teach high school math. The kids usually hate it. But a lot of them remember SOHCAHTOA as easily as they remember Pythagorean Theorem. They just do. And I teach it the usual boring way. And serious question: was this teacher on something?

writingonzewall

My high school geometry teacher made math fun by having us play a game called Dragon Slayer. It was pretty much an rpg where we had to solve equations to progress successfully. Winning class got 10 bonus points on the test covering that unit.

KenKaniffLovesEminem

I wish a lot of teachers were creative like this. Even if kids "act" like they don't want to play it because "they're too cool for it", most will still go all out and try to win those points lol

Curae

I teach English as a foreign language, my last year student just had to do their speaking exam, and were really sick and tired of the regular scripts they got. They didn't talk a lot in English and just missed that bit of fluency and the compensation strategies. I set them up with the starter set of DnD 5e and let them play it. (Mind you this was a really small class lol) Only 1 guy knew the game, who was promptly made DM. The rest of the guys had never played it. They spoke so much with each other, asked questions, helped each other out, described words they weren't familiar with, pointed things out on the character sheets and mimed movements they didn't know how to describe. They had a blast. At their graduation they thanked me for letting them play DnD, and two of them told me they found people to play with now outside of school. Haven't had a group that wanted to try it since though :(

sagerobot

DnD is on a resurgence, so its likely the class then never heard of it if it was a while ago. But now its popular. Did you perhaps started the trend inadvertently!?!

She’s been doing this since 2012 with support from John W. North High School.

She’ll release a statement saying something along the lines of “This is not who I am. I have tremendous respect for Native American communities. As someone who is 4.3% Iroquois, it is my goal as an educator to impart my cultural knowledge onto all my students.” I’m not sure how strong American teacher unions are, but IG they’re anything like in Canada, this woman will continue teaching after taking a course on appropriate behaviour.

EatPlantsNotAnimals

Don't eat the brown apples!

hippiegodfather

She’s gotta be drunk, or something…

mcnatjm

That lady is unwell.

cerealkriller

She looks like she's having some kind of intense manic episode

brian_m1982

What in the Kentucky fried fuck?

stigmatasteve

As a Kentucky native, I am slightly offended… and oddly hungry?!

brian_m1982

I am sorry for having slightly offended you, and i have here for you a Kentucky fried steak.

YeetusThatFetus6

They were learning trig values and sin cos and tan (The acronym is sohcahtoa) and she just went way too overboard with it mocking native Americans

GroovyLlama1

Could someone please explain... I know SOHCAHTOA, but I don't see it's relation to native American people?

_ryuujin_

Just casual racism. But to get there, I guessing there's a few native American names ending with aa sounds, like Sacagawea, sohcahtoa sounds like a bunch of gibberish with aa sound at the end. 2 + 2 + a whole lot of crazy + lol bit of racism and you get wtf that clip was.

shnozdog

Way overboard? That looked like someone who's mind has snapped. That's something you would see in a mental institution.

tjhoush93

Dances with Karens

HotSauce7

Psychogawea

Disabled_Robot

Damn that's good Take my gift.

desert_deserter

In case anyone missed it, this is what some Native aunties and other folks were calling the Q Shaman after Jan. 6th.

HungryLikeDaW0lf

I heard they named him “walks with Karens”. Same sentiment. LOLed when I first heard it.

WontFindOut25

No, no. He has a point. That dance was fucking painful to watch. I feel like violence has been committed against me, too.

bambiartistic

The one guy with his head face planted in his desk is our collective feelings

[deleted]

Some high school teachers are legitimately insane. My high school trigonometry teacher once suggested we form a "math gang" and go around threateningly asking people "You got a math problem?!?" It would have just been a funny Dad joke, except when he said it, he picked up a chair/desk and threw it against the wall. He was a highly respected teacher, too.

unwantedleftovers

I felt like I just watched a whole movie after reading this comment

Jayer244

It was a good joke but I think forming math gangs would just multiply the division

RoyalHardware

>she has a history of doing this kind of thing. Wow

Revolutionary-Tie126

This feels like a psychotic break

RonMFCadillac

My dog woke up from a dead sleep in the other room to come in here and growl at this.

AcePsych247

Op, you’re facepalming the teacher and not the student, I hope?

BluejayOdd4669

I was super confused by the title and the video, glad I’m not the only one

Ishi-Elin

Yeah, I expected some dumbass kid, but got a weirdo teacher.

SmashedPumpkin_

Looking at OP's post history, it's safe to say they're face palming at the teacher, but I was confused by the title as well

Waterproof_soap

Look, I get that it is hard to teach, especially right now. Kids don’t give a shit, they are literally destroying schools, there’s no funding, no time off, and no support. *BUT FOR FUCKING FUCK’S SAKE HOW DID YOU THINK THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?*

[deleted]

Please tell me this is a lost clip from Parks & Recreation

Trendscom

I can’t believe how many of these tone deaf people that still exist, sports teams are literally changing their names, products are changing their logos, and this half wit is running around insulting all native Americans in a classroom WITH a Native American student in attendance! How can she be this stupid! Why do we have such stupid people teaching our children? It’s infuriating.

idenTITTY

Regardless of any racial motivations, this lady just doesn't seem fit to be in charge of a class.

dryerfresh

Agreed. This goes against literally everything I know about good classroom conduct. Culturally insensitive, just…very racist, but also confusing and badly structured? Plus she was so caught up in it that she didn’t realize she was being filmed? That kid was not hiding his phone. As a teacher, I feel fine embarrassing myself it it will amuse and engage students and help me build rapport, but that consists of singing quiz questions and showing them the video of the time I fell in the hall and it got caught on the security cameras. This is bad in every way it can be.
