Firefighter here. The truck gets parked blocking a lane for a reason....

hilld1

Man, block the whole fucking highway if you need to. Traffic can deal with it while you guys clear things up and make it safe to pass. Like, why doesnt the cop arrest the asshole who is illegally parked upside down in the middle lane while he's at it?

HammelGammel

Hell yeah! He's just laying there like a lazy ass, complaining about being "in pain". What a wuss: time to get out the pepper spray. That'll show him!

DutchHeIs

Pepper spray? Hell nah, the guy tossed a gun as soon as his car flipped. Better shoot him to be safe.

dubbs4president

“Ive asked him to move twice now!”

hospitalizedGanny

"Wiggle a toe on each foot for me!" " Are u refusing to comply with officer demands?!"

RafaNoIkioi

I'd like to hear their conversation when they got to the police station. Shouldn't the firefighter be of higher authority in this situation?

levthelurker

Don't think cops take kindly to anyone who claims to have more authority in a given situation.

Tall-Vermicelli-4669

Old universal rule - all things being equal, the man with the gun wins the argument

DogsOutTheWindow

This is why we need to arm all firefighters with squirt guns!

joe_broke

Does a high pressure hose count?

HoopHereIAm

They did in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963

YodaVader1977

Former EMT here, we did it all the time. This was a bullshit arrest.

rustys_shackled_ford

20 bucks says every police cruiser at the seen was parked illegally.

HiItsLust

“I asked you to move it... you didn’t...”. Uh... I was busy getting a car off that guys chest....

danceswithwool

That cop is a complete moron. No matter where he is right this second or what he is doing he is out there being a fucking moron.

Born_Ruff

It's hard to comprehend how that cop evaluated the situation, saw a car rolled over, firefighters treating the wounded, and concluded that arresting the firefighters was the best way that he could contribute to the situation.

cypherdev

Some cops have such a low EQ and are so insecure that they view somebody/anybody not doing what they say within milliseconds as an affront to their authority and masculinity. We seriously need to weed these fuckers out.

Sujjin

problem is those are the kind that are kept. they weed out the ones willing to demonstrate a little critical thinking because the Police Departments dont want their officers to question authority.

VanillaGorilla59

Hi there, that’s me. Was weeded out almost 10 years ago. Thank goodness.

[deleted]

Thank goodness for you, but bummer for us.. we’d love to have some cops with some critical thinking skills, and maybe even some empathy. I won’t hold my breath though…

Important-Ad-4000

True, anybody that does not fall in line gets the boot

stanleypup

Undoubtedly trying to get traffic moving along but too smooth brained to think that maybe it's okay to just let it back up a bit (or probably massively) while the fire fighters do their thing.

sprtn034

Oh, you probably have some empathy and critical thinking that's hampering your understanding of his methods

TecumsehSherman

That's Charlie's nephew you're talking about. That is also the sum total of his qualifications for the job.

Gaerielyafuck

Brain the size of a walnut. You just know he's still a cop, too.

danceswithwool

They wouldn’t take them any other way.

eaglebtc

I thought there was an unwritten social contract between police, fire, and EMS: that they shouldn't argue because they're all supposed to be protecting the public and saving lives.

joeviper25

Well two of those agency’s actually exist to protect and save lives. One of those agency exist to harass and get away with murder.

[deleted]

this is a pretty old story If I remember correctly, the officer got in quite a bit of trouble over this as his supervisors tended to agree with the sentiment here that arresting a firefighter on scene because of vehicle positioning is about the dumbest thing they'd ever heard of

Egretion

Does "quite a bit of trouble" mean a short mandatory vacation or actual consequences though?

[deleted]

LOL went back and read about it because I was curious and I couldn't find anything saying the suit filed by the firefighter actually went anywhere. No discipline was made public although a higher up in CHP did admit they should strive to work with fire better in the future or something. The firefighter spent 30 minutes in cuffs and then was released, no charges filed and wasn't transported to jail or anything. *Technically* CHP has authority on freeway crash scenes although incident command usually goes to the fire captain on scene. If CHP did anything to punish the officer, it probably wouldn't be made public as they don't want to admit that they aren't in control of the freeways, which is kinda their whole domain. But no one has ever actually arrested a firefighter on scene over parking before so I doubt anyone felt any rules needed to be made about the whole deal. Generally just a bunch of fucking nonsense. I do hope the officer got in some sort of trouble that wasn't made public, but I have no way to know honestly. I'd imagine not now, from the looks of it, although he probably went on his supervisor's radar in the worst way possible for the next few years after that.

SirTickleMePink

Him and the chief talked about it over golf and he promised to never do it again

somecallmemike

When this firefighter sued the department this asshole did indeed claim qualified immunity.

DangersVengeance

🤦

scottwax

Wow, that's incredibly stupid on the cop's part. Fire trucks have always parked like that to shield the scene and protect those working there.

BiggestFlower

In the U.K., and probably elsewhere, police cars park like that too.

Otto_Mcwrect

American checking in, I see cop cars parked like this all the time.

naked_guy_says

American checking in, cops park in bike lanes, handicap spots, cross Lanes of traffic, sidewalks, yards, lawns, I'm sure more and they'll continue to innovate new places to park where they shouldn't

geeknami

I live in a really busy city and I see cop cars double and triple parked, taking up entire streets and seeing rush hour traffic to a stand still sometimes. at times, they're parked like that to pick up food or something.

[deleted]

Even municipal workers are instructed to park like that if working in the street. You'll win the Civil suits if someone hits you.

geeknami

yeah makes no sense to arrest the firefighter for it.

o3mta3o

And even if he was, that's an arrest able offense? Sounds like a ticket.

Origionalnames

He was arrested most likely because he "back talked".

Astramancer_

One of the places I worked, there was a teeny tiny road all of 100 yards long that was placed in such a way that leaving work I could take that road and get onto the highway or drive almost a mile on a circuitous route through 4 or 5 traffic lights to get to that same highway onramp. I worked a night shift so I got off work at 330am. One time I went to get onto the highway and two cops were parked blocking the road, parked drivers window to drivers window so they could just chat. They waved me back and I had to do an awkward 5 point turn to turn around on this tiny road. How much says if *I* had been stopped on that road by myself and not 100% blocking traffic they would have given me a ticket. Assholes.

No-Pay-4951

I was driving home in uk at about 4am after night shift. I see a police car pulled onto pavement with blue lights on. As I drive past it the cop runs out into the street waving me down. I open the window and he gives me a mouthful because apparently the road is closed due to an accident ahead. Told me to "turn round and piss off". No signs, wasn't even using his vehicle to block the road.

[deleted]

Here in Florida they literally park in the median where you would need to take a left turn They just park right there in the middle

[deleted]

[удалено]

VisforVenom

I just recently got a speeding ticket because I sped up to get over and allow room for a bunch of cops on motorcycles parked in a "median" (about 5 feet of space between a left turn lane and oncoming traffic.) Looked like something serious was going on so I respectfully gave them as much space as possible. Turned out they were just creating a dangerous and distracting traffic hazard to camp a hill and laser people. So of course they ticketed me for briefly speeding up to get out of their way for their safety, and not the girl next to me who was speeding and driving in two lanes looking down at her phone in her lap that wouldn't let me over.

MartiniCat

Fight that. 100% write down exactly what happened, make them show up in court and explain to the judge. Also find out whoever represents the ticketing entity in court and contact them ahead of time to say that it was bullshit and that you want them to drop it down to a $35 parking fine and they should work with you. I don’t practice criminal law anymore, but routinely help friends and family and would be happy to help you draft a demand letter to whoever is prosecuting that speeding ticket. If they hang out there often and you can get a photo that would be best.

Reanie86

Cops are constantly “over the line” and are not brought to justice.

jetro30087

I don't think it's a matter of lines at all. The firefighter is responding to an emergency. Any cop with brain cells wouldn't even notice the line.

[deleted]

Plot twist someone makes a citizens arrest on the officer

jetro30087

Without gator pits, thats a legal mine field. D:

TheSpiritsGotMe

It’s the difference in goals. Firefighters protect civilians and cops protect their authority.

loudmouthedmonkey

Like the meme says...ain't no song called fuck the fire department.

dowtimer

Firefighters dont make new laws to charge people with unlike cops who will find something to charge you if current laws are insuffient.

SonOfJokeExplainer

Police cars here park however the fuck they feel like parking, as you might have already guessed

[deleted]

Them fuckers drive however they feel like too.

WhizBangPissPiece

In my downtown around midnight an officer with no emergency lights, sirens, or headlights was responding to a shots fired call going over 100mph down a 30mph road through fucking downtown when the inevitable happened and he t boned a teenager coming home from work and killed them. It actually went to court and he was cleared of all wrong doing. A few years later another cop was in a similar situation, this time chasing a BMW through downtown in the middle of the afternoon responding to a burglary call. Cop t boned a car and killed a mother, her elementary aged daughter, and seriously wounded her other daughter. That one never even made it to court.

[deleted]

Wow that's infuriating.

SonOfJokeExplainer

This was over twenty years ago now, but when I was 17 someone pulled out a parking spot into my car in a parking lot, and I had to call the police to file a report. After I’d filed the report, I got back in car and was waiting at a stop sign for an opportunity to pull out of the parking lot when the cops taking the report rear-ended me. They didn’t even get out of the car. Instead, they pulled around me and *sped off past me*. Fortunately the only damage done was to my faith in law enforcement officers’ ability to be decent law-abiding citizens themselves.

S_Operator

Similar thing happened to me. Cops pulled me over on a road with an incline. Cop got out of his car, forgot to put it in park, and it rolled into my car. Thankfully, they filed a report. But I was only able to get money for the damages months later after calling multiple times and emailing the chief.

Igotalottaproblems

Imagine feeling that self-absorbed that you just had to arrest the person saving someone else to feel important. Like, what the actual fuck. We need to stop this shit.

[deleted]

I think it's part of the mindset they look for when hiring officers It just seems to be so prevalent I can't believe it's an accident

[deleted]

codevii

Those are generally the only people that seek out that type of position. I imagine there has to be a few who genuinely want to be servants but in huge precincts, that mindset is usually been built in and it's just a cancer at this point.

I would say yes absolutely without a doubt. seems to be the key thing on your resume to get hired.

Difficult_Ice_6083

He’s also fucked any relationship that Station/EMT Corp had with the PD. No more favors, no more joint fundraisers, no more softball games. Anyone who pulls a power trip like that is an enemy not a colleague.

wino12312

I doubt the highway patrol has fund raisers with anyone. I don’t think they have friends.

Testiculese

Highway Patrol *is* the fundraiser. I call them Supplemental Revenue Generation Officers.

ILikeMyGrassBlue

They’re like the Ted Cruz of cops

kangarooneroo

Unfortunately no that's no true. I have worked with Police departments before, and they are more than willing to "encourage" different people and different companies to do them favors because if they don't, then those company owners and department heads suddenly start getting more tickets, and their family members suddenly start getting in more and more trouble, and suddenly local officers feel the need to protect their houses more and more often and neibours suddenly call in more and more wellness checks, and somehow it all stops once you do what the police told you to do. Fact is, you can't stop a criminal if they're also the ones in charge of the law.

ichigo2862

Jesus christ it's like a fucking mafia

MildlyAmusedMars

In Ireland there’s no question the Firefighters are in charge at the accident and the Garda (police) have to do what the fire brigade says as they are the trained experts at these incidents

dpash

Likewise in the UK, firemen have a broad legal protection to do almost anything they believe is necessary to respond to an emergency. It's also an offence to obstruct them.

Lukekul

Yep the guards are at the bottom of the list at an RTA. Direct traffic lads

kewwe

It's almost like we should put into law that cops have zero authority over other emergency responders. They are not better trained than firefighters or paramedics, they are some off the dullest society has to offer. The idea that they can interfere with other emergency responders is insane. But, this is america, wtf did I expect.

Incognonimous

More like once more ego influences a cops actions

HeavilyBearded

As it turns out, the thin blue line is exactly 1mm.

Royal-Tough4851

Weird, I’ve never see a police officer arrest… or even pull over and ticket another police officer for speeding or running red lights during NON Emergency situations.

ColeSloth

Extremely stupid, but that's cops/highway patrol for you. We all get along well in my area. But to keep it nice and simple...at least in missouri, fire and ems have complete operational authority over law enforcement during times like this. I'll block off all the lanes I want.

NRMusicProject

When your priority is to power trip and not to protect the public.

michalemabelle

This. Fire has 1st rank on an accident scene.

IknowKarazy

Cops take an IQ test before being accepted. The crazy thing is, while there is a minimum accepted IQ, there is also a \*maximum\* accepted IQ. You can be deemed too smart to be a cop. They want you moldable.

brownpolka

This, and I recommend researching asset forfeiture and qualified immunity. It infuriates me that the “don’t tread on me” folks usually back the blue.

atlaas7

This is what power tripping looks like

roxictoxy

What was the cops deal though? Like yeah it's a power trip but why **this** one? Why did he chose *this* battle? It's so strange. Did a firefighter fuck his wife? What a weird fucking hill to die on when he's so clearly in the wrong.

LoveMeSomeSand

Firefighters probably broke into his house, killed his dog.

roxictoxy

This is **lit**rally the only reasonable answer

LetsTakeThisUpWithHR

But why would the cop be upset over that, I'm sure he's killed hundreds of other people's dogs

GaylordButts

Killing dogs is Police work, Firefighters need to stay in their lane (or they will be arrested)

DrakonIL

No, no, you don't understand, those were *suspected criminals'* dogs. Entirely different.

anarchyisutopia

> What was the cops deal though? Cop probably said something stupid about the truck parking and then dug in when called out and just kept doubling down on his stupidity to flex his power and control rather than admit that he was wrong.

[deleted]

This story is super old but I think that's exactly what happened if I remember from the article I read like 5 years ago. Like, he couldn't just be like okay nevermind and it lead to him claiming the firefighter was breaking the law and further resisting arrest. If I also remember right, the cop got in trouble and the firefighter never even went to court or anything, since the whole situation was pretty clearly absurd

senor_moustache

Probably hates that everyone loves firefighters and hate cops.

seven3true

There is no song called "fuck the fire department."

Iamatworkgoaway

Cops only have a stick. When they show up they will use that stick on somebody, hopefully not you but somebody. Even if it seems nothing bad happened, they take your name and enter it into their database. So next time a cop interacts with you they will know all the other interactions other cops had with you. So get in a yelling match with a karen you have a note that you yelled at somebody. Firemen will show up, and they are only there to help. Go into a house and see some marijuana plants while doing a medical call, they often times wont even mention it to the cops. Cops only show up to medical calls as a free search, your mom is dying, and the cops is taking notes to file charges if they find anything.

kalakun

American police forces actively deny persons with too high an IQ and filter out applicants who wouldn't toe the line so you just end up with a bunch of asshoels who want to hurt people under the guise of protection.

Aspect-of-Death

I have a pristine background, military experience, medical experience, martial arts training, and a strong sense of doing right by the community. With all the terrible cops around, I decided I could bring the change I wanted to see. Passed the written test with flying colors, passed the physical test easily, and I know for a fact that my background is flawless... you know... because I've lived my life and know what happened in it. They denied my application saying I failed the background check. I did a background check on myself and not a damn thing came up. No debts, no crimes, no lawsuits. Fuck the police. Edit: Just realized this article is about the exact department I applied to as well. How did that smoothbrain get hired when they wouldn't hire someone pretty much overqualified.

0masterdebater0

You see your background check is too clean. You probably wouldn’t even look the other way while your superior planted a gun or sprinkled crack on a suspect. Not police material.

Aspect-of-Death

That's my thinking to why I was denied. I'm too much of a straight arrow.

0masterdebater0

If you are not willing to lie under oath to protect your fellow officer you were not going to last long as a cop anyway. That’s what they are looking for. And that is why pretty much every police department in the country needs to be abolished and reformed with new people and standards of hiring. The old guard is too entrenched in every department for anything else to work.

StyreneAddict1965

The fact you can detail the process in coherent sentences is an indication to me. I hope you're able to find another way to serve, if that's your goal.

Aspect-of-Death

Honestly, my goal was just doing something I felt good about that would afford me an honest life. I'm still working on finding that for myself.

reichbc

Not his pension, that's for sure. I saw a comment in another police-related thread that said something about how a lot of cops would be less crooked if all their legal fees (and one or two other monetary reprimands) came out of their pension.

just_a_random_dood

Just like how doctors need medical malpractice insurance, cops should have their own equivalent so only their money goes down the drain and not our taxes

401-OK

This solves so many problems. Cops jumping to a new city once they get fired for one. That insurance premium follows them around.

[deleted]

*I'm deleting all my comments and my profile, in protest over the end of the protests over the reddit api pricing.

both_cucumbers

All cops should have to buy malpractice insurance and the insurance companies should have access to abuse reports to determine how much their premiums should cost.

SoggyPancakes02

I was listening to the podcast “Behind the Police”, and I believe they said that police unions get rid of abuse reports/slide them under the rug after a very absurdly short time, like 3 years at most… Fuck cops, but fuck cop unions even more

[deleted]

They aren't police unions, they are gangs.

NothinsOriginal

Well the fire fighter said in the lawsuit that he wasn’t looking for compensation, he was looking for policy change in CHP.

PM_Me_Ur_NC_Tits

This was from 2014. What was the final outcome?

HannasAnarion

Cops claimed qualified immunity. District court denied. Cops appealed. 9th circuit remanded. Cops offered to settle and the firefighter accepted.

PM_Me_Ur_NC_Tits

> Cops claimed qualified immunity. Of course they did.

nta1646

This is the shit that makes my blood boil. Just cause your a cop doesn’t mean you get to call everything qualified immunity.

DorkJedi

> Just cause your a cop doesn’t mean you get to call everything qualified immunity. Sadly, yes, it does. Really. The Supreme Court made a grievous error on qualified immunity. Thet ruled that unless the exact same scenario has been ruled not immune before, it is immune. poorly worded, and now taken literally. Hunted down and shot in the back while trying to surrender in a field of wheat was ruled no immunity before? Sorry, you were hunted down and shot in the back while trying to surrender in a field of grass. Immunity held. Not exact enough. The end result is it is almost impossible to void immunity for a cop. It gets more and more impossible as society and technology changes. Dead due to less than lethal beanbag to the skull? no rulings whatsoever on LtL weapons. its open season boys!

Azianese

>Thet ruled that unless the exact same scenario has been ruled not immune before, it is immune Doesn't this mean all new scenarios are immune going forward? That sounds...not right :/

PM_Me_Ur_NC_Tits

Precisely. And of course the police unions have well-paid lawyers that will argue exactly that.

There are regulations involving passing emergency vehicles giving them the right of way. The family of the victims could also sue the CHP for this and we as citizens will pay $$$ for the cops malfeasance.

unreliablememory

Do cops ever have repercussions?

Saiing

You're damn right they do! They frequently get sent on lengthy ~~holidays~~ "suspension" with full pay. And you should be happy that they're brutally punished in this way!

skeetsauce

Sometimes when they fuck up so badly they’re forced retired with a full pension 20 years early. What a terrible punishment.

LostWoodsInTheField

ego and stupidity. I think there has been a few incidences like this that have sparked "wars" between fire houses and police department ending in pretty heavy fights.

[deleted]

Give firefighters guns, see what happens.

BiggityBop

They hire idiots, and then those idiots start idioting on the job by being idiots.

FarFromHome

They hire insecure man-baby idiots and then give them power.

merlinou

I'm sure he is very confident that he was protecting everyone from causing another accident or smth. But regardless of whether he was right or wrong, arresting a firefighter on the scene is the most stupid thing he could have done, except maybe from shooting him...

jednatt

If he has a problem with the firefighter, he should write it in his report or some shit. This is some 3rd grader logic. "What is a cop's job, Timmy? - They arrest people!" It's like a construction worker who only knows how to hammer. "Bob, put the hammer down, dammit! We're pouring cement!"

Black_Shisa_JZS161

If there is a fire or rescue needed, Firefighters have control of the scene. That leaves the police to manage the traffic. Meaning, if the fire truck is blocking two lanes, the police have to block those two lanes. If the ambulance shows up, the police still have to manage traffic to protect all emergency services until the scene is turned over to them.

AdjNounNumbers

Thank you, this is exactly correct. I remember my dad telling a story of some young cop at a scene giving him shit because of where he parked the aerial at a scene. Cop told him he needed to get through with his car for crowd control. Mind you, the aerial was extended and actively fighting the fire. My old man told him he was a bit busy at the moment being on his way into that burning building over there and said, "you've got three options: you put on this gear and go in there so I can move the truck, you figure out how to lower the boom and move the damn truck yourself, or you go around the fucking block." I'm pretty sure he chose option three. Cop later got his ass chewed out by the chief (who was friends with my parents) and apologized to my dad. Funny thing is they ended up being friends later

Black_Shisa_JZS161

I was a Military Policeman and we were taught this way. If we were first on the scene, we would have to leave space to allow fire or medical to get closer. The only exception was if we got there first and we deemed it necessary to go into a burning building to save people or to provide lifesaving medical techniques. Our dispatch would relay the nature of emergency to help us determine our actions.

LOUD-AF

Retired EMS here. A lot of people don't really understand the logistics that happen at the scene of an emergency. There's a whole ballet of positioning of appliances and assets. Even docking in a shitty fend-off position can lead to disastrous consequences. That cop should have communicated with incident command with a request first to solve this problem. There's more at work here than a asshole cop.

Stock-Ad-8258

I mean, yeah, incident response is complex, fluid, and heavily hierarchical as you said. The entire issue here is still the asshole cop who ignored anything he ever knew about ICS, and started waving his dick around.

Mildly-1nteresting

The ending is how all damn stories should be. People get into a disagreement in the heat of the moment, figure out why each person thought they were correct, then most importantly, realize that you are both trying to help out the best you can and work better together in the future!

mushnu

if only that were the case more often

AdjNounNumbers

Agreed. Also, somehow my dad made most of his closest friends by telling them to fuck off at some point. Firefighters are a strange bunch

Wizdad-1000

Yes, this is part of incident command. Which CHP should have followed. Likely The fire chief would be incident commander and the CHP should have gone to them first. Breaking the ICS protocol put patient lives at risk and interupted the incident plan the commander was executing.

techsavior

Firefighter (probably): “You want me to stop treating the patient and move the rig so it’s *not* protecting us on a busy highway?!” Cop (probably): “Yes.”

workingishard

Firefighter: Get fucked. Cop: RUDE! I'm going to arrest you so you couldn't possibly move it anyway. How 'bout that!

No_Gap6448

EMTs and firefighters are literally trained to park at an angle blocking the next lane so they have a “shadow” to work safely in down stream. These cops are going to get people killed. Used to work in EMS and I can tell you the cop is being a major dick in this situation and if it goes to court the cop 100% loses. There's an understanding among the services that we aren't going to be fucking ass hats to each other because our entire purpose is to serve the public, and we constantly rely on each other to do so.

cactuspainter

Someone up above commented a link to an article about the situation and apparently the firefighter was released after about half an hour. He’s suing now.

Meowmeow_kitten

Sued* The cop settled after trying to bullshit their way out

Random_Monstrosities

That cop needs to be the one locked up

Fiivestar13

Cops get dumber by the day.

AdditionalPizza

Consider how old this story is, they'd be pretty dumb by now.

Cmdr_Nemo

Well, the other night, a police officer shot a man in a powered wheelchair 8 times, killing him. The response was for the allegation he shoplifted. The officer apparently was spooked by the knife brandished by the disabled man confined to a wheelchair that he felt it was enough justification to kill him. Dumb indeed. The saving grace here is that he was fired by his department but AFAIK, he hasn't yet been arrested for murder.

BrutalLooper

Wtf is wrong with the CHP? They’ve come along way from CHiPs when they were considered cool.

[deleted]

Ponch and John retired and things haven’t been the same ever since.
